Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High Carbon Steel Blade: Provides strength and flexibility for effective application and smoothing.
  • Hammerhead®: Allows for setting drywall nails and adds versatility to the tool.
  • Ideal Flex Point: Ensures accurate spreading of putty or joint compound.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Framing or demolition with the cap.
  • The Hammer Head sets fasteners and dimples holes; it is not a substitute for a hammer on framing, and pounding it invites damage.
  • Too wide for the concentrated centerline pressure tape needs — bed with a 4"–6" knife, then fill with this.
  • Scraping hard ridges.
  • A flexible blade skates; use a stiff chisel-edge tool.

How the pros run it

01

One hand, two ends

The working rhythm of a Hammer Head knife is blade-then-butt-then-blade. Learn to rotate the tool in the hand so capping a fastener costs no more than a beat. That flow is the feature; a Hammer Head you have to two-hand is just a heavier knife.
02

Bow still steers the compound

Center-handle pressure bows the blade to leave a sandable crown; corner pressure feathers an edge to zero. The steel cap adds handle-end weight but the pass is steered the same way as any 8" flexible blade.
03

Carbon wants drying

The blade is high-carbon — keener and more tunable than stainless, and it rusts. Wash and dry it at the end of the day; a rusted feathering edge is a ruined feathering edge (trade reference). If you want the Hammer Head and the fill width but never want to dry a blade, the stainless Pro or Full-metal families carry Hammer Heads too.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What does the Hammer Head actually do?
Its steel butt cap sets a popped drywall nail or screw below flush and dimples the hole, so you can coat over it — without switching to a hammer.
Can I use it as a hammer?
Only for setting fasteners and dimpling. Not for framing, not for demolition.
Is the blade different from the 02990?
No — same 8" carbon flexible blade. Only the butt differs.
Does the cap make it head-heavy for finishing?
Slightly; most finishers stop noticing in a day, and the one-tool workflow more than repays it.
Will it rust?
It's carbon — wash and dry after use.
