Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Bristle Material: Soft, flexible synthetic bristles (historically called white bristles).
  • Handle: Beavertail handle for improved grip and control.
  • Coating Compatibility: Ideal for use with oil-based paints and stains.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Water-based coatings — rated for oil, and, if the fill is true natural white bristle, harmed by latex (softens, flares).
  • For a 3-inch latex/acrylic job use the 47531 instead; this is the pivotal choice for the width and it is covered next.
  • It is not a cutting-in brush (square flat, not angular) and not a detail brush — for muntins, spindles, and narrow reveals, drop to the 47380 (1") or 47381 (2").
  • And it is not a wall brush for latex; a 3" latex wall/cut brush should be a flagged synthetic, not an oil-side white-bristle flat.

How the pros run it

01

Loading

a 3" carries a lot; dip to one-third to one-half, tap off, and work from the loaded side — an over-charged wide brush floods edges and runs at the ferrule. Spreading and laying off: flow on, spread with a light cross-stroke if the field is wide, then finish with a single light tip-off along the grain; the Extra's softness is wasted if you keep brushing a setting film. Grip: full grip on the beavertail, the palm swell doing real work over a wide surface's many strokes. Cleaning: flush the correct solvent (mineral spirits for oil enamel and stain; the finish maker's thinner for varnish/poly) fully into the heel, wash, comb straight, spin/shake, hang. A wide brush holds more finish deep in the heel, so it needs more flushing there, not less — cured finish at the ferrule ruins the brush.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Natural or synthetic bristle?
Hyde's catalog says "white bristles"; its website says "synthetic bristles (historically called white bristles)" — unresolved ; buy it for oil regardless.
3" Extra or 3" 47531 — which do I want?
Oil finish/stain on furniture and trim → 47382. Latex, or you're not sure what's in the can → 47531.
Can I paint a whole door with it?
Yes — this is the door-and-panel width of the line; that's its main job in oil.
Streaky varnish on a wide top?
Keep a wet edge, load enough to stay wet across the field, and finish with one light tip-off; a starved 3" laps because it dries before the next stroke joins.
