How to Work the McKay Stitching Bench — An Authorized Knife-Work Workflow
Scope boundary: this guide covers selection and controlled use of Hyde 53300 and 53360 hand knives around an industrial stitching workflow. It does not teach operation, setup, threading, guarding, adjustment, repair, or energy isolation of any particular stitching machine.

Job: complete the authorized knife-in-hand work associated with a McKay/Blake stitching station: prepare the bench, receive and stabilize work outside the machine danger zone, cut thread ends or trim and dress the channel/seam area only as the approved process requires, inspect the result, and hand it to the next operation.
Time: set by the approved routing and the work itself. Do not create a universal pieces-per-hour promise; material, construction, cut length, inspection level, and the number of machine/hand-work transfers all change the cycle.
Difficulty: industrial-skilled. The knife motions are short, but the consequences are not: one wandering cut can sever a sound stitch, scar a finished surface, weaken a seam allowance, or send a hand into the blade path. Work near a powered station also adds point-of-operation and unexpected-start hazards.
Both are complete riveted hand knives with high-carbon steel blades, nickel-plated ferrules, and hardwood handles.
Everything else the operation must supply: the approved machine-specific operating procedure; current job traveler or work instruction; approved sample, drawing, or defect standard; designated knife-work surface; positive workholding suited to the article; task lighting; blade sheath or protected storage position; sharpening and inspection standard; scrap container; first-aid and incident process; and the PPE selected by the employer’s task-specific hazard assessment.
Before the job: establish who owns each decision
This is a production cell, not one person improvising at a cobbler’s bench. Name the roles before material is released:
The supervisor or process owner releases the routing, approved sample, knife-work limits, inspection points, and machine-specific procedure. This person resolves ambiguous workmanship language and decides whether a trial piece is acceptable.
The trained machine operator runs the stitching equipment only within that machine’s authorization and guarding rules. This guide provides no machine-control sequence.
The knife user performs only the released hand-work, on a stable support and outside the operating machine’s danger zone. The knife user may also be the trained machine operator, but the two responsibilities do not blur.
The authorized employee for lockout/tagout performs hazardous-energy isolation when the task enters the facility’s servicing or maintenance boundary. “I pressed stop” is not lockout.
The inspector or receiving operation applies the acceptance standard and records the disposition. Where the operator is permitted to self-check, the traveler should still make the check and hand-off explicit.
Stop at the role boundary. A knife user who has not been trained and authorized on the machine does not operate it. An affected employee who is not authorized under the energy-control program does not apply an improvised lock or declare the machine isolated.
OSHA requires point-of-operation guarding where machine operation exposes an employee to injury and says the guarding must prevent body parts from entering the danger zone during the operating cycle (29 CFR 1910.212). A hand knife is not a substitute for a guard. If ordinary knife work cannot be done with the work fully clear of the operating danger zone and all required guards in place, the cell design or written process must be corrected before production continues.
Read the traveler as a cutting contract
Before selecting a knife, identify five things in the released job information:
What may be cut. Examples at the defensible station altitude are designated thread ends, a specified channel or seam margin, loose fibers, or material named by the work instruction. The knife’s historical name does not authorize a cut.
What must survive. Mark the protected stitch line, finished face, upper, lining, insole, outsole, reinforcement, hardware, or other no-cut feature named by the product specification. If the instruction does not distinguish waste from protected material, return it for clarification.
Where hand-work occurs. The safe default is a separate, stable knife-work area after the article is removed from the point of operation.
What “done” means. Obtain the approved sample, drawing, measurable limit, or defect images. “Dress the seam” is not an acceptance criterion until the shop defines the retained edge, permissible tool marks, thread condition, and next-operation need.
Who accepts it. Know whether first-piece approval, patrol inspection, operator verification, or 100-percent inspection applies, and where rejection is recorded.
When old routing language assumes that “the McKay knife” explains the work, pause. Translate the inherited shorthand into a current, observable operation before touching production.
Decide whether the task is production, a guarded intervention, or servicing
Use this gate every time the job moves between machine and hand work:
Normal production hand-work
Proceed under the machine operating procedure only when all of the following are true:
the machine is in the safe state required by that procedure;
the article has been transferred to the designated hand-work support, fully outside the point of operation and any ingoing nip, rotating part, moving clamp, needle path, or other guarded hazard;
no guard is removed, bypassed, reached around, or defeated;
the knife and both hands remain outside the machine danger zone; and
no jam, adjustment, cleaning, repair, or tool change is being performed on the machine.
Stop and route to lockout/tagout
Do not reach in with the knife when the article is trapped, wrapped, misfed, or inaccessible; when a guard must move; when any body part must enter a point of operation or associated danger zone; or when cleaning, unjamming, adjusting, inspecting, or repairing exposes someone to unexpected energization, startup, or stored energy. OSHA’s control-of-hazardous-energy rule requires an employer program with procedures, training, and periodic inspection where servicing or maintenance carries that risk (29 CFR 1910.147).
Only the facility’s authorized employee executes the machine-specific procedure: identify the energy sources, shut down in the prescribed order, isolate, apply locks or tags as authorized, control stored energy, and verify isolation before work. An emergency stop, control button, foot control, or stationary needle does not by itself prove energy isolation.
After work, the authorized employee controls inspection, clearing, lock removal, notification, and return to service under the written procedure. The knife user does not leave a blade, offcut, loose thread, fixture, or gauge inside the machine envelope.
Select the knife by observed geometry, not inherited folklore
The two Hyde knives form one documented choice:

Both may legitimately participate at the station; the released process and a controlled sample determine the choice.
Also refuse the wrong kind of “fit” question. These are complete handled knives, not replacement needles, awls, guides, feed parts, or machine-mounted blades. Their dimensions describe the knife blades, not compatibility with a machine model.
The buyer’s two-knife test
Where the process owner is choosing between them, run a documented trial on representative scrap, a training assembly, or an authorized first piece:
Sharpen and inspect both knives to the same plant standard.
Use the same material condition, work support, marked waste boundary, operator, and acceptance method.
Make only the released hand cut, completely outside the operating machine danger zone.
Compare required force, visibility of the line, ability to keep the protected layer clear, tendency to flex or wander, control at the endpoint, surface marking, edge damage, and operator grip security.
Inspect the work, not the operator’s preference alone. Record the selected model and why it met the released acceptance criteria.
That test selects a hand tool for a defined operation. It does not validate machine fit, authorize operation inside a guard, or prove that one letter historically “belongs” to the task.
Inspect the knife and set the work area
Inspect before the first piece and after any drop, bind, unexpected hard contact, or change in cut feel.
Edge and point: reject chips, rolled sections, flat spots, cracks, or a point condition that changes the intended control. Do not continue by adding force to a dull edge.
Blade: reject visible bending, deep corrosion, or damage at the blade-to-ferrule transition. The blade is permanently riveted; there is no replaceable-blade seating step.
Ferrule and handle: remove the knife from service for looseness, splitting, rotation, a raised rivet, oil saturation that defeats grip, or any movement between blade, ferrule, and handle.
Cleanliness: remove adhesive, wax, leather dust, or residue by the approved method. Do not soak the hardwood handle or use an unapproved chemical.
Sharpness: use the shop’s safe test method on test media. Never thumb the edge.
Set a dedicated hand-work zone with enough light to distinguish waste from protected material. Clear cords, thread loops, offcuts, and tools that can snag the hand or shift the article. Provide a protected place where the knife can be set down without an exposed edge projecting into the reach path.
Workholding is not optional. Support the article so it cannot roll, rock, spring closed, or rotate as the blade loads it. Use a fixture, clamp, nest, bench pin, hold-down, or other approved support suited to the work. Position holding force on a retained area that will not be crushed or marked. Never use the free hand as the fixture directly ahead of the edge, behind a likely breakthrough, or beneath a layer the point can penetrate.
PPE follows the employer’s hazard assessment, not a universal shopping list. OSHA requires hand protection selected for the task, conditions, duration, and identified cut or puncture hazards (29 CFR 1910.138). Use appropriate eye or face protection where broken tips, hard debris, or flying particles are a hazard, consistent with 29 CFR 1910.133. Add footwear, apron, sleeve, hearing, or respiratory protection only where the facility’s assessment and the actual operation require it.
Prove the cut before releasing production
On a representative trial:
Mark the intended cut and the protected boundary.
Set the work in the approved support and challenge it gently in the directions the knife load will act. If it shifts, improve the hold before cutting.
Establish a balanced, dry grip. Keep the wrist in a controllable range and the thumb and fingers behind the working edge.
Plan an exit path into clear waste or a stop. A cut with no safe endpoint is not ready.
Place the free hand where neither a slip, breakthrough, nor work rotation can bring the blade to it.
Use the least force that produces a controlled cut. If the edge skates, the article deflects, or the knife binds, stop; do not solve instability with more force.
Inspect the trial against the released standard. The process owner approves or corrects the method before production quantity begins.
There is no universal cutting angle, stroke count, feed direction, or pressure in the source packet. Leather temper, thread, construction, access, desired retained edge, and the actual knife condition change them.
Run the authorized production loop
Receive from the machine operation
The trained operator completes the machine cycle according to the machine-specific procedure. Do not hover with an unsheathed knife while the machine is cycling. Wait for the defined safe transfer condition, then move the work to the designated knife support. If the work cannot be removed as expected, stop and classify the condition; do not pull against a trapped article or cut it free.
Identify the exact hand-work
Compare the piece with the traveler and approved sample. Locate only the thread end, channel/seam margin, loose fiber, or other feature explicitly assigned to hand cutting. Confirm the protected stitch and surfaces. If the feature is absent, already damaged, or different from the sample, route the piece as an exception instead of “making it look right.”
Secure and orient the article
Fixture the work so the cut is visible, supported close to the blade, and directed into a safe exit. Reposition the fixture or article rather than reaching across the edge or cutting blind. Keep the knife away from the machine envelope; a convenient machine bed is not automatically an approved cutting board.
Make the controlled hand cut
Use the model released for the operation. Start with the edge on the designated waste side. Keep the blade aligned with the intended cut, the free hand out of the projected travel, and the point clear of every protected layer. Use a short, deliberate stroke the support can resist. Stop before the endpoint if visibility is lost.
For a thread end, support or tension it only by the approved method and cut the designated end without loading the sound stitch line. For channel or seam dressing, remove only the material the standard identifies as waste.
If the cut requires prying, twisting, lateral levering, or using the point as a pick against a hard machine surface, stop. Neither knife is a pry tool. A clipped point is not permission to lever.
Inspect before the next machine or finishing operation
Remove loose cuttings and place the knife in its protected position. Under adequate light, compare the result with the approved sample or criteria. Look specifically for:
a sound required stitch line, with only the designated end or waste removed;
no unintended cut-through into a protected layer;
no long score continuing beyond the assigned trim;
no proud waste, loose fiber, or sharp cut remnant that would obstruct the next operation;
no surface mark, crush, or fixture damage beyond the permitted standard; and
no blade fragment or other foreign material in the work.
Do not “repair” a severed stitch, deep score, exposed reinforcement, or out-of-limit seam with more knife work. Mark and segregate the piece, preserve traceability, and send it through the plant’s nonconformance route.
Hand off
Record the operation, knife model where required, first-piece or in-process inspection result, quantity accepted, quantity held, and any edge change or unusual resistance that may matter to the next piece. Present the work in the orientation and container the receiving operation expects. Communicate any approved deviation directly; a traveler signature is not a substitute for telling the next operator that the process changed.
What goes wrong — and the controlled response
The blade skates before entering the intended waste. Stop. Do not push harder. Check sharpness, contamination, support, line visibility, and whether the selected knife passed the approved trial. Refixture or escalate the method.
The work moves under load. Freeze the hands and withdraw only along a safe path. Replace hand pressure with positive workholding. Reinspect the piece because movement may have carried a hidden cut into a protected layer.
The knife binds or suddenly releases. Stop production. A bind followed by breakthrough is a laceration and over-cut path. Check whether the material condition changed, the support is pinching the cut, or the edge is damaged. Do not twist the blade free.
A sound stitch is nicked or severed. Segregate and identify the piece. Do not trim adjacent stitches to make the defect look uniform.
The cut reaches a lining, upper, reinforcement, or other protected layer. Stop, mark the location, and quarantine the piece. Recheck the workholding and cut-depth method before another piece.
The clipped point or other edge chips. Stop immediately; retain the knife and search for the fragment under the facility’s foreign-material procedure. Hold all work since the last confirmed blade inspection. Do not grind away evidence before the cause review.
The operator needs to reach around a guard or into the machine to finish the cut. The operation is not authorized as normal hand-work. Withdraw, notify supervision, and route the condition to the machine-specific safeguarding or lockout/tagout process.
The article is jammed or retained by the machine. Do not cut, pull, or pry it free. Treat unjamming as servicing whenever unexpected energization or stored energy can cause injury; use the facility procedure and authorized employee.
The A/B instruction conflicts with the observed result. Hold the job at first-piece quantity. Revalidate by geometry and accepted output, then correct the local instruction through document control.
The edge needs sharpening increasingly often. Quarantine the knife for inspection and check material contamination, hard contact, bevel maintenance, and the sharpening standard. Do not alter the bevel freehand to chase rate.
Rust or a rough edge appears after storage. Remove the knife from production until cleaned, inspected, and restored under the shop standard. High-carbon steel requires dry storage and a light approved protective treatment where product contamination rules allow.
An injury or near miss occurs. Make the area safe, summon first aid or emergency response, preserve the scene and tool as required, report promptly, and suspend the affected method until the employer’s review releases it. Production recovery waits.
The receiving operation rejects the hand-off. Preserve the rejected piece and compare it with the accepted sample at the same lighting and orientation. Determine whether the cause is machine output, knife work, inspection, or an ambiguous standard before recutting.
End-of-run care and shift hand-off
Count and reconcile work, holds, and scrap. Clean the designated area so no thread loop, offcut, chipped edge fragment, or loose tool remains near the machine. Inspect the knife again. Clean the blade with the approved method, dry it fully, and apply only a product-compatible protectant allowed by the facility. Protect the edge in storage; never drop a bare knife into a shared drawer.
Sharpen under the plant’s controlled standard, away from the machine operating zone. Maintain the established edge geometry, remove the burr safely, clean away abrasive residue, and reinspect the point, blade, ferrule, and handle. A knife that cannot be restored without changing its geometry or reducing the blade below the plant’s service limit is removed from service.
At shift change, communicate which model was released, current edge condition, first-piece status, open holds, deviations, and any machine or fixture issue. Never transfer an active personal lock as an informal hand-off; lockout/tagout transfer and removal follow the employer’s written program.
The short history
The knife name comes from the machine, not the other way around. Gordon McKay commercialized the system through factories, and the process became known as McKay or Blake construction (Massachusetts Historical Society). The hand knives standardized around that bench kept the machine’s name, and Hyde still catalogs both McKay Stitcher patterns.
The history stops there for a reason. The durable fact is the surviving industrial pattern: two differently sized riveted knives still ordered by the same trade letters generations after the machine named them.
Select between them through the approved work sample and output criteria; do not infer machine compatibility or an undocumented A/B operation assignment.
