Job: inspect an identified fabric piece or roll at the designated table, mark a condition under the current quality plan, support the goods by the approved method, perform only an authorized local trim, read the area back against named acceptance criteria, and release or quarantine the material with traceable records.

Result: each treated location retains its material and defect identity; the exact blade and controlled station instruction are known; nothing is cut merely because it looks removable; the post-trim inspection is independent of the act of cutting; and any uncertain, damaged, nonconforming, or unaccounted condition leaves normal flow.

The job takes the time required by the plant's inspection sampling, marking, trim, readback, and disposition rules. A line-speed or shipping demand cannot replace an acceptance criterion.

Difficulty: visually fine, procedurally demanding. The physical trim may be small. The consequential work is deciding whether a visible condition is authorized for local correction, protecting the surrounding structure, preserving material identity, accounting for removed matter, and proving that the correction did not create a second defect.

Both entries are bare mill blades, not complete cutting assemblies. The held evidence does not prove which handle, fixture, guard, carrier, or installed configuration is approved for either blade in this operation.

The product guides contain older authored descriptions that distinguish “fine” 080 inspection work from a more general 081 role and describe flat-blade technique. Those passages are context, not exact-model manufacturer procedure. The accepted catalog evidence establishes identity and dimensions; it does not establish the claimed functional ranking or a trim method.

Everything else the job needs: a released material specification and quality plan for the exact fabric · roll, piece, lot, style, color, finish, and process-state identity · a controlled defect vocabulary and disposition matrix · the approved inspection and sampling method · the exact station instruction naming the permitted blade assembly · verified blade/handle or blade/fixture fit records · the approved table, illumination, viewing aids, marking system, supports, and material-handling equipment · machine-specific energy-control and guarding procedures where the table is integrated with powered feed, take-up, tension, inspection, or winding equipment · foreign-material and fragment-accounting rules · task-specific protective measures selected from the facility's hazard assessment · approved cleanup, storage, waste, repair, reinspection, release, and quarantine routes. Build one controlled job packet that travels with the material. At minimum it must name:

Material identity: roll or piece ID, lot, style or construction code, process state, face/back or other orientation only where the material specification defines it, and the order or quality-plan revision.

Material controls: handling, support, tension or slack state if controlled, layer separation if applicable, contamination restrictions, and what lies beneath or behind the presented surface.

Accounting and records: marking traceability, removed-material or fragment accounting where required, before/after evidence, disposition codes, quarantine location, and downstream notification.

Do not begin from a general instruction such as “burl defects,” “trim slubs flush,” or “use an 080/081.” Those phrases state an intended job class but leave the material decision and physical operation uncontrolled.

Admit the blade without inventing a selection rule

Read the exact model or pattern from the controlled station record and match it to the blade's identity-preserving package or plant record. Keep 62030/080 and 62090/081 distinct even if a local nickname treats both as “inspection blades.”

Use only this decision:

If the released station configuration names 62030/080, admit 62030 after the complete assembly and its condition pass the plant procedure.

If it names 62090/081, admit 62090 on the same basis.

If it permits either model, require the controlled document to state how the choice is made and how the complete assembly is qualified. Do not write a local preference from dimensions.

If it names only a width, “flat blade,” “Standard blade,” “mill knife,” or a visual shape, stop. Those descriptions do not prove exact identity.

If neither exact model is approved for the fabric and station, use neither. Row membership is not application approval.

No held source establishes that 62030 and 62090 share unlisted point shape, edge profile, corner treatment, grind geometry, retained-end geometry, alloy specification beyond the Standard high-carbon family description, or cutting behavior.

Do not infer handle fit from width, install a bare blade by hand, substitute a neighboring pattern, alter the retained end, shim a slot, copy projection, or tighten by feel.

Inspect the presented material before marking

Verify the packet against the physical roll or piece before assessing a finding. Stop on a mixed label, missing identity, wrong process state, conflicting orientation record, broken chain of custody, or any condition that makes the applicable plan uncertain.

Present and inspect the material exactly as its controlled plan requires. This guide does not choose:

face, back, transmitted, reflected, angled, moving, or stationary viewing;

illumination level, color quality, viewing distance, magnification, or inspection speed;

full-width versus sampled inspection;

relaxed, supported, fed, or tensioned condition;

single-ply versus layered presentation;

defect name, size, severity, frequency, or allowable count; or

Classify only with the released defect vocabulary. Describe what is observed, its controlled location, and its status; do not turn a visual impression into a root cause. A raised feature may be intentional construction, a repair feature, a loose end, embedded foreign matter, damage, or another condition whose treatment differs. If the classifier cannot distinguish the authorized trim class, mark DEFECT IDENTITY HOLD.

Before any change, capture the evidence required by the plan: location reference, defect code, inspector, time, material identity, and before-state record. If downstream review may need the original condition, preserve it rather than trimming away the evidence.

Mark the exact location and the no-cut boundary

Apply only the approved marking system. The material owner must establish whether a marker, tag, map, digital coordinate, edge notation, removable indicator, or another method is compatible with the goods and downstream process.

The mark must connect the physical location to the packet without obscuring the feature or becoming a new contaminant. Where the quality plan defines a protected surrounding zone or a no-cut side, record it by the approved method. Never draw an arbitrary trim line or decide how much structure may be removed.

One mark receives one disposition. If several nearby findings overlap, if the feature extends beyond the inspected area, or if the planned trim could affect an adjacent yarn, surface, coating, layer, seam, repair, printed feature, or edge, stop and obtain a combined disposition. Splitting one uncertain condition into several “small trims” does not reduce its consequence.

Establish the approved support state

Move the marked location to the station's controlled trim position without losing orientation or identity. The released instruction must name the support surface or fixture, material state, operator access, protected backing, and how hands are excluded from the edge path.

This guide supplies no workholding recipe. Do not assume the cloth should be pulled taut, left slack, lifted, pressed flat, folded, stacked, separated into plies, held in the free hand, pinned, clamped, weighted, vacuum-held, or placed over a sacrificial pad.

Confirm before proceeding:

the marked condition remains visible and agrees with the record;

the material is supported exactly as the released instruction requires;

the space beneath and beyond the authorized working zone is known;

hands and other body parts are outside the controlled edge path and release path;

no loose object, prior trimming, hard table feature, hidden layer, or unrelated material is in the authorized path;

the complete blade assembly is the approved configuration and has passed its issue inspection; and

powered feed, take-up, tension, or other equipment is in the required energy state.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 applies where unexpected energization, startup, or stored-energy release during servicing could injure an employee; the employer determines applicability and any limited exception. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 addresses machine guarding. A hand blade is not a substitute for guarding, and this guide does not decide whether inspection-table trimming is production, servicing, or another activity at a particular plant.

Perform only the released trim

The qualified operator now follows the exact station instruction.

Use this control loop around the released method:

Read the defect code, approved action, material identity, exact blade assembly, and instruction revision aloud or by the plant's positive-verification method.

Confirm the marked location and support state have not changed.

Expose or position the edge only through the approved handling method.

Execute the named trim without adding a second motion, alternate direction, deeper pass, improvised support, or neighboring area.

Stop at the instruction's defined endpoint. Do not continue until the area “looks better.”

Return the edge to its approved safe state and preserve all removed material as the quality or foreign-material plan requires.

Keep the location in POST-TRIM HOLD until readback is complete.

Stop immediately if the blade slips, drags, catches, tears, deflects, moves in its holder, contacts the table or an unintended layer, leaves an uncertain fragment, changes the material outside the authorized zone, or requires more force or motion than the instruction permits. These observations trigger containment; they do not diagnose dullness, wrong blade, wrong support, wrong tension, or incompatible fabric. Root-cause assignment belongs to the designated technical owner.

Do not “touch up” an incomplete or questionable result freehand. If the plan has no rework branch, quarantine the material.

Read back independently and decide disposition

The post-trim check is a new inspection, not a glance by the cutting hand. Restore the exact inspection presentation required by the plan. The authorized inspector compares the location with the named criteria and records:

original material and location identity;

original defect class and approved action;

exact blade model/pattern and assembly or station ID;

trim instruction and revision;

operator and time;

removed-material or fragment-accounting result where applicable;

post-trim observations under the controlled inspection conditions;

condition of the surrounding and underlying material as required by the plan;

blade/assembly post-use check required by the station procedure;

release owner and downstream notification.

Never accept the work because the feature is smaller, the operator is experienced, the blade appears sharp, production has already continued, or a later finishing operation may hide it. Record what the controlled method establishes.

Physically prevent quarantined material from rejoining conforming flow; preserve the before/after evidence and name the disposition owner.

Close the station and preserve traceability

After material disposition, account for the blade assembly under the station procedure. Do not wipe it on fabric, clothing, or an unapproved rag; touch-test the edge; apply a generic cleaner, oil, rust preventive, or abrasive; or return a contaminated or questionable blade to ready stock.

Route residue, removed fiber, markers, wipes, damaged goods, and other waste through the material and facility plans. Cleanup must not spread a blade fragment, foreign material, fiber, or chemical residue into conforming goods.

Close the location record and reconcile all open holds at shift handoff. Do not report “all defects corrected” when the record contains holds.

Safety boundary

In a covered workplace, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.242(a) requires employer-provided and employee-used hand tools to be maintained in a safe condition. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 places PPE selection within workplace hazard assessment, suitability, fit, and training; 29 CFR 1910.138 makes hand-protection selection specific to the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards.

Those requirements establish an employer control boundary, not a universal PPE list. The facility must also evaluate whether a selected glove or loose item creates an entanglement hazard around associated equipment.

Buy or issue only the exact model already approved by the plant's station master and material/quality plan. If no exact configuration is approved, the guide's answer is neither pending qualification.
