Job boundary: this is localized coating removal at horizontal edges and transitions: window sills or stools, door thresholds, stair and landing edges, and the perimeter where a floor meets trim or another material. It is not whole-floor scraping, adhesive or mastic removal, residue cleanup, heat-gun stripping, glazing-putty removal, or a generic scrape-shave job. Each of those has a separate diagnosis, tool set, hazard profile, and acceptance endpoint.

Job: remove only the coating that the admitted project requires removed from an edge or transition, without damaging the substrate, opening an assembly joint, disturbing a hazardous layer, or exporting chips, dust, liquid, or sludge beyond containment.

Time: no universal duration applies. Test work, remover dwell, repeat cycles, cleanup, drying, and return-to-service gates belong to the exact systems. Appearance and touch are not gates.

Difficulty: high consequence at small scale. These locations concentrate dissimilar materials, joints, glazing, and occupied-space exposure.

Diagnose three layers before selecting a method

Name the coating condition without guessing its chemistry

Record every visible layer, whether it is bonded or releasing, and why removal is proposed. A colored film may be paint, clear finish, floor coating, sealant overlap, factory finish, or an unknown stack. Appearance does not prove chemistry.

Separate four conditions:

Localized failed coating. Loose, lifted, cracked, or detached material may justify bounded removal back to an accepted boundary.

Sound but incompatible coating. Removal may be required even when adhesion is good, but only the identified old and new systems can establish that.

Unknown multi-layer build. Stop before chemistry, heat, sanding, or aggressive contact. An unknown stack cannot supply a remover, tool, or disposal decision.

Do not rename adhesive, glazing compound, caulk, filler, or flooring residue as “coating.” When the exposed material changes class, the job changes.

Identify the substrate that must survive

A sill or stool may be solid or engineered wood, masonry, metal, polymer, composite, or a clad assembly. A threshold may combine metal, wood, elastomer, fasteners, sealant, weather strip, and finish flooring. A floor edge may be wood, resilient material, laminate, concrete, stone, or a prior patch beside trim.

“Wood,” “metal,” and “floor” are not sufficient. If the substrate is soft, decayed, water-damaged, split, delaminated, corroded, loose, historically significant, or unidentified, stop. Removal cannot repair a failed substrate.

Map the assembly, not just the visible strip

Document the transition before masking it. Mark glass, glazing compound, sash, seals, joints, fasteners, floor seams, gaps, trim, membranes, and adjacent finishes. Establish what must remain untouched.

At a window, distinguish the room-side stool from the exterior sill and distinguish both from sash and glazing. This guide does not authorize glass shielding, heat near glass, putty removal, point handling, or sash disassembly.

At a threshold, stop for movement, leakage, a loose plate, damaged weatherproofing, unknown fasteners, an accessibility or fire-door requirement, or a joint the work would open. At a floor edge, stop when coating crosses under trim, into a movement gap, or onto another material.

Clear the hazard and occupied-space stops

Pre-1978 paint: determine lead status before disturbance

EPA states that residential lead paint was banned in 1978, that worn paint on doors and window sills can create hazardous chips and dust, and that pre-1978 renovation can create dangerous lead dust. Paid work in covered housing or child-occupied facilities generally falls under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Program; authorized states may administer their own programs.

Do not convert a job title or a small-looking edge into an exemption. Establish the building, user class, jurisdiction, surface, disturbance area, testing basis, and applicable program. When lead is present or presumed, the responsible lead-safe plan owns containment, occupant exclusion, work practices, cleanup, verification, and records. EPA’s RRP work-practice page requires containment that prevents dust and debris leaving the work area, prohibits specified high-risk practices, and requires thorough cleanup followed by verification. This guide supplies no alternate lead method.

Possible asbestos: stop at flooring, backing, adhesive, or another suspect layer

You cannot identify asbestos by sight. EPA advises treating suspect material as asbestos and leaving it alone until a trained and accredited professional handles sampling or work. EPA also warns against scraping, sanding, or power-stripping asbestos flooring or backing (EPA — Protect Your Family from Exposures to Asbestos).

If work at a floor or threshold exposes resilient tile or sheet material, backing, black or other unidentified adhesive, underlayment, patching compound, insulation, or another suspect layer, stop without probing, scraping, sweeping, or vacuuming it. Preserve containment and obtain the required asbestos determination. This guide does not assign an age cutoff, visual test, DIY sample method, or abatement route.

Chemical, fire, and occupied-room stop

No chemical remover enters the job until its exact label, TDS, and SDS admit the coating, substrate, assembly, location, application method, tool, barriers, PPE, ventilation, ignition control, cleanup, and waste. “Citrus,” “low odor,” or “water based” is not a hazard determination.

OSHA’s chemical-remover guidance identifies fire and explosion, respiratory, contact, access, slip, electrical, and other hazards; it notes that remover vapors may be toxic, corrosive, and heavier than air in enclosed spaces (OSHA — Chemical Removers). Its shipyard controls are not a universal home recipe, but the hazard list defeats casual substitution.

Check old products for methylene chloride, dichloromethane, DCM, or CAS 75-09-2. EPA prohibits all consumer uses and most industrial and commercial uses, including most paint and coating removal, and tells consumers not to use old products already purchased (EPA — Risk Management for Methylene Chloride).

Heat and flame stop

This guide authorizes no torch, open flame, infrared device, heat plate, heat gun, steam source, or improvised warming. Heat near lead, glazing, cavities, floor finishes, sealants, adhesives, polymer parts, and concealed combustible material creates a different job.

Create a job card before touching the edge. It must name:

the coating or bounded unknown-layer disposition;

substrate and complete assembly;

reason and exact limit of removal;

lead, asbestos, and other hazard determination;

admitted method: leave/recoat, dry hand removal, wet lead-safe removal, or an exact chemical-remover system;

exact product candidate and the accepted fact supporting its candidacy;

permitted preparation, contact, motion, blade presentation, pressure, dwell, repeat cycle, and stop;

protection, containment, ventilation, PPE, receiving container, cleanup, neutralization, drying, waste, and return-to-service route;

Do not import the queue’s “long pulls,” “two-handed,” or “horizontal wood,” or local guides’ angle, force, bevel, grain, heat, solvent, or maintenance statements. They are not accepted operating instructions for this system.

Select the method before the tool

Leave and prepare

A sound edge should not be stripped merely because a scraper is available.

Bounded hand removal

Models 02070, 02400, and 02568 have manufacturer support for paint or coating removal. That makes them candidates, not a universal method.

The only qualitative role distinctions carried here are source-grounded:

02070 is the narrower bent candidate for detailed or hard-to-reach removal.

02400 is the wider chisel-edge candidate for paint and putty removal.

02568 is the wider chisel-edge candidate with an offset Hyde says helps protect fingers or knuckles during heavy-duty scraping; its Hammerhead® is inactive in this job.

No statement selects orientation, angle, push or pull, stroke, grain direction, hand count, body weight, or force.

Chemical-assisted removal

Choose this branch only after the exact remover system passes the joined-document gate and a complete test patch. The remover maker controls application, dwell, covering, inspection, reactivation, tool material, cleanup, neutralization, dry condition, and waste. This edge guide adds the assembly map and transition protections; it does not rewrite chemical procedure.

Route out

Whole-floor coating removal belongs to the floor-coating or full-strip system and equipment selected for that surface. Specks, labels, and flat residue belong to the canonical shave-scraping job when authored. Routing preserves job grain and prevents a hand edge tool from becoming a universal stripping system.

Protect transitions and prove a representative test

A generic drop cloth does not prove chemical resistance, slip safety, non-staining contact, or containment. Preserve an unambiguous removal boundary.

The test must include the actual coating stack, substrate, edge, adjoining material, and access. Carry it through cleanup and the next system’s readiness check. Wet release alone is not success.

Inspect the dry test under ordinary and raking light for:

substrate cuts, scratches, dents, fiber lift, burnish, discoloration, etching, softening, swelling, or corrosion;

damage to glass, glazing, sealant, weather strip, hardware, fasteners, joints, floor seams, baseboard, or adjacent finish;

coating still bonded below the required endpoint;

chemical, cleaner, neutralizer, chip, dust, or sludge residue;

an altered joint, exposed gap, moisture path, or newly visible suspect layer;

failure against the next coating maker’s preparation or readiness criterion.

Do not enlarge a test that has not passed dry.

Run removal as staged evidence, not one continuous attack

Stage A — release only the admitted section

Work within the passed test and exact instructions. Keep the boundary visible and place removed material into the approved receiving path. Stop if behavior changes, the tool contacts a prohibited component, the substrate marks, or the assembly opens.

This is the farthest a universal guide can go honestly. Exact motion, angle, force, width of bite, pass overlap, direction, dwell, and reapplication remain system-specific.

Stage B — inspect the exposed substrate and edge

Before continuing, confirm the material is still the identified substrate, the endpoint is correct, and no hidden layer, fastener, joint, moisture, glazing, resilient flooring, backing, or adhesive has appeared. A changed layer invalidates the test.

Do not chase coating under trim, beneath a threshold plate, into a floor gap, under a sash component, or across a material transition. Stop at the admitted assembly boundary and obtain a revised plan.

Stage C — accept the local removal

The local section passes only when:

required coating is removed and approved coating remains;

substrate and assembly are unchanged except for the authorized exposure;

adjacent surfaces remain protected and undamaged;

chips, dust, liquid, and sludge remain in containment;

no hazard or unknown layer has appeared; and

the exact system admits continuation.

Repeat only into an equivalent section. Re-test when coating build, substrate, adjacency, access, conditions, or method changes.

Cleanup, containment, disposal, and next-operation handoff

Keep dry chips, lead-controlled debris, chemical sludge, cleanup liquid, absorbents, used PPE, and ordinary uncontaminated protection separated according to their actual identities. One mixed pail is not a disposal plan.

For chemical work, follow the label, SDS, local waste rules, and approved spill route. Do not sweep suspect asbestos debris, use an ordinary vacuum on lead or asbestos material, pour liquid to a drain or soil, let sludge dry in an occupied room, or put unknown waste into ordinary trash.

Carbon steel, electrocoating, nylon, hardwood, rivets, and Hammerhead® are facts, not solvent, immersion, sharpening, or storage permissions.

Judge the edge dry at the next-operation gate. The next coating maker owns preparation, primer, cure, and return to service. “Clean-looking” is not finish-ready.

What goes wrong — and the controlled recovery

The coating will not release under the admitted method. Stop.

The substrate scratches, crushes, fuzzes, etches, softens, darkens, or lifts. Stop and preserve the witness. The method or tool is incompatible, the coating was not ready, or the substrate diagnosis was wrong.

The coating keeps running under trim or a threshold. The assembly boundary was wrong. Do not pry off trim or chase the film. Revise the assembly plan.

A black adhesive, resilient backing, unidentified tile, or suspect underlayment appears. Stop without further disturbance and invoke the asbestos determination.

Glass, glazing putty, sash hardware, or a glazing seal enters the work zone. Stop and route to the glazing system. Do not import heat or hacking technique.

Odor, irritation, dizziness, alarm, inadequate ventilation, or an ignition-control failure occurs. Leave the active area and follow the SDS and emergency plan. A respirator or open window is not an improvised cure.

The cleaned area stays glossy, greasy, tacky, alkaline, acidic, odorous, or otherwise outside the next-system endpoint. Do not coat it. Return to the exact remover or coating maker’s cleanup and readiness instructions.

The final edge is visually uneven but sound. Do not turn this into generic shave-scraping or whole-floor leveling. The next coating system decides whether additional bounded removal, preparation, or a larger finish break is required.

Occupants must re-enter before cleanup verification or chemical release. The schedule loses.

Which Hyde scraper should I buy for this job?

Begin with the admitted coating/substrate/assembly system, then select among the three manufacturer-supported candidates by their verified roles. The 02070 is the narrower detailed bent option; 02400 is a wider chisel-edge option; 02568 adds an offset Hyde says helps protect fingers or knuckles. The 12010 remains a held lead because its packet proves construction but not this application or technique. None is universal.

What angle, direction, pressure, or stroke should I use?

Only the exact current manufacturer or responsible project instruction can answer for the selected coating, tool, substrate, and assembly. No universal value or motion is established here.

Should I use chemical stripper first?

Only if an exact remover admits the coating, substrate, assembly, occupied-space conditions, tool, protection, cleanup, and waste route and passes a complete test patch. There is no universal remover, dwell, neutralizer, or solvent.

Can I use a heat gun on a sill or threshold?

Not under this guide. Heat creates lead, fire, glazing, cavity, sealant, adhesive, and polymer risks and belongs to its own admitted system.

Is this the guide for stripping a painted floor?

Only for a bounded floor edge or transition. A whole floor requires its own coating diagnosis, production equipment, access plan, containment, and finish system.

What if the floor edge exposes black adhesive?

Stop without scraping, sanding, sweeping, or vacuuming it. Appearance cannot determine asbestos content. Obtain the required accredited-professional determination.

When is the surface ready to recoat?

When the exact removal system and next coating system both say it is ready under actual conditions and the staged readback passes. Dry-looking, odor-free, or smooth are not universal release criteria.
