What “without scaffolding” honestly means: a QuickReach® pole may let a trained airless operator spray some or all of a two-story stairwell from full treads, landings, or level floors. The title does not prove that either pole reaches a particular wall, that the operator can see and control the fan, or that scaffolding, a lift, a manufacturer-rated stair-access system, fall protection, or a qualified-access contractor is unnecessary. If the stopped dry map does not close from legitimate footing, the pole method ends and the access plan takes over.
Job: diagnose, isolate, mask, and airless-spray the wall fields of a two-story stairwell from authorized standing positions, preserving control and a workable wet edge while keeping the circulation route and everyone outside the exclusion zone protected.
Time: no universal duration. Stair geometry, substrate repairs, coating instructions, masking extent, ventilation plan, authorized access, and dry/recoat/service states own the schedule. Trigger time is only one part of the job; the exclusion, masking, setup, pressure relief, cleanup, inspection, and release are the work.
Difficulty: advanced airless and access planning. This is not a first airless project. A remote tip at stairwell reach magnifies small hand movement, hides film defects, complicates hose control, and turns every reposition into a pressure-safety event.

Hyde’s exact catalog claim says it extends from 5.5' to 8.5' to paint heights up to 16'. Use it only where the stopped dry map proves the complete section can be reached, seen, and controlled within that stated role.
Do not convert its 12-foot pole length into a promised wall height. Use it only when the 28680 does not close the map and the 28690 still passes every footing, visibility, swing, and control gate.
The two poles are alternatives by reach requirement, not a required pair. This guide adds no AnglePRO®, spray-shield, gun, pump, hose, tip, masking, access, or protective-equipment node to the exact graph.
A product title supplies reach hardware, not permission. Open these gates in order:
Stair and access gate. Record the stair type: straight, L-shaped, switchback, open-well, curved, or split landing. Measure the wall planes and locate every full tread, landing, level floor, rail, newel, opening, ceiling return, fixture, window, and blind corner. A pole is not fall protection.
Egress and public gate. Close the stair at both ends and provide the building’s authorized alternate route. If the stair is required egress and cannot be taken out of service, or if occupants, customers, children, pets, or other trades cannot be kept out, do not spray. A person may not pass beneath a live tip, wet work, hose, or suspended pole.
Electrical gate. Identify lights, fans, smoke devices, exposed wiring, receptacles, temporary power, and other energized conditions in the pole’s travel and overspray zones. QuickReach is anodized aluminum and has no documented insulating rating.
Airless-system gate. Positively identify the pump, hose, gun, tip, guard, and both candidate poles. The QuickReach family page says “standard guns and tips,” but that is not a thread specification, gun-size limit, pressure rating, or proof that the particular gun fits. No QuickReach pressure rating appears in the accepted product claims.
Coating and ventilation gate. The coating maker’s current label, technical data, and safety data must authorize the substrate, preparation, application method, conditions, ventilation, ignition controls, protective equipment, cleanup, waste, dry/recoat state, and return to service. This guide supplies none of those values or schedules.
One open gate stops the job. A successful reach test cannot authorize a missing product join, unsafe egress, live electrical exposure, or an incompatible coating.
Diagnose the walls before masking them
Inspect every wall plane in strong light from the positions that will also be used for final readback. Identify drywall, plaster, masonry, wood, metal, previous coating, patch material, water staining, active moisture, powdering or chalk, gloss, grease, smoke residue, failed caulk, loose paper, cracking, peeling, blistering, and repairs that stand proud.
The proposed coating system must resolve four questions:
Is the existing finish sound enough to receive it?
What cleaning, dulling, repair, primer, or other preparation is required?
Are the substrate, old coating, patch, and new coating compatible?
Can the specified film be applied by the authorized airless equipment in this occupied-building geometry?
Do not spray over active moisture, loose or moving material, an unidentified contaminant, or a failed prior coating and call the new film a repair. Stop for substrate diagnosis. If preparation will disturb paint in pre-1978 U.S. housing or a child-occupied facility, resolve the applicable lead-safe requirements before ordinary scraping or sanding. This spray guide does not supply a containment or hazardous-paint procedure.
Make a small, authorized representative preparation and coating proof where it can be inspected and corrected. Judge adhesion and appearance only at the coating maker’s stated evaluation state. A wet patch that looks acceptable does not prove compatibility or final appearance.
Build the exclusion, masking, and staging plan
Treat the stairwell as a vertical spray enclosure joined to a circulation route. Atomized coating can travel to floors, rails, doors, windows, fixtures, adjacent rooms, returns, and the level below.
Remove what the property plan permits. Mask every non-target surface inside the expected spray and fallout boundary using materials and attachment methods authorized for the exact surface and coating. Protect individual treads and landings without creating a loose, curled, slick, or hidden walking edge. Loose plastic is not a stair walking surface. Keep nosings and the approved walking line readable.
Contain openings according to the site and coating plan, but do not block required egress, alarms, controls, or the authorized ventilation path. HVAC shutdown, isolation, or continued operation is a site decision; this guide does not prescribe it. Masking and a handheld shield are work controls, not additions to this product graph.
Stage the pump and coating on a level, authorized surface outside the stair walking line and outside the pole’s sweep. Route the hose so it cannot cross required egress, catch a tread edge, pull across a rail, enter the operator’s feet, or be pinched at a door. Plan enough slack for each mapped section without leaving uncontrolled coils in the stair. Assign a protected lowering area where the pole can come down without passing over a person, finished surface, or open coating.
Put a physical barrier or attended control at both entries. Confirm the spill plan, emergency communication, lighting, and alternate route before coating enters the system.
Map the stairwell stopped and dry
The dry map is performed with the system stopped, de-energized or otherwise made safe as its instructions require, depressurized, unloaded with coating, and assembled only to the extent current instructions authorize. Do not use pressure to test reach.
Divide the stairwell into working stations: lower floor, lower-flight full treads, intermediate landing, upper-flight full treads, upper landing, and any other level floor. At each station:
Establish a balanced stance with both feet fully supported on legitimate architecture and the stair edge visible.
Hold the pole with two-hand control and rehearse raising, placing, translating, stopping, lowering, and turning.
Keep the head square to the target wall plane and trace only the area that can be reached without leaning, twisting over the open well, stepping across unequal treads, locking the body at the end of reach, or moving blind.
Confirm continuous sight of the target, tip/guard area, fresh-result zone, footing, hose, and exclusion boundary. If any one disappears, the section is not admitted.
Confirm the full swing and lowering paths clear rails, fixtures, windows, ceilings, masked surfaces, and the exclusion boundary.
Rehearse the planned hose travel and the exact place where pressure relief and repositioning will occur.
Map the 28680 first. If it closes a section with control reserve, it owns that section. Test the 28690 only for sections the 28680 cannot close. If the longer pole reaches but bounces, lags, obscures the target, crowds the ceiling, cannot turn or lower safely, or pulls the operator toward a nosing, it fails.
Classify the result:
Pole-complete: every field section passes with one of the two poles, and finish readback is possible.
Field-complete, detail-incomplete: the broad fields pass, but a corner, ceiling line, stringer edge, return, or fixture area does not. Spray only the admitted fields; complete detail by a separately authorized method and access plan.
Access required: any field needs an improvised bridge, ladder on unequal treads, plank, box, bucket, rail lean, blind spray, one-hand reach, or uncontrolled full-extension posture. Select proper access equipment or a qualified contractor.
Complete the exact compatibility and control proof
With the system still stopped and depressurized, mount the exact gun to the selected QuickReach only by the current instructions. Verify every required connection, restraint, trigger control, hose relationship, tip guard, and pole adjustment by those instructions.
At low height over a protected area, repeat the complete dry motion. Reject visible movement, release, rotation, creep, hose pull, control delay, or any change in the pole’s set length. A quiet dry test is rejection evidence only; it does not create a load, pressure, or compatibility rating.
Then establish the authorized system setup from the pump, gun, tip, and coating instructions. This guide gives no values. Conduct the required pattern and coating proof on an authorized target at ordinary, fully visible height before raising the system into the stairwell. The pattern must be stable and suitable under the controlling instructions; spit, tails, pulsing, leakage, or an irregular fan stops escalation to reach work.
Plan the section order before pressurizing
Draw the exact production route. Work from the highest admitted section toward the lower sections so later work does not require carrying a live head above finished wet coating. Break the walls at natural geometry—corners, returns, trim breaks, landings, or other planned boundaries—rather than inventing a stop in the middle of a broad visible field.
Within each section, plan passes that keep the fan square to the wall and let the fresh edge be met while it remains workable under the coating instructions. A diagonal stringer changes the boundary, not the spray fundamentals. It is also not standard-ceiling work, which uses the shorter 28670 and ordinary room geometry.
Finish-critical edges are not automatically pole work. Mask them under the site plan or reserve them for a separately authorized detail method. The QuickReach role here is controlled wall-field coverage.
Spray the admitted wall fields
This qualitative Tier-1 method begins only after every prior gate passes.
Clear and read back the station. Confirm the exclusion at both entries, authorized ventilation state, dry footing, visible tread edges, clear hose, protected lowering path, and no person inside the sweep or fallout zone.
Plant before raising. Establish the same balanced stance that passed dry. Bring the pole up with two-hand control. Do not move the feet while the tip is live on a pass.
Set the fan square. Align the spray fan perpendicular to the actual wall plane. A raking fan loads the near side differently from the far side. If the geometry changes, stop the pass and reset from a controlled position.
Move before triggering, but trigger only on the target. Establish the intended straight travel while off, trigger only after the fan is aimed at the authorized paintable target surface, and release before the fan leaves it. Never test, clear, or feather into the open well, circulation path, ceiling, masking, or an adjacent surface.
Travel with the body, not a long arm sweep. Where the mapped station permits lateral travel, keep the pole in a controlled relationship to the body and let small, deliberate foot movement carry the straight pass.
Overlap under visual control. Lay each pass with controlled, consistent overlap into the prior wet pass. This guide supplies no percentage, speed, distance, or film thickness. Read the pattern and wet film as the coating and equipment instructions require.
Close one section coherently. Maintain the workable edge, finish the planned section, release the trigger, and lower the pole by the rehearsed route. Do not abandon an open field to fix masking, answer traffic, drag hose, or change stance.
Read back frequently. After the first pass, each position change, each interruption, and whenever light or pattern changes, inspect the wet edge, overlap, coverage, overspray, masking, hose, mount, and pole control. View the wall from more than one authorized station when glare hides the result.
Depressurize to reposition when control is in doubt. If the next section asks for more lean, more swing, a blind turn, a hose pull, or a questionable tread, stop, lower, and follow the system’s pressure-relief procedure before changing the plan. Repositioning is never solved by overreach.
Non-negotiable stop conditions
Loss of control or bounce: the tip lags, oscillates, changes distance, or cannot stop where intended. Release, lower, depressurize as required, shorten the pole or change the authorized station. If the map no longer closes, hand the section to the access lane.
Spit, pulsing, tails, or unstable fan: stop spraying. Lower and resolve the pump, filter, tip, coating, or setup under their instructions. Do not correct an equipment fault at reach.
Leak: release, isolate the zone, and execute pressure relief. Never feel for or block a leak with a hand, rag, glove, or body part.
Injection: any suspected high-pressure fluid penetration is an immediate medical emergency, even when the wound looks like a pinhole. Stop the job, seek emergency treatment, state “high-pressure injection injury,” identify the injected fluid, and provide its safety data. Graco directs users to read and follow the equipment manuals and their injection, fire/explosion, and toxicity warnings (Graco — Airless Sprayer Safety).
Poor visibility: fog, glare, shadow, angle, mask movement, or fatigue prevents a clear read of the target, wet film, footing, hose, or sweep. More light or a different authorized method is required.
Coating failure: crawling, lifting, wrinkling, poor adhesion, unexpected bleeding, solvent attack, or other incompatibility appears. Stop at the section boundary and return to substrate/coating diagnosis.
Overspray breach or ventilation change: fog escapes containment, deposits beyond the target, enters an unauthorized opening, or the authorized ventilation condition changes. Stop, isolate, and correct through the site and coating plan.
Electrical, public, or egress breach: a circuit condition changes, a fixture enters the sweep, a barrier opens, someone enters, or the alternate route fails.

Cleanup and return to service
Close the final admitted section, release the trigger, lower the pole, and follow the exact system pressure-relief procedure before disassembly, tip work, mount work, or cleanup. Flush the pump, hose, gun, tip, and other fluid-path components only with the cleaner and sequence authorized by their instructions and the coating system. The QuickReach claim says paint does not pass through the anodized-aluminum pole; clean external overspray and the mount only by the authorized method. Do not improvise solvent, soaking, lubrication, compressed air, or disassembly.
Inspect both poles if both were used. Any movement, damage, contamination in a connection, control change, or failure to hold the dry setting removes that pole from service pending resolution. Store only in the condition and manner its current instructions authorize.
Keep the stair excluded through the coating’s stated dry and service conditions. Remove masking in the authorized order without dropping debris or transferring wet coating to treads, rails, or adjacent rooms. Restore fixtures and electrical service only through the qualified/site process. Verify alarms, HVAC, doors, rails, lighting, controls, and the alternate route have returned to their approved state.
Walk the entire stair under normal lighting before release. Confirm every tread and nosing is dry, clean, visible, and free of hose, tape, masking, tools, coating, and trip edges. Inspect walls from the lower floor, each landing, and the upper floor for coverage, overspray, runs, missed sections, and coating failure.
Exact selection and differentiation
Choose 28680 when its stopped dry map closes the section. Its exact advantage is the manufacturer’s 5.5'–8.5' range and up-to-16' paint-height claim, with less pole than the 28690 where that reach is sufficient.
Choose 28690 only when the 28680 cannot close the section and the longer pole passes every control gate. Its exact claim is 7.5'–12' for areas normally reached on a ladder; no total paintable height is asserted.
Choose neither when legitimate footing, visibility, hose routing, swing clearance, film readback, or two-hand control fails. The answer is authorized access, not an inferred reach figure.

History footnote — pressure moved the working end away from the hand
The reach pole is a consequence of the airless system’s architecture. Graco traces the first commercial airless sprayer to its 1958 Hydra-Spray: coating atomized by fluid pressure at a shaped tip rather than by compressed air in the gun (Graco — company history). Once atomization lived at the tip and the gun acted as a valve in the fluid path, the trade could move the gun or tip away from the operator and control it remotely. That made floor-based stairwell reach practical; it also put an injection-capable orifice at the far end of a long lever. The convenience and the emergency boundary are products of the same invention. The spray-poles line document carries the deeper sourced history.
