A custom shield translates a boundary into a removable negative shape. The trade value is obvious at an arch, stair stringer, irregular stone return, or curved wall: instead of forcing a straight blade to bridge the profile, the crew makes an edge that belongs to the profile.
Model 28100 has the key exact claim. Hyde describes a high-impact polystyrene clip that holds cardboard or other customer-supplied sheet good, permits custom shapes and sizes, uses a PivotNeck adjustable to any angle, includes an 18-inch Acme-threaded hardwood handle, and can be used with an extension pole. Those are capabilities, not sheet specifications or safe-reach values.
Model 28070 is an 18-inch hardwood replacement handle officially described as “for any spray shield or cardboard clip.” Its own exact claims do not name the thread form; do not upgrade the family inference into a 28070 specification.
Model 28600 is real and linked, but its facts record contains zero accepted claims. Do not print dimensions, pack count, material grade, corrugation, or exact fitment to 28100.
Decide whether a custom moving edge is appropriate
Trace the proposed boundary visually. Identify the surface to coat, the finish to protect, and the field beyond both. A custom shield is useful when the line repeats or can be held in a stable segment. It is poor when:
the profile changes continuously over the shield span;
the protected finish cannot tolerate contact;
deep texture lets spray pass behind the sheet;
the coating dissolves, saturates, or sheds the sheet;
wind or airflow turns the sheet into an unstable sail;
the holder cannot see and support the complete cut edge;
fixed masking or brush work creates a more reliable finish.
Do not confuse shape with containment. A perfectly cut arch shield does not cover the window field, floor, room, or downwind site.
Inspect and resolve the substrate
Document the actual geometry. Arches may not be symmetrical. Stair stringers may wander from tread to tread. Stone edges can change plane and depth. Radius walls may have local flats. Confirm whether the boundary is a paint line, joint, reveal, or repair edge.
Check for loose finish, failed sealant, open gaps, sharp projections, and fragile ornament. A sheet pressed against loose masonry or uncured coating can cause damage. Repair and preparation belong to the substrate and coating system.
Older coatings can contain lead. Follow applicable lead-safe requirements for scraping, sanding, cutting, or other disturbance. The cardboard is not lead containment.
Capture the shape without contaminating it
Choose a safe template method suited to the finish. Pattern paper, a series of measured offsets, a flexible curve, or removable low-risk material may be appropriate; adhesive, rubbing, and direct marking must be approved for the surface.
For an arch, establish centerline and spring points before tracing. For a stair stringer, record each tread/riser change rather than assuming repetition. For irregular stone, limit the template to a segment the holder can actually seat.
Mark orientation, paint side, protected side, start point, and any overlap tabs on the template. A correct shape installed backward is an incorrect shield.
Validate the template dry against the work. Look from the application side for gaps. Adjust the pattern rather than planning to force the final sheet into compliance.
Select customer-supplied sheet by job behavior
Hyde permits cardboard or another sheet good supplied by the customer. That does not make every box flap or plastic sheet suitable.
sufficient stiffness for the projected span;
a clean edge after cutting;
coating and cleaner compatibility;
resistance to tearing, delamination, and fiber shedding;
manageable weight in the clip;
safe disposal for absorbed coating;
enough flat stock inside the jaw for secure retention.
Cardboard can absorb waterborne coating and reduce free liquid at the edge, but absorption is not unlimited. Some coatings and solvents can weaken, saturate, or contaminate it. Do not use a generic claim that cardboard is “print-proof.” Prove the actual sheet and replace it before it deforms.
If using 28600, keep every attribute beyond its identity flagged. Its title cannot substitute for accepted facts. Verify the physical stock and exact 28100 fit before treating it as the clip’s consumable.
Transfer and cut at a controlled bench
Work on a stable cutting surface away from finished work. Transfer the validated template with orientation marks. Extend the pattern into a broad support area for the clip; a beautiful edge attached to a narrow weak neck will not survive handling.
Use a sharp, appropriate cutting tool and guarded technique. Keep hands out of the cut path. Make multiple controlled passes rather than forcing a dull blade. Support curves so the sheet does not tear ahead of the cut.
Dress loose fibers without rounding the line. Do not add tape at the working edge unless its coating compatibility, thickness, and adhesion are deliberately qualified; a tape ridge changes the profile.
Produce at least one spare when the shape took meaningful time to capture. Label pieces by location and orientation. A saturated arch segment cannot be recreated accurately from memory while the coating is open.
Fit the sheet to 28100
Inspect the 28100 clip, PivotNeck, handle, and contact surfaces. Remove contamination that would prevent secure retention through a known compatible method. Do not invent disassembly or adjustment.
Insert sufficient flat sheet stock into the clip. Align the cut edge with the handle and planned working direction. Retain it using the documented tool action; the available source does not provide jaw-force or insertion-depth numbers.
Pull-test gently at bench height in each planned orientation. Reject the setup if the sheet creeps, twists, tears at the jaw, or places excessive leverage on the clip.
Set the PivotNeck attitude at the bench. Although the source says it adjusts to any angle, there is no angle scale or torque value. Use the dry work position to establish geometry and do not adjust a loaded raised tool.
Treat 28070 as a recovery part
Use 28070 when the existing clip handle is missing or damaged and the clip itself remains sound. Confirm the problem: a loose or worn PivotNeck, cracked clip, or unreliable jaw is not repaired by a new handle.
The exact supported facts are an 18-inch hardwood replacement handle and fitment “for any spray shield or cardboard clip.” Thread form, installation torque, and service procedure are not separately verified for this SKU.
Present the handle square and engage it by hand using the known tool instructions. Do not wrench, glue, tape, drill, or cross-pin the connection. After assembly, perform the same dry retention and orientation checks as the original configuration.
No replacement handle is needed when the included 28100 handle is present and sound. The catalog graph includes 28070 because it can restore the system, not because every custom-shield job consumes one.
Build a full process witness
Fixed-mask the surrounding field. Establish coating and equipment controls. If spraying, use only manufacturer-qualified tip, pressure, grounding, PPE, ventilation, ignition, hose, and service practices. Never put a person in front of an airless tip.
Dry-seat the custom edge. The shape should contact with light, distributed pressure. If a gap remains, lower the tool and correct the pattern. Do not jam a cardboard curve into stone relief.
Make one representative pass. Keep the fan or brush on the coating side and within the protected span. Stop before the sheet edge ends. Lift directly away.

coating film beside the boundary;
overspray outside containment.
Approve the shape only after the inspection state required by the coating. Record how many placements the witness sheet tolerated as an observation, not a universal product count.
Work arches as indexed segments
An arch often exceeds the controllable sheet span. Divide it into labeled segments with overlap. Establish the crown and spring points so the segments cannot drift.
Seat the first segment, apply within its coverage, stop, lift, inspect, and lower. Replace or clean as the qualified sheet demands. Place the next segment over the prior stop and align it to the underlying geometry.
Do not slide around the curve. Sliding changes contact pressure, abrades the first finish, and can drag a loaded edge. Indexing uses more lifts but preserves the actual shape.
At the crown, gravity changes how coating runs on the sheet. Watch for a bead or saturated low point even when the rest of the edge remains firm.
Work stringers and stepped profiles
A stair stringer is a sequence of short horizontal and vertical conditions. Use a pattern segment that includes enough adjacent geometry to register securely. Do not assume every step is identical.
Re-stage footing and access before each group. The holder does not climb while carrying a wet extended shield. Fixed-protect treads, risers, rails, and flooring.
Inside corners in the pattern can tear. Use clean radii appropriate to the desired finish rather than leaving a weak knife point, unless the design genuinely requires and the sheet can sustain the sharp corner. Replace a segment at the first sign of cracking.
Work scribed stone and irregular profiles
Limit each stone pattern to a plane the sheet can contact. A two-dimensional cutout does not seal a three-dimensional recess. Look from the application side for channels into mortar joints.
Where the profile changes depth, use fixed masking, brush work, or smaller independently seated pieces. Do not fill an open mortar joint with the shield or coating.
Porous stone can show distant fog after drying. Inspect the field beyond the exact line. Use only substrate-approved repair methods if contamination occurs.
Swap by condition
Cardboard and other absorbent sheet stock eventually changes behavior. Replace the piece when:
the edge becomes soft, swollen, fuzzy, or curled;
absorbed coating reaches the protected face;
the sheet creeps in the clip;
a color change would carry contamination;
a tear begins at the jaw or an inside corner;
the shape no longer returns to full contact.
Prepare a protected landing station and waste route. A wet sheet should not cross finished work or drip during removal. Follow coating-specific fire, solvent, and waste controls.
Do not promise a number of placements per sheet. Coating, film build, humidity, sheet construction, edge length, and crew technique all change the result.
Inspect and preserve the pattern
Keep the original clean template separate from used shields. If the job repeats, record location, orientation, revision, and known fit. Do not treat a paint-swollen used piece as the master.
Inspect the completed boundary under raking and normal light. Classify any failure as template error, contact gap, sheet change, placement joint, edge transfer, application-film defect, or field-containment escape.
Follow the coating and substrate makers for repair and release. Clean the 28100 without unverified soaking. Inspect the clip, neck, and handle.
Hand off a repeatable custom-profile kit
Package the clean master separately from working blanks.
For mirrored arches or paired stringers, verify whether the second feature is truly mirrored before flipping the template. Construction variation can make two apparently identical openings different at the paint line. Label each verified face rather than relying on symmetry.
If the pattern will be used on another day, recheck the substrate and sheet stock before production. Repairs, movement, humidity, or a different carton can change fit. The kit saves layout work; it does not waive a new dry seat and coating witness.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
The custom edge is accurate on the bench but reversed at the work. Orientation was not marked. Recut from the master and label paint/protected faces.
Leakage follows stone joints. A two-dimensional sheet bridges depth. Use smaller seats, fixed masking, or a different applicator.
The sheet shape shifts after several passes. Retention or saturation changed. Lower, replace, and requalify; do not tighten by improvisation.
Fibers appear in the finish. The working edge is deteriorating or incompatible. Stop, correct under coating instructions, and use qualified stock.
A straight paint print appears despite cardboard. Absorption was exceeded or the protected face became contaminated. Replace earlier.
28070 installs but the angle still slips. The handle was not the failed component. Remove the system from service and address the clip/PivotNeck through authorized support.
The arch drifts at segment joints. Index from fixed crown/spring marks and overlap the preceding stop.
The cutout becomes a sail outdoors or under exhaust. Stop. Reduce sheet area, control airflow, fixed-mask, or postpone.
The history footnote
Cut sheet held against a paint boundary is older than the manufactured clip: tradespeople have long shaped available material to protect curves and profiles. The 28100 turns that improvisation into a handled, angle-adjustable system. The records do not establish a date for that product transition, and the 28600 record supports no numeric history or specification.
