Score-and-snap does not cut through the sheet. It builds a controlled stress concentrator and asks the sheet to fracture there.

Identify the material exactly

Confirm from label/purchase record:

acrylic/PMMA product;

cast/extruded or other manufacturer category;

surface/coating/tint;

internal stress/formed condition;

approved fabrication methods;

required edge/finish.

Do not treat clear polycarbonate, PETG, polystyrene, PVC, unknown glazing, laminated sheet, or tempered/laminated glass as acrylic because it looks clear.

official scope including sheet plastic, acrylics, laminated fiberglass, thin copper, and aluminum.

The record does not establish:

blade dimensions/material/hardness;

Decide if score-and-break is appropriate

Use only when the sheet maker/method permits it and the cut is:

accessible to a rigid guide;

sized so both keeper/waste can be controlled;

not near a hole/notch/crack;

compatible with the surface finish/masking.

Use a saw/router/CNC/fabricator approved for:

very narrow strips;

thick/laminated/formed/stressed sheet outside scoring guidance;

finish-critical machined/polished edges;

geometry whose fracture cannot be supported.

The store’s tool does not prove sheet eligibility.

Inspect the sheet before layout

Under raking light check:

scratches/crazing/cracks;

warped/formed zones;

stress around drilled holes;

trapped grit under masking;

Do not score through an existing crack or damage and assume the new groove will arrest it.

Preserve masking film if the sheet instructions allow; remove only enough to mark/guide/cut without trapping grit.

Inspect the 45730

edge symmetry/continuity;

chips/bend/corrosion;

secure blade/edge;

clean double-bevel form;

The tool should remove a consistent chip/groove on matching scrap. If it scratches without cutting, tears one groove wall, wanders, or requires dangerous force, stop.

No Hyde sharpening/replacement method is accepted. Quarantine damage or use a qualified maintenance/replacement route.

Prepare a clean fully supported table

Remove grit/fasteners/tools. Cover only with a clean firm layer that will not flex, imprint, or let the sheet rock.

Support the entire keeper. Support the waste until the planned break.

no trip/reach hazard;

protected landing/control for waste;

Do not score a large sheet bridging sawhorses unless its approved method/fixture fully controls deflection.

Lay out the keeper

Reference a verified factory edge/datum only when square/true enough.

tool/guide offset determined physically;

downstream edge allowance;

any protected coating/feature.

Check both ends and intermediate points. A straightedge can be straight and still be clamped to the wrong marks.

Never place a permanent mark on a visible keeper face unless approved.

Prove guide offset on matching scrap

The double-bevel cutter has a physical relationship between its body/edge and straightedge. No offset is accepted.

clamp the same guide;

make controlled full-length score passes;

break through the sheet’s approved method;

measure the keeper;

inspect edge/surface.

Adjust layout—not wrist angle—to correct offset.

Use the same sheet type/thickness/masking and similar cut orientation.

Clamp the straightedge

Use a guide tall/rigid enough to resist sideways tool force without the cutter climbing it.

guide cannot shift;

clamps do not bow sheet;

keeper is protected;

no hand must hold guide near the edge;

full stroke starts/finishes beyond the sheet edge as method permits.

Do not freehand an important score.

Recheck marks after clamping.

Make the first pass lightly

Seat the cutter against the guide and draw from edge to edge in the approved direction.

The first pass establishes the track. It should:

remain in contact with guide;

create a continuous shallow chip/groove;

not jump at start/end;

avoid levering sideways;

keep hands out of pull path.

Do not force a deep first gouge; that can chip a wall or steer the tool.

Inspect the track before repeating.

Deepen with complete consistent passes

Return the tool to the same groove and make additional full-length passes under consistent alignment.

Count only as a local process aid. Neither Hyde nor this guide supplies a universal number/depth.

After passes, check:

groove continuous at both edges;

no second parallel track;

no wall chipping;

chips cleared safely;

effort remains controlled.

Do not use short back-and-forth sawing strokes. They can deepen unevenly and create stop marks.

Stop using the tool before breaking

The sheet method determines when the groove is adequate. Use a matching witness, manufacturer guidance, or controlled local standard.

Stop and choose another method if:

groove will not form cleanly;

tool repeatedly jumps;

sheet flexes under score;

cracks/crazing begin;

required force rises dangerously;

guide cannot stay fixed;

the sheet/process disallows hand breaking.

Never deepen until almost through merely because the break feels uncertain.

Clear chips without scratching

The scoring action removes small curls/chips.

Use approved vacuum/wipe/brush methods without dragging hard debris over the acrylic or blowing it toward eyes.

Do not brush with a bare hand along the groove; both chips and groove edges can be sharp.

Keep chips out from under the sheet before changing support.

Avoid solvent/cleaner incompatible with acrylic/coatings.

Prepare the break

Remove/relocate clamps/guide without shifting or scratching the sheet.

Align the score exactly at the approved straight break edge/fixture.

Support/retain the keeper close to the line using a batten/clamps or method approved for the sheet. Control the waste so it cannot fall, twist, or strike anyone.

The scored face orientation during breaking comes from the sheet fabricator’s method; do not assume universally.

Do not let the break edge bow.

Make one controlled fracture

Wear eye protection and protect sharp edges.

Apply even decisive force along the waste through the approved method, close to the line, while the keeper remains flat/controlled.

twisting one corner first;

repeated small flexes unless the sheet method explicitly uses them;

knee/foot breaking;

unsupported long waste;

face/body over the fracture.

If it does not initiate/propagate correctly, stop. Do not escalate to impact.

Control flying/sharp hazards

Acrylic fracture can create sharp edges/chips.

Use eye protection under OSHA’s eye and face standard for flying-particle exposure.

Select hand protection for sharp sheet edges while retaining control under OSHA’s hand-protection standard.

Keep bystanders out of the break zone. Do not catch falling waste.

Inspect the broken edge

Before dressing, inspect:

fracture followed groove;

chips/crescent breaks;

surface/coating damage;

edge square enough for downstream method;

keeper/waste identity.

Hold/reject through project criteria. Do not hide a crack by polishing.

Record unsuccessful witness/results to revise method selection.

Dress only through the acrylic method

Edge deburring, scraping, sanding, filing, routing, polishing, flame treatment, bonding preparation, and annealing are separate operations with material-specific controls.

The 45730 facts establish none.

Protect surface, control dust/heat, and use the sheet maker/fabricator’s procedure.

Do not flame-polish unknown acrylic/coatings or an edge carrying unresolved stress.

Handle narrow strips honestly

A narrow waste/keeper may not develop the leverage or uniform support needed to fracture cleanly.

Do not reduce support until the strip whips off.

For narrow or finish-critical strips, use a qualified saw/router/fabricator. There is no minimum strip width accepted for score-and-break.

If layout can place the narrow section on waste rather than keeper, decide before scoring.

Handle large sheets safely

Large acrylic can be heavy, flexible, scratch-prone, and difficult to control.

Use enough people/mechanical support, but keep hands out of fracture/edge zones. Plan sheet rotation before exposing the scoring tool.

Never carry large sheet with a fresh broken edge unprotected through a crowded area.

Store/transport per sheet instructions.

Record repeatable work

exact sheet/type/thickness as project fact;

condition/temperature as required;

local pass/depth control;

break setup/orientation;

Diagnose the fracture before touching the edge

The break face is the report card for the whole setup.

With both pieces supported, inspect under raking light:

whether the fracture stayed on the score;

whether either face chipped;

whether a crack ran ahead of the visible groove;

whether the edge is square enough for the project;

whether the keeper bowed, twisted, or gained a stress mark;

whether protective film tore material from the edge;

whether the final portion hinged rather than fractured cleanly.

Do not immediately file, flame, polish, scrape, or sand away the evidence.

A wandering break can come from unsuitable acrylic type/condition, a poor groove, guide movement, uneven support, excessive overhang, local damage, or asymmetric loading. The visual defect alone does not identify which.

Compare the broken witness to the approved scrap result. The 45730 record supplies no edge class or secondary-finishing acceptance.

Treat holes, notches, and inside corners as another method

Score-and-break is naturally a straight, through-edge method.

An interior opening has no free waste edge to release. An L-cut creates an inside corner where stress can run beyond the intended line. A curve asks a brittle fracture to follow changing direction.

Do not extend this guide to those shapes by scoring harder.

Use the acrylic fabricator’s specified drilling, sawing, routing, corner-radius, support, cooling, and finishing route. This catalog guide does not supply that equipment or its values.

If a project combines a long straight score-and-break leg with a machined feature:

establish which operation comes first under the acrylic method;

preserve the required corner/feature geometry;

support the sheet for each operation;

protect the finished face;

inspect for stress cracks after both;

reject any improvised corner breakout.

Never use the 45730 as a drill, piercer, pry tool, or corner chisel.

Manage protective film and finished faces

Protective masking can preserve a face, but it can also hide cracks, hold chips against the sheet, interfere with marking, or lift at the scored edge.

Follow the sheet maker’s instruction for whether masking stays on during scoring and breaking. Do not assume paper and plastic films behave alike.

Mark the film rather than the acrylic only when the layout remains accurate and the marker/adhesive is compatible.

Before the break, confirm that:

the film has not bridged the groove;

trapped chips cannot scratch the keeper;

clamps have not embossed the face through the film;

the guide remains on the intended side;

the face orientation matches the proven witness.

After separation, peel or trim masking only through the manufacturer-approved method. Do not drag the 45730 sideways along a display face to sever stubborn film.

For a finished edge that will be bonded or solvent-welded, keep fingerprints, oil, incompatible cleaners, and loose particles away and transfer the part to the specified preparation process.

Never declare a break acceptable solely because the covered top surface looks straight.

For repeated pieces, retain a labeled approved witness showing the acceptable face, break, and edge. Compare production pieces under the same light and orientation. Replace the witness when sheet product, thickness, protective film, storage condition, tool condition, or break setup changes; do not let a scratched old sample quietly lower the standard.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

Unknown clear plastic is assumed acrylic. Stop and identify it.

One heavy gouge chips the groove. Revert to light full-length witness passes.

Two parallel tracks appear. Stop; restore guide/tool contact or scrap the piece per criteria.

The straightedge shifts. Re-layout/reclamp; do not freehand back onto line.

The sheet cracks before break. Stop and use another method/disposition.

The waste is twisted down at one corner. Restore uniform support/force.

A narrow strip refuses to snap. Use a qualified machine/fabricator.

Scoring chips scratch the face. Clean without dragging.

A run-off crack is polished away. Hold; finishing cannot restore integrity.
