Repair Cracks and Holes in Plaster and Stucco
The registered fabric is claimed for both substrates and for curved or uneven surfaces, but no exterior-exposure, wet-area, or chemistry claim is invented.

Plaster and stucco are not interchangeable names for a rough wall. Interior plaster is a layered finish attached to lath or a solid base. Stucco is an exterior or interior cementitious finish whose assembly manages weather and moisture. Both can curve, texture, and wander in ways a rigid flat patch will not follow.
Wet & Set is claimed for drywall, plaster, stucco, and painted wood; it is designed for flat, curved, or uneven surfaces. That makes it a legitimate conformable bridge. It does not make every cracked plaster or stucco surface patchable.
Classify the material and assembly
Identify whether the surface is:
traditional plaster over wood or metal lath;
veneer plaster over gypsum base;
plaster over masonry;
cement stucco, synthetic finish system, or another exterior cladding;
a painted repair whose underlying material is uncertain.
Look at exposed edges, plans, prior records, and responsible expert findings. Do not select cement, gypsum, lime, polymer, primer, or finish solely from appearance.
For exterior stucco, identify drainage plane, lath, control joints, flashings, sealants, penetrations, and finish system. A surface patch must not block designed movement or hide water entry.
Determine crack or hole class
A stable fine crack in attached material may be opened and filled. A localized Class 2 hole with sound perimeter can accept a bridge and compatible finish.
Stop and escalate when:
plaster sounds hollow or moves over a broad area;
lath or keys have failed;
stucco bulges, delaminates, or exposes corroded lath;
damage reaches framing, sheathing, or water-resistive layers;
cracks are displaced, widening, stair-stepped, or structural;
active water or salt movement is present;
the sound perimeter is smaller than the damage.
Fabric is not a replacement for reattaching plaster, rebuilding stucco layers, repairing flashing, or correcting structure.
Sound plaster before cutting
Use the approved sounding/inspection method. Compare the crack zone with known attached material. Mark hollow, drummy, flexing, or loose areas.
Do not drive a crack opener through material that can fall from the lath. Stabilization or removal may be required first.
At a hole, inspect the entire perimeter. A narrow ring of sound finish around a broad detached field is not adequate margin.
Investigate stucco moisture and movement
Trace staining, efflorescence, rust, biological growth, soft sheathing, failed sealant, and cracks from openings or control joints. Repair water sources and assembly details before surface finish.
Check the selected repair material’s exterior, freeze-thaw, vapor, alkalinity, cure, and coating compatibility.
Do not bridge a control joint or expansion joint with rigid material. Preserve intended movement with the specified joint system.
Resolve old-wall hazards
Older paint can contain lead, and wall patching compounds installed before the federal 1977 ban can contain asbestos; opening, scraping, cutting, and sanding can disturb those layers. EPA’s asbestos actions register records the CPSC patching-compound ban, while EPA’s lead-safe RRP steps set the federal starting point for covered pre-1978 painted-surface work.
Test and establish required containment, worker protection, occupant controls, cleaning, and disposal before disturbance. Exterior work also requires soil and neighboring-property containment.
Stop if hidden layers differ from the assessed material.
Choose 09910 or 09911
Use 09910’s 5 × 15-inch flat sheet for one localized hole, short crack, curved return, or small uneven repair.
Use 09911’s 5-inch × 9-foot contractor roll for repeated patches or a continuous long strip. Width remains five inches; length does not make it suitable for damage that lacks sound side margin.
Both are fabric patches cut with scissors, dipped in water, and spread over damage. Both harden within minutes, are ready for a finish coat within 20–30 minutes, and are intended for flat, curved, or uneven surfaces.
No chemistry is claimed. Describe the setting behavior only.
Assign the crack tools honestly
Model 45400 is a 6-inch carbon-steel crack opener with hardwood handle and plated ferrule, claimed to clean and open cracks for patching. Its claim does not name masonry.
Model 45450 is a plated-steel crack patcher claimed for drywall, masonry, and plaster, with pointed and flat-bell ends. Its dimensions are unverified.
On plaster, the pair can open, pack, and iron a sound crack. On stucco or masonry, use 45400 only where soft material yields safely to a drawn carbon edge. Sound cementitious crack chasing belongs to appropriate masonry tools.
Prepare a plaster crack
Follow the crack with controlled drawn passes using 45400. Remove loose finish and create a channel into sound material suitable for the chosen filler. Do not pry against lath or widen attached plaster unnecessarily.
Vacuum under the hazard controls. If opening reveals hollow base coat, broken keys, corrosion, or continuing movement, stop and reclassify.
Pack compatible repair material into the channel with the 45450 pointed end as Tier-1 technique. Iron with the flat bell. Observe the filler’s depth, suction, set, and layering rules.
Prepare a stucco crack
Determine whether the crack is in finish coat only, passes through base layers, or follows a joint. Repair depth and material must match the assembly specification.
Remove loose material with the appropriate approved tool. Do not assume 45400 can cut sound stucco. Use 45450 for packing and leveling only where its claimed masonry/plaster scope and the repair geometry fit.
Clean without saturating the wall or forcing water behind the cladding. Condition or dampen only as the repair material instructs.
Prepare a hole perimeter
Remove unsound edges back to attached material. Shape the perimeter only as required by the repair system. Do not undercut behind fragile plaster or sever sound lath.
For stucco, assess exposed mesh/lath, corrosion, sheathing, and weather barrier. Damage to those layers generally moves beyond a surface bridge.
Vacuum or brush dust. The conformable patch needs sound margin around the entire wound.
Build a profile template
For curves, bullnose, textured returns, or moulded plaster, make a paper or flexible template of the sound profile. Record orientation and transitions.
The fabric conforms while wet, but the final finish material and tooling must recreate the actual shape. A bridge alone does not reproduce sand float, lace, dash, trowel, or ornamental profile.
Prepare a mock-up where appearance consequence is high.
Cut dry with sound margin
Select sheet or roll and cut with scissors. Extend onto sound cleaned substrate on every side and beyond crack ends.
For a curve, cut a shape that can bed without uncontrolled pleats. Do not notch away so much side margin that the bond becomes intermittent.
Dry-position and mark lightly through an approved method. Keep the remaining water-activated stock dry.
Activate and bed
Follow the exact Wet & Set instructions. Dip the cut fabric in clean water and spread over the prepared damage.
On a curve, bed from the centerline outward while preserving the profile. On texture, establish full contact without crushing sound adjacent finish. At edges, chase air and excess water outward.
Use a tool that will not tear or drag the fabric. Stop if the piece wrinkles, lifts, or cannot follow a three-dimensional change.
Leave the set undisturbed
The fabric hardens within minutes. Once positioned, stop working it. Protect from rain, direct sun, freezing, wind, or rapid drying according to the complete repair system.
Confirm the patch has reached its specified state. The 20–30-minute finish-coat claim is a supported window, not permission to ignore site conditions or the overlay material.
Use compatible plaster or repair material under the manufacturer and preservation specification. Deep loss may need base and finish layers rather than one thick coat.
Feather onto sound material without creating a wide hard ridge. Match curve using the template and appropriate straightedges or moulds. Let each layer cure/dry as required.
Do not apply gypsum material in an exterior exposure simply because Wet & Set is claimed for stucco. The overlay must belong to the environment.
Apply compatible base/finish repair materials in the specified layers. Match thickness and texture without blocking drainage or joints.
Blend texture on a witness first. Color and aggregate can vary even when pattern matches. Some stucco repairs require coating an architectural field for visual uniformity.
Protect cure from weather under the material instructions. Do not paint before alkalinity, moisture, and cure conditions permit.
Feather a flat plaster repair
For flat interior plaster, skim beyond the bridge in widening passes. Scrape ridges after set and sand minimally with dust controls.
Use raking light. A conformable patch avoids the rigid plate’s shape problem, but any surface-mounted bridge can ghost if feathered too narrowly.
Prime the full porous repair before finish paint. Match sheen and texture.
Inspect through the cure
trapped moisture or staining;
ghosting in side light;
Exterior inspection should continue after weather exposure under the project’s warranty/maintenance process. A surface that looks sound on day one can reveal unresolved water after rain.
Document the assembly repair
Record substrate identification, hazard results, moisture cause, crack/hole class, exact fabric model, cut size as a job record, overlay materials, weather, cure, texture method, and areas routed to larger repair.
Do not convert job measurements into product specs. Photograph hidden layers before covering where permitted.
Separate structural continuity from visual continuity
A sound repair and an invisible repair are related but different deliverables. Structural continuity means the remaining substrate is attached, the cause is controlled, the compatible repair layers are bonded, and designed movement or drainage still functions. Visual continuity means plane, texture, color, gloss, and weathering read as one field.
Test them separately. Sound or probe only under the approved method after cure; inspect edges and the surrounding assembly for movement or moisture. Then view the surface from ordinary approach paths and under grazing light. On stucco, compare texture after the repair has dried and again after the specified coating or cure interval. Wet material routinely appears darker and sharper than the mature finish.
Do not grind a technically sound patch thin merely to chase an immediate color illusion. Conversely, do not accept a beautiful texture over hollow plaster or a wet wall. If a broad finish coat is needed to unify appearance, that is a finish-scope decision, not evidence that the bridge failed.
Manage exterior exposure as an open qualification
The accepted Wet & Set evidence supports stucco as a substrate. It does not establish rain exposure, immersion, freeze-thaw resistance, vapor behavior, UV resistance, or compatibility with every cementitious or synthetic finish. The complete exterior repair therefore belongs to a specified system whose layers—including any bridge—are approved for the exposure.
Before exterior use, obtain the applicable manufacturer instructions and project specification. Record where the fabric sits in the assembly, what covers it, and how water is kept from entering behind the repair. Protect unfinished work from weather. If no authoritative system accepts the proposed build-up, do not infer approval from the word “stucco”; choose a verified exterior repair method.
This boundary is especially important at sills, parapets, penetrations, grade lines, and horizontal surfaces. Those locations can hold water and punish a surface patch even when a sheltered vertical witness looked successful.
Plan return inspections around the cause
For interior plaster, revisit after ordinary building movement or seasonal conditioning where the contract permits. For exterior stucco, inspect after appropriate cure and after representative weather. Look for a returning line beyond the fabric, edge lift, staining, efflorescence, hollow sound, rust bleed, or a sealant/joint failure adjacent to the repair.
If appearance alone changes while the assembly remains sound, route the work to texture or coating correction. If moisture, movement, corrosion, or delamination returns, stop cosmetic escalation and reopen the cause investigation. Adding another bridge over a failed bridge creates a thicker symptom, not a deeper repair.
Close the record with the observation date and conditions. “Looked good when installed” is not equivalent to “performed through the condition that caused the damage.”
What goes wrong (and the fix)
Plaster moves or sounds hollow around the crack. Stop surface patching; attachment must be resolved.
Stucco staining returns through the repair. Water entry or salts remain. Diagnose the assembly before recoating.
Fabric lifts on dusty old plaster. Preparation/contact failed. Do not bury the edge; remove or correct under instructions.
A curved patch wrinkles. The cut shape or bedding path cannot follow the profile. Re-template and use controlled relief cuts only if the system permits.
Texture looks right wet but wrong dry. Mock-up and cure comparison were insufficient.
45400 dulls immediately on hard stucco. It is outside the honest assist scope. Use the correct masonry tool.
A control joint is bridged. Remove the rigid repair and restore the designed movement system.
The repair survives indoors but fails outdoors. Substrate scope was mistaken for exterior rating. Use an exterior-qualified complete system.
Old-wall dust is created without assessment. Stop and invoke lead/asbestos controls.
