How to Patch and Blend a Damaged Drywall Corner

This is not one universal corner repair. Inside, outside, and off-angle corners are different geometries; cosmetic finish loss and failed reinforcement are different failures. The guide branches before any material is removed.

Job: repair a localized ding, gouge, chip, crack, or failed finish at a drywall corner, then blend both affected faces so the repair ends on sound flat wall rather than as a lump at the angle.

Starting condition: the leak, impact, fastener, or movement that caused the damage has been identified; the surrounding panel and framing are dry and stable; the affected assembly may legally and technically be repaired with the selected system; and any reinforcement that will remain is sound. If any of those statements is unproved, the first job is diagnosis, not compound.

Time: the hands-on repair is divided among diagnosis, removal, preparation, restoration, coating, correction, texture, priming, and painting. Elapsed time belongs to the current instructions for the exact patch, tape or reinforcement, compound, sealer, primer, texture, and coating system. This guide supplies no universal working time, set time, dry time, recoat window, coat thickness, or number of visits.

Difficulty: intermediate when the failure is cosmetic and the core is sound; advanced or trade-specific when board, framing, reinforcement, moisture control, a rated assembly, or an unknown proprietary corner system has failed.

The union is an exact geometry set, not a five-item repair kit. A single repair normally selects one branch: 05560, 09410, or 09411 for a standard inside corner; 09158 for inside-corner wipe-down and for off-angle inside geometry; or 09425 for an outside-corner finish repair. None of the five removes failed material, places repair compound, fills a deep void, cuts replacement board, supplies backing, replaces tape or reinforcement, feathers the final flats by itself, sands, textures, primes, or paints.

Everything else: drop protection and containment; bright movable work light; pencil; straightedge suited to the scale of the repair; clean stiff removal tool; utility knife only where the selected repair system permits cutting; clean brush or vacuum method approved for the surface; repair tape, reinforcement, backing, board, fasteners, patch, or compound selected for the actual substrate and failure; clean pan and mixing equipment if required; system-approved flat finishing knives; abrasive or damp-correction method approved by the material maker; texture material and application method matched by test; primer or sealer required by torn paper, stain, compound, texture, and topcoat; finish paint; clean water only where a current label permits it; and the protective equipment required by the product safety data sheets and site hazard plan.

Diagnose before touching the corner

1.1 Name the geometry

Stand back far enough to see both faces and the line where they meet.

Inside corner: the line recedes from the room. A normal wall-to-wall corner is usually the standard, square-ish branch. A vault, cathedral ceiling, bay, rake soffit, or splayed return may be an off-angle inside corner.

Outside corner: the line projects into the room. The visible nose may be built over metal, vinyl, paper-faced, composite, or another reinforcement system, or may be part of a proprietary detail. Do not identify the hidden component by habit.

Three-plane pocket: two walls and a ceiling, soffit, or return converge. None of the five union tools finishes that pocket as a single stroke; separate short-tool work is required.

Bullnose, chamfered, radius, reveal, expansion, movement, control, or decorative profile: outside this guide unless the exact component maker supplies a compatible repair method. A folded tool for a sharp corner must not be forced onto a different profile.

Do not use a tape measure or a guessed degree figure to turn uncertain geometry into certainty. They are not universal job angles, tolerance bands, or permission to force a tool until both wings happen to touch.

1.2 Separate cosmetic damage from system failure

Use raking light from both faces, then inspect with clean fingertips and gentle pressure.

Cosmetic or finish-layer damage can stay in this guide when all of the following are true:

the surrounding drywall face is hard, dry, and fixed;

the corner line does not move when lightly pressed;

the damage is limited to paint, texture, joint compound, or a short tape edge that the selected repair system permits you to restore;

outside-corner reinforcement, if present, is straight, fixed, and not crushed, sprung, corroded, or detached;

there is sound material beyond the damaged field on both faces;

no active stain, softness, odor, mold growth, heat damage, impact opening, or recurring crack suggests a continuing cause.

Reinforcement or substrate failure leaves this cosmetic lane. Stop when any of these appears:

board flexes, crumbles, delaminates deeply, has lost backing, or is broken through;

a panel edge or fastener moves;

the crack opens under light pressure, crosses repeatedly through prior repairs, or returns with seasons or building movement;

corner tape is loose beyond a small bounded repair, or the crease has detached from the angle;

an outside-corner nose is bent, flattened, sprung, loose, rusting, or separated from either face;

framing, blocking, backing, a control joint, or a movement accommodation may be wrong;

water, condensation, plumbing, roof, envelope, or mold conditions remain active;

the detail may be fire-, smoke-, sound-, shaft-, impact-, moisture-, abuse-, or otherwise rated and the approved repair is unknown;

the profile or reinforcement cannot be identified;

the repair would require cutting utilities, corner guards, trim, wiring, piping, or other concealed work.

More compound is not reinforcement. A wider feather can hide a shallow transition; it cannot stabilize a moving board edge, straighten a crushed corner, substitute for missing backing, or restore an unverified rated assembly.

1.3 Find the cause

An impact chip with a sound core is a finish repair. A straight recurring crease crack after seasonal movement is a diagnostic clue. A swollen corner under a bathroom, roof, or window is a moisture problem. A detached outside nose after a hard hit may be a reinforcement replacement. Name the cause and correct it before rebuilding the appearance. The EPA's remodeling guidance likewise begins by correcting the underlying cause of a damaged surface.

Photograph the corner in front light and raking light before removal. If the surrounding wall is textured, make a close-up reference and note the scale, direction, density, and irregularity of the pattern. Removal destroys the best texture sample first.

Make the dust, coating, and PPE decision

2.1 Legacy coatings and unknown old repair materials

If the work disturbs paint in pre-1978 housing or a child-occupied facility, do not begin dry scraping or sanding as if the dust were ordinary. DIY status does not make lead dust harmless.

Old or unidentified patching material can raise a separate asbestos question. Federal 16 CFR Part 1304 is the historical prohibition on consumer patching compounds containing intentionally added respirable free-form asbestos. The regulation is not a field test. If the material's age or composition is uncertain and the plan would abrade or pulverize it, stop and obtain the appropriate survey, test, or qualified direction rather than using a calendar guess as clearance.

2.2 Current drywall dust is still a real exposure

Use the maker's engineering controls, ventilation, eye protection, clothing, glove, and respiratory-protection requirements. Respirators are not chosen by appearance: where one is required, selection, fit, use, and any occupational respiratory-protection program must be correct for the hazard.

Contain the immediate work, protect occupants and contents, and prevent dust from migrating through doors, returns, or foot traffic. Prefer removal and correction methods that create the least dust allowed by the system. Use source-capture sanding or another approved control where sanding is necessary. Do not dry sweep or blow dust with compressed air. Collect debris as it is made and clean the work area by the applicable lead, asbestos, compound, and site rules.

2.3 Protect the finish before it exists

Mask and cover enough area to catch chips and wet compound without pressing tape onto fragile paint. Remove or protect nearby corner guards, base, trim, fixtures, and flooring as the assembly permits. Do not bridge an active movement joint, sealant joint, reveal, or designed separation with compound because it resembles a crack.

Select the repair system before selecting a Hyde tool

The five Hyde tools shape wet compound at corner geometry. They do not decide what must exist beneath it.

Identify, from exposed evidence or project records:

panel type and condition;

paint and texture system;

whether the inside corner is paper tape, reinforced tape, flexible corner product, or another detail;

whether the outside corner uses metal, vinyl, paper-faced, composite, or another reinforcement;

the joint compound or patch category already present, if known;

any proprietary panel, corner, waterproofing, impact, or rated-assembly requirements;

the primer, sealer, texture, and topcoat that must follow.

Then use the current instructions for that system. Some shallow cosmetic losses can be cleaned and filled. Loose tape may require removal back to bonded tape and a compatible tape repair. A damaged outside-corner reinforcement may require a component section to be replaced and refastened before finishing. Torn drywall face paper may require a compatible sealer before a water-bearing coat. A stain may require diagnosis and a specified blocking primer. These are different systems, not optional variations of one filler recipe.

apply compound over dust, chalk, oil, soap, wax, active stain, damp paper, mold, or loose paint;

assume every compound can be layered at any depth or mixed with any amount of water;

use a surface patch as backing;

bridge a moving crack with a cosmetic coat;

bury a loose outside-corner nose and call it reinforced;

infer a universal repair from the five-tool union.

Remove only what has failed

4.1 Map the removal boundary

Mark the visible defect, then probe outward lightly. The removal boundary is where failed material ends and continuously bonded material begins—not an arbitrary rectangle and not the full wing width of a tool.

Use the clean stiff removal tool named by the repair plan. None of the five union tools is a scraper. Keep the working force controlled and directed into loose finish, not into sound face paper or hidden reinforcement. Lift chips and cracked ridges in small pieces. If cutting tape is permitted, cut only where the system requires it and support the cut so pulling the loose segment does not unzip sound tape farther down the corner.

On an outside corner, expose enough to determine whether the nose and both flanges or attachment zones remain straight and fixed. Stop immediately if the reinforcement lifts, flexes independently, shows deformation, or continues cracking beyond the cosmetic layer. On an inside corner, stop if tape peels without resistance, the crease shifts, or the panel edge opens.

4.2 Do not excavate a sound corner

The aim is a stable, tapered repair perimeter. Deep square trenches create unnecessary fill depth and hard shoulders. Preserve bonded reinforcement, sound face paper, and sound compound. Feather a jagged paint or compound edge only by a method permitted for the material and hazard condition. Do not sand through face paper or expose reinforcement merely to make the hole look symmetrical.

Keep suspect legacy debris separate as required; do not mix it into ordinary cleanup by convenience.

Prepare the repair field

5.1 Clean without polishing or soaking

Remove all loose dust with the approved brush or vacuum method. A corner traps dust along its crease and beneath the lip of every chip; inspect from both directions. The substrate should be clean enough that the repair bonds to the wall, not to a powder layer.

Do not flood torn paper, raw gypsum, wood, metal, or an unknown corner component. Do not solvent-wipe material that has no solvent compatibility. Where damaged paper, rust, staining, porosity, or another condition requires a sealer, conditioner, corrosion treatment, or primer, use the product and sequence specified for that substrate. “Prime first” and “compound first” are not universal answers.

5.2 Establish references

Before filling, hold a straightedge or other appropriate reference along each flat face and sight the corner line above and below the repair.

For an inside corner, preserve the established crease. For an outside corner, sight down the projecting nose from both ends. Mark the high, low, and sound reference zones on the flats. The goal is not to make the patch locally flat in isolation; it is to reconnect the surviving line and planes through the damaged area.

5.3 Dry-fit any replacement component

If the authorized repair requires tape, reinforcement, board, backing, or a patch, dry-fit and install it under its own current instructions before using a corner tool. Verify that it is fixed, aligned with the surviving corner, and accepted for the assembly. A finish tool must never be used as a clamp to force a misaligned component into place.

After installation, press-test again. Movement now means the repair has not reached finishing condition.

Place the selected material with the appropriate loading and filling tools. The union tools do not carry material to the wall. Fill deep permitted losses in the sequence and lift depth the material maker allows, bringing the body toward the surviving planes without burying the corner in one heavy application.

Keep these controls:

maintain the inside crease or outside nose as a reference rather than filling across it blindly;

extend each successive permitted coat only as far as needed to graduate into sound wall;

stop the wet body slightly shy of the final plane if the material shrinks or requires a later finish coat under its instructions;

clean squeeze-out from the sound boundary while workable;

do not repeatedly polish material after it has left its working condition;

do not use a folded tool to compact a cavity or force material behind loose tape or reinforcement.

Let every layer reach the condition its maker requires before the next operation. A surface skin, a color change, a clock, or “overnight” is not universal proof.

Standard inside-corner branch

Use this branch only when the repair is on a square-ish inside corner and its tape or authorized replacement system is sound.

7.1 Choose one inside-corner shaper

Choose 05560 for a short occasional repair where its 2-1/2" polypropylene wings keep the wet footprint narrow and hand-supplied conformity is useful. Do not promote “conforms to proper angle” into an off-angle claim; that territory is explicitly claimed by 09158.

Choose 09410 for the claimed 4" flexible stainless 103° working end and its lightweight offset nonslip MAXXGRIP® handle.

Choose 09411 for the same claimed 4" flexible stainless 103° working end with the documented traditional hardwood handle.

Buying all three does not improve one corner. Select the working width and handle that fit the repair and cadence.

7.2 Shape the wet corner

Load compatible material onto both repair faces with the proper flat tool. Set the selected inside-corner tool into the surviving crease above the repair so both wings contact sound reference surfaces. Enter the wet repair with easing pressure, travel through it in one controlled pull, then ease out onto sound corner below. The purpose is to carry the existing straight crease through the patch and meter both wet faces symmetrically.

With 09410 or 09411, let the documented preload seat the wings; added force can print heavy wing-edge rails. With 05560, centered hand pressure supplies conformity. In either case:

keep the handle on the angle's bisector;

keep the fold clean;

read the two squeeze-out ribbons for symmetry;

stop before a three-plane pocket or obstruction;

do not return over skinned material;

accept light wing-edge rails as an intermediate condition, not a final finish.

If one wing remains dry while the other floods, correct alignment, tool cleanliness, material condition, and repair-body geometry. Do not solve asymmetry by pressing harder.

7.3 Wipe, or hand off directly to finish

If the selected material system and workflow call for a wet wipe-down, the 09158 may make a light conforming pass on the fresh inside-corner repair. Wipe the rubber clean between strokes so collected compound is removed rather than redeposited.

If no wipe-down is called for, leave the shaped pass alone. Overworking a correct wet crease creates the defect the tool just removed.

After the coat reaches its required correction condition, remove only proud nibs or rails by the approved method. Feather each face outward with the selected flat finishing system, working away from the crease so the repair boundary dies on flat wall. A folded tool re-establishes corner geometry; the flat knives establish final plane.

Outside-corner branch

Use this branch only after the outside-corner core and any reinforcement are straight, fixed, compatible with the chosen repair, and approved to receive finish.

8.1 Hold the corner-bead uncertainty open

The 09425 is claimed for smooth, defined outside-corner joints in drywall taping and patching, with 4" flexible stainless wings at a claimed 83° that flex around 90° corners.

do not use this guide to select, install, align, crimp, fasten, replace, or approve bead;

do not represent the 09425 as a bead tool or a substitute for bead;

keep the claims-safe role at localized outside-corner finish shaping and patching after the core is sound.

8.2 Reconnect the nose through the patch

Place compatible repair material on both faces under the selected system. Enter softly, pull through the wet repair in one continuous movement, and ease off onto sound nose below.

Track the projecting line rather than favoring whichever wall is easier to see. Two even wing-edge ribbons indicate a centered pass. Keep material off the nose itself unless the repair system expressly requires it; the eye and fingertip judge that line first. A rounded mound at the nose is not reinforcement and is difficult to hide.

The 09425's pass should reconnect symmetry through the damaged span. It does not fill a crater, straighten a bent core, or hold loose reinforcement while material cures.

8.3 Finish the flats

Let the shaped coat reach its maker-defined correction condition. Remove proud rails by the permitted method, then feather each face outward with the proper flat finishing tools until the patch boundary disappears on sound wall. Read the nose with a fingertip from sound corner, through the repair, and back to sound corner. Any bump, flat spot, step, or side-to-side disagreement is still a repair defect.

The 09158 has no role here. It is an inside corner wipe-down tool and carries no convex claim.

Off-angle inside-corner branch

An off-angle inside corner is not a standard inside corner pushed harder. Fixed folded tools cannot seat on both faces when the geometry lies outside their intended square-corner work.

9.1 Restore the system by its own method

Place and embed the repair with the flat or component-specific tools that method requires. The 09158 does not embed tape or impose a crease, and this guide invents no universal off-angle tape method.

9.2 Use 09158 only in its claims-backed window

While compatible compound is workable, set the 09158 into the actual inside angle and let the lightweight rubber conform under light pressure. Draw long controlled strokes through the patch, cleaning the blade between passes. The goal is an even film and a continuous line, not maximum removal.

The catalog claim that the blade flexes to fit inside angles other than 90° makes 09158 the union's only off-angle member. Stop if the rubber cannot contact the repair consistently, the profile has a radius or reveal, or the component maker calls for another finisher.

After the material reaches correction condition, finish each adjoining plane by the approved one-plane method. Rubber wipe-down reduces wet excess; it does not replace dry readback, flat feathering, or texture work.

Dry correction and final feather

10.1 Read high and low separately

After the repair material reaches the condition required for correction, inspect under raking light from each face and from both directions along the corner. Use touch and the straightedge reference established before filling.

High: a nib, rail, shoulder, or nose buildup catches light and touch. Remove only the high by the system-approved scrape, sand, or damp method.

Low: a hollow, shrink line, pinhole field, exposed tape edge, or depression remains after highs are removed. Recoat; do not grind surrounding wall down to meet it.

Moving: a crack, tape wing, nose, or panel shifts under light pressure. The repair has failed its substrate or reinforcement gate.

Neither high nor low: the corner line is continuous, both faces graduate cleanly, and the patch perimeter no longer reads. Stop adding material.

Sanding is not the default proof of craftsmanship. Prefer a clean dry slice for isolated permitted nibs and source-captured, maker-approved abrasion only where a broader high requires it. Protect the corner line and surrounding face paper. If sanding exposes paper, reinforcement, or tape, stop removing and restore the surface under the system.

10.2 Feather beyond the damage, not beyond reason

The repair boundary should land on flat wall where a flat blade can taper it to nothing. Extend only enough to remove the visual shoulder. If the required feather grows beyond the available finishing system or begins to become a wall-leveling job, hand off to the appropriate broader finishing method. Owning five corner tools does not create a wider flat blade or authorize a skim coat.

At a three-plane pocket, trim return, or obstruction, finish each plane with short controlled strokes and system-appropriate detail tools. No member of the exact union erases three-plane geometry.

Match the texture before primer

A corner patch can be geometrically perfect and still announce itself because its texture is too smooth, too coarse, too regular, or pointed in the wrong direction.

11.1 Read the surviving pattern

Use the photographs and sound wall saved before removal.

smooth, stippled, rolled, brushed, sprayed, knocked-down, hand-applied, or another pattern;

density and blank space;

direction or tool marks;

whether the texture stops, wraps, or changes at the corner;

whether later paint buildup has softened the original profile.

Do not name a proprietary texture or formula from appearance alone.

11.2 Make a sample

Use the selected texture material and applicator on scrap or a test panel prepared through the same sealer/primer stage the material requires. Let the sample reach the comparison condition, then view it in the room's actual light. Texture commonly changes as it dries and again under primer and paint. Adjust the method on the sample, not on the repaired corner.

Carry the matched pattern across the repair and soften its boundary irregularly into the old field. A ruler-straight texture edge around a patch is as visible as an unfeathered compound edge. Protect the crease or outside nose from texture buildup unless the original finish demonstrably covers it that way.

None of the five Hyde tools is claimed as a texture applicator. The 09158's smoothing role does not become a texture role because it is rubber.

Primer and finish handoff

Choose primer or sealer from the actual conditions:

exposed or torn face paper;

raw gypsum or patch substrate;

stain or water-mark history after the source is corrected;

repaired metal or other reinforcement;

porosity difference between patch and wall;

required topcoat compatibility;

rated or proprietary assembly instructions.

There is no universal “one primer for every corner repair” in this guide. Primer equalizes or seals the surface as its maker specifies; it does not fill a low, straighten a nose, bond loose tape, or stop movement. Complete geometric and texture correction first unless the selected system expressly sequences a sealer earlier.

Before priming, perform the dry readback below. After primer reaches its required state, inspect again under the same light. Primer often reveals shoulders, pinholes, texture mismatch, and torn-paper fuzz that bare compound hid. Correct only by a compatible sequence; do not bury a revealed failure under finish paint.

Finish paint must follow the coating system's application and recoat instructions. A localized touch-up may flash because of sheen, color drift, application method, age, porosity, or light even when the repair is flat. Blend or repaint to the boundary the decoration plan requires; this guide supplies no universal touch-up promise.

The dry readback — prove the repair, do not admire it wet

Record the repair before primer:

Cause: what damaged the corner, and what corrected or ruled out that cause?

Geometry: standard inside, off-angle inside, outside, or a routed specialty profile?

Failure class: cosmetic finish, tape, reinforcement, substrate, movement, moisture, or unknown?

Hazards: what coating/material age and SDS checks were made, and what containment/PPE controls were used?

Tools: which one member or branch of the exact Hyde union was used, and for what pass?

Dry observation: does raking light from both faces reveal a rail, hollow, pinhole, texture edge, or broken line?

Touch observation: does a fingertip cross the repair without a step, lump, flat spot, or movement?

Post-primer observation: did primer expose any defect or porosity/texture mismatch?

Acceptance is finite:

corner and adjacent planes are dry and stable;

no active cause remains;

tape or reinforcement is sound and does not move;

inside crease or outside nose connects continuously through the repair;

no exposed tape, paper fuzz, pinhole field, ridge, hollow, or hard patch perimeter remains;

texture agrees at normal and raking views;

primer and finish may proceed under their own instructions.

If any item fails, classify it as high, low, moving, contaminated, mismatched, or unresolved and return to the matching step. Do not call a wet, unprimed repair complete.

What goes wrong — and the exact correction

The crack returns while the repair is drying. The corner is moving or the reinforcement/embedding layer is unsound. Remove no more until the substrate, fastening, framing, movement detail, or repair system is diagnosed.

The repaired area feels soft or cool. Moisture or incomplete material condition remains. Stop coating; identify the source and follow the material's readiness requirements.

A small chip becomes a long loose tape run. The failure was not cosmetic. Stop pulling. Define the bonded boundary and route to the authorized tape-repair method.

The outside nose flexes or clicks. Reinforcement is loose. Compound cannot fasten it. Escalate to the identified corner-component repair.

The outside nose is flat or crooked after impact. The core or reinforcement is deformed. The 09425 cannot straighten it; replace or repair the component before finishing.

The repair keeps cracking at the edge of a movement joint or reveal. The work bridged a designed separation. Remove the incompatible bridge and restore the specified joint detail.

The compound peels off in a clean skin. The substrate was dusty, glossy, contaminated, incompatible, or improperly conditioned. Remove failed material safely, identify the bond requirement, and prepare under the system.

Torn face paper bubbles under wet material. Stop adding water-bearing coats. Let the system reach its correction state and use the specified torn-paper sealer/repair sequence before recoating.

A stain returns. The source or stain-blocking sequence is unresolved. Compound is not a stain block; correct the cause and use the specified primer system.

The inside tool leaves one heavy rail and one dry face. The tool was tipped, the body fill is uneven, or a crumb contaminated a wing. Clean it, restore the body geometry, and keep the fold on the bisector. More pressure is not the fix.

Route the wet wipe/smoothing pass to 09158 or to the component-specific method.

09410 and 09411 are being treated as different blades. They have the same documented 4" flexible stainless 103° working end.

09158 rounds or wipes the repair too dry. Pressure is excessive or the blade is being used as a crease builder. Use light conformity for wet wipe-down only, cleaning collected material between strokes.

09158 is being used on an outside corner. Stop. It carries only inside-corner claims. The exact-union outside branch is 09425 after the core is sound.

09425 rides over a loose or unidentified bead. Stop.

The folded tool chatters. Material has skinned, the fold is dirty, pressure changed, or the pass stopped. Stop touching the material, clean the tool, and resume only by the repair material's permitted correction sequence.

A line scores the entire patch. A dried crumb, nick, or contamination is on the working edge. Clean and inspect the tool before correcting the coat.

The patch edge remains visible after sanding. Determine whether it is high, low, or only different in porosity/texture. Remove a high, fill a low, match texture, or correct the primer/paint system. Blind additional sanding can expose paper without solving any of them.

The corner is smooth but looks patched after paint. Recheck texture, primer coverage, sheen, color drift, and application method. A visual mismatch is not automatically a compound-depth problem.

Dust escaped the work area. Stop production, prevent further migration, and perform cleanup and clearance under the applicable lead, asbestos, SDS, and site rules. A shop vacuum and ordinary housekeeping are not universal clearance methods.

Decisive buyer tests

Does the corner, board, tape/reinforcement, or surrounding assembly move?

Yes or unknown → buy no finish tool yet. Diagnose and stabilize the system.

No; damage is a bounded finish repair → continue.

Is moisture, mold, an active stain, unknown legacy dust, or a rated/proprietary assembly in play?

No / correctly resolved → continue.

Which geometry is actually damaged?

Standard inside corner → 05560, 09410, or 09411 may shape the wet corner.

The history footnote — why corner repair became its own drywall skill

Corners made in wet plaster were formed as part of the plasterer's continuous surface. Paper-faced gypsum board changed the problem: panels arrived as sheets, so their seams, inside angles, and vulnerable projecting corners had to be joined and finished after fastening. The National Inventors Hall of Fame records Augustine Sackett's 1894 patent for an early gypsum-board system, and USG's history traces the later wallboard industry. Once sheet walls became ordinary, the corner became a repeatable component with two recurring repairs: restore the joint at a receding crease, or restore the armor and straight finish at a projecting nose.
