Flip and Extend a Double-End Blade

Plan the work.
This guide covers the 66360 BG391 double-end V-cut and the 67390 6520 / 67450 4502M double-end hook blades. No specific handle model is specified for these blades.
Job: Flip a matched double-ended blade end-for-end to bring the spare cutting edge into use, keep the original geometry, keep matching patterns together, and return it to work only when the assembly is secure.
Time: Five to fifteen minutes for a routine qualified change plus first-piece proof; longer for cleaning, damage investigation, or an unverified handle/blade pairing
Difficulty: Advanced — both ends can injure, handle seating is hidden and critical, and double-end blades require tool-specific flip, extension, sharpening, and blade-exposure steps
Everything else: matching handle and instructions; work instructions for the station; protected change tray; proper driver and retention tools; blade-pattern and end-use log; blade exposure gauge or local stop; task lighting or magnification; cut-resistant hand protection selected for the procedure; eye protection; rigid containers for new and used blades; cleaning system; representative scrap and first-piece acceptance
Double-ended blades provide inventory and changeover options, not two edges that can be handled casually.
Three states must remain visible:
which model/pattern is installed;
which end is working;
how the retained center and unused end sit inside the verified handle.
Read the three exact identities
The 66360 Double End V-Cut Trim Knife Blade BG391 is accepted at 5 × 3/8 × .049 inches.
The hook pair is:
67390 Double End Hook Blade Extension Blade 6520: 4 × 3/8 × .035 inches;
67450 Double End Hook Blade Extension Blade 4502M: 4 × 3/8 × .035 inches, with High-Speed Steel printed for the exact model.
High-Speed Steel is confirmed for 67450. For 67390, use the material information shown on its own product page or packaging.
Distinguish flipping from extending
Flip: remove and reverse the blade so the opposite working end is presented.
Extend: expose more of the same working end when edge maintenance or access requires more length.
These are different events with different records.
Service a dull or damaged edge before extending it. Flip it when performance calls for a fresh edge, not by count alone. Replace a pattern only with the specified match, not a dimensionally similar sibling.
Establish the trigger
Permissible triggers may include:
witness cut no longer meets acceptance;
rising force under unchanged work;
rounded interior cutting edge;
planned qualified interval;
controlled maintenance has consumed the permitted presented section;
damaged first end with confirmed sound second end;
Station changes need a clear layout plan.
Chipping, bending, cracking, corrosion, damaged retained center, unknown regrind, or handle damage can require whole-blade/assembly quarantine—not a flip.
No model has an accepted service interval. Use the local log and cut result.
Stop and isolate the work
Complete the part or place it visibly in hold. Park material and stop any feed/index motion.
If the blade is used at or near powered equipment, isolate hazardous energy under the site procedure before entering the hazard zone.
Never change a blade while:
a conveyor or roll can move;
a press cycles;
tensioned stock loads the hook;
a part covers the edge;
the assembly is held in midair;
another operator can restart the station.
Move the complete handle to the protected change tray when the process permits.
Verify model, handle, and installed state
Before loosening anything, record:
blade model/pattern;
working end A/B convention;
current gauge reading;
reason for change;
part/material/station;
observed edge condition.
Marking A/B is a local control, not a Hyde blade fact. Apply it only by an approved method that cannot damage the edge, blade, or traceability.
If model identity is lost, quarantine. Dimensions alone cannot separate 67390 from 67450, and steel/pattern are economically and technically meaningful.
Inspect the handle before release
cracked body or grip;
stripped/rounded fastener;
burr that can score the blade;
evidence of shimming;
exposed unused end.
Do not assume a 3/8-inch width statement proves the double-end geometry seats correctly.
Protect both ends during removal
Set the assembly flat in a tray that controls rolling and loose parts. Use the exact driver and loosening sequence.
Wear hand protection selected for cut/puncture exposure and the needed dexterity. OSHA’s hand-protection standard requires task-based selection.
Release retention while keeping hands off:
the presented V/hook;
the blade path as it withdraws;
the hidden spare end;
any burr on the retained section.
Withdraw using the approved gripping area/tool. Never catch a suddenly released blade.
Clean before judging
Remove adhesive, rubber, film, fiber, or process residue using a blade/handle-compatible method.
Contamination can imitate:
incorrect throat size;
Do not scrape the internal V/hook with an unidentified hard pick. Do not soak handle materials or use a chemical without compatibility and SDS controls.
Dry and illuminate both ends before inspection.
Inspect end one, center, and end two
For each working geometry look for:
uneven walls/bevel;
Inspect the retained center for set-screw dents, cracks, mushrooming, galling, and loss of flat seating.
A sound spare end does not rescue a cracked center. A chipped hook/V may be unsafe inside the handle even when it will be hidden.
Photograph/retain abnormal failures where the MRO system requires investigation.
Flip only when the spare end and retained section pass, the handle accepts the reversal, and the station procedure supports it.
Use an extension only when the same working end still fits the job and a specified reach limit is available. Reach is not a substitute for the right tool geometry.
The catalog’s “faster changeover to sharp blade” sentence belongs to a neighboring double-end model, not these three; the line transfers the concept with a flag.
Reverse without mixing orientation
For a flip:
confirm the selected spare end;
rotate end-for-end in the protected tray;
orient the cutting geometry to the approved station direction;
insert without forcing the hidden end;
verify the hidden sharp form is safely contained;
seat the blade square;
show the recommended tool selection;
engage all retainers through the handle procedure.
Do not rotate face-for-face if the pattern has a directional grind. Actual directionality is unverified; inspect physical geometry and controlled setup.
Never grind an end just to make it pass through a handle slot.
Extend by a reproducible control
No universal exposed length is accepted.
Use a physical gauge, stop block, or controlled mark to set the shortest working extension that:
exposes the working throat/notch;
clears the fixture/work;
leaves adequate retained length;
contains the opposite end;
prevents handle contact with the work;
limits flex/twist.
Record the gauge/result rather than an eyeballed description.
If required reach exceeds the qualified handle/blade system, choose another system. Do not expose more until it “gets there.”
Tighten through the actual handle procedure
Use the manufacturer/local controlled sequence and any specified torque. This guide supplies no value.
all required screws/retainers are present;
threads engage normally;
clamp surfaces seat;
blade remains centered/aligned;
no retainer bears on an inappropriate sharpened surface;
The angle stays fixed during tightening.
Witness marks may show movement later but do not prove retention now.
Perform a safe retention check
With the edge pointed into a controlled safe zone:
apply the approved pull/twist check;
verify no movement;
confirm unused end containment;
ensure the handle has no new damage;
place the assembly in its guarded rest.
Do not test by pulling the hook against a glove, bench edge, or live material.
If retention changes after initial loading, stop and quarantine rather than tightening repeatedly.
Prove on representative scrap
Use the same material/state and cut species:
BG391 V-cut: qualified proud protrusion/flash witness;
6520/4502M hook: qualified sheet/strand witness entering the throat.
The first cut after flip/extension is a setup proof. Do not return directly to high-value production.
Run first-piece approval
After scrap proof, run the station’s controlled first piece and inspect the complete feature.

A flip can change subtle geometry even between nominally identical ends. First-piece review is not optional because the part is unchanged.
Control edge maintenance
No accepted source specifies honing angle, abrasive, allowable stock removal, or how far either internal V/hook may be renewed.
Use a qualified maintenance process matched to the physical interior geometry.
flatten a hook on a bench stone;
widen a V unevenly;
overheat 67450’s HSS;
assume 67390 is HSS;
grind a damaged end until the center becomes the working section;
extend past the locally qualified retained length.
Plan tool needs as maintenance requirements change.
Manage partial-life blades without losing end history
exact model/pattern;
end A condition;
end B condition;
which end was last working;
maintenance already performed;
approved next station, if any.
Use packaging or a rigid holder that separates both geometries and keeps the record physically associated. Do not write “one side good” on loose tape and throw the blade into a drawer.
Never transfer a partially used blade to a different material/station merely to consume it unless the receiving process explicitly qualifies the pattern, handle seating, condition, and contamination history. Adhesive, rubber, film, chemical, or hard inclusions from the first station may compromise the second.
When inventory is counted, distinguish new blades from controlled partials and spent/quarantined blades. Do not convert ends into stock arithmetic unless each end state is actually recorded.
Review recurring one-end failures. If end A consistently chips while end B wears normally, investigate orientation, insertion damage, handle contact, station direction, and local maintenance rather than assuming manufacturing inconsistency.
Store and dispose by condition
Keep exact models/patterns separated and labeled. Protect both ends, including a dull end that can still cut.
Spent blades go directly into the site’s selected rigid sharps route. Do not:
return a used blade loose to a new-stock box;
tape sharp ends;
mix 6520 and 4502M because dimensions match;
count “one used end” as a safe blade.
No disposal-container specification is a Hyde claim.
Audit the station log
blade model/pattern;
end A/B history;
Use the log to distinguish abrasion from chipping, blade creep from dulling, and process change from edge change.
Audit change tools as well as blades. A worn driver, wrong bit, contaminated thread, or damaged setting gauge can cause repeat slippage on otherwise sound blades. Keep the correct driver and gauge assigned to the station, inspect them on the maintenance schedule, and pull any tool that cams out or no longer locates repeatably. Use the proper driver and gauge setting instead of extra hand torque or an improvised reference mark. Correct the setup first.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
The blade flips unexpectedly during loosening. Use a controlled tray/gripping method and review retention release.
67390 and 67450 are mixed. Restore model/pattern segregation; identical dimensions do not erase steel/code.
The blade creeps after first cut. Stop and quarantine the assembly.
Set depth using the old witness mark only. Verify actual seating with the controlled gauge.
A hook is flipped face-for-face without checking grind. Restore the qualified orientation.
An improvised shim is added. Remove it and verify the correct handle/blade system.
A flipped blade goes directly to production. Run scrap and first-piece proof.
Two used ends are returned to stock. Move the blade to the controlled spent route.
The history footnote
Double-ended blades turn one piece of steel into two station changeovers, a long-standing mill-blade economy. The specific faster-changeover sentence in the Hyde catalog belongs to a neighboring model, so its transfer here remains flagged; no inventor or first date is claimed for these three patterns.
