Result: one recorded disposition—CONTINUE · CLEAN/RECHECK · FLIP/ROTATE · FILE ROUTE · REPLACE · HOST SERVICE · FITMENT HOLD—followed, where service is authorized, by correct reinstallation, a low-consequence witness pass, and a post-pass retention readback.

Time: condition-driven. Unknown residue, identity, damage, looseness, mismatch, or missing host instructions ends the routine lane rather than starting a guessed repair.

Difficulty: judgment first. Never file carbide or unidentified material, rotate a damaged body, install a plausible mismatch, or treat a failed holder as a dull blade.

Start with the exact design—not with “steel versus carbide”

The decision tree works only after identity is closed. Record the blade model from its package, controlled inventory record, or another reliable chain to the blade in hand. Record the host model independently. Photograph the complete scraper, the blade as installed, every readable marking, the presented edge, and the retention area before cleaning or loosening anything.

Use manufacturer fitment as the admission gate:

10420 → 10400 molding scraper.

11100 → 10520 pull scraper.

11130 or 11135 → 10540 pull scraper.

11170 → 10610 carbide scraper.

11200 is a sharpening file with a material scope, not a blade and not a host-fit product.

Those statements do not widen. The 11130 store title’s 10280 mention is not an accepted fitment claim. The 11170 exact record names 10610; a sibling pack’s 09190 statement does not become an exact 11170 claim. The 10420 belongs to the 10400 system, not by resemblance to another contour holder.

If blade and host cannot be closed as an exact pair, issue FITMENT HOLD. Do not remove a blade merely to compare it, and do not file, drill, bend, grind, shim, reverse, or force a candidate until it appears to fit.

What each of the six records actually authorizes

This matrix separates documented edge inventory from documented maintenance.

In short: all five blades have a documented unused-edge route subject to exact host instructions. The 11200 is scoped to carbon-steel scraper blades, but supplies no exact-SKU filing recipe. The 11100 has a conditional parent-level resharpening lead; 10420, 11130, and 11135 remain unknown for filing; 11170 has no file branch.

Stop, secure, and preserve the symptom

End the scraping stroke as soon as cutting changes, the blade moves, or the work begins to show a repeated defect. Do not add pressure to “prove” dullness. Increased force can turn loading into a gouge, a loose blade into holder damage, a rolled edge into a bend, or a carbide defect into missing material.

Move the complete manual tool to a stable, well-lit bench. Keep it out of foot traffic and out of ready-tool stock. Control the exposed edge and place an edge-safe tray or rigid container within reach before any authorized removal. If the scraper is connected to extraction, incorporated into equipment, or exposed to another energy source, this hand-tool guide stops; use the exact equipment isolation procedure.

Record the last material; sudden or gradual decline; effort change; repeatable marks; hard contact; and any click, rock, creep, or position change. These observations direct inspection but do not prove a cause.

Preserve residue, movement marks, chips, missing fragments, corrosion, unusual seating, substituted parts, and prior alterations before cleaning. A wiped-away contact mark can erase the difference between edge wear and retention failure.

Inspect blade, seat, and retention as one system

Begin without touching the edge. Under good direct and raking light, examine the working line, the other documented edges, corners, broad faces, body, and retained area. Then inspect the holder, seat, and visible retention system as far as the exact host instruction permits.

Ask the questions in this order:

Is the blade and host identity proved? If no, fitment hold.

Is the blade clean enough to inspect? If no, contamination route.

Is the blade body sound? Crack, distortion, missing material, or retention-area damage overrides sharpness.

Is the observed problem limited to one working edge? A local edge condition may leave another documented edge available; a body defect does not.

Can the host seat and retain a blade correctly? Looseness, poor seating, damage, missing parts, or unexplained alteration is host service—not an edge-renewal decision.

Do not thumb-test sharpness, flex-test a suspected crack, scrape the seat with the blade, or remove corrosion abrasively to discover whether metal remains underneath. Inspection must not consume the evidence it is judging.

The condition-and-decision matrix

Use the matrix before opening the holder. A single blade can occupy more than one row; the most conservative applicable disposition controls.

Preserve evidence before cleaning. Use a documented unused edge before buying or filing, but never rotate a damaged body. Treat looseness as a holder problem until the load path passes.

Choose the service route

Route A — continue on the same edge

Use this route when contamination was the only cause or the original stop was a false alarm, and the edge, blade body, host, seating, and retention all pass. Return only after the approved cleanup is complete, no residue can transfer to the work, and the witness in Section 8 succeeds. Do not rotate for ceremony.

Route B — expose a documented unused edge

This is the first renewal route for the five blades. The host’s exact instruction owns release, orientation, seating, and retention.

Keep the blade’s history attached to the physical blade. For 10420, count three documented positions, not six presumed face-edge combinations. For 11170, the second edge is the final supported renewal; there is no file handoff after it.

Route C — qualified carbon-steel filing

Filing requires two separate proofs:

the exact blade, or exact identified blade/host assembly, is authoritatively within the carbon-steel maintenance population; and

The 11200 proves only its own scope and cut: carbon-steel scraper blades, double cut, general-purpose sharpening. It does not prove that 10420, 11130, or 11135 is carbon steel at exact-SKU grain, and it does not provide the missing procedure. The 10520 parent description makes 11100 a supported lead for resharpening, not a universal instruction that can be copied to the other blades.

If either proof is absent, record FILE ELIGIBILITY UNKNOWN and choose replacement or authoritative resolution. Do not invent an angle, preserve a rough edge by guess, name an abrasive sequence, count strokes, or transfer a knife, cabinet-scraper, or carbide ritual.

Route D — replacement

Replacement does not waive host inspection. A cracked, loose, corroded, contaminated, altered, or mismatched holder remains out of service after a fresh blade arrives. The 11200 never substitutes for a blade, and a replacement blade never repairs retention.

Before opening the holder, obtain instructions matching the host and observed configuration. They must supply enough information to control release, preserve or establish orientation, identify required retention parts, seat the blade, secure the assembly, and judge its final state.

At the stable bench, control the blade before retention changes. Keep released parts in as-found order. Remove the blade without prying or twisting. Inspect the seat before cleaning, then remove only residue by a method approved for that host. Stop for a damaged seat, altered part, missing component, corrosion that prevents inspection, or contamination that prevents full seating.

Install only the exact accepted blade or qualified edge. It must reach its instructed seat without hammering, bowing, drilling, filing the mounting interface, shimming, or using retention force to pull it home. Restore every required part under the exact procedure.

Witness the return and read it back

Complete the host’s allowed static retention check first. Do not pull on an exposed edge or invent a shake test. Confirm identity, instructed orientation, complete seating, even presentation, complete retention parts, and no unexplained gap, movement, or interference.

Then use representative scrap or another low-consequence witness allowed for the established scraper job. Make one short, controlled pass at the normal qualitative method for that host; do not increase force to make a weak edge or loose assembly pass.

Stop and inspect:

Did the blade remain in the same seated and retained position?

Did the edge cut continuously without a repeated scratch, corner track, chatter, steering, or abnormal drag?

Did residue transfer to the witness?

Did the holder click, move, loosen, or acquire a new witness mark?

Did the selected edge develop a chip, crack-like indication, roll, or other new defect?

Pass: the assembly remains unchanged and the edge gives an even, controlled result without new damage or contamination. Fail: preserve the post-test state and return to the matrix. Do not add force, tighten by instinct, rotate randomly, or cycle an unsupported filing attempt.

What goes wrong—and the correct recovery

“It is dull, so file it.” Dullness is a condition; file eligibility is a material-and-procedure decision. Use a documented unused edge first. Prove carbon-steel scope and the exact procedure before filing.

Do not double the inventory by counting faces.

“The 4-edge blade is steel because the family is.” The exact 11130/11135 rows do not state material. Keep the material flag and do not let 11200’s scope become proof of the subject.

“The 11100 parent says resharpenable, so the same method works on 11130.” No.

“Carbide can be sharpened somehow.” Physical possibility is not a Hyde procedure. The supported 11170 route is a sound second edge and then replacement.

“The edge is clean, but the scraper still chatters.” Diagnose seating, retention, mismatch, substrate, and damage. Cleanliness is not assembly acceptance.

“The blade is rusty but will clean up.” No corrosion limit or restoration process is held. Do not erase section loss or cracks to create an apparent pass.

“A new blade sits loose, so tighten more.” Stop. Verify model, seat, required parts, and exact securing instruction. Retention force is not a fitment tool.

“The witness cut worked, so the job is closed.” Reinspect after the pass. A cut result and a retention readback are separate gates.

It does not duplicate a fitment catalog, blade-change manual, edge-map procedure, carbide maintenance page, or scraping technique guide.

History footnote

Replaceable-edge scrapers turned maintenance into a choice among preserving a long-lived holder, exposing another working edge, restoring an eligible edge, and replacing a spent part. The held Hyde record makes that choice visible but does not establish when Hyde introduced these exact systems, who invented the architecture, or one maintenance tradition shared by every blade material and shape.
