Cut Thick Abrasive Stock—Rubber and Carpet Class—at a Hook-Blade Station

The three are unhandled hook mill blades used in a separately qualified station handle. No utility-hook blade, fixed flooring knife, V-cut blade, straight mill blade, handle, machine, or PPE item is added to the product backlink union.

The three exact SKU research packets contain no accepted exact-pattern application claim. This guide therefore teaches the class operation and exact-model selection boundaries without presenting rubber, carpeting, or any sub-material as a Hyde guarantee for a specific pattern.

No maximum material thickness, layer count, stack height, bend radius, cutting depth, pull force, speed, production rate, service interval, or edge-life figure is authorized. The cataloged blade dimensions below describe the blades, not the stock they can cut. The actual conditioned material must enter the actual hook, contact the interior bevel, and pass a controlled same-stock trial. If it does not, stop; never create “capacity” by force, excess exposure, levering, grinding the hook open, or assuming that a sibling has the same throat.

Hook passage, seating, engagement, retention, exposure, fastener torque, and wood-handle retention remain unpublished. Use only a blade/handle pair qualified by current Hyde evidence or the site’s controlled tool standard.

Job: sever eligible abrasive flexible stock at a controlled hook-blade station, including proved rubber-sheet, rubber-backed, carpet-backing, and comparable stock, while keeping the blade captured in the material and the operator outside the pull and release paths.

Result: the intended stock is severed on the approved line; the keep edge meets the job’s dimensional and finish criteria; backing, face, reinforcement, adjacent layers, support, and downstream bond surfaces remain acceptable; blade and handle pass post-cut inspection; and every hook, chip, fragment, and rejected piece is accounted for.

Time: there is no universal rate. A rate target that encourages added force, blind pulling, bypassed inspection, or running a rounded hook is a defective work instruction.

Difficulty: the pull is simple; material qualification and force control are not. Abrasive stock can wear the inside edge without visibly damaging the blade body. Rubber can stretch, close on the hook, or contaminate downstream bonding. Carpet can bunch, shed, hide staples, or lose loops. The operator must distinguish ordinary wear from chipping, binding, wrong fit, and an ineligible material.

It is the wider, longer, heavier-body member and screens to the 5/8" handle class. Its steel is unpublished.

The fact extraction assigns an HSS family claim, but the printed catalog row and store title do not.

HSS and pattern code are the documented differences; no hook radius, throat size, capacity, or exact fit difference is proved.

Everything else required by the job: the material manufacturer’s current cutting, conditioning, exposure, installation, bonding, and PPE instructions; the employer’s approved knife/handle standard; same-lot scrap in the same backing and conditioning state; a stable station and continuously supported cut zone; compatible marking and guiding method; engineered stops, clamps, or restraints kept outside the pull path; adequate lighting; inspection magnification where the edge program requires it; employer-selected hand, eye, body, and foot protection; any applicable SDS; edge-safe change tools; clean storage; and a rigid puncture-resistant sharps container.

Admit the material—or reject the hand-hook process

The six-part admission gate

The words *rubber*, *carpet*, *thick*, and *abrasive* identify a buying problem, not a capacity. Admit a production cut only when all six conditions pass:

The material is identified. Record the manufacturer, construction, backing or reinforcement, lot, conditioning state, and downstream process. Generic appearance does not reveal mineral fill, textile reinforcement, wire, adhesive, surface treatment, or hazardous legacy content.

The material’s instructions permit a knife cut. A hook blade does not override a specified shear, die, slitter, saw, hot knife, guarded machine, row cutter, or manufacturer-defined seam method.

An accessible edge or approved opening exists. A hook captures from an edge. It has no useful piercing point and may not be stabbed, bored, or levered into an intact field.

The actual stock seats in the actual throat. On same-stock scrap, the stock reaches the interior bevel while the hook back remains in the controlled orientation.

The work can be supported and restrained without a hand in the pull path. The keep side and waste side must remain controlled before, during, and after release.

The hazards and acceptance criteria are defined. The station knows what a clean edge, acceptable dimension, intact backing/face, uncontaminated bond surface, acceptable blade, and safe release look like.

If any condition fails, the material is not admitted. HSS does not make an oversized throat larger. A heavier blade body does not prove an exact hook opening. A second pass does not legalize an unsafe first setup.

Rubber and rubber-composite stock

Rubber-sheet candidates include identified gasket sheet, nonmetallic shim stock, rubber-backed roll goods, flexible sheet, and similar material that the manufacturer permits to be hand cut. The actual formulation matters:

soft material can stretch ahead of the hook and return to a short or wavy edge after release;

high-friction material can grip the blade faces or close on the throat;

mineral-filled and abrasive-backed material can round the interior bevel rapidly;

fabric-reinforced stock can leave uncut cords after the rubber separates;

wire-reinforced, steel-cord, or hard-inclusion stock is rejected unless an exact approved cutting process expressly covers it;

adhesive-faced, release-coated, or bond-critical stock can be ruined by an improvised lubricant or cleaner.

Do not oil, soap, solvent-wet, silicone, powder, or otherwise lubricate the cut unless the stock manufacturer and downstream process approve that chemistry. A lower pull force is not a successful cut if the gasket face, flooring seam, splice, adhesive bond, coating, or finished product is contaminated.

Carpet and carpet-class backed stock

The class statement supports carpeting at hook-blade altitude; it does not collapse all carpet into one method.

cut pile, loop pile, cut-and-loop, woven, needlepunch, pad, or another construction;

backing system, coating, reinforcement, and any manufacturer-required edge treatment;

whether the cut is a rough backing cut, a production blank, a finished seam edge, a pad cut, or a demolition cut;

pile direction, pattern repeat, keep side, waste side, and downstream seaming/installation method.

For rough or production cuts, work from the backing side where the controlled process permits it, protect the face from grit, and test that the hook severs the backing without shaving face yarn or starting a loop run. A clean rough cut is not automatically a seam-ready edge. Loop-pile, patterned, woven, and specialty goods may require row cutting, trace cutting, edge sealing, or another manufacturer-specified method.

Reject any path containing staples, tack strip, seam hardware, buried wire, metal reinforcement, hard grit, or unknown debris. A hook blade is not a carpet-demolition probe.

Unknown and legacy stock

Old flooring systems, carpet mastics, black cutback adhesive, industrial gasket sheet, insulation, and recovered plant stock can contain hazards that cannot be identified by sight. Stop for the site’s material-identification, exposure, and abatement decision before cutting. A low-dust hand pull does not prove asbestos, silica, chemical, fiber, or contamination safety.

States this guide rejects

Material that does not seat in the hook while the working geometry remains controlled.

Any cut requiring the blade to pierce the field, pry, gouge, scrape, or work sideways.

Wire, steel cord, staples, steel banding, hard mesh, glass, ceramic plate, or another hard inclusion not expressly covered by the qualified process.

Tensioned sheet, belt, carpet, roll, or web that can recoil, roll, fall, whip, or pull the operator into the blade path without engineered restraint.

A stack or fold whose exact layer behavior has not been qualified; no layer count is authorized.

Material whose conditioning, temperature, chemistry, or backing state differs materially from the approved sample.

A cut inside or on machinery before the machine-specific hazardous-energy controls are complete.

A task whose required volume or force exceeds the site’s ergonomic and knife-safety acceptance criteria.

Select the blade from the station and failure mode

67450: the first evaluation when abrasion is the recorded failure

The 67450 is the row’s only member with High-Speed Steel printed in its exact catalog entry. Evaluate it when all of the following are true:

the material and hook geometry already pass the admission and fit gates;

the approved standard-position hooks are wearing round too quickly on the actual stock;

the failure is progressive abrasive wear, not chips, cracks, hard inclusions, poor support, excess exposure, or handle movement; and

the station can run the 3/8" handle class under an exact qualified pairing.

HSS is an edge-wear selection, not a strength, fit, or capacity promise. It cannot cure a material that will not enter the hook, a blade that creeps in the handle, or a cut that needs a different process.

67390: the moderate-duty or pattern-locked 3/8" position

Select it where:

the plant standard or last accepted box names pattern 6520;

edge life on the actual stock meets the station’s requirement;

the HSS premium has no recorded operating benefit; or

a controlled comparison is being run against 67450.

Keep its steel conflict visible. The printed row does not label it HSS; the fact extraction does. This guide does not resolve that conflict by repetition. Never claim that 67390 and 67450 have different hook shapes, throats, or capacities; no source proves a third difference.

67240: the 5/8"-class, heavier-body station

Select it when:

the existing qualified station standard names BG448A;

the station’s qualified handle system is the 5/8" class;

a heavier mounted body or additional reach is a proved process need; and

the actual hook admits the actual stock.

Do not promise HSS wear, a second hook, an end-for-end flip, or a larger throat.

Width class is a screen, not compatibility

67390 and 67450, at 3/8" width, to the 3/8" handle class;

67240, at 5/8" width, to the 5/8" handle class.

That screen does not prove that a hook passes a slot, seats fully, engages the intended retention length, remains contained during a pull, or can be set to a particular exposure. The four flat-sided wood handles in the 3/8" class have specifically unresolved retention and hook-passage questions. Use the exact fitting/qualification process; never shim, tape, peen, stack blades, enlarge a slot, or substitute a visually similar handle.

When to leave the row

Use another approved process when the job needs a mid-field start, a finished carpet row/seam method, metal or wire cutting, precision die-cut repeatability, long production slitting, thermal sealing, a guarded/retracting edge, automated feed, or force/repetition beyond the approved hand station. “The hook can eventually get through” is not an acceptance criterion.

Build the cutting station around support and release

Support the complete cut

Use a stable surface that supports the keep side and waste side close to the line. Remove grit, staples, chips, screws, wire, adhesive lumps, and hard seams from the blade-back path. The hook’s back can protect the surface from its edge and still drag debris across it; “not cut” and “not marred” are separate acceptance gates.

The cutting line must be visible and reachable without leaning across it. A guide or straightedge must remain stable and outside the hook throat and handle path. Do not assume a metal straightedge is harmless: striking it can chip the hook. Where a guide is used, qualify its thickness, edge, restraint, and clearance with the exact setup.

Restrain without distorting

Rubber and textile stock must be held neutrally:

do not stretch rubber to make the cut feel easier;

do not pull carpet backing so hard that it bows or shifts the pile;

place clamps, stops, weights, or fixtures outside the full blade and follow-through envelope;

support a heavy roll or fold broadly so it cannot collapse, crease, or roll into the operator;

control the waste so it opens away from the hook instead of closing on it;

never assign a helper to hand-hold the stock in the projected pull path.

If the kerf closes on the blade, stop with the tool controlled, withdraw along the established cut, and correct support. Do not twist the hook sideways to spread the material.

Plan the pull and release zones

A hook severs in the direction of the pull, commonly toward the operator. Arrange the line so the hand and handle travel beside the torso and finish in open space. Keep the off hand, thigh, abdomen, knee, and face out of the pull and release paths. Stand out of the plane of a tensioned offcut. Never brace the stock against the body.

Plan what happens when resistance disappears. A clean cut can still fail safely if the waste drops, rolls, springs, or whips. Use a fixture, stop, support, or staged short section so release is predictable.

Control machinery before approaching it

If stock is on a roll, feed table, conveyor, cutting head, unwind, or another machine, do not treat a hand blade as permission to work near motion. Complete the machine-specific hazardous-energy procedure, including stored tension, gravity, pneumatic, hydraulic, and roll energy, before entering any danger zone.

Qualify the blade/handle assembly and same-stock sample

Receiving and pre-mount inspection

match the purchase order, box label, blade, pattern code, and station card;

verify 67240/BG448A, 67390/6520, or 67450/4502M exactly;

for 67450, verify the controlled purchasing record calls for High-Speed Steel;

inspect both faces, working hook or hooks, spine, mounting area, and ends under good light;

reject chips, cracks, bends, twist, corrosion at the edge, damaged mounting surfaces, unexplained grind marks, mixed pattern identity, or missing steel designation where the order requires it;

keep both hooks of a documented double-end blade controlled during handling.

Do not infer 67240’s end count from appearance alone for changeover arithmetic.

Mount only through the qualified procedure

Follow the current instructions or controlled site standard for the exact blade and handle. The procedure must define:

seating orientation and retention engagement;

which fasteners or mechanism are used and how condition is checked;

allowable working exposure by a proved setup, not a number invented here;

how the nonworking hook on 67390/67450 is contained;

post-mount retention inspection;

how a flip or replacement is performed without hand contact with an edge; and

how rejected and spent blades enter the sharps system.

Width match alone is not a mounting instruction.

Run the same-stock qualification coupon

Use a representative offcut from the actual lot, construction, backing, conditioning state, and reinforcement:

Mark the keep and waste sides and the real line geometry.

Set the same support, restraint, guide, handle, blade, exposure, and PPE planned for production.

Confirm the stock enters the actual throat without force or geometry distortion.

Make a short controlled pull with the body and off hand outside both travel and release paths.

Inspect the cut face, dimensions, backing, carpet face or rubber surface, support, blade, and handle.

Repeat under the site’s predetermined trial plan long enough to expose early wear or loading; this guide supplies no cut count.

Record pass/fail, force trend, cut quality, blade condition, retention, and any contamination.

A coupon pass proves only that exact configuration and acceptance plan.

Make the hooked cut

Start from an accessible edge

Bring the open throat over the material edge. Keep the blade back in its controlled relationship to the support and align the hook with the line. If there is no accessible edge, stop and route the job to an approved opening or cutting method. Do not stab or rock a hook into an intact field.

Capture, then draw

Seat the material into the throat with minimal force. Use a full, dry grip and aligned wrist. Draw in a smooth controlled motion so the interior bevel performs the cut. The hook should retain the material against the edge rather than skate across its surface.

Use only the force established by the qualified coupon. Do not add body weight, jerk the handle, saw rapidly, lever the blade sideways, or pull farther when the hook begins to bind. A sudden force increase is a stop signal.

Rubber-specific control

Keep the stock relaxed and fully supported. Watch the marked line at the point of cut rather than steering from the waste edge. Let the waste open without stretching the keep piece. If the rubber compresses, elongates, or snaps back to a distorted line, stop and correct support, sharpness, or process selection.

Adhesive or rubber residue can pack the hook and raise friction. Stop to inspect and clean through an approved material-compatible method. Do not scrape residue out with a finger or introduce an unapproved solvent or lubricant.

Carpet-specific control

Where the approved process calls for backing-up cutting, keep the backing visible and the pile protected on a clean support. Mark pile direction and preserve the downstream seam or finish allowance. Draw through the backing without driving the hook into face yarn or the surface below.

Stop if loops pull, face yarn shaves, backing ribs tear rather than sever, the pile begins to run, or the cut leaves the row required for the finished edge. Route seam-critical work to the carpet manufacturer’s method.

Long cuts

Work only within a balanced reach. Reposition the stock or body between sections rather than overreaching or pulling past the safe finish zone. Restart from the established edge/kerf with the hook controlled; do not plunge a new start into the field.

Stop conditions

Stop immediately when:

the stock will not seat or leaves the throat;

pull force rises or changes abruptly;

the blade back lifts or the hook turns down into the support;

the stock stretches, bunches, folds, or closes on the blade;

the cut wanders, chatters, tears, or delaminates;

fibers, reinforcement, wire, grit, staple, or another inclusion appears;

residue packs the hook;

blade, handle, or retention moves;

the edge chips, glints, rolls, or loses bite;

the release path is no longer clear; or

the process differs from the qualified coupon.

Hold the work safe, withdraw along the cut without side-load, and diagnose before continuing.

Inspect the cut, the station, and the tool

Product acceptance

Inspect against the job’s predetermined criteria:

line location and dimensional result;

smoothness or permitted texture of the cut face;

no unacceptable stretch, bevel, compression, tear, delamination, fray, loop damage, shaved pile, or backing separation;

no contamination of a gasket face, splice, adhesive surface, coating, or finished face;

reinforcement treated exactly as the material specification requires;

keep piece and waste disposition identified.

Do not accept a distorted rubber edge merely because it later relaxed near the line. Do not accept a carpet cut that looks clean from the back without inspecting the face and row behavior.

Station and support acceptance

Inspect the complete blade-back route and support for a score, dragged grit line, cut debris, puncture, damaged coating, opened pad, marked floor, or shifted fixture. A hook can keep its cutting edge away from the support and still mar it with trapped debris.

Blade and handle acceptance

Under safe light and without touching the edge:

no chip, crack, bend, twist, corrosion, packed residue, or missing fragment;

hook profile and interior edge remain continuous;

blade did not creep or rotate;

handle and retention mechanism remain intact;

nonworking hook on a double-end blade remains controlled;

pattern identity remains traceable.

If metal is missing, stop affected work, establish the last confirmed intact check, hold exposed product/material as the site requires, and execute the fragment-accountability procedure.

Read edge wear and choose the next action

Rounded versus chipped is the critical split

Progressive rounding presents as rising pull force, compression before separation, more fibers left attached, fuzzy or torn backing, and an interior edge that reflects light continuously rather than at one impact point. On admitted abrasive stock, this is the wear mode that can justify testing 67450 HSS at a qualified 3/8" station.

Chipping or local damage presents as a sudden snag, one repeating tear, an interrupted edge, missing crescent, point defect, or new line wander after contact with a hard inclusion. It indicates impact, hard debris, levering, side-load, excess exposure, retention failure, or unsuitable stock. HSS is not the remedy. Quarantine the blade, account for fragments, inspect the handle and work, and correct the cause.

Build a blade log rather than a legend

For each qualified material and station, record:

blade model and pattern;

controlled steel designation or unresolved status;

handle and qualification identifier;

material maker, construction, lot, and conditioning;

start/end or other site-defined usage interval;

cut-quality and force checks;

flip, renewal, replacement, rejection, and reason;

rounded, chipped, contaminated, corroded, loose, or other failure mode;

downtime and rejected product attributable to edge condition.

Compare 67390 and 67450 by acceptable cuts or operating intervals under the same controlled process, plus change labor, downtime, and scrap—not by price per blade or an invented life multiple. Re-run the comparison when the stock or process changes.

Double-end changeover

67390 and 67450 are documented double-end blades. Flip only through the separately qualified changeover procedure: isolate the station as required, control both edges, remove the blade, inspect both ends and mounting surfaces, turn end-for-end, reseat, secure, inspect retention, and pass a scrap cut before production.

Do not transfer that flip to 67240.

Sharpening and cleaning boundary

Use only a validated maintenance process; otherwise treat the blades as controlled consumables.

Clean through a chemistry compatible with blade, handle, stock, and downstream process. HSS is not a claim of stainless or chemical resistance. Dry the assembly and store it so no edge is exposed, trapped wet, or contacting another tool.

PPE and work-control program

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 requires assessment and selection of PPE; 29 CFR 1910.138 requires hand protection chosen for the task, conditions, duration, and identified cut, laceration, puncture, abrasion, chemical, and temperature hazards.

The assessment should address:

cut-resistant protection for the non-knife hand where it can be worn without creating grip, dexterity, or entanglement hazards;

eye protection where blade fragments, grit, released reinforcement, brittle backing, or sharpening debris can eject;

body, forearm, and leg exposure along the pull and release paths;

protective footwear where blades, rolls, fixtures, or heavy stock can fall;

knee protection and work rotation where carpet stock is handled at floor level;

chemical and skin protection for adhesives, cleaners, rubber compounds, coatings, or contaminated stock;

respiratory and exposure controls required by material instructions, SDS, or the site’s hazardous-material program;

ergonomic controls for repetitive force, grip, posture, and heavy roll handling;

lighting, non-slip footing, traffic exclusion, and sharps containment.

A glove is not cut-proof and never authorizes a hand in the pull path. If assigned PPE prevents a secure dry grip or interferes with the qualified handle, stop and correct the system.

Where the cut is associated with machinery, guarding and the machine-specific energy-control procedure remain primary. A long blade or handle is not a guard, and “only one quick cut” is not a lockout exception.

Never recover schedule by adding body weight, cutting toward the body, bypassing the coupon, running a damaged edge, or treating HSS as permission to ignore failure evidence.

Receiving test

Match order, model, pattern, box, and station card.

Segregate 67390/6520 from 67450/4502M; verify the HSS designation only where the order requires 67450.

Inspect blade profile, hook or hooks, mounting surfaces, spine, and corrosion condition.

Reject mixed identities, damage, missing traceability, or a substituted pattern.

Store every edge controlled and dry; no loose blades in a drawer, pocket, or open bin.

Process-approval test

The approval owner should require:

exact blade and handle qualification;

material identity and same-stock coupon;

line, finish, backing/face, reinforcement, support, and contamination acceptance criteria;

safe pull/release geometry;

predetermined edge and retention inspection points;

fragment accountability and sharps disposal;

operator demonstration under the actual setup;

an ergonomic and PPE assessment;

a change-control trigger for material, backing, blade, handle, exposure, guide, support, cleaning chemistry, or required rate.

A successful demonstration is evidence for that controlled process only. It does not turn into a public maximum-capacity statement.

History—the hook meets abrasive modern stock

The hook edge predates any model on this page. Its commercial logic follows sheet flooring: Frederick Walton patented linoleum in the early 1860s, and a floor covering that had to be severed without driving a point into the floor beneath gave the captured interior edge a durable trade role. No held primary source names a single inventor of the hook knife or a precise invention date for the shape; this guide does not create one.
