How to Cut and Remove Plastic Strapping and Banding Safely
Job: sever, remove, contain, and dispose of polypropylene or polyester package strapping without exposing a person to an uncontrolled blade, recoiling end, or shifting load.

It does not cover steel banding, wire-reinforced band, rigging, or any strap serving as a lifting or load-bearing member.
Time: the cut takes a moment; identification, load assessment, isolation, and end control are the job.
Difficulty: low only for a verified slack plastic offcut on a stable package; high enough to refuse when tension, reinforcement, load response, or either end is unknown.
Both are die-cast metal, self-retracting knives supplied with a heavy-duty round-tip blade.
The controlling idea: tension decides the tool before thickness does
Plastic band can look harmless because it is light, smooth, and not steel. That is the wrong first test. Packaging strap is manufactured to hold a bundle together under tension. The strap, compressed contents, shifted freight, springy dunnage, and the package's own shape can all store energy. When the loop is opened, one or both ends may sweep, the contents may spread, or the load may tilt.
A self-retracting knife controls one hazard: the exposed cutting edge. Releasing the button lets the blade return into the handle. It does not grip either cut end, remove tension from the loop, support the load, or choose the rebound path. Self-retraction and retained-end cutting are different safety functions.
That distinction is not theoretical. Signode describes a purpose-built cutter whose tensioned-strap mode holds the strap during cutting, isolates one end in serrated jaws, and leaves the operator to stand away from the one rebounding end. No held Hyde source assigns that function to 42062 or 42067.
Verified slack, non-load-bearing plastic strap: the Hyde pair may do the severing work described below.
Use the package system's authorized release procedure and a proper cutter rated for that exact strap and condition.
Any strap supporting, suspending, towing, hoisting, restraining, or stabilizing a load: stop.
Do not “test” tension by plucking the band, sliding fingers beneath it, making a small nick, or watching what the first band does. A diagnostic nick is already a damaged restraint.
Before the cut: prove what you have
Identify the band as nonmetal plastic
Use the supplier label, receiving record, strap specification, or packaging procedure. Common package straps include polypropylene and polyester/PET, but color, gloss, embossing, stiffness, and magnet response are not enough to certify identity. Some composite straps contain longitudinal reinforcement; some woven products contain high-strength fibers; some dirty plastic-looking bands conceal wire.
This guide accepts only a verified nonmetal plastic package strap within the site's procedure. If the material is steel, contains wire, has unknown reinforcement, or cannot be identified, quarantine the package and obtain the correct cutting method. Do not make a trial cut to discover the construction.
Plastic identity does not prove low energy. Material identification tells you which procedure to consult; it does not authorize a utility knife.
Determine what the strap is doing
Trace the entire loop. Look underneath the package, behind edge protectors, around corners, and through pallet openings.
whether the strap merely closes a stable carton or is unitizing multiple pieces;
whether the load can spread, roll, tip, telescope, spring open, or shed dunnage when the loop opens;
whether other straps are sharing restraint and whether sequence matters;
whether the strap crosses a machine, conveyor, lift, door, rack, or pinch point;
where both ends can travel after separation;
whether anyone is below, beside, or beyond the package in a possible fall or rebound path.
A strap that appears loose on top may be tight underneath. A loop around compressed cartons may still release expanding contents. Support and stabilize the package under the load owner's procedure before any band is removed.
If cutting the strap would allow any part of the package to move under gravity or stored energy, the Hyde knife lane is closed.
Isolate surrounding energy
Stop conveyors and other equipment that can carry the package, pull loose strap into a nip, or move while a person is positioned beside it. Where servicing or clearing exposes a person to unexpected startup or stored energy, follow the machine's energy-control procedure; OSHA's hazardous-energy rule requires potentially hazardous stored or residual energy to be relieved, restrained, or otherwise rendered safe and the isolation verified before work begins.
Do not reach into a strapping head, chute, turntable, baler, compactor, conveyor, or wrapping machine under this hand-cutting guide. Jam clearing and machine-fed strap belong to the machine-specific procedure. A stopped pushbutton is not energy isolation.
Establish the recoil plane and exclusion area
For a truly slack offcut, both ends should already lie in controlled space. If either end would leave that space when severed, treat the strap as energized. Move uninvolved people away from the complete loop and from the possible path of a falling band, edge protector, board, or package component.
Never stand in line with the strap, bend your face over it, straddle it, or place a hand on the far side of the proposed cut. Never ask another person to “just hold the end.” A hand is not a retaining jaw. Gloves and eye protection reduce consequences; they do not turn an uncontrolled release into an acceptable one.
Select PPE from the actual hazard assessment
OSHA requires the employer to assess the workplace and select PPE that protects against the hazards found. Plastic-band removal can present flying-end, cut, abrasion, pinch, and falling-object hazards. Eye protection with side protection is the baseline where a flying-object hazard exists; face protection may be added when the assessment calls for it. Hand protection must be selected for the actual cut and abrasion exposure, fit the wearer, and still allow reliable control of the knife.
Do not put the off hand into the cut or rebound path because it is gloved. Gloves do not replace energy isolation.
Inspect and function-check the knife away from the strap
Use good light. Confirm that:
the body is intact and free of cracks, deformation, heavy contamination, or missing parts;
the blade is correctly seated, clean, and free of chip, bend, corrosion, or visible damage;
the round tip and cutting edge match the approved knife setup;
the slider moves freely;
the blade extends only while the control is held and retracts fully and promptly when released.
Keep hands clear of the opening during the test. Never check sharpness on skin or a fingernail. If the blade hesitates, stays out, or the control has been taped, wedged, altered, or contaminated, quarantine the complete knife. “It retracts most of the time” is a failed safety mechanism.
Choose 42067 or 42062 — and refuse false power logic
Choose 42067 for the short, controlled cut
The 42067 is the 1/4"-exposure member. Use it where a verified slack, light plastic strap lies as one controlled layer and the short exposure can cross the stock cleanly. Less exposure keeps less edge in the work area. It is the first trial only on a loose representative piece or an already de-energized strap under the site's procedure.
If the 42067 cannot seat across the stock, starts a ragged partial cut, or needs repeated hard sawing, stop. Short reach is not a reason to add body force, twist the knife, or pull the strap toward the blade.
Choose 42062 only when slack stock actually requires more reach
The 42062 has 11/16" exposure. That is a reach difference, not a force, capacity, or tension rating. It may be the honest choice for verified slack thicker plastic stock or a permitted layered cross-section that the 42067 cannot traverse cleanly. It is not an escalation tool for a taut band, a mystery composite, a stack of several bands, or a restraint that resisted the first knife.
A wider-looking blade opening or longer exposure does not authorize the unknown cut.
The exact-union refusal
It does not silently add hook blades, fixed utility knives, snap-off knives, shears, or heritage mill knives. More importantly, the two listed knives do not make a complete tensioned-band release system.
Cutting a verified slack plastic strap
Begin only after material identity, load stability, zero-energy state, equipment isolation, end control, and tool selection are complete.
Remove the strap from the package first if the approved process allows it. The best knife cut is made on a loose length laid flat on a sacrificial cutting surface, away from product and people. If the strap cannot be made loose and controlled before severing, leave this procedure.
Control the work without putting a hand near the edge. Arrange the loose band so it cannot roll, spring into the aisle, or pull through the noncutting hand. Use the site's approved fixture or flat work surface. Do not wrap it around a hand, foot, knee, post, pallet jack, or body part.
Choose a straight, clean section. Do not cut through a buckle, seal, welded overlap, knot, edge protector, or contaminated patch. Hard inclusions and doubled joints change the cut and can deflect the blade. If no clean section is accessible without reaching into a hazard, stop.
Place the body out of the line of cut. Set feet for balance. Keep the knife hand, forearm, face, torso, and off hand out of the follow-through and away from both future ends. The cut should travel away from the body into clear controlled space.
Expose the blade only at the work. Hold the control, bring the round-tip edge squarely to the strap, and use a short, deliberate draw. Keep the knife aligned with the cut. Do not pry upward, twist, stab, or lever the body under the band.
Let the edge sever; do not manufacture force. A clean cut is one controlled motion or a small number of aligned strokes on accepted slack stock. If the blade skates, chatters, requires a clenched two-handed pull, or begins splitting the strap lengthwise instead of crossing it, stop and reassess identity, edge condition, exposure, and tool class.
Release the control immediately after the edge clears. Verify that the blade retracts fully before moving the knife, reaching for the offcut, or changing position. Self-retraction closes the edge after the cut; it does not retroactively control a band end.
Account for both ends before anyone enters the area. Confirm that no strip ran under a pallet, into a conveyor, around a caster, or across a walkway. A long loop is a trip, entanglement, and machine-ingestion hazard even after its tensile energy is gone.
If the strap is tensioned: the Hyde knives stop here
Do not slide 42062 or 42067 beneath a taut band. Do not pry up a gap with the knife nose. Do not place a second tool, scrap block, finger, or hand under the strap as a makeshift keeper. Do not tape the cut end to the package and call it retained.
Use a cutter authorized for the exact plastic strap and energy state. Where the system specifies a retained-end mode, seat and operate that cutter exactly as its maker directs, position the operator outside the remaining rebound path, and keep the exclusion area in force until both ends and the load are stable. The Signode GripPack CB is cited here only to document the engineering distinction between blade retraction and strap-end isolation; it is not a recommendation for every package, and none of its ratings or operating methods transfer to a Hyde knife.
If a tensioned strap has already been nicked, partially cut, heat-damaged, abraded, or split, do not resume the interrupted knife cut. Treat the restraint as unpredictably weakened. Isolate the area, support the load, and follow the damaged-strap recovery plan.
After the cut
Contain the strap immediately. Coil or fold only after it is fully slack and controlled, using the site's method; place it in a rigid or otherwise approved container so stiff ends cannot project into an aisle or waste handler's hands.
Remove the whole loop and every fragment. Check pallet feet, under-load gaps, conveyor edges, casters, dock plates, stairs, and drains. Never leave a plastic loop where it can catch a foot, wheel, or machine.
Do not reuse a cut or nicked restraint. Removed strap, partial segments, and strap with edge damage do not return to package-securing service. The remaining tensile capacity is not established by appearance.
Inspect the load. Confirm that cartons, parts, dunnage, and edge protectors remain stable before moving the package or releasing the barricade.
Inspect the knife. Look for edge rounding, chip, bent blade, body damage, contamination, slider drag, or incomplete retraction. Quarantine a failed tool; do not compensate with more force on the next band.
What goes wrong — and the correct recovery
“The band looked loose, then whipped when it parted.” Its energy state was misread or the package transferred load into it during the cut. Stop work, keep people out, assess injury and package movement, and escalate to the load-release procedure. Do not make the next cut with a tighter grip.
“Someone can hold the far end.” Refuse. Hands do not isolate stored energy and place a person in the exact path the procedure must clear. Use an engineered retained-end cutter authorized for the strap.
“The knife retracts, so it controls recoil.” It does not. Retraction encloses the blade. End retention requires a separate gripping function; neither Hyde model has one in the held evidence.
“The package moved after the first band.” Do not cut the second.
“The 42067 will not reach through.” Stop before sawing or twisting. On proved slack, nonreinforced plastic, reassess whether 42062's longer exposure is the correct controlled setup. On any tensioned, unknown, layered, or load-restraining band, route to the proper strap cutter.
“The 42062 still will not cut it.” More exposure did not solve material identity, reinforcement, edge condition, or tool-class mismatch. Quarantine the attempt and obtain the strap specification and approved cutter. Never progress to a pointed, fixed, or loose blade by improvisation.
“The blade skates along the glossy face.” The approach is not square, the stock is moving, or the edge is dull. Release and retract, control the slack stock on an approved surface, inspect the blade, and retry only after the cause is removed.
“The plastic turns white and splits lengthwise.” Stop. Oriented plastic can split along its length when nicked. Do not peel the split toward a hand or assume it is safely weakened; contain it under the damaged-strap procedure.
“The cut stalled at the welded overlap or seal.” Move to a clean single-layer section only if the entire strap is verified slack and the process permits it. Do not force a knife through a hard seal, buckle, or clip.
“The blade stayed out after I released the button.” Keep the tool pointed into clear space, set it down without touching the blade, isolate it, and remove the whole knife from service. Do not push the edge home with a finger or continue “for one last cut.”
“The blade chipped.” Stop and account for the fragment without searching by bare hand. A chip can indicate hard inclusion, twist, impact, excessive force, or the wrong stock. Quarantine knife, blade, and material; do not install a fresh blade and repeat before the cause is known.
“I nicked the strap and nothing happened.” Nothing happening is not proof of safety. The restraint is now damaged with unknown remaining capacity. Clear the area, support the load, and use the authorized recovery procedure.
“The band is plastic, but fibers are sticking out.” Stop. The construction may be woven, composite, glass-, aramid-, or wire-reinforced. Do not handle the fibers bare or make a second discovery cut; obtain material-specific PPE, cleanup, and cutting instructions.
“The offcut disappeared under the conveyor.” Do not reach after it. Stop and isolate the equipment under its energy-control procedure, then recover the strip with the authorized method.
Bundling layers hides material, multiplies released ends, and changes force. Follow the package's one-at-a-time or specified sequence with the correct cutter.
“Can I use this on steel banding too?” No. Its edge, cutting force, recoil, and cutter requirements belong to a separate procedure.
The history footnote — plastic changed the strap, not the stored-energy problem
Modern plastic packaging strap is a product of polymer extrusion and molecular orientation. A 1975-filed patent described polypropylene and polyamide straps as having become important in packaging during the preceding decade, then documented work on oriented polyester strap. A 1983-filed patent described extrusion and lengthwise stretching used to build polypropylene strap strength while controlling splitting and abrasion. These are historical anchors, not claims that either inventor created the first plastic strap.
The important continuity is older than either patent: a closed band turns applied tension into stored energy around a package. Plastic reduced weight and corrosion and changed elongation and split behavior, but it did not make release consequence disappear. The later engineering step was therefore not just a sharper edge; it was a cutter that could manage an end. Hyde's industrial-knife history belongs to the broader line document; it is not evidence that Hyde invented package banding or the retained-end cutter.
Patent dates mark documented development, not the first invention of plastic strap.
No accepted exact-model claim names polypropylene, polyester/PET, package strap, banding, or any other specific strap material for 42062 or 42067.
No held Hyde source rates either knife for tensioned-strap release. Self-retraction controls blade exposure only; it does not retain, isolate, or capture a strap end.
42062 is the exact 11/16" listed variant and 42067 the exact 1/4" listed variant. The family page's short-exposure body copy and alternate standard-blade figure must not overwrite those exact variant identities.
Each exact model is documented as including one heavy-duty round-tip blade. Replacement-blade compatibility, blade thickness, allowed alternate tips, installation method, discard interval, cleaner, and lubricant are not established here.
No universal PPE ensemble, glove material or cut rating, eye/face configuration, footwear, barrier, exclusion distance, load-support method, or release sequence is established for the exact union.
No visual field test reliably distinguishes polypropylene, PET, reinforced composite, or concealed wire across all package straps.
No load-bearing, lifting, hoisting, towing, suspension, fall-protection, cargo-restraint, rigging, or machine-clearing use is authorized. Those systems own their release and energy-control procedures.
Steel banding and any wire or metal reinforcement are outside this row with no exception.
No held source establishes one inventor or exact first date for plastic package strapping, the self-retracting safety-knife pattern, or Hyde models 42062/42067.
