Shears carry their own backing: one edge supports while the other passes it. That makes them valuable for material that cannot support a drawn knife.

Identify the exact sheet

material and reinforcement;

thickness/weight where supplied;

surface/coating/print;

grain/weave/direction;

pattern repeat/orientation;

Do not cut unidentified film or coated sheet whose chemistry/handling is unknown.

If the material contains glass/mineral fibers, metal mesh, hard laminate, wire, or abrasive fill, use its specified cutting system rather than trialing maintained decorating shears casually.

Decide whether shearing is the right cut species

Use shears when:

material can pass between blades;

two-edge closure will sever without crushing/delaminating;

the cut starts at an edge;

both sides can be supported/managed;

required radius fits the physical shears;

cut quality proves on scrap.

Use another method for:

rigid thick panel;

hard sheet metal;

interior cutout without approved starter;

long precision line better guided by machine/knife;

material that cracks, shatters, or welds behind the blades;

large stack beyond physical control;

contaminated/hazardous demolition.

“And more” is not a capacity.

Inspect the shears

blade alignment and overlap;

edge nicks/roll;

pivot/tension function;

full open/close clearance.

Close slowly on light to verify edges pass without impact/gap.

Quarantine blades that cross, bind, gap, or have a damaged precision tip.

Do not test sharpness on a finger.

Prepare a clean support

Clear grit, paste, staples, wire, blades, fasteners, and hard chips from the table.

Support the sheet so:

keep-side lies flat/relaxed;

waste can move without pulling;

pattern remains visible;

large sheet cannot slide/fall.

Never shear over a finished surface that the lower blade/tip can scratch.

Condition and relax material

Follow the material instruction for temperature, acclimation, unrolling, flattening, and handling.

Rolled vinyl/plastic can curl and steer. Fabric can skew off grain. Foil can retain creases.

Lay the sheet in its cutting state before marking. Do not stretch it flat and then cut a dimension it cannot retain.

Keep wet/pasted wallcovering relief work distinct from dry table cutting; wet material can elongate and contaminate the pivot.

Lay out from the keep-side

pattern/grain direction;

notches/relief limits;

visible/hidden edge.

Use marking media that will not bleed, scratch, transfer, or remain visible.

For patterned wallcovering/fabric/vinyl, align repeat and neighboring piece before cutting. A straight cut at the wrong motif is scrap.

Mark waste unmistakably.

Use a template for shaped cuts

match finished orientation;

include seam/trim allowance;

lie in the sheet plane;

show grain/pattern;

identify face/waste;

include start/stop/notch landmarks.

Secure without damaging the surface.

Do not wrap a flexible template around a curved object and then flatten it without accounting for the geometry/material method.

Tune adjustable tension on scrap

No numeric setting is accepted.

Use a representative offcut:

make a full-stroke test;

inspect whether material folds between blades;

feel for binding;

inspect edge for chew/scallop/fray;

adjust only through the physical tool procedure;

Tension too loose can separate blades and fold thin material. Too tight can bind, fatigue the hand, and accelerate wear.

Do not adjust the pivot with an improvised tool or while blades are open near hands.

Use the precision tip honestly

Hyde claims a precision tip for scoring materials to be cut.

verify the material permits it;

protect the backing/table;

use a straightedge/template safe for tip contact;

keep the tip shallow;

mark only the intended line;

witness on scrap.

Do not convert the tip into an awl, punch, pry, or sheet-metal scribe.

Scoring may help springy vinyl/plastic follow a line, but no exact method/depth is accepted.

Start the cut

Open enough to place material at the working intersection, not jammed at the hinge.

Align the cut line where the edges cross. Keep the waste side able to lift/curl away.

Make the first closure slowly to establish direction.

Do not chop with the last inch of tip unless the qualified shape requires a short detail cut. The long blades earn quality by using long controlled arcs.

Advance with full smooth strokes

Open wide enough for the next stroke while keeping the intersection near the end of the previous cut.

Feed sheet—not hands—toward the moving crossing point.

no blade twist;

no sheet stretching;

Short bites create scallops/jags. Do not close completely into finished material if the tips would leave a notch.

Control the offcut

Let waste curl/fall without steering the shears or dragging the keep-side.

For a long strip:

support/coil it away;

do not wrap around wrist;

stop before it catches furniture/body;

use helper if weight grows;

never pull waste to accelerate the cut.

On adhesive-faced material, prevent the offcut from sticking to the handle/pivot/finished face.

Cut straight lines

Use durable end/intermediate marks.

Keep eyes on the next several inches, not only the tip. Correct gradually before drift becomes visible; twisting the shears sharply can buckle material or nick the edge.

For precision long lines beyond hand-shear tolerance, use a guided machine/knife/cutter approved for the material.

Inspect straightness, edge condition, dimension, and pattern before the next piece copies an error.

Cut curves and notches

Use the largest smooth radius the design allows.

Rotate/move the sheet around the shears, keeping blades in a comfortable plane. Shorten strokes where curvature tightens.

For an inside notch:

approach from accessible edges;

stop at the root;

use a relief only through the material method;

avoid overcut beyond the corner.

No minimum radius or interior-cut capability is accepted. Use another tool for tight/closed geometry.

Work material by material

Wallcovering: preserve pattern/allowance; long dry table cuts; wet relief cuts only while margins are loose and supported.

Fabric: respect grain/weave; prevent layers from creeping; assess fray.

Foil: support fully; tune so it shears rather than folds; avoid sharp creases; stay within non-metalworking scope.

Plastic film/sheet: prevent stretch/static/bunch; avoid too many stacked layers.

Vinyl: relax curl; keep coatings/print clean; watch edge stretch.

These are trade considerations. Exact capacities remain material-specific.

Do not stack-cut by convenience

Multiple layers can shift, compress, heat, hide a bad edge, or exceed blade overlap.

Stack only when the exact material/process has proved:

edge quality on every layer;

No 34015 layer capacity is accepted.

For pattern-critical work, cut/verify one piece at a time unless the controlled method says otherwise.

Make wet relief cuts carefully

For pasted/hung wallcovering still loose at a margin:

protect nearby finish;

support wet material;

keep blades clean;

cut the long open relief only;

stop before the visible terminal trim;

use the wallcovering system’s guided knife/trim method for the final line.

Do not pull an already smoothed strip away merely to fit the shears under a finish edge.

Wipe paste promptly; do not let it dry in pivot/edges.

Inspect the result

crushed/folded edge;

surface scratch/transfer;

hidden lower-layer error;

Do not “correct” a short finished piece by stretching it.

Retain an approved witness for unfamiliar materials where repeated production needs comparison.

Clean and store

Follow compatible cleaning. Stainless corrosion resistance is accepted; immunity is not.

Remove paste/adhesive/film residue without:

immersing unknown grips/pivot;

scraping edges with another blade;

using incompatible solvent;

leaving lint/grit;

closing on hard debris.

Dry thoroughly. Store closed/protected so tips/edges cannot contact other tools or hands.

No oil/cleaner/sharpening method is a Hyde claim.

Protect hands and eyes

Keep the free hand beyond the moving intersection and never catch a falling offcut near open blades.

Select hand protection for sharp sheet/cut edges while retaining control under OSHA’s hand-protection standard.

Use eye protection where brittle film, foil edge, springy offcut, or damaged tool can create flying hazards under OSHA’s eye and face standard.

Carry/store closed; never hand over point-first.

Record recurring work

Record material, condition, tension method, layout/template, layer count, edge result, cleaning issue, tool condition, operator/date.

Use records to separate:

pivot/tension drift;

Plan long cuts as material-handling work

On a long sheet, cutting quality depends on what the uncut sheet and growing offcut are allowed to do.

Before opening the shears, decide:

where the keeper remains supported;

whether the waste falls, curls, or must be carried;

how the sheet advances without dragging on the floor;

who controls a large free end;

where the operator can walk without crossing the blade path;

how the cut exits without bending the tips.

Use a trained helper for sheet handling when needed. The helper supports and advances material only on a stated signal; they never pull the offcut to “help” the blades.

If the sheet has a strong curl, relax it through the material-approved method before layout. Do not fight stored curl by twisting the 34015 through the cut.

For a long straight finished edge, make a short scrap proof to establish where the cutting intersection follows the guide. Keep attention at that intersection rather than staring at the tips. Advance the material or body before reach becomes unstable.

Stop and re-support whenever the keeper lifts, the waste loads the lower blade, or the operator must lean beyond balanced footing.

Handle openings, corners, and relief cuts honestly

Closed interior openings normally require a verified starting hole and may require another tool; the accepted 34015 record supplies no piercing method or minimum opening.

For an outside corner:

lay out both legs from the keeper;

plan which offcut can move;

approach the intersection without overrunning it;

stop short if the material tends to tear;

complete the second leg from a supported direction;

inspect the corner before trimming a residual fiber.

A small relief cut in suitable waste may prevent a large offcut from steering the shears, but it must stay entirely outside the keeper and be proven on the material.

Do not stab with the tips into taut vinyl, laminated wallcovering, or fabric and assume the puncture will stay at the mark. Use the project-approved opening method.

If a curve tightens until the blades must be twisted, stop. A wider layout, another cutting tool, or a template/process change is the honest fix.

Finally, inspect the lower face wherever the sheet was stacked or supported. A clean top line can conceal scoring from grit, clamp pressure, or a trapped offcut. Disposition both faces against the job requirement.

Record any hidden-face defect with the station and support arrangement that produced it.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

Thin foil folds between blades. Stop, inspect/tune on scrap, and support fully.

Heavy vinyl pushes off line. Relax/support and score only if the material/physical method proves.

Fabric layers creep. Cut singly or improve controlled clamping.

Short bites scallop the edge. Use longer smooth arcs with fewer re-entries.

The offcut steers the shears. Support/clear waste without pulling.

The tool is used on sheet metal. Stop; the claim is decorating-class foil, plastic, vinyl, fabric, wallcovering.

Wet paper tears. Support it, clean/check edges, and shorten the open relief cut.

The pivot is tightened until it binds. Retune through the tool procedure.

Paste dries in the joint. Clean promptly and inspect before reuse.

A curve requires twisting the blades. Move the sheet/choose another tool.
