Scope: place and finish an approved drywall compound on a known, prepared drywall surface where a fixed obstruction blocks an ordinary joint knife. This is an access-constrained compound job using exactly Hyde 02700 and 02701. It does not authorize moving or working inside equipment, selecting a compound system, coating an unknown surface, reaching past unverified services, or accepting work that cannot be inspected. Product length is not a promise of reach, clearance, fit, or safe access.
Time: no universal duration, coat count, working window, set time, dry time, recoat interval, or return-to-service time is stated. The exact compound system, assembly, environment, obstruction procedure, and inspection plan own the schedule.
Difficulty: high judgment in a small area. The knife movement is simple once the job is admitted. The hard work is proving what the obstruction is, what lies behind it, which surface is actually in scope, whether the compound belongs there, and whether every loaded stroke can enter, finish, withdraw, and be read back under control.
Both exact-model packages identify flexible high-carbon-steel blades.
No universal compound, thinner, primer, abrasive, cleaner, PPE set, or access device is supplied here.
Keep this job distinct from corners and generic tight quarters
The target may be flat wall, a joint, or a bounded return, but the tool must pass the object before it can work.
That is not the same as the three neighboring pointing-knife jobs:
Finish a corner apex junction owns a three-plane termination.
Tape and finish corners in tight quarters owns an accessible inside corner with too little swing for an ordinary rectangular knife. The crease remains the guide.
Detail patch tight spots owns a local defect that a wider blade bridges or corner-prints. The defect, not an obstruction path, defines the work.
This guide owns compound delivery through a verified slot, a controlled draw out, and independent readback. It does not re-author a whole corner, tape embed, flat-joint coat, or patch repair.
If a conventional joint knife can prepare, coat, feather, and inspect the target, use it. Obstruction removal is another job. A narrow blade does not turn uncertain access into admitted work.
Resolve the name and material before selecting a knife
“Pointing” crosses three trades. The material settles the collision:
Drywall joint compound under an approved wall-system procedure may admit 02700 or 02701.
Mortar belongs to masonry pointing trowels, not either knife here.
Glazing putty belongs to the putty-knife system, not this obstruction guide.
Catalog family context associates pointing knives with inside corners and tight areas.
Record the exact wall surface, existing layer, compound product, and required result. Mortar, sealant, glazing compound, adhesive, firestop, pipe dope, insulation mastic, or unknown residue stops this guide. Similar consistency does not create compatibility.
This guide gives no shutdown, isolation, pressure-release, movement, cover-removal, or temperature procedure. It does not authorize disturbing a pipe, emitter, bracket, guard, or enclosure or using the knife inside equipment.
If the exact object and its released work state are not proven, stop before inserting a metal tool.
Plans, current records, exposed inspection, or the responsible trade must establish what occupies the intended path. Do not infer absence because the visible face looks like drywall.
A detector, camera, or photograph contributes only within its documented capability; none is a clearance certificate. A live or damaged service, suspect insulation, leak, heat source, moving part, or unknown object stops the job. Never feel blindly behind an obstruction.
Confirm that the target is actually a drywall finishing surface included in the work. A shadow line can be a ventilation opening, movement gap, fire or smoke joint, access seam, gasket boundary, uncoated back, service clearance, or penetration detail. Compound must not bridge it merely because a knife can enter.
The current assembly specification owns preparation and finish.
3.4 The compound manufacturer owns chemistry and clocks
The exact label and current technical documents must authorize substrate, reinforcement, mixing or adjustment, conditions, build, recoat, correction, primer, cleanup, and service. Do not average products or transfer familiar habits.
No universal consistency, bead size, coat thickness, number of passes, temperature, humidity, ventilation rate, working time, set time, dry time, or recoat time belongs in this guide. “Thin” below is qualitative control language: use less material per admitted pass so the hidden area does not receive an uncontrolled deposit. It is not a dimensional specification.
3.5 A dry physical proof owns access
The clean knife, protected obstruction, target, path, and inspection method must work together dry. Success includes entry, controlled contact, the intended stroke, withdrawal, and readback.
Do not assume 02701 fits because its blade is 6", that 02700 fits because it is shorter, or that either can bend around an obstacle because the package says flexible. If the tool must be bent to an invented shape, forced, fished blind, extended, struck, pried, or attached to another handle, reject the path.
Define a visible completion boundary
Mark the exact coating surface and every exclusion. Describe the permitted boundary from stable features and never beyond the portion the approved inspection method can verify.
the obstruction itself unless a separate coating procedure expressly includes it;
valves, vents, terminals, cords, unions, labels, sensors, controls, removable seams, drain paths, and openings;
pipe insulation, unknown wrap, friable material, and unfinished cavities;
the annular space around a penetration unless the assembly detail expressly calls for the named material there;
any zone beyond verified inspection.
Completion means the authorized target passes inspection, exclusions remain clean, and inaccessible areas are recorded rather than guessed.
Inspect the target, the path, and the exact two knives
Illuminate from useful sightlines. Use an authorized inspection aid only where it gives a reliable view. Confirm the surface is sound, stable, prepared, and in the state the compound requires.
Stop for lifted tape, moving board, active cracking, moisture, contamination, loose substrate, torn facing outside an approved repair, unknown legacy material, or a defect that cannot be prepared and inspected through the admitted path. New compound cannot stabilize an unproven base.
Before disturbing old compound, texture, coating, or insulation, obtain the applicable hazard determination. 16 CFR Part 1304 prohibited certain asbestos-containing consumer patching compounds, but does not clear an existing layer. Paint disturbance may invoke lead-safe work.
Inspect 02700 and 02701 clean and dry. Remove a tool from service for a loose blade, crack, permanent distortion, damaged tip or edge, corrosion or residue at the working surface, or any condition that prevents a clean, predictable pass. Do not invent field sharpening, edge dressing, or a bend specification.
Select by proven path, not a reach story
The registered set is exact, but the job may admit one member or neither.
Do not translate it into a promised depth, an obstruction class, or “roughly twice the reach.” Its “Clipped” name is exact, but no accepted source authorizes a claim that the clip is safer, prevents gouging, clears a particular slot, or wipes a specified end geometry. The catalog’s phrase 6" at 30° angle remains quoted only as an unresolved nominal; no source labels what the angle measures.
Use 02700 when the dry path admits the shorter exact blade and its shorter format is the proven controlled presentation. Do not call it a shallow-gap knife by dimension or promise that it turns within a particular clearance. It is simply the registered shorter member whose actual fit must be demonstrated.
Use neither if the working face cannot be placed, drawn, withdrawn, and inspected without collision, force, uncontrolled flex, or contact with an excluded feature. Qualified obstruction removal or a different authorized access method may be the honest next plan. This guide does not prescribe either.
Protect before loading
Protection must preserve object function and the proven path, using only approved materials and attachment methods.
Protect the floor and accessible adjacent faces.
Shield the obstruction from transfer without covering a label, vent, sensor, drain, control, connection, removable seam, or required opening.
Keep protection out of the tool’s contact and withdrawal path. Re-run the dry rehearsal after protection is installed; a mask changes clearance.
Provide a clean landing surface where the loaded knife can be set down without crossing equipment or finished work.
Do not assume water, solvent, scraping, or wiping is safe for the obstruction.
If protection cannot be installed without hiding the readback or compromising the object, the job is not admitted.
Load only after the system and route are proven
Prepare the compound exactly as instructed. Segregate uncertain material and keep dried fragments or grit away from the working edge.
Load the proven working portion for one short, inspectable pass—not maximum carriage. Falling, stringing, protection contact, or a need for an unverified consistency change stops loading.
Keep the handle and nonworking surfaces clean. Reload sooner rather than pressing harder to extract a depleted charge. Pressure is not a substitute for material, access, or a stable presentation.
Deliver through the obstruction path
Use the rehearsed orientation and no other. “Tip-leading” describes sequence, not an invented angle:
Enter on the verified path with the working end leading and without touching the obstruction, protection, excluded features, or hidden services.
Stop at the first planned placement point. Do not search for the wall with a loaded blade.
Place compound on the authorized drywall surface using only enough controlled blade loading to transfer it.
Advance only through the segment that remains controlled and inspectable. Do not connect two visible endpoints with an assumed blind sweep.
Withdraw if the blade catches, changes presentation, flexes unpredictably, or contacts anything outside the target. Do not add force.
Where the target can be approached from two sides, separate short admitted passes may be better than one long hidden pass. Their join still must be inspected. Do not sweep across a pipe support, bracket, penetration, or service feature to make the passes meet.
Strike on the draw stroke out
Here strike means lay down and remove excess compound during the controlled draw toward the opening. It does not mean hit the knife, cut a joint, or compress a proprietary material to an invented dimension.
Set the accepted working edge on the placed material and draw along the rehearsed exit path. Let the edge—not the tip alone—perform the finishing contact. Maintain a moving, controlled pass and reduce load as the blade approaches visible work so the hidden coat joins the accessible finish without a hard deposit at the mouth of the slot.
Keep coats qualitatively lean enough that each one can be read and corrected by the authorized method. Do not chase an invisible ridge with repeated blind strokes. If the draw leaves the target before the intended endpoint, the path is too ambitious: shorten the next pass or reject the inaccessible remainder.
As soon as the stroke exits, inspect the blade. Unexpected debris, discoloration, fibers, damaged compound, or contact marks can reveal a false path. Stop before repeating it.
Read back every group of strokes
Read back with the proved method under useful light and compare the result with exact system criteria.
Classify what you see:
Uniform authorized coverage with a controlled transition: continue only if another system-required pass remains.
A proud rail, bead, nib, or deposit: high material; correct only by the compound maker’s authorized method and only where access remains proven.
A hollow, skip, pinhole, or uncoated authorized area: low material; add material under the system rather than abrading surrounding sound work down to it.
A smear on the obstruction or excluded feature: stop the compound workflow.
No reliable view of the result: no acceptance. Reduce the work boundary, create authorized inspection access, or record the area as inaccessible.
Do not call work complete from blade feel alone. A concealed coat that cannot be checked is not proven.
Cleanup, dry-state inspection, and handback
Move both knives to the protected landing area before residue hardens.
Recover or discard remaining compound only as its current instructions and site plan allow. Do not return worked or contaminated material by habit.
Clean both knives by a method authorized for the exact compound, inventing no solvent or edge treatment, and dry their high-carbon-steel working surfaces completely.
Remove protection without dragging it through the new coat or across the obstruction. Dispose of compound, wipes, masking, and debris under the SDS, hazard plan, and waste rules.
Inspect the work again at the compound system’s required dry or hardened condition. Wet sheen can hide rails, skips, and transitions. Correct highs and lows only under the specified method and timing.
Record the admitted surface, knife, material system, inspection method, inaccessible areas, corrections, and disposition.
That procedure—not the compound’s apparent dryness—owns reassembly, restart, or service.
The path changes after masking, or withdrawal is uncontrolled. Failed access.
Compound transfers to a pipe, radiator, bracket, wire, label, control, or opening. Stop. Do not wipe blindly or operate the system.
The blade catches on something unseen. Withdraw without probing. A pointing knife is not an inspection pick.
A heavy deposit or mouth ridge remains. Correct when the system permits, then reduce load, shorten the pass, and keep the exit moving.
The hidden center is skipped. Do not flood from both ends and assume they met. Prove a shorter inspection route, create authorized access, or record the center as inaccessible.
The coat scores, smears, rolls, tears, skins, or drags. Stop. Inspect the edge and consult exact material instructions; do not correct with invented water, pressure, or timing.
Existing tape or facing moves. The substrate was not admitted. Stop coating and route to the applicable repair/system procedure.
Do not dry brush, sand, or vacuum under this guide.
The selected knife cannot present or reach under proof. Test the other registered member dry under the same gates; never extend either or infer fit from length.
Readback is ambiguous. Ambiguous is open, not passed. Change light or authorized inspection access; otherwise reduce and record the completion boundary.

Is the material confirmed drywall compound under an exact system?
No → neither model is admitted.
No → stop before tool selection.
Are hidden services and excluded features resolved for the complete path?
No → stop; no knife length cures uncertainty.
Can 02701 enter, place, draw, withdraw, and be read back in a clean dry rehearsal?
Yes → it is the admitted longer member.
No → it has no role merely because the target looks deep.
Can 02700 complete the same proof?
Yes → it is the admitted shorter member.
No → it has no role merely because the opening looks shallow.
Do both pass? Choose the more controlled proven presentation; no reach ratio or clearance claim decides it. If neither can be read back, buy neither for this plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is 02701 guaranteed to reach behind a radiator?
The exact obstruction procedure and a clean dry rehearsal decide.
Is 02700 the knife for shallow gaps?
It is the registered shorter member at 3-1/2". Use it only where the physical path, stroke, withdrawal, and inspection are proven.
What does the 30° on 02701 mean?
The catalog prints 6" at 30° angle, but no source labels what the angle measures. This guide neither decodes it nor turns it into a working angle, clip angle, clearance, or stroke instruction.
Can I bend either flexible blade to get around a pipe?
“Flexible” identifies the package attribute; it does not authorize forming the tool around an obstruction. Reject a path that depends on an invented bend.
How thick should the compound be, and how long should it dry?
The exact compound and wall-system instructions decide application build, number of coats, conditions, and every clock. “Thin” here means controlled lower loading for inspectable passes, not a specified thickness.
What if the wall looks acceptable but the deepest part cannot be seen?
It is not proven acceptable. Create authorized inspection access, narrow the completion boundary, or record that portion as inaccessible.
History note — a drywall-age exception tool
The pointing knife is a shared trade pattern, not a documented Hyde invention.
The National Inventors Hall of Fame records Augustine Sackett’s 1894 paper-faced gypsum-board patent. That explains the young trade context, not this blade’s origin. No Hyde invention claim is made.
Sources, conflict gate, and graph register
Existing line/product prose sometimes translates 6" versus 3-1/2" into “roughly twice as deep” or treats 02701 as a radiator/pipe reach answer.
Existing prose describes the 02701 clip as reducing blind gouging or wiping flat at its end. “Clipped” is accepted in the official name, but those performance effects are not accepted exact-model claims.
The 02701 catalog nominal 6" at 30° angle is unresolved. Do not decode or diagram it.
