Dead-smooth walls — at 1/2" the nap lays a visible stipple a 3/8" E-volution wouldn't, so on glass-smooth drywall you step down, not up.
Heavy knockdown, stucco, and masonry — the 1/2" can't reach deep texture and microfiber's fine fibers snag and tear on rough surfaces; that work wants a longer nap in a woven or general-purpose fabric.
And gloss doors and cabinets — wrong nap and wrong grade entirely; that's a 1/4" or foam job.

The microfiber rule still governs
light hand — but the 1/2" nap holds an even bigger load, so load control is the added skill: start each pass away from your wet edge and distribute before you fill, or the cover dumps a fat stripe. On ceilings, the pole changes your leverage; let the nap's weight of paint do the work and keep passes overlapping into wet. Microfiber rinses slowly, and a 1/2" nap holds more paint deep in the fibers, so clean it thoroughly to the core. De-lint before the first load. On texture, roll a touch slower to let the longer fibers reach the valleys rather than skating the peaks.

Why is this the ceiling cover?
Capacity and control: the 1/2″ nap carries more paint per dip (fewer overhead reloads), and microfiber's capillary hold means less of that load drips and spatters back down on you.
Can I use it on smooth walls?
You can, but you'll see more stipple than a 3/8″ E-volution leaves. On dead-smooth drywall, step down to the 98130.
How is it different from the 3/8″ pack (98130)?
One nap longer: it reaches light-to-medium texture the 3/8″ bridges, and holds more paint for ceilings — at the cost of more stipple on smooth walls.
Microfiber or the woven 1/2″ (99204)?
Microfiber (this cover) for the finish and low spatter; woven (99204) for durability, epoxy/solvent chemistry, and no shedding.
Is it really 9″?
Richard builds its "9-inch" at 9-1/2″ actual ; it still fits a standard 9″ cage.
