Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Walls of any kind, and texture of any kind.
  • Foam holds too little paint to cover a wall without endless reloads, mats and tears on anything textured, and bubbles in the fast latex most walls are painted in.
  • It reaches no valleys — there is no nap to reach with.
  • For a wall use a fiber cover at 3/8" or longer; for masonry, foam is simply the wrong tool at every nap.

How the pros run it

01

Foam rewards patience and punishes speed. Roll slowly

a fast foam roller entrains air and prints a fine bubble-stipple into gloss and varnish, the signature foam failure. Load lightly and reload often; foam's capacity is small, and pressing to stretch a load only compresses the sponge and squeezes paint out at the shoulders. Don't overwork a section — one distributing pass and one gentle lay-off, then leave it; going back into setting clear coat drags bubbles up. In fast-drying waterborne latex, foam is prone to bubbling, which is a large part of why foam is aimed at slower-leveling enamels and finishes rather than wall latex.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Does it have a phenolic (solvent-proof) core?
No — that is the 9″ Speciality foam covers. This mini rides a standard core , which suits its use-and-discard life; long solvent soaking will eventually soften a standard core, which is a reason to toss rather than store it.
Why foam instead of a fiber cover?
No fibers means no lint and no roller stipple — the smoothest small-surface film, best for gloss enamel, varnish, and polyurethane.
Why does it bubble sometimes?
Rolling too fast or overworking entrains air, especially in fast latex. Slow down, load lightly, lay off once. Foam is happiest in slower-leveling enamels and clears.
Wash it or throw it away?
For solvent work, discard — that's the point of the four-pack. For waterborne clears you can rinse, but foam is a consumable, not a keeper.
What does "double round end" do?
It rounds the cover's shoulders so pass edges feather instead of tracking a line into the wet finish.
