Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Long production cuts — the short blade means many strokes where a longer numbered knife (the #3, #5, or #6) makes one.
  • Heavy rubber, belting, or two-handed force work — the light .058" blade and bare hardwood handle are built for controlled leather detail, not for leaning through a conveyor belt; that is the .083" full-size square points' job, and where policy governs the force, their finger-guard safety siblings'.
  • Skiving — thinning an edge is the skiver's shaving job, not a square-point cut.
  • Applying or spreading anything — this is a cutting knife with no flex; it is not a putty or filling knife despite the shared silhouette elsewhere in Hyde's catalog.
  • And it is not a pry bar or a can-opener: the fine leather-bench edge is easy to chip and slow to re-grind if you abuse the point.

How the pros run it

01

Bench and surface

Cut on a sacrificial surface — a poly board or a lift of scrap under the line — never on a bench top that matters; even a square-nosed knife severs through to what is beneath. Grip for control. Choke up: thumb and forefinger close behind the ferrule, the blade an extension of the fingertips. On the #1 that is the whole point — it is a short knife bought for control, not leverage. Angle. Lay the edge low to slice on the draw; a steep blade chatters and hops on leather. The square end is a tool, not a limitation. Ride it against the board to work into corners and to stop a cut clean. Edge care — the heritage contract. This is hardened high-carbon cutlery steel, and it is bought to be maintained, not fed: hone it back to keen on a stone, strop it true, and it will trim for years. The trade-off is rust — carbon steel plus moisture blooms overnight, so wipe the blade dry after any damp, oily, or cased-leather work and it stays clean. That maintain-don't-replace bargain is the dividing line between this whole heritage wing and the snap-off and utility knives elsewhere in the line, whose blades are consumables.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why is it called a square point if it's for cutting?
Because the blade ends in a blunt square end instead of a tip — the feature that keeps it from puncturing the layer or the surface beneath the cut. It is a cutting knife; the "square point" names the end shape.
Why choose the #1 over the bigger numbers?
Control on small, close, tight-radius work. It is the shortest blade in the series, so your hand rides right behind the edge. For longer cuts, step up the ladder.
Is it a good beginner leather knife?
Yes for small goods and detail — it is easy to steer and easy to sharpen. For long straightedge cuts you'll also want a longer number (a #3 or #5).
Will it rust?
It is high-carbon steel, so yes if left wet. Wipe it dry after damp or oily work; hone and strop to keep the edge. That upkeep is the deal with every fixed blade in this heritage wing.
Can I skive with it?
Not really — skiving is a shaving job for the thin skiver (55170), and tight corners for the narrow #2. The #1 trims; it doesn't thin.
