CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Specially design hang pails to the outside of a ladder. One-piece plated steel construction. Flat ends can be used to open paint cans. Not recommended for 5-gallon pails.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Five-gallon pails — the maker's own line, restated here as often as it takes.
  • Odd-angle purchases: a one-piece hook holds its made angle, so a hanging point that isn't a square horizontal bearing cants the whole geometry — the swivel sibling exists precisely for those.
  • Windowsill duty: the sill call-out belongs to the 45110's official description, and this page does not borrow claims any more than it invents them.
  • Rigging, towing, and tool-bag duty beyond its pail: it is a pail hook, engineered and guaranteed as one, and the fact that steel is strong is not a rating.
  • And it opens paint cans, not bottles — the loop that does bottles lives on the openers.

How the pros run it

01

Seat, then tug

The bail goes fully home in the hook's curve before weight transfers; the one-second tug before release is non-negotiable. Purchase choice. Set the hook where its bearing is full and square, not on a corner or a taped edge; if the hook can rock on its purchase, move it. Match the heights. Hook just below shoulder height of the working stance — reloads stay a wrist motion and the pail never crowds the stroke. Keep the charge shallow. An inch or two: dip control, sway control, spill control, all one habit. Inspect the gape. One-piece steel has no parts to fail, but hard abuse leaves evidence: a hook loaded far past pail duty can spread at its open curves, and a bail seat whose curve has visibly opened is a hook to retire. The check is a glance a year. Plated steel care. The plating is the finish; wipe paint off wet, and the hook outlives its owner. Nothing else on the tool can need care, because nothing else is on the tool.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Can I hang a 5-gallon bucket from these?
No — Hyde's own description says not recommended for 5-gallon pails. Decant into a working pail and hang the charge; the five stays on the ground.
Will my pail's bail fit?
Compatibility beyond the 5-gallon exclusion is unstated in the claims — including the 45115 pairing — so check your bail in the hook before trusting it at height. The seat-and-tug ritual is the field test.
Why two in the package?
Two ladders, or one plus the spare that small steel tools always eventually need, or two painters. One pail needs one hook; the second is logistics.
Do they really open paint cans?
Yes — the flat ends, per the official description, using the standard walk-the-lid-around pry. For the full opening-and-resealing doctrine (and the bottle-opening loop), see the 46445/46455 opener guides.
Fixed hook or swivel?
If your hanging point is a square rung and you value the absence of failure modes, this pair. If your work involves leaning ladders, sills, or a jobsite where pails get bumped, the 45110's hinge and catch earn their parts count.
Stepladder or extension — does it matter?
The principle travels unchanged: outside the climbing line, full square bearing, no rock on the purchase, tug before trusting. The official design case is hanging pails to the outside of a ladder, and the bearing tests are how you honor it on whichever ladder is under you.
Can I move the ladder with the pail hanging?
No. Pail off, hook off or left placed, then move. A hung load changes a carried ladder's balance, and the habit is not worth the paint.
