How to Wash Siding Before Repainting
The union is a lead set, not a universal kit. Exact siding-maker care instructions, the existing coating’s condition, the selected cleaner label/SDS, the pressure-washer manual, and the new coating’s technical data sheet (TDS) outrank any general workflow below.

Local line/product prose also carries unsourced universal distance, bleach, TSP, plant, cleaner, drying, and siding-method language. This guide does not repeat those statements as universal instructions.
Job: remove the dirt, chalk, biological growth, salts, and other surface contamination that would interfere with an exterior repaint—without driving water behind the siding, eroding the face, stripping sound coating unintentionally, spreading regulated paint debris, or trapping moisture beneath the new system.
Time: no universal wash or drying time. The wall size and access set the working time; the cleaner label sets dilution, application, wet dwell, agitation, and rinse; the siding maker sets the permitted cleaning method; weather and wall construction set drying; the primer and finish TDS set the coating-ready endpoint. “Dry tomorrow” is not a specification.
Difficulty: diagnosis and containment first, washing second. The wrong method can turn a paint-prep job into siding replacement, wet sheathing, lead-contaminated runoff, damaged landscaping, or premature coating failure.

Before water: identify the wall and the failure
Identify the siding, finish, age, and assembly
Do not choose the washer by what the wall resembles from the driveway. Record the siding material/maker, existing finish, lap or panel assembly, building and renovation age, and proposed coating. Find the exact care or repaint instruction; a warranty document may prohibit what a general painting article recommends.
The present primary-source split is decisive:
CertainTeed recommends soap, a soft-bristle brush, and a garden-hose rinse for its vinyl products and says it does not recommend power washing because of moisture intrusion, damage, or discoloration.
James Hardie says pressure washing can damage its siding and directs a low-pressure garden-hose spray with a soft or medium-bristle siding brush.
Those are not contradictions to average together. They are proof that “siding” is not one pressure setting.
Inspect before deciding that washing is the next operation
Walk the wall dry in daylight. Mark failed or powdering paint; transferable chalk; growth; grease, soot, rust/tannin bleed, salts, or efflorescence; soft wood, cracked panels, warped vinyl, open seams, failed flashing/caulk; and leaks at openings or penetrations.
Washing removes contamination; it does not repair a water path. If the wall is already leaking, soft, open, or detached, repair and dry the assembly before adding more water. If broad growth returns because a gutter, roof, grading, sprinkler, or ventilation problem keeps the wall wet, correct that source. CDC’s current mold guidance is blunt: clean all visible mold and fix the water problem before painting or caulking (CDC — 8 Tips to Clean Mold).
Resolve lead and asbestos before a forceful wash
For pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities, disturbance of painted siding can enter EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule. A pressure stream that removes failing paint is not “just washing”; it is paint disturbance with airborne, soil, neighbor, and wastewater consequences.
Stop and establish the lead determination and work category before washing failed old paint. EPA’s current exterior guidance requires ground containment and, in close-property conditions, vertical containment or equivalent precautions (EPA — exterior renovation containment).
Older cementitious shingles or panels may contain asbestos. Do not pressure-wash, cut, drill, sand, scrape, or “test a corner” of suspect material. The job pauses here; a visually similar modern fiber-cement panel does not clear an older wall.
Decide whether the old coating is sound enough to wash
Adhesion testing belongs to the coating manufacturer’s written method, not an improvised tape trick. If normal washing lifts sheets of paint, the base was not coating-ready and the work has become removal/preparation. Do not turn a wash into uncontrolled hydraulic stripping.
Choose the least aggressive permitted lane
Use this order:
Hand wash / brush and garden hose when the siding maker prescribes it, when the face is delicate, when joints are vulnerable, or when contamination is light.
Hose-wand delivery/rinse only when the exact cleaner and siding instructions permit the applicator. Model 28470 can direct hose water and has a Soaper, but neither fact proves chemical compatibility or surface permission.
Pressure-assisted wash only where the exact siding, existing coating, cleaner, and machine instructions all allow it and lead/asbestos/runoff controls are resolved.
Professional or replacement lane for inaccessible high work, fragile historic fabric, severe biological growth, suspect hazardous material, failed wall assemblies, or a method conflict that cannot be reconciled.
Build the exact wash plan
Read every instruction before mixing or connecting
Read, in order, the siding cleaning/repaint instruction; cleaner label/SDS; washer, wand, tip, and accessory manuals; primer/topcoat TDS; and lead/asbestos/stormwater/employer rules. Record the permitted applicator, PPE, concentration, dwell, agitation, rinse, weather, disposal, and coating-ready endpoint. Anything absent stays unknown.
“Deck and Siding Cleaner” is an observed title, not permission for vinyl, fiber cement, wood, metal, painted siding, a particular coating, plant contact, or a Soaper reservoir. Obtain the physical label and SDS before use. “GreenWater+” is a brand name; do not translate it into biodegradable, non-toxic, environmentally safe, plant-safe, pet-safe, or drain-safe.
Do not invent a bleach or TSP recipe
Local line and product guides repeat Hyde family-context video guidance about bleach and TSP. That is not exact instruction for 28815-WPJ, model 28470, or every siding material. EPA says bleach/biocide is not recommended as a routine mold-cleanup practice and stresses that dead mold still must be removed; it also says never mix bleach with ammonia-containing cleaners (EPA — Should I use bleach to clean mold?).
follow that cleaner’s current label for mixing and dwell;
never combine cleaners or add bleach, ammonia, acid, detergent, or TSP unless the exact instruction calls for that combination;
do not pour an unknown chemistry into the 28470 Soaper;
do not claim that pre-wetting plants makes any formulation safe.
Plan runoff before the wall gets wet
Locate storm drains, catch basins, wells, septic components, ponds, streams, neighboring property, bare soil, and sensitive plantings. The fact that water starts at a hose bib does not make the wastewater clean.
Contain paint chips, cleaner, chalk, growth, and sediment. EPA’s construction stormwater program treats paint and chemical washout as pollutant sources where its permit applies (EPA — Stormwater Discharges from Construction Activities); local rules can be stricter. If the approved route requires recovery equipment you lack, stop.
Protect openings and isolate utilities
Close windows and doors. Repair or temporarily seal failed joints by a method compatible with the later coating system. Protect vents, electrical fixtures, meters, receptacles, cameras, alarms, condensers, and exterior equipment according to their manufacturers’ instructions; do not block required combustion air or drainage.
For electric washers, follow the manual and wet-location controls; CDC directs GFCI testing, grounding, and keeping rated connections out of water/runoff. Gas machines stay outdoors and the required distance from openings and air intakes (CDC — Pressure Washer Safety).
Set safe access
Do not operate a pressure washer from a ladder. Use controlled ground reach or properly designed access under its own plan; high courses beyond safe reach belong to qualified crews. Keep people, pets, vehicles, and loose objects outside the throw/runoff zones.
Test before the elevation
Test the complete system in an inconspicuous location
Test the actual cleaner, applicator, water source, siding, old coating, weather, and rinse method. Start with the gentlest permitted pattern and machine setting. No universal nozzle color, fan angle, pressure, or distance is provided. The pivot manages angle; it does not override a machine-wash prohibition.
At the specified dry endpoint, check for color/gloss change, etching, fuzzing, dents, lifted laps, exposed fiber, water entry, coating loss, residue, chalk, remaining growth, and compatibility with the coating maker’s test.
If the system damages the surface or does not clean it, change the approved method—not merely the pressure.
Wash in controlled sections
Dry-remove what should not enter the water stream
Within the lead/asbestos and waste plan, collect cobwebs, nests, loose debris, and removable hardware before washing. Do not dry-brush suspect lead dust or mold into the air. The method comes from the hazard plan.
Pre-rinse only if the exact system calls for it
Some cleaner labels require a wet substrate; others need contact with a dry surface or prohibit pre-wetting. Follow the label. If using water alone, a controlled rinse can expose the remaining contamination and cool a sun-heated wall, but it is not mandatory by folklore.
Keep water away from open laps, weep paths, vents, damaged joints, and penetrations. “Top-down” or “bottom-up” is subordinate to the siding and cleaner instructions.
Apply cleaner by the permitted method
Work an area small enough to complete within the label’s wet-dwell and weather limits. Use hand brush, pump sprayer, downstream injector, or hose reservoir only if every relevant instruction permits it.
Model 28815-WPJ’s title establishes neither that its cleaner goes in that reservoir nor which “Pivot Jet” comes in the box.
Where bottom-up application is directed, maintain a wet edge to prevent streaking. Where the exact product directs another pattern, follow it. Do not let cleaner dry unless its label expressly instructs that endpoint.
Agitate instead of escalating pressure
If the siding maker permits a soft or medium brush, let it lift the film around grain, laps, joints, trim, fasteners, and caulk. More pressure is not a universal substitute for chemistry, dwell, or agitation.
Growth that remains after cleaning may indicate a moisture source, deeply colonized porous material, or the wrong method. Do not paint over it. EPA notes that killing mold is not enough; it must be removed, and the moisture problem must be addressed.
Rinse completely without loading the wall cavity
Use clean water by the maker-directed method. Keep spray out of seams, laps, vents, joints, and penetrations; do not reach blindly above openings. Rinse to the label’s endpoint and manage runoff continuously.
For a pressure-washer lane:
confirm gun/wand/tip compatibility from the actual manuals before pressurizing;
for 28430, resolve the 3200/4000 PSI conflict if the machine exceeds 3200 PSI;
for 28440/28450, do not infer exact threads or seals from “1/4-inch style”;
bleed pressure by the machine manual before touching any connection or tip;
never point the stream at skin or another person.
A pressure-washer wound can look minor while causing deep damage. CDC directs prompt medical attention for high-pressure spray wounds. Tell the clinician it is a high-pressure injection injury and identify any cleaner in the stream.
Repeat only after the dry inspection
Wet siding hides chalk, abrasion, and growth.
After washing: prove coating readiness
Inspect the building inside and out
Check inside at openings and known leaks and outside at laps, joints, caulk, trim, and fasteners. If water entered, stop the coating schedule, dry appropriately, and repair the path.
Verify clean, sound, and dry—three separate tests
Clean: no cleaner residue, dirt film, chalk transfer beyond the coating maker’s acceptance, visible growth, salt, or grease.
Sound: the remaining coating passes the specified adhesion/condition test; siding is intact; no hydraulic damage occurred.
Dry: meet the siding, primer, and finish manufacturer’s written endpoint under current weather. Sherwin-Williams’ general guide describes the surface as clean, solid, and dry and elsewhere offers a broad drying window, but this guide does not promote that example into a universal schedule. Wood, fiber cement, laps, shaded walls, and wall cavities dry differently.
If the coating TDS specifies a moisture test, use its instrument, location, calibration, and limit. A random meter number is not proof.
Complete the preparation the wash exposed
Washing does not replace scraping, sanding, spot priming, caulk/rust/tannin treatment, or repair; perform them under their own hazard/product instructions. The new coating system decides bare-area primer, chalk treatment, vinyl color limits, and weather/recoat conditions.
Close the waste and equipment loop
Collect and label debris/wastewater by the approved route; never mix waste streams for convenience. Depressurize and disconnect by the manual.
What goes wrong — and the fix
Water appears inside around a window. Stop washing. The angle, pressure, joint, or assembly failed. Dry and repair the intrusion path before resuming; do not caulk over trapped water.
The siding face looks fuzzy, etched, striped, or lighter. Stop, let it dry, document the test, and consult the siding/coating maker.
Paint chips enter the runoff. Stop and activate the lead/paint-debris containment plan. If none exists, the job was not ready to wash.
Cleaner dries in streaks. Stop application, follow the exact label’s recovery/rinse instruction, shorten sections, and change the weather window. Do not add an improvised solvent or acid.
Black spotting remains. Do not simply increase pressure or paint over it. Verify whether it is biological growth, bleed, dirt, or staining; fix moisture; select the maker-approved removal method.
Chalk still transfers after rinsing. Repeat the approved cleaning/agitation lane or follow the coating maker’s chalk-binding preparation. Primer is not permission to leave uncontrolled powder.
The 28430 joint leaks. Depressurize per the manual and recheck fit, seals, and condition. Do not stack unknown adapters or sealants.
A 28440/28450 will not connect to the pro gun. “1/4-inch style” is not a complete thread specification. Stop; identify both exact fittings and use only a manufacturer-approved connection.
The 28470 Soaper delivers an unknown concentration. Stop chemical application. Reservoir and mix behavior are unverified in local evidence. Use a labeled, calibrated method approved by the cleaner.
The GreenWater+ bundle contains a different wand than expected. Preserve the physical evidence and instructions. The local record explicitly leaves the bundled model unresolved; do not force 28470 instructions onto it.
The wall feels dry but the primer blisters. Stop. Surface moisture, cavity moisture, residue, adhesion, or incompatible coating may remain. Diagnose against the primer/siding specifications before enlarging the failure.
A person receives a pressure-stream wound. Stop the machine, call for medical evaluation promptly, and report “high-pressure injection injury” plus the exact cleaner. A pinhole appearance is not reassurance.
Should siding always be pressure-washed before painting?
CertainTeed rejects power washing for its vinyl/polymer siding, and James Hardie rejects it for Hardie siding. Identify the exact wall and follow its maker. A brush and garden hose may be the required method.
What PSI, nozzle, and distance should I use?
This guide gives none. Those values depend on the exact machine, tip, siding, existing coating, and manufacturer instructions. The Hyde wand rating is a hardware ceiling, not a siding-cleaning prescription.
Do I wash from the bottom up or top down?
Follow the cleaner and siding instructions. Bottom-up application and top-down rinse are common trade patterns for avoiding cleaner streaks and carrying residue down, but they are not allowed to override an exact product method.
Can I use bleach or TSP?
Only when the exact siding, coating, cleaner, and safety instructions support it. EPA does not recommend bleach as routine mold cleanup, and bleach must never be mixed with ammonia-containing or other incompatible cleaners. No universal recipe appears here.
Is GreenWater+ safe for plants, pets, paint, vinyl, wood, or drains?
Model 28815-WPJ has zero accepted product claims.
Is the free Pivot Jet in 28815-WPJ the 28470 PivotJet Pro with Soaper?
The bundle title does not identify the wand model. Do not use 28470 reservoir or connection instructions until the physical package confirms the exact tool.
How long must siding dry before primer?
Until the exact siding, wall assembly, primer, and coating TDS endpoints are met in the actual weather. There is no universal time. Inspect for intrusion and test moisture only by a specified method.
Can a pivot wand make second-story washing safe from a ladder?
Its honest benefit is angle control from safe ground-level reach. Pressure recoil, hose drag, wet footing, and ladders are an unsafe combination; use proper access equipment or a professional.
Can I paint over a little mold if the primer says mildew-resistant?
CDC says clean all visible mold and fix the moisture problem before painting or caulking. A coating property does not convert contamination into a prepared substrate.
History footnote — washing became a power trade
Painters washed exterior surfaces before pressure washers existed because adhesion has always begun with a clean wall. Powered machines changed the rate and the failure mode; Hyde’s pivot changes nozzle angle instead of worker position. The old rule survives: power is useful only after the material says it may receive it. A vinyl maker’s hose instruction and a wand’s rating can both be true because they answer different questions.
