How to Wash a Deck Before Restaining

Scope boundary: This guide ends with clean, sound, dry, finish-ready decking. It does not invent a stain schedule; the selected stain manufacturer owns moisture, weather, application, and coating instructions.

Job: remove loose dirt, biological film, surface contamination, and cleaning residue from an existing wood deck so the remaining finish and wood can be evaluated and prepared for a compatible restain.

Time: inspection and test section, cleaning in manageable wet sections, then an evidence-based dry/readiness interval. Weather, wood, cleaner, old coating, and stain system own the clock; this guide states no universal drying time.

Difficulty: moderate. The risk is not failing to make the deck look wet and clean. It is eroding soft fibers, forcing water into assemblies, leaving chemistry behind, or staining wood that has not met the coating maker’s readiness criteria.

It is not a pressure-washer attachment. Hyde documents a soap reservoir, clean-water/soap control, adjustable pattern, and up to 135-degree pivot, but no reservoir capacity, mix behavior, chemical-compatibility list, flow, pressure, or temperature envelope.

Label and SDS must be obtained before this product is used or described procedurally.

Everything else: broom and nonmetallic crevice tool; deck-safe stiff synthetic brush if the chosen cleaner calls for agitation; garden hose with backflow protection where required; chemical splash eye protection, gloves, clothing, and footwear named by the cleaner SDS; compatible pump sprayer or applicator if required; plastic and wetting supplies for nearby plants only as the cleaner label permits; containment or diversion for cleaner-laden runoff; moisture meter or readiness method required by the chosen stain; abrasives for raised fibers after drying; replacement boards/fasteners where inspection finds failure. Before washing: diagnose what the deck actually needs

Inspect dry, in daylight

Remove furniture, planters, rugs, and grills. Sweep the surface before judging it. Walk every board and record:

loose or projecting fasteners;

rot, punky fibers, deep checks, splinters, and structurally loose boards;

peeling film, intact penetrating stain, gray weathered fiber, grease, tannin or rust marks, and biological growth;

areas shaded by planters or furniture;

end grain and joints that stay wet;

nearby siding, doors, electrical equipment, plants, soil, drains, ponds, and neighboring property in the runoff path.

Cleaning cannot repair rot, fasteners, or failed boards. Replace or repair structural defects before a pressure stream turns them into projectiles or enlarges them. If most of the old coating is a peeling film, washing alone is not removal; the job needs the coating maker’s stripping/preparation system. If the existing finish is sound, confirm the new stain is compatible before deciding how aggressively to remove it.

Identify the deck material

This guide is for wood. Composite and plastic-rich decking require their own manufacturer’s cleaning limits. Species and condition matter even within wood: weathered cedar and soft pine erode sooner than dense hardwood; damaged fibers and end grain accept water faster than sound faces. If the material is uncertain, stop at hose-pressure cleaning until identified.

Choose one cleaning system, not a chemical collage

There are two legitimate paths:

Chemistry-first / hose rinse: chosen deck cleaner, label-approved applicator, label-controlled wet dwell and agitation, followed by thorough hose rinse. This is the proportional path for dirt and biological film when the product is compatible.

Pressure-assisted rinse/removal: a compatible cleaner when needed, plus a pressure washer operated within the washer, wand, nozzle, wood, and coating manufacturers’ instructions. Pressure can lift loose contamination and failed material, but it is not a substitute for the right chemistry and can permanently fur or groove wood.

Do not mix cleaners, bleach, acids, ammonia, detergent, or brightener into a homemade sequence. Some deck systems require a cleaner/remover followed by a named neutralizer or restorer; others do not. Follow one manufacturer’s documented system through its endpoint.

Until its label and SDS are obtained, this guide cannot tell you how to dilute it, apply it, dwell it, agitate it, rinse it, protect plants from it, or dispose of runoff. “GreenWater+” is a brand name, not proof of environmental safety.

Prove the method on a test section

Build a complete test

Pick a hidden but representative area, ideally containing ordinary field boards and a weathered edge. Read the cleaner label/SDS and equipment manuals. Set the applicator, section size, protection, and rinse route exactly as instructed.

Complete the full cycle on the test:

pre-rinse or pre-wet only if directed;

apply the cleaner at its exact label concentration and rate;

keep it wet for the label’s dwell without extending the time;

agitate only with the approved brush and pressure;

rinse completely by hose first;

if pressure assistance is allowed, begin with the least aggressive approved fan, pressure, distance, and pass;

let the test dry to the readiness state specified for evaluation.

Judge it dry. Wet wood always looks darker, cleaner, and more uniform than it is. Look for raised fuzz, stripes, lap marks, color change, residue, loosened fibers, and incomplete finish removal. If the test cannot be cleaned without eroding the wood, change chemistry or hire a deck-refinishing professional; do not increase aggression across the field.

Set the site

Control water, electricity, people, and runoff

Close doors and windows. Protect or de-energize exterior receptacles and equipment as their manufacturer requires; keep cords and connections out of standing water. Move children, pets, furniture, and breakable objects outside the work zone. A gasoline pressure washer runs outdoors and away from openings; CDC warns against running gasoline equipment in buildings or partially enclosed spaces because of carbon monoxide.

Trace the deck’s drainage before applying cleaner. Identify where water leaves between boards and at stair edges. Cleaner-laden runoff does not automatically belong in soil or a storm drain. Use the cleaner label, SDS, and local discharge rules to decide capture, diversion, or disposal. Do not promise that 28815-WPJ is plant-safe or drain-safe: no such claim is accepted.

Protect adjacent surfaces by the chosen product’s instructions

Plant protection is chemistry-specific. Some labels direct pre-wetting and post-rinsing; some require covering; plastic left in sun can overheat foliage. Glass, aluminum, painted siding, masonry, and hardware may react differently to cleaners. Follow the exact label rather than a universal “cover everything” rule.

Keep a clean-water hose ready for emergency rinse and for preventing accidental drying, but do not dilute applied cleaner unless the label permits misting.

Configure the correct water tool

Choose by system and connection

Garden-hose path: use 28470 only as its documented hose tool. It accepts standard garden-hose accessories and provides a Soaper, pattern control, and pivot. The Soaper’s chemical compatibility and metering are unverified; put no cleaner in it until that cleaner’s instructions and Hyde’s tool instructions approve the use. If approval is absent, apply cleaner with its specified separate applicator and use 28470 only for clean-water rinsing.

Pressure-washer path: the gun fitting decides the wand:

M22-style consumer gun → 28430, after resolving the machine pressure against the 3200/4000 PSI conflict and verifying the exact connection;

official “1/4-inch style” professional gun → 28440 or 28450, after verifying the exact thread and connection;

no adapters or named-brand compatibility are inferred.

Before any connection, shutdown, depressurization, tip fit or change, leak test, or commissioning action, the exact current manuals for the machine and gun, selected wand, and selected tip/nozzle must agree on the complete assembly and procedure. Visual observation may reject a candidate; it cannot approve an undocumented assembly or supply a missing physical sequence.

Let the deck—not the machine rating—set aggression

The wand’s pressure ceiling is not a wood-cleaning prescription. The machine and nozzle determine delivered force, and the wood test determines what it tolerates. Use the washer and coating manufacturers’ deck-preparation instructions for pressure, fan, distance, and flow.

This guide therefore gives no generic PSI, nozzle degree, or inch distance. Begin at the least aggressive approved setup and approach only within the tested envelope. If a manual, cleaner label, stain specification, and substrate limit conflict, follow the most restrictive or ask the manufacturers.

Wash in a controlled sequence

Dry clean first

Sweep from the house outward. Clear board gaps without damaging edges. Dirt left in gaps turns into slurry and reappears during rinse. Scrape off leaf mats and packed mud with a nonmetallic tool. Remove grease or coating failure only by the chosen system’s directions; pressure alone often drives contamination or damage deeper.

Work one complete section at a time

Choose a natural stopping point—several boards, one stair flight, one railing bay—small enough that cleaner cannot dry. Follow label order. When chemistry is applied:

measure and mix only as directed;

apply at the prescribed rate;

start timing at application, not after the whole deck is coated;

maintain wetness only by an approved method;

agitate with the grain and approved brush where directed;

prevent overlap edges from drying.

Do not use the 28815-WPJ title to fill these blanks. Its 32-ounce size says nothing about concentration or coverage, and the “FREE Pivot Jet” wording does not establish that the included wand is 28470 or has a Soaper.

Rinse chemistry before using pressure as a cutting tool

Rinse the section thoroughly according to the label. Direct water so it carries residue off the work without flooding the building envelope or sending cleaner to a prohibited discharge. Flush board gaps and underside drip paths until the product’s rinse endpoint is met.

If pressure assistance is allowed and still needed, move to the tested setup. Keep two hands on the gun/wand. Start each pass moving, proceed with the grain, maintain constant speed and distance, overlap consistently, and carry the stroke beyond the section before reversing. Never hover over a dark spot. A spot that requires stationary spray needs a different chemistry or separate repair, not a deeper groove.

Use the pivot for geometry, not extra attack. Board faces, rail tops, balusters, stair risers, and skirting face different directions; angle the nozzle so the approved fan meets each surface consistently while your body remains stable. Do not chase a perfectly square impact if the wood-safe method calls for a gentler glancing rinse—the surface and system instructions outrank maximum cleaning power.

Keep high pressure away from bodies and ladders

CDC warns that pressure-washer spray can cause serious wounds that initially appear minor, throw debris, and create electrical hazards (CDC pressure-washer safety). Wear the equipment manual’s eye, hearing, hand, foot, and body protection. Never point the stream at yourself or another person. Never use the spray to move objects. Keep bystanders away.

The pivot wand exists to improve angle from stable footing; it does not make ladder operation acceptable. If the work cannot be reached safely from the deck or ground, use proper staging or a professional.

Any pressure-stream injury warrants prompt medical evaluation even when the entry mark looks small; tell the clinician it is a high-pressure injection injury. If a nozzle, tip, clog, or wand requires attention, stop work and use only the exact current machine/gun, wand, and tip/nozzle manuals’ mutually compatible shutdown, stored-pressure, service, and recommissioning procedures.

Finish railings, stairs, and edges without striping

Clean top rails and horizontal cap surfaces before verticals so runoff does not cross finished sections. On balusters, shorten sections and change pivot angle as faces turn. Rinse joints without driving water into door thresholds, siding laps, post sleeves, or electrical boxes.

Stair treads and landings become slick during cleaning. Work from a stable dry position and preserve an exit route; do not clean yourself into a wet corner. Keep hoses out of the footpath.

After washing: prove finish readiness

Inspect only after drying

When the cleaner’s conditioning period has passed and the wood is dry enough to inspect, look under raking light:

all cleaner and slurry removed;

no gray stripes or pressure arcs;

no fuzzy fibers, splinters, or lifted grain;

no peeling coating left outside the intended restain system;

board gaps clear;

fasteners and repairs sound;

no biological film or grease remains;

color and absorption reasonably uniform for the chosen stain.

Raised fibers are a pressure-washing failure, not a texture to bury under stain. Let the wood meet sanding readiness, then lightly abrade only as the stain system directs and remove dust by its approved method. Lead rules apply if old painted coatings were disturbed.

Use the next coating’s readiness test

“Looks dry” is not a specification. The selected stain’s current data sheet decides acceptable wood moisture, weather window, surface temperature, rain-free interval, preparation chemistry, neutralization, sanding, and coat schedule. Use a calibrated moisture meter if it specifies a numeric moisture limit. Use a water-drop absorption check only if that manufacturer recognizes it.

Do not turn a generic calendar interval into permission. Shade, humidity, board thickness, end grain, trapped water, and weather change drying. If rails are ready but shaded stair stringers are not, the job is not ready.

The exact endpoint still belongs to the stain selected for this deck.

Close and document the job

Do not improvise the equipment closeout. Require the exact current machine/gun, wand, and tip/nozzle manuals to agree on shutdown, stored-pressure control, disassembly, rinse, care, and storage; perform only their authorized procedure. Handle leftover cleaner and captured runoff per label/SDS and local rules. Record the cleaner, batch, dilution, application method, test-section result, pressure-washer configuration, nozzle, observed wood response, wash date, weather, and readiness evidence. That record is what makes a failed stain diagnosable later.

What goes wrong — and the recovery

Wood is fuzzy after drying. Pressure, proximity, nozzle, dwell, or repeated passes exceeded the fibers’ tolerance. Stop pressure work. Let the deck reach sanding readiness, abrade as the stain maker permits, and re-test a gentler setup.

Dark and light stripes appear. Inconsistent distance, speed, overlap, or fan orientation. Do not “even them out” by carving the light bands deeper. Let the section dry, assess remaining finish and fiber damage, then use the least destructive corrective method.

Cleaner dried on the boards. Section too large or conditions too fast. Follow the cleaner maker’s rewet/recovery instruction. Do not add stronger chemical or pressure.

Old stain remains in islands. The project may require a compatible stain remover rather than cleaner. Stop and use the coating system’s removal sequence; washing harder is not chemistry.

Water beads after the deck dries. Residual finish, cleaner, contamination, or wood condition may block absorption. Use the chosen stain maker’s diagnosis and readiness test; do not assume more pressure is the fix.

Delay coating until every area meets the stain specification.

Wand connection leaks. Leakage is a rejection signal, not a troubleshooting invitation. Do not solve an unknown M22 or “1/4-inch style” mismatch with force, extra tape, or improvised adapters.

The pressure stream caused a skin wound. Stop immediately and seek medical care; identify it as high-pressure injection even if the mark is tiny.

Should I use the 28470 hose wand or a pressure-washer wand?

Use the hose path when compatible chemistry and agitation can clean the deck without machine pressure. Use a pressure-washer wand only when the equipment, cleaner, old coating, wood, and stain instructions permit it and the complete test section stays sound.

Which pressure-washer wand fits?

28430 is the M22-style consumer lead; 28440 and 28450 are the official “1/4-inch style” professional leads. Exact thread/seal and tip compatibility still require verification. Never choose only by length.

What pressure, nozzle, and distance should I use?

The approved equipment and coating system plus the test section decide. This guide gives no universal numbers because wood species, weathering, machines, tips, and finishes differ.

Can I put GreenWater+ in the 28470 Soaper?

Not from current evidence. 28815-WPJ’s label/SDS and 28470’s chemical-compatibility/metering instructions are absent. Until both approve the pairing, use the cleaner’s specified applicator and reserve 28470 for clean-water rinse.

Is the free Pivot Jet in 28815-WPJ the 28470 PivotJet Pro?

The title says only “FREE Pivot Jet.” No model or Soaper feature may be inferred.

How long must the deck dry before staining?

Until it meets the selected stain’s current moisture/readiness and weather requirements across every board and assembly. A fixed number of hours is not portable across systems or conditions.

Is a water-drop test enough?

Only if the stain manufacturer recognizes it, and it does not replace a numeric moisture limit when the data sheet specifies one.

Can I pressure-wash composite decking?

Not from this wood guide. Follow the exact composite manufacturer’s limits and approved cleaner list.
