Separate four different studio actions

This guide covers:

trim: remove an uneven rim, flange, gallery, or excess edge;

fit: shave a lid/flange or mating clay feature through repeated trials;

pierce: open a vent, drain, lantern, spout, or decorative hole;

carve/incise: remove or displace a controlled line/field of clay.

It does not cover:

wheel trimming with loop/ribbon tools;

cutting a piece from the wheel with wire;

dry grinding/sanding;

firing, glaze fit, structural design, or food-safety acceptance.

Each action needs its own support, cut direction, and acceptance.

The catalog art suggests a tapered form only at art-observation level. Inspect the physical tool before planning a tip opening or close curve.

Exclude the 95460 from clay work

The 95460 is called a Loop Knife, but it is not the pottery loop/ribbon tool used on a turning wheel.

Its exact-model accepted listing grain is only high-carbon steel and 6.5-inch/165 mm overall length; its broader inside-sharpened ring, deflashing, farrier, handle, pick, and sharpening story remains family-level/flagged.

Nothing in its record makes it a clay cutter.

This store does not sell the required pottery loop/ribbon turning tool. Source one from a ceramics supplier when the job is turning/trimming, not cutting with the 40310.

Identify the clay system and state

clay/body name and batch;

grog/fiber/inclusion level if documented;

colorants/stains/slips already present;

thrown, slab-built, coil-built, cast, pressed, or other method;

moisture state through the wall;

prior joins/attachments;

intended firing/glaze/use requirements.

“Leather-hard” describes workable firmness, not one moisture percentage.

Test an inconspicuous allowance or matching witness:

it should support its form;

a controlled edge should cut rather than smear;

the surface should not powder;

pressure should not oval or collapse the wall;

the body should not chip brittlely.

If state varies, cover/rest/equalize through the studio method before precision work.

Keep silica-bearing dust out of the method

Many clay bodies contain crystalline silica, and dry cutting, sanding, grinding, or cleanup can make respirable dust.

This guide is intentionally a leather-hard, controlled-cut workflow.

Read the exact clay/glaze SDS and exposure assessment. Where occupational respirable crystalline silica applies, follow OSHA’s respirable crystalline silica standard for general industry, including required exposure controls and program obligations.

Use wet/HEPA or other SDS/program-approved cleanup. Do not dry sweep, brush powder into the air, or use compressed air.

If the piece has become dry enough to dust, stop and move to the studio’s dry-work controls rather than adding water blindly to fragile ware.

Inspect the ware before cutting

Under raking light, inspect:

existing rim/edge cracks;

S-cracks or drying checks;

weak seams/joins;

trapped support/form;

Mark pre-existing conditions.

Do not use trimming to erase a crack that requires structural/project disposition.

Determine where support can contact without embossing or contaminating the surface.

Inspect the 40310

Clean and inspect:

edge and point;

hardwood handle cracks/swelling;

unknown prior sharpening.

High-carbon steel and wet clay demand prompt compatible cleaning/drying.

Do not test sharpness with a finger.

Never bend it to match a surface.

Quarantine a loose, chipped, bent, heavily corroded, or uncertain knife.

Build support around the operation

Support the ware so cutting force does not distort it.

a ware board for broad forms;

a shaped foam/sand support or soft cradle when approved;

a clean turntable for rotation;

an internal hand/sponge/form only where the method keeps the hand clear of the edge;

sacrificial backing beneath a piercing site.

Keep the 40310’s point path visible.

Do not hold a closed vessel in one hand and drive the point toward the unseen palm.

Guard/park the knife before rotating, measuring, fitting, or moving the piece.

Lay out the keeper

For rims/fits, mark:

final level/height;

high and low zones;

For piercing/carving:

forbidden zones near joins/attachments;

front and back relationships.

Use compatible marks that do not contaminate clay or glaze.

Plan cut order so strong surrounding material remains while delicate openings are created.

Trim a rim without chasing it

Rotate the supported ware rather than twisting the wrist around it.

Take short slicing cuts from the high area toward the line. Keep the edge presentation consistent and reduce bite near final height.

Do not saw rapidly or lever the tip.

After one circuit:

mark remaining highs;

repeat only where proven.

Stop before the line. Finish through the studio’s specified rib/sponge/edge method.

Fit lids and galleries by witnessed transfer

Clean mating surfaces.

Place the lid/component gently, identify actual contact, remove it, and mark the high spot through a compatible method.

With the component supported, shave only the witness area in small controlled cuts.

guard the knife;

refit without forcing;

observe seating/clearance;

Do not run the knife blindly around the entire gallery. Clay removed from a noncontact area creates wobble.

Account for the project’s drying/firing movement; the 40310 record supplies no fit allowance.

Plan pierced openings as structure

Every opening weakens a wall before firing.

Make a matching witness first.

For a closed form, know exactly where the point will emerge and what backs it.

Use a punch/drill/cutter if the studio method calls for one. The 40310 is not automatically the best starter for every hole.

Pierce without blowing out the back

Support the site.

Use the physical 40310 tip only if it is sound and suitable by trial.

Make a light controlled entry, then enlarge through short slicing cuts inside the waste.

Work toward the final line while leaving bridges until the waste can be controlled.

Do not twist the point as a reamer or pry the center plug out.

Approach the back surface with reduced force. If the method allows access from both sides, register carefully and complete from the opposite face to reduce breakout.

Inspect for radial cracks after every opening.

Sequence repeating patterns

For lantern/perforated work:

prove one complete opening on witness ware;

mark centers/boundaries;

distribute starts before enlarging;

keep strong webs;

alternate around the form to avoid local weakening;

support near each cut;

stop when the body softens or dries unevenly;

inspect under transmitted/raking light.

The combined pattern, not just each opening, controls strength.

Incise and carve by depth hierarchy

Define whether the work is:

a surface line through slip;

relief/background removal;

deep structural carving.

Set boundaries and depth through the design/body method.

Make a light establishing line, then deepen only after checking grain-like inclusions, wall support, and visual result.

Use short controlled pulls so the point cannot run into adjacent design.

Clear crumbs with an approved brush/sponge only after parking the edge.

Do not repeatedly scratch a fuzzy line; recheck clay state and tool edge.

Protect slip, color, and surface

If a slip/engobe layer is present, confirm:

it is bonded enough to cut;

the cut is meant to expose the body;

crumbs will not smear contrast;

water will not bleed the line;

tool contamination will not transfer colors.

Work clean to dirty/color-dark as the studio plan requires.

Clean the 40310 between materials through a compatible method.

Do not claim the knife is chemically compatible with every stain, oxide, glaze, or cleaning agent.

Finish without erasing the cut

Knife first; minimal finishing second.

A barely damp sponge or specified smoothing tool can soften a burr, but excess water can:

swell the edge;

create uneven drying.

Use the least moisture/effect that meets the approved result.

Do not sponge a high ridge flat when it should have been trimmed; that creates a smooth bump.

Inspect front, back, and transmitted light where openings matter.

Stop for defects

Hold the piece when:

a crack radiates from a piercing;

a join opens;

wall visibly flexes;

the point reaches an unseen feature;

opening breaks its boundary;

rim/fitting goes below allowance;

clay state changes faster than work can be controlled.

Cover/equalize or transfer to authorized repair/disposition.

Do not conceal a crack with slip and continue.

Clean and store

Remove clay from the knife before it dries hard, using a safe compatible method.

Dry the high-carbon blade and hardwood handle promptly. Do not soak the joint or leave the knife in a wet sponge bucket.

Use only a verified protective treatment.

Guard individually and store dry/secured.

Clean the station through the studio dust-control method; never dry sweep clay crumbs/powder.

Record repeat work

body/batch and stage;

rim/fit/opening/carve sequence;

dust/cleanup controls;

Keep 95460 recorded only as the excluded name-collision model.

Manage a moisture-state pause

If the work stops before the pattern, rim, or fit is complete, do not leave one area exposed while the rest is covered without a studio reason.

clean loose crumbs through the wet-control method;

mark completed and open work;

support the form;

record current state/defects;

cover/equalize through the clay-body process;

clean/dry/guard 40310;

keep the piece identified.

On return, retest an allowance or matching witness.

If the clay is softer, restore support and use smaller cuts. If it has become brittle or dusty, do not resume the leather-hard procedure; enter the studio’s dry-work/exposure-controlled route.

Separate knife carving from wheel turning

The 40310 is useful when the operator cuts a stationary or hand-rotated piece.

A pottery loop/ribbon tool removes clay while a wheel rotates the ware and indexes the cut. That turning operation involves:

tool rest/hand presentation;

wall/foot thickness;

actual loop/ribbon geometry.

None is established for 40310 or 95460.

Do not hold the 40310 against a powered rotating pot as an improvised turning tool. Source the actual pottery equipment and instruction.

Keep wheel rotation stopped whenever this knife enters the work zone.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

95460 is issued as a pottery loop tool. Remove it; source a true ceramics loop/ribbon tool.

“Leather-hard” is treated as one number. Prove the actual body state.

The hidden palm backs a piercing. Use visible sacrificial support.

A lid is shaved all around. Mark actual contact and remove only witness highs.

Dry clay powders. Stop and enter the silica/dry-work control route.

The point is twisted to enlarge a hole. Slice waste or use the proper cutter.

Sponge water erases detail. Reduce moisture and finish after controlled cutting.

Clay dries on high-carbon steel. Clean/dry promptly.

40310 flex is assumed from trade category. Keep hard/soft temper unresolved.
