Honest scope: this guide cuts the trim panel's flexible cover system—vinyl, cloth, backing, scrim, or an approved soft laminate—not its rigid substrate. Plywood, hardboard, fiberglass, plastic, metal, composite, structure, and installed parts require another process. Work begins with a new loose panel or one already removed and released to the bench. This guide does not authorize removal, disconnection, modification, installation, or return-to-service of panels, SRS/restraints, electrical/control systems, steering, fuel, hull fittings, fire protection, flotation, or structure.
Define the material system before making a pattern
“Vinyl-faced” and “cloth-faced” describe only the visible layer. The knife meets a stack, and the stack determines whether the marked shape remains the same after it is released.
Loose single-layer covering
A loose cover can be cut on a sacrificial board before adhesive, foam, or substrate enters the assembly. Establish face, grain or stretch direction, repeat, and the meaning of every line. Vinyl may stretch differently across and along the roll; cloth may have nap, a one-way motif, or a weave that distorts off square. The material specification or approved sample—not this guide—owns orientation.
Covering with backing, scrim, or sew foam
A backed vinyl, laminated cloth, foam-backed material, or cover-plus-scrim behaves as a composite. Do not tension the face independently. Support the complete stack neutral and uncompressed, and qualify scrap containing every layer. Neither knife receives a laminate-thickness or layer-count rating. If the stack will not shear under controlled hand force, stop and route the process.
Covering already bonded to a loose panel
This guide permits exterior trimming or an explicitly drawn opening on a loose, stable bench assembly only at its documented trim stage. The adhesive maker and traveler own open time, cure, repositionability, cleaner compatibility, and bond acceptance; this page supplies no values.
Map substrate, foam, hardware, and every void under the stroke. A square point is not substrate-proof, and the 55500 tip can reach through the cover. If a shield cannot separate blade and finished substrate, change the setup or stop.
Existing covering used as a pattern
An old skin may be stretched, shrunk, torn, previously trimmed, or permanently shaped. Compare it with the drawing, master, opposite-hand part, substrate, and seam/wrap system. Flatten without stretching and record missing edges before tracing.
Unknown material, unknown residue, delamination, brittle backing, embedded wire, hard reinforcement, or contamination stops the cut pending material/process disposition.
Freeze the system decisions the knife cannot make
The cut line is downstream of design and installation decisions. Do not let the blade silently decide them.
Identify the panel and hand. Record vehicle/vessel, location, revision, left/right or port/starboard, face side, and orientation. Mark “up,” “forward,” or another unambiguous direction on the waste or pattern.
Name every line. A pattern can contain a finished edge, stitch line, seam line, fold line, wrap line, adhesive boundary, substrate edge, relief line, hardware center, and final cut line. Color or label them so the cutter cannot confuse one with another.
Use only documented allowances. Wrap depth around a substrate, sew allowance at a joined cover, pull allowance over foam, and relief length around a corner belong to the approved trim system. This guide invents no default number.
Resolve edge treatment. A raw hidden wrap, sewn edge, bound edge, welt, piping, heat-formed edge, clipped return, and adhesive-only return are different systems. Confirm the one being built before cutting.
Resolve openings. A fastener clearance, speaker opening, vent, switch, cup holder, latch, handle, or service cutout may be cut in the loose skin, after bonding, after trial fitting, or never by hand knife. The drawing or process plan decides the stage.
Resolve safety and service zones. Where a panel interfaces with restraints, controls, wiring, sensors, fire suppression, flotation, hull penetration, or another controlled system, its service procedure owns design, disassembly, cutting restrictions, inspection, and return. This guide confers no approval.
For repeated work, record material lot, pattern revision, direction, hand, allowance source, selected knife, qualification, and first-piece inspection. Repetition magnifies a layout error.
Layout: preserve appearance before preserving the line
Set the face and direction
View vinyl grain and cloth nap under representative light. Find the controlling stripe, plaid, texture, perforation, emboss, or motif. Lay meeting companion panels as a set so direction and repeat remain deliberate.
Do not trust a roll edge as square. Establish the axis from the approved pattern and material specification. Orient directional stretch to the system rule; this guide declares none.
Register handed and companion parts
Mark face-up/face-down and left/right or port/starboard before tracing. A template that is not designed to flip can produce two left-hand skins. Place mirrored parts together, verify their identifiers, and check that visible repeats meet as the design requires.
Transfer the complete pattern
Use a marker proved on scrap not to bleed, migrate, emboss, damage coating, or remain visible.

Keep marks off the visible face unless allowed. Do not cut away the only identifier before inspection.
Nest without distorting
Condition rolled material as approved and support the entire pattern area. Prevent overhang from pulling grain or foam backing from sagging. Weight outside the knife lane; never use the support hand as a moving pattern weight.
Layout gate: do not cut until face, direction, hand, repeat, line meanings, allowances, openings, pattern revision, support, and waste side are all explicit.

The 60090 leads. Its square-ended, 4-inch standard-gauge blade suits controlled draws and close edge trimming. The square geometry removes a forward point, but both corners and the edge can still mark foam or substrate.
The 55500 joins only where geometry needs a point: a verified interior start, acute corner, or precise short cut.
Neither knife is given a material-capacity claim. Blade length is geometry and stroke—not proof that a knife can cut a certain cover thickness, laminate, stack, or substrate.
Build support so the cut cannot reach the wrong thing
The support is part of the cutting system.
For loose covering
Use a flat sacrificial board larger than the stroke, free of metal and hidden production pieces. Keep the pattern/straightedge on the keep side where practical and weights beyond the blade path. Plan the endpoint after resistance disappears.
For soft-backed laminates
Support the laminate continuously and neutrally. A gap lets the blade compress foam before severing; a hard ridge telegraphs into the cut. Qualify support and stack together.
For a covering on a loose rigid panel
Nest the panel so it cannot rock, spring, or rotate. Protect the overrun path with a removable shield that cannot slip, scratch, become trapped, or conceal the line. Never use wiring, hardware, a finished edge, or a helper's hand as a blade stop.
If access requires holding the panel in the air, reaching behind it blindly, cutting toward the body, or balancing it on an edge, the bench setup is incomplete. Refixture it.
Inspect the knives and set the PPE boundary
These are fixed, maintained high-carbon-steel knives. Before use:
confirm the exact model and pattern;
inspect blade and corners for chips, cracks, bends, corrosion, burrs, or blue/overheated areas;
inspect the handle, ferrule, and blade joint for splits, looseness, contamination, raised hardware, or movement;
prove the edge on scrap from the actual material stack;
clean and dry the blade with a method compatible with the finish material;
prepare a rigid protected laydown or sheath before the cut begins.
Preserve edge geometry with the approved sharpening method.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 bases hand protection on the task, conditions, duration, and hazards. Use task-compatible cut protection where required, but redesign any setup in which a glove becomes the blade stop or prevents control. Keep both hands out of the edge path.
Use side-protected safety glasses where hard inclusions, hardware removal, brittle fragments, or sharpening can eject particles, consistent with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133. Control loose clothing, jewelry, and hair; wear stable closed footwear. Other protection comes from the process hazard assessment and SDS.
Cut away from the torso, legs, support hand, and every other person. If a second person helps support a large panel, agree on hand zones and a stop word; either person may stop, and only the cutter starts.
Cut the loose covering
Step 1 — Qualify the exact stack
Make a representative scrap cut through the same face, backing, foam or scrim, material orientation, and support planned for the part. Look for a clean shear without face stretch, backing tear, edge curl, adhesive loading, crushed foam, or rising force. A pass on plain vinyl does not qualify backed vinyl; a pass on dry stock does not qualify a tacky laminate.
Step 2 — Plan the order
Cut long stable boundaries before small free flaps make the piece hard to hold, but preserve enough surrounding material to keep direction and registration. Leave interior openings until the part remains fully supported unless the approved process specifies another order.
Step 3 — Stage an edge start for the 60090
Where the line reaches an outside waste edge, begin with the 60090. Set the blade low so the long edge slices instead of pushing a bow wave. Load only the length needed for control. Draw smoothly along the waste side of the approved line.
Against a straightedge, keep side pressure light and steady. Do not lever the blade into the guide or let the sharpened corner climb it. The guide establishes direction; the edge still performs the cut.
Step 4 — Carry straights and gentle curves
Use continuous draws where the line and body position allow them. On a gentle curve, rotate and re-support the material rather than steering through wrist twist. Several overlapping tangent slices are better than one forced arc. Keep the waste supported so it neither pulls the cut open nor drags the pattern off line.
If a second pass is required, return to the identical supported line. Multiple offset passes make a scalloped edge and silently remove allowance.
Step 5 — Change to the 55500 only for point work
For an approved interior opening, place the work flat over sacrificial support and confirm both sides of the start point. Keep the support hand behind the point. Pierce only enough to establish the cut, lower the blade into a slicing attitude, and carry the line. Withdraw before repositioning.
At an inside corner, finish the first line to the corner, withdraw, rotate the work, and begin the second line from a controlled point start. Do not pivot or pry the 55500 tip in the material. Its point is a cutting feature, not a compass pin.
For a closed opening, rough inside the final boundary if the process requires a trial fit, then approach the approved line in controlled finish cuts. Do not enlarge an opening merely because the hardware almost fits; first verify hardware identity, orientation, and pattern revision.
Step 6 — Separate waste by cutting, not tearing
When a bridge of backing or thread remains, lay the piece flat and sever it. Pulling the offcut can run a yarn, distort vinyl, delaminate the backing, or tear into the keep side.
Step 7 — Inspect before lifting
Check cut perimeter, grain/nap, motif, hand, allowance, match marks, notches, openings, and part identity while the original layout is still visible. Mark first-piece acceptance or quarantine before stacking the part.
Trim a bonded covering on a loose panel
This is a trim operation, not permission to install or service the panel.
Verify the trim stage. Confirm trimming will not pull, print, or delaminate the documented bond.
Fixture and map. Stabilize the loose panel; locate every hard insert, edge, opening, foam transition, and show surface.
Define the datum. Know whether the covering finishes flush, wraps around, stops before a seam, or retains a specified return. Do not substitute the visible substrate edge for the drawing.
Protect the keep side. Place the approved shield or backer along the full travel and overrun path. If it hides the root or can slip, redesign the protection.
Cut conservatively. Use the 60090 low and in short draws, leaving margin until material response is understood; finish progressively to the datum, never past it.
Use the 55500 only for a verified point requirement. An interior opening or acute corner may justify it; blind plunge cutting does not.
Treat corners and reliefs separately. Approach from stable waste, stop short, test, and extend only as the drawing permits; this guide supplies no relief geometry.
Contain and inspect. Keep offcuts from cavities, mechanisms, wire paths, drains, and adhesive. Check substrate, foam, bond, wraps, edges, corners, marks, and debris.
What goes wrong—and the fix

The core diagnostic is: rising force means the qualified process has changed. Stop before extra force converts a material or edge problem into a cut hand or ruined panel.
Final inspection, cleanup, and knife care
Inspect the piece against the current pattern or drawing, not against the offcut.
correct panel identity, revision, hand, face, and orientation;
complete perimeter and every opening;
required wrap, seam, stitch, and relief allowances remain;
grain, nap, stretch direction, repeat, and companion-part registration;
no pulled yarns, tears, scallops, corner mouths, cut foam, substrate marks, bond lift, contamination, or lost match marks;
all tools, weights, shields, backing pieces, and offcuts accounted for.
Store accepted pieces flat or in the approved rack so they do not stretch, crease, curl, or lose identification. Quarantine defects visibly; do not send a questionable cover downstream for an installer to “make work.”
Remove residue from each knife without wiping toward the edge. Inspect the complete blade for new damage. Clean and dry the high-carbon steel. Apply only a storage treatment compatible with the next finish material, and remove it before use. Protect the fixed blade in its controlled storage position. Buyer tests—the honest two-knife answer
Outside-edge pattern cutting? Lead with the 60090.
Protecting a lower layer? Prefer the 60090 where geometry permits, plus sacrificial support or a shield; its square end is not a depth stop.
History—the shoe-bench patterns that followed soft goods into transport
Neither pattern was invented for cars or boats, and the record does not credit Hyde with inventing either. The square point was already a shoemaker's form: a long maintained edge and blunt end for flexible sheet over another layer. New England shoe factories created demand for dedicated bench knives. Hyde history describes Isaac P. Hyde learning knife making in Southbridge, then supplying shoe and textile factories from his own shop in the early-to-mid 1870s. They survived together because they answer opposite geometry. As soft-goods skills moved into carriage, automotive, and marine upholstery, the material problem stayed recognizable: mark flexible cover, support it, slice to pattern, preserve what lies below, and use a point only where required.
The 60090 is the maintained square-point production knife adapted to the broad flexible-sheet task; the 55500 is the surviving point-work partner. This guide does not imply one.
