How to Tape and Finish Drywall Joints

Job: turn a room of hung drywall sheets into one continuous, paintable surface — joints, corners, and screw heads all invisible.

Time: three to four days elapsed for a room: three coats, and with ready-mixed compound each coat dries overnight. Hands-on time is a few hours per coat. Setting compound can compress the calendar; nothing compresses the sequence.

Difficulty: the most sequence-bound job in this catalog. No single stroke is hard; the discipline is three coats, each wider and thinner than the last, each fully dry before the next. The compound will teach you if you let it.

Everything else: joint compound (all-purpose for taping, all-purpose or lightweight topping for finishing; setting-type for pre-fills and if you choose mesh — Step 2), paper joint tape, mesh tape if the decision goes that way, 150–220 grit sanding screens, pole sander and sanding sponge, work lamp for raking light, pencil (never a pen — ink bleeds through paint), drop cloths, and patience measured in overnights.

Before the first coat

Walk every joint and every screw before you open the bucket. Run the 6" knife flat over each fastener: a metallic *click* means a screw head is proud, and it must be driven slightly below flush now — one proud screw ruins three coats of work over it. Check that all screws dimple the paper without breaking it (a broken-paper screw holds nothing; add another beside it). Pre-fill any gap between sheets wider than about 1/4" with setting compound and let it harden — tape bridging a canyon of soft mud is the crack you'll be repairing next year.

Paper or mesh — decided honestly. This is the aisle's oldest argument, and the answer is a split decision, not a preference:

Paper tape is stronger — it doesn't stretch, so a taped joint moves as one piece. It's the only correct choice for inside corners (it creases to a true 90°) and the default for every flat joint. It works under any compound. Its cost: it must be bedded in mud, which is a skill (Step 4), and badly bedded paper bubbles.

Mesh tape is self-adhesive fiberglass — stick it on and mud over it, no bedding skill required. But fiberglass stretches, and a stretched joint cracks. The honest rule the trade converged on: mesh only with setting-type compound, which is hard enough to make up for mesh's give. Mesh with soft all-purpose mud is the combination behind most cracked DIY joints. Mesh earns its keep on small repairs and flat joints when you're already mixing hot mud; paper everywhere else, and paper always in corners.

Thin the mud for taping. For the tape coat, all-purpose compound loosened with a little water (mixed to thick-yogurt consistency) flows under tape and grabs it. Load the pan half-full and keep the rim scraped — dried crumbs off the rim are what put tram-lines in your strokes.

Coat one — the tape coat (5–6" knife)

Bed the flats: mud first, never tape on a dry joint. Butter the joint with a generous bed of compound about 1/8" thick and slightly wider than the tape, using the 6" knife. The bed is the glue — tape's strength comes entirely from the compound gripping both faces of it.

Embed the tape without bubbles — leave mud UNDER it. Press the paper tape into the bed by hand, centered on the seam. Then hold the knife at about 45° and wipe from the center of the run toward each end, firm and smooth, squeezing out the excess. Here is the feel that separates good tape from bubbled tape: you are wiping out the *excess*, not all of it. Leave a thin, continuous film — about 1/16" — of compound under the tape. Squeeze it dry-tight against the board and you've starved it: starved tape has nothing holding it, and it bubbles and peels when the next coat wets it. If an edge lifts or a blister appears as you wipe, lift the tape back to there, re-butter, re-lay. Cheap now, expensive later. Then a thin skim of mud over the top of the tape so it dries buried, not naked.

Inside corners: fold, bed, and — the rule that saves you — one side at a time. Crease the paper tape along its factory center line, butter both walls of the corner, press the folded tape in, and wipe each side smooth. From here on, the standing rule: finish one side of a corner per coat. Coat the left face today, the right face tomorrow with the next coat's work. The why is mechanical: a knife smoothing one face inevitably gouges its corner into the opposite face if that face is wet. Alternating sides costs nothing (you're coming back tomorrow anyway) and produces crisp corners without a single dug track.

Spot the fasteners — in rows, like a farmer. Every screw dimple gets two perpendicular strokes of the 6" knife: one to fill, one to shave flush. Don't dab them individually like polka dots; run each vertical row of screws as one rhythm, top to bottom. Fastener spotting gets a pass in all three coats — compound shrinks as it dries, and a dimple filled once dries back into a dimple.

Outside corners get metal or vinyl corner bead, not tape — fastened straight, then mudded like a joint, the bead's raised nose serving as one screed rail for your knife and the wall as the other.

Coat two — the fill coat (8–10" knife)

Wider, thinner, and dead flat — and now the butt-joint truth. After the tape coat dries overnight, scrape off nibs and ridges with the dry knife (they slice off clean — seconds, no sanding), then run the fill coat with the 8–10" knife, feathering a few inches past the tape coat's edges on every run. On tapered joints — the factory long edges, which are recessed by design — your job is simply to fill the valley flush; the taper hides the tape below the wall's plane, and the wide knife riding both shoulders screeds it flat automatically. Butt joints — the cut ends, no recess — are the honest problem of this trade: the tape sits ON the plane of the wall, so everything covering it is above plane. You cannot avoid a crown on a butt joint; you can only make it too gradual for the eye to catch. Build the fill as two wide wings, one on each side of the tape, keeping the mud LEAN directly over the tape's center line, and feather the total width out — this coat perhaps 12–14" total, on the way to two feet by the end. Check your work by standing the 12" knife across the joint like a straightedge: you're looking for a gentle rock, not a teeter. A butt joint finished as narrow as a tapered joint reads as a vertical hump at every raking light, forever.

Corners, side two; fasteners, pass two. Coat the corner faces you skipped in coat one. Run all the fastener rows again — yesterday's fills have shrunk back, exactly as promised.

Coat three — the skim coat (12" knife)

The finish pass: thinnest coat, widest feather. Thin the compound slightly looser than the fill coat (lightweight topping shines here — it spreads and sands like it's on your side). With the 12" knife, run every joint with a tight skim that extends past the fill coat's edges — tapered joints finishing around 12–14" wide, butt joints out to 20–24". Pressure firm, blade high-angle, leaving only enough mud to erase the fill coat's edges and tool marks. The rule of the whole system in one line: each coat's job is to hide the edges of the coat before it.

Corners' remaining faces, fasteners' final pass — as continuous bands. Third and last pass over every screw row, and by now each row should be one smooth shallow band, not a chain of spots. Anything still ticking your knife gets marked in pencil for the sanding step.

Sand to finish — without fuzzing the paper. 150–220 grit on a pole sander for the field of every joint, light pressure, long strokes along the joint's direction, with the sanding sponge for corners and tight spots. The target is edges and tool marks — NOT the center of the joint, where the tape lies shallow. The moment you see fibers rise or the surface scuffs woolly, you've left compound and hit drywall face paper: stop there. Fuzzed paper and scratched tape telegraph through paint, and the repair is another skim coat — meaning the cheapest sanding is the least sanding. If you skimmed tight, this whole step is dust management, not shaping.

Raking light, then prime — and let the primer be your final inspector. Lamp low across every joint; pencil-mark and touch up whatever it finds with a tight pass of the 12" knife (spot-fixes dry in an hour). Then prime the whole wall with drywall primer (PVA-class). Raw compound and drywall paper drink paint at different rates — unprimed joints flash as dull stripes through the finish coat. The primer coat is also the first time you see the wall in one uniform color: walk it with the raking light one final time, and fix now what you find, because paint magnifies everything primer reveals.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

Bubbled or blistered tape. Starved of compound — bedded on too thin a layer, or wiped too dry (Step 5). Small blister: slice it open with a utility knife, work compound behind it, press flat, re-skim. A long lifted run: cut it out entirely, re-bed, re-tape. Never mud over a bubble hoping to bury it; unattached tape moves, and moving tape cracks.

For the fixable kinds: rake out the loose material, re-tape the corner with paper, and finish in thin one-side-at-a-time coats.

Visible butt-joint crowns. The hump appears in afternoon side-light down the wall. The cause is always the same: not feathered wide enough. The fix is honest and unglamorous: skim two more wings, each pass wider, until the straightedge rocks gently over two feet — and next room, treat every butt joint as a two-foot-wide commitment from coat one.

Over-sanding. Fuzzy scuffed paper halos around the joints, or tape showing gray through the compound. Stop sanding — no grit fixes what grit caused. Seal fuzzed areas (a coat of primer stiffens the fibers), skim the damage with a tight pass, then sand that, lightly, with the pole for flatness rather than pressure for speed.

Every joint reappeared after painting. Flashing — the joints were sound but unprimed (Step 14), or the compound was sanded glassy while the paper stayed matte. One full coat of drywall primer and a repaint solves it; there was never anything wrong with your taping.

The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)

Drywall is older than its reputation: Augustine Sackett patented a plaster-cored, paper-faced board in 1894, and U.S. Gypsum refined it into Sheetrock around 1916. For decades almost nobody wanted it — a wall you nailed up in sheets read as cheap against real troweled plaster. Two things changed that: the wartime and postwar building booms, which could not wait weeks for plaster to cure, and — the part that matters to this guide — the maturing of the joint system itself: the factory-tapered edge, paper tape, and joint compound, developed through the 1910s–40s, which let flat sheets present as one seamless monolithic wall.
