How to Stock the SuperFlexx™ Counter Display
This guide therefore does not name an assortment, assign a knife to a display position, or imply that model 49600 is current or available. It teaches the dealer workflow in full and marks the exact evidence that must exist before product reaches the sales counter.

Doer: a paint-store, hardware-store, dealer, or other retail operator. This is not an end-user wall-repair job. A countertop merchandiser is selling infrastructure; the knives it may contain are separate products with separate working applications.
Time: one controlled receiving and evidence-capture session before any stocking, then the store's chosen observation and replenishment cadence. No setup-time, selling-life, reorder interval, or program duration is asserted for the 49600.
Difficulty: operationally straightforward once the evidence is complete; impossible to execute correctly while the assortment, counts, fixture, planogram, refill route, or lifecycle remains unknown.

The decision before the carton is opened
Do not treat a purchase order, a store title, or the words “6 SKU SuperFlexx™” as a planogram. The title proves that the listing is planned around six distinct SKUs. It does not prove which six, whether the shipment contains inventory, how many units belong in each position, what the fixture is made from, how much counter it occupies, whether it refills from open stock, or whether Hyde still supports the program.
That distinction is commercially load-bearing. If the unit is a stocked ship-and-set display, the dealer is receiving inventory and fixture together. If it is an empty permanent rack, the dealer is receiving furniture that cannot sell until a separate inventory order lands. If it is a complete-unit-reorder program, an open-stock refill procedure would be wrong. If it is meant to refill from individually orderable products, reordering the complete fixture may strand duplicate furniture.
The rule is therefore simple:
Six evidence gates passed: authorize a controlled placement test.
Observed shipment conflicts with the current program document: quarantine the unit as an exception; do not “make it work” by filling holes with plausible neighbors.
Hyde cannot confirm a current program or supported disposition: do not represent the listing as live, current, orderable, or refillable. Route the commercial decision to the dealer/program owner.
The six evidence gates
“Probably” is not a fourth status.

All six gates precede stocking. Gate 6 is not a task for the first stockout: a display should not be launched without knowing how it remains truthful after the first sale.
Receiving and quarantine — preserve the evidence before arranging anything
Create the receiving record
Before cutting tape, open a record keyed to the purchase order, supplier, received date, location, carton count, and the exact model printed on the shipping label. Photograph every carton face, product label, lot or revision mark, packing-list pouch, damage, and carrier exception. Keep the original files; do not rely on compressed images pasted into a chat.
If no external label names 49600, stop. Do not let the store title supply identity to an anonymous carton. Record the mismatch and hold the shipment for vendor confirmation.
Move the shipment into a controlled hold
Place it in a receiving area marked DO NOT STOCK — MODEL 49600 EVIDENCE HOLD. Keep it separated from open-stock putty knives and other displays. A mixed receiving bench is how a plausible knife becomes an invented display member.
Preserve the shipping carton, inserts, headers, dividers, labels, instruction sheets, price cards, and even apparently blank separators until reconciliation is complete. A printed position code on disposable packaging may be the only surviving planogram evidence.
Open once, in sequence
Record an uninterrupted opening pass or a numbered photo sequence:
unopened carton and seal;
label and packing-list pouch;
top layer before removal;
every removed component in removal order;
all fixture parts laid out without assembly;
all sellable units grouped by their printed model identity;
all instructions, headers, tags, price cards, clips, inserts, and fasteners;
empty carton and remaining voids.
Do not assemble by intuition during this pass. Do not tear off an instruction panel to make the carton open faster. Do not merge product from store stock into a short shipment.
Count at two grains
First count distinct printed model identities. The expected program claim is six SKUs; anything other than six distinct documented sellable identities is a CONFLICT, not permission to reinterpret the title.
Then count units per printed model identity and calculate the physical total. Separate sellable units from samples, display-only cards, and damaged goods. Have a second person recount or use a blind recount sheet before comparing totals. A second count that merely copies the first worksheet is not independent evidence.
The current authored denominator stays:

Reconcile three sources, not one
Build one exception table with a row per observed printed model:

The packing list proves what was said to ship. The physical count proves what arrived. The planogram proves what the fixture is supposed to carry. Stocking is authorized only when those three accounts agree or a documented vendor correction resolves the difference.
Inspect the fixture without inventing its build
Only after the contents are isolated should the fixture be assembled according to its bound instruction. Photograph the assembly sequence, completed front, rear, both sides, base, joins, product-retention features, labels, and any position codes. Measure assembled width, depth, and height; measure the actual counter-contact footprint rather than the widest header alone. Record the units.
Test stability first empty, then with only the documented load and arrangement. Do not lean, screw, tape, trim, ballast, or add hooks unless the current instruction authorizes that alteration.
Quarantine remains in force if the fixture rocks, collapses, sheds parts, obscures required labels, presents a sharp edge, cannot retain the documented products, or requires an undocumented field modification.
The evidence packet that releases the hold
One operator should be able to open a single folder and answer every buying, stocking, and refill question without relying on memory. Minimum packet:
current program/lifecycle source naming 49600, with source, date, and version;
purchase order, order acknowledgement, packing list, and receiving date;
carton-label and opening photo sequence;
six-row contents-and-count reconciliation;
total physical piece count and independent recount sign-off;
current assembly instruction;
measured fixture dimensions and counter footprint;
current planogram with every position/facing bound to a printed model;
current open-stock refill map or explicit complete-unit-reorder/no-refill instruction;
price, landed-cost, order-unit, minimum, freight, allowance, return, and damage terms used in the economics;
exception log and vendor resolutions;
person and date authorizing release from quarantine.
No packet item needs to be public. It needs to be retrievable, exact, and bound to this program.
Decide whether the display earns the counter
Passing the evidence gates makes the program executable; it does not make the economics good. Counter space is scarce selling capacity. Compare the display with what it displaces using the same window and the same cost rules.
Establish the baseline before placement
Record the proposed counter zone, its measured usable footprint, the product or function currently occupying it, and baseline transactions, units, net sales, gross-margin dollars, and labor burden for the store's chosen comparison window. Photograph the zone. If the display would merely move existing knife sales from the aisle to the counter, the useful question is incremental margin, not gross counter sales.
Set the decision rules before results exist:
minimum acceptable gross-margin dollars per unit of counter footprint;
minimum acceptable total and per-SKU sell-through;
maximum tolerated stockout and picked-over-display time;
maximum replenishment labor;
test start, review dates, and final decision date;
treatment of returns, damage, theft/shrink, discounts, fixture cost, and vendor allowances;
This guide supplies no universal threshold. A rural paint counter, an urban hardware register, and a wholesale will-call desk have different traffic and margins. The discipline is a frozen rule, not a borrowed number.
Use economics that survive scrutiny
Net sales = actual sales less discounts and returns.
Gross-margin dollars = net sales less the landed cost of sold inventory under the store's accounting policy.
Margin velocity = gross-margin dollars divided by the measured counter footprint and the observation time.
Unit sell-through = units sold divided by units available to sell during the same window.
Per-SKU weeks of supply = sellable on-hand divided by that SKU's observed average weekly unit sales; report not estimable before enough sales exist rather than forcing a number.
Stockout exposure = recorded out-of-stock observation intervals divided by total observation intervals, by exact SKU.
Attachment rate = transactions containing a display SKU divided by the store's predeclared eligible transaction denominator. Define “eligible” before the test.
Incremental effect = counter-display result compared with the predeclared baseline or control, net of sales merely transferred from the regular aisle.
Report total display performance and every documented SKU separately. A healthy total can hide one dead facing and one chronic stockout. Six positions are an assortment, not a single blended product.
Placement — make the test visible without making the counter worse
Choose the site only after the footprint is measured. A useful counter position is customer-visible, reachable during the transaction, readable without turning the fixture, and close enough to the relevant conversation that a clerk can use it as a selection aid. It is not behind the clerk, buried under flyers, below a projecting counter lip, or on the far side of unrelated impulse goods.
The position must also remain operational:
the fixture sits level and stable within its documented orientation;
no part intrudes into an aisle, accessible customer route, register work area, payment terminal, bagging zone, emergency equipment, or required notice;
customers can remove a unit without destabilizing the fixture or reaching across the clerk;
price and model labels remain visible after units sell down;
the counter can still be cleaned without soaking or deforming an unverified fixture material;
camera, theft-control, and store-safety requirements are satisfied;
the regular open-stock location remains findable if the display is a secondary placement.
Photograph the installed position from the customer approach, customer standing point, clerk position, and overhead footprint. Those views make relocation decisions evidence-based rather than anecdotal.
Stocking — only after all six gates pass
Freeze the verified planogram
Create a six-row stocking sheet from the current source. Each row names the exact printed model, exact position, initial quantity, facing quantity, back-stock quantity, selling price source, and replenishment route. Version and date the sheet. If a future source changes one row, issue a new version; do not silently edit the old record.
This guide deliberately contains no six-row assortment. The first valid one comes from the evidence packet, not from prose.
Load the documented product, in the documented position
Handle only sellable units. Match the printed model on the product package to the planogram row and fixture position before loading. Count into the position, then count what remains in back stock. A position that holds a package physically is not thereby compatible.
fill an empty position with the nearest width;
substitute a standard-flex or ExtraFlex™ product under a SuperFlexx™ label;
combine carbon and stainless identities because the store's naming is ambiguous;
change facing counts to make the display look symmetrical;
peel or cover a printed model label to accommodate a substitute;
use an unlabeled sample as sellable stock.
The putty-knives line documents a real naming ambiguity: this store applies SuperFlexx™ wording across more than one product family while Hyde's own catalog distinguishes SuperFlexx™ and ExtraFlex™ claims.
Price at the sellable-unit grain
Each product position needs the correct sellable-unit price and machine-readable identity. Confirm register scan against the printed product, displayed price, and receipt before launch. Test one unit from every documented position without completing a sale if store procedure allows; otherwise use the store's controlled price-verification method.
Do not divide the fixture purchase price by a guessed piece count.
Final opening count and release
Immediately before the display becomes customer-accessible:
recount every position;
reconcile display plus back stock to accepted receipt less documented damage;
confirm every position/model/price;
photograph the full front and all labels;
record the opening timestamp and operator;
That operating status does not make model 49600 generally current or available. It proves only that this dealer released this verified physical unit on that date.
Facing and daily counter operation
A small display sells best when the choice remains legible. Face packages consistently to the verified planogram, pull stock forward without changing position assignments, remove damaged or shopworn packages from sale, and keep labels visible. Dust and clutter are operational signals: the fixture is no longer being managed.
At each store-defined observation:
record on-hand by exact displayed model and back-stock location;
record any zero position, wrong-position unit, price mismatch, damage, return, or customer confusion;
restore the documented facing without borrowing from another position;
note whether counter staff had to explain a naming or selection problem;
reconcile units sold to inventory movement rather than estimating by visual fullness;
capture a consistent front photo so picked-over time can be measured.
Never use “the display looked full” as an inventory record. Duplicate facings and unequal starting counts can hide depletion. Count models.
Replenishment — the display position is not the order key
Restock only through Gate 6's verified route.
If the program refills from open stock
Read the empty or low position's exact model from the frozen planogram.
Confirm the printed model on back stock or incoming open stock.
Confirm current order unit, sellable-unit quantity, price, and lifecycle in the dealer system.
Move the documented quantity into the documented position.
Record display on-hand, back-stock on-hand, and any order placed.
Reconcile the movement before closing the count.
The position number, silhouette, handle color, width, and physical fit are secondary checks. None replaces the printed model key.
If the program reorders as a complete unit
Follow the confirmed complete-unit rule. Do not dismantle a new unit merely to top off an old one unless the program explicitly allows that practice and the inventory accounting remains exact. Decide in advance how duplicate fixtures, residual stock, and the old unit are handled.
Stop that position and escalate the assortment exception. Do not substitute a neighbor, even one that looks better commercially, until a new program source revises the planogram and labels. A width, flex, steel, grind, or series change changes the job the knife performs; the adjacent product is not a cosmetic swap.
If no current refill source exists, the display may have reached its supported end even while stock remains. Manage the remaining verified products as their own inventory; do not imply the fixture is an active program.
Sell-through review — read the assortment, not just the total
At each predeclared review, ask:
Is margin velocity above the frozen counter-space threshold?
Did total knife sales rise, or did sales move from aisle to counter?
Which exact positions sold, stalled, or stocked out?
Did a zero position suppress neighboring sales or make selection unintelligible?
Did the display create add-on transactions with the intended eligible basket?
How much labor did counting, facing, exception handling, and reordering consume?
Did staff or customers confuse SuperFlexx™ and ExtraFlex™ naming?
Is the verified refill route still working?
Has any current program, price, product, or lifecycle source changed?
Do not “improve” the assortment during the test without versioning the intervention. Moving positions, changing counts, changing price, substituting a model, or relocating the fixture creates a new treatment. Record the date and restart or segment the comparison.
Continue when all evidence remains current, the refill loop closes, labels stay truthful, the fixture remains safe and serviceable, and the predeclared economics pass. Document the next review date.
Relocate when the assortment sells elsewhere but the chosen counter position fails visibility or operation. Record the old and new footprints, photographs, and change date. Do not claim a placement win until comparable post-move evidence exists.
Pause and quarantine affected stock when a model/label mismatch appears, the fixture becomes unstable or damaged, the refill map breaks, current terms disappear, or program status becomes uncertain.
close the test and record final counts and metrics;
remove all product and reconcile it by exact printed model;
move sellable units to a valid open-stock location only if their own current identity, price, and selling status are confirmed;
remove fixture-specific labels so an empty unit cannot advertise nonexistent stock;
photograph the empty fixture and vacated counter;
Do not label it recyclable, corrugated, plastic, metal, reusable, or returnable until physical evidence and the receiving program support that disposition.
Buyer tests — what should the operator do?
“A carton marked 49600 arrived, but there is no dealer sheet or planogram.”
Photograph it unopened, create the receiving record, and quarantine it.
“The carton contains six different knife packages, so we can arrange them by width.”
Six observed identities can help close the contents gate, but width order is still an invented planogram.
“The display is short one model, and a similar flexible knife fits the empty slot.”
Do not substitute. A neighboring knife may differ in flex, steel, grind, handle, or series even when the silhouette and width look right. Record shortage/wrong-item evidence and request a bound vendor resolution. Disposition: CONFLICT.
“The complete program document proves that it ships empty and refills from six open-stock models.”
Reconcile the document to the physical fixture, confirm all six current order keys and the exact planogram, measure the footprint, close the economics, and stock only after every gate passes. Empty is a valid ship-state when proved; it is not a defect.
“A customer wants one flexible knife for a wall patch.”
This is the wrong listing. Route the buyer to open-stock knife selection. The 49600 is the dealer fixture node, not a hand-tool substitute, and this guide does not nominate any of its unresolved contents.
“A blade carton is also called a merchandiser. Can we run it the same way?”
A blade merchandiser can retain useful consumable inventory when its display role is removed; a pure countertop fixture has no end-user working function apart from the stock it carries.
False neighbors — what the 49600 must not be confused with
A guessed six-knife kit: a kit is selected for a user's workflow; the 49600 is titled as a dealer merchandiser. Six plausible knives do not become its contents through coherence.
The current store's SuperFlexx™-titled pool: store naming crosses a documented SuperFlexx™/ExtraFlex™ family boundary. Search results are not a model-49600 packing list.
An empty generic six-slot rack: slot count and physical fit do not establish fixture identity, planogram, counts, labels, or commercial program.
A corrugated ship-and-set PDQ: that is one counter-display class. The 49600's construction and ship-state are unresolved, so the class term cannot be promoted to a unit fact.
A permanent open-stock rack: refillable furniture is another class. The 49600 refill model is unresolved.
A razor-blade merchandiser carton: its sellable blades retain use after the display framing is removed. That product/packaging relationship is false for an empty fixture.
A DTC multipack: the correct buyer for this job is a dealer operating retail space. Nothing in the present record establishes a consumer bundle, discount, or take-home set.
What goes wrong — and the correction
“Receiving threw away the carton.” Stop stocking. Preserve what remains, inventory every component, and request the missing planogram/program evidence from Hyde. Do not reconstruct printed evidence from memory.
“The display looks right, but the total count is off.” Unload and recount by printed model. Separate shortage, overage, damage, and non-sellable display pieces. A visually balanced fixture can still be financially and semantically wrong.
“One position sells out every week.” Record the stockout and lost exposure. Replenish through the verified map; do not steal facings from a slow neighbor mid-test unless the intervention is authorized, relabeled, and versioned.
“One position never sells.” Check visibility, price, label clarity, inventory accuracy, and staff explanation before blaming the product.
“The same-width knife fits.” Physical fit is not identity. Remove it, restore the correct item if available, and log how the substitution entered the system.
“The planogram and packing list disagree.” Quarantine the conflicting position or whole unit according to the scope of the conflict. Get a current written correction tied to 49600.
“The fixture is damaged or unstable.” Unload it and remove it from customer access. Follow the vendor/store damage route; do not improvise structural repairs on an unknown material or load system.
“The page exists, so the product must be current.” False.
The history footnote — the carton learned to become the counter
Counter displays are not the invention of one retailer or one tool company. They grew out of a durable packaging problem: move merchandise economically, then turn the shipping package into selling furniture without asking the merchant to build a display from scratch.
The paper trail is visible in American patents. Morris M. Einson's 1925 application, granted in 1928, described a shipping and display carton that served as both a stock container and an accessible vending rack ([U.S. Patent 1,670,498]( Daniel A. Larkin's 1939 application described corrugated packaging that concealed display graphics in transit and exposed them when the merchant converted the carton for counter use ([U.S. Patent 2,259,041]( Russell J. Hennessey's 1952 filing made the economics explicit: preserve a useful display as product sells down while using little counter space ([U.S. Patent 2,773,589](
Those patents are not an origin claim; they are dated evidence that the ship-stock-display problem was an established field of design. The Smithsonian's Fournet Drugstore Collection preserves later twentieth-century point-of-purchase displays and packaging as part of ordinary retail practice, including heavy-cardboard branded structures used to draw attention at the selling point (National Museum of American History collection guide).
The 49600 belongs to that long product class at title grain: a manufacturer-named countertop merchandiser. History explains the class; it cannot fill the evidence gaps of the model.
