Job: put fresh penetrating stain — or a semi-transparent or solid deck finish — onto a wood deck's boards, railings, balusters, and stairs, so it soaks in evenly, lasts, and doesn't peel.
Time: a weekend, but the labor is the small part. Washing (and any stripping) is a day; the wood then has to dry two or more dry-weather days; the staining itself is a few hours; the finish then cures a day or more before the furniture goes back. The whole job is gated by weather, not effort.
Difficulty: discipline, not skill. The two things that go wrong — lap marks and a tacky, over-applied film — are both cured by pace and restraint, not talent. The genuinely hard part is waiting for the wood to dry and catching a dry, out-of-direct-sun window to work in.
Read this before you start, not after (the safety fact that outranks the rest): an oil-stain-soaked rag, roller cover, or block can catch fire on its own — no spark, no flame, hours after you've packed up — because drying oils generate heat as they cure and a wadded pile insulates that heat to ignition. Never pile oily rags. The full disposal rule is the last step, and it is the one genuinely dangerous thing about this job.

Before you start: is the wood ready, and what are you putting on it?
Get the deck clean and — the one that fails jobs — dry. Stain works by soaking *into* wood, so anything between the stain and open, thirsty pores defeats it. Strip or scrub off any failing old film finish, wash the deck to bare clean wood, and then wait. Stain chases water out of the pores and loses its grip everywhere the water hasn't left, so a deck washed on Saturday is not a deck you stain on Sunday — it needs days of dry weather first. Before you open the stain, run the sprinkle test: flick water onto several boards. Beads and sits → the wood isn't ready (a new pressure-treated deck can shed water for months, and a just-washed one is still wet in the pores) — wait longer. Soaks in within a minute → the wood is open and ready. Test in a few spots; a deck dries unevenly, and the shady north side lags the sunny south.
Choose the stain honestly — the more it hides, the more it can peel. This is the decision that outranks technique, and the trade-off is real and worth stating plainly:
Clear / transparent shows the most grain and the most natural color, carries the least pigment, gives the least UV protection, and therefore lasts the shortest time — but it has almost no film to fail, so it wears by fading and simply gets recoated.
Semi-transparent adds enough pigment to block real UV while still showing the grain. It penetrates rather than films, wears by fading rather than peeling, and is the honest default for a deck's walking surface, which takes sun, foot traffic, and moisture cycling all at once.
Solid (opaque) stain carries the most pigment, hides the grain, and holds its color longest — but it lays a film on the surface, and a film on a flat, sun-baked, foot-trafficked, wet-then-dry deck floor is a film that will eventually crack and peel, and then recoating means scraping and stripping, not just washing and rolling. The rule to carry: more pigment buys more protection and more hiding, but at the solid end it also buys more film, and film on a deck floor peels. Many finishers keep solid color for vertical railings and stair risers and stay semi-transparent underfoot for exactly this reason.
Oil vs. water. Oil (alkyd) stain penetrates deeper, lays off with a longer wet-edge window, and is the traditional deck material — but it dries slowly, ambers over time, is increasingly VOC-restricted, and its rags are the fire hazard in the safety step. Water-based (acrylic) stain dries faster, cleans up with soap and water, ambers less, and meets tighter VOC rules — but its faster dry gives you a shorter wet edge, so lap marks come easier. Neither is "better"; they fail differently, and you pace for the one you bought.
Read the weather and the clock. Stain wants a dry stretch — no rain for the label's window before and after — and it wants to go on out of direct sun. Sun and wind flash the wet edge before you can blend to it, which is the mechanism behind lap marks; morning dew does the same from the other side. Follow the shade around the deck, and don't start a run you can't finish before the sun reaches it.
Staining the deck
Stir, and keep stirring; decant into a pan. Stain is pigment suspended in a thin carrier, and the pigment settles faster than in any paint — an unstirred can stains the first boards weak and the last boards muddy-dark from the sludge, and that is a leading cause of blotchy, uneven color. Stir it fully before you start and stir again at every refill. Pour a working amount into a shallow pan (a deep bucket just invites drowning your applicator); the paint-trays line's mini pans are the right vessel.
Do the verticals and the details first. Work top-down so drips fall onto wood you haven't finished yet. Take the railings, caps, and flat rail members with the 80251 staining block — load the bristle *tips* (dip shallow, press once on the pan to even the load; a submerged block carries stain up into its body and sheds it as drips), then draw it flat and long with the grain, bearing down enough to flex the bristles so they scrub the stain in rather than float it on. Take everything the flat face can't reach — balusters, spindles, post faces, board ends, and the gaps between boards — with the brush; end grain drinks stain hardest and weathers first if you starve it. Do these a step ahead of the adjacent floor so the field pass blends their edge marks away. Then work the floor from the far rail toward the stairs, so you're never stranding yourself on wet boards.
Roll the field and back-brush every pass. On the open floor, lay the stain with the Lamb Pro polyester cover — 47365 (3/4") on rough-sawn or weathered boards, 47361 (3/8") on smooth-planed decking — on a pole, then immediately back-brush (or back-block) what you laid, with the grain, before it sets. This is not optional: a roller *covers* fast but works nothing in, so rolled stain sits on top as a shiny film that never fully penetrates — the brush or block behind it is what drives the color into the wood. Use polyester, not microfiber: microfiber's fine filaments snag and tear on rough deck boards, and its huge capacity floods thin stain into puddles — the exact opposite of what a penetrating coat wants. Neither the fiber choice nor the deck job changes on that flag — nap picks the surface, and 3/4" is the rough-board nap.) Take two or three boards at a time, and finish each board end-to-end in one go.
Do not over-apply — the mistake that never dries. Wood can only absorb so much stain; whatever you leave sitting on the surface after it's had a minute to soak has nowhere to go, and it dries as a sticky, shiny film that stays tacky essentially forever. This bites hardest on dense, old, or already-weathered-shut boards that drink slowly. The discipline: spread thin, let it penetrate, and wipe or back-work any liquid still glistening on the surface into adjacent dry wood after a minute. Where the wood drinks unevenly — end grain, a weathered patch — go back over the thirsty spot with what's already on the face rather than reloading; a double-loaded pass over absorbent wood is tomorrow's dark blotch.
Keep the wet edge alive, board to board. A stain lap mark is permanent — not a texture flaw you can sand out of a film, but a *color* difference driven into the wood where a dried edge overlapped a fresh one. Two rules prevent it: never stop in the middle of a board (a board is finished end-to-end or it shows), and blend each board into its neighbor while both are wet. Sequence your two-or-three-board runs so a fresh edge always meets a still-wet one, and take breaks at the natural stops — the ends of boards, a stair landing — never mid-run.
Keep the deck dry through that window; rain on uncured stain is a re-do. Recoat timing, if you're building a second coat, is the same — the label owns it.
The oily-rag step — do this or risk a fire. This is the safety fact that outranks every other line on this page, because it is life-safety and it is genuinely counterintuitive: rags, roller covers, brushes, blocks, and drop cloths soaked with an oil-based stain (or any drying oil — boiled linseed oil above all) can heat themselves to ignition and burst into flame on their own, with no spark and no warning, hours after the job is done. The oil oxidizes as it cures and gives off heat; a wadded or piled applicator insulates that heat until it reaches kindling temperature. Fire services list oil- and stain-soaked rags among the most common causes of spontaneous-combustion fires (Southern Marin Fire Protection District, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, City of Bend Fire). Do exactly one of two things with every oil-wet rag, cover, block, and cloth: lay them out flat and single-layer on a non-combustible surface (concrete, a metal can lid, a clothesline) until they are bone-dry and stiff — a fully cured rag is inert — or submerge them in water in a sealed metal container. Professional shops keep a UL-listed self-closing metal rag can for exactly this (NFPA guidance via B&W Fire). Never toss them wadded into a trash bag, a bucket, or a pile in the corner of the garage. Water-based stain doesn't carry this mechanism — but the safe rule of the bench is simpler than sorting chemistries: any rag that touched an oil product gets the flat-dry or the water can. Then clean your applicators to match the stain — mineral spirits for oil, warm soapy water for water-based — worked through until they shed no color, and dried; the same spirits-soaked rags join the same protocol.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
"There's a hard line across the deck." A lap mark — a fresh edge dried before you blended the next pass into it. It's driven into the wood, so it won't sand out of a penetrating stain. Prevent it: finish every board end-to-end, keep a wet edge board-to-board, work out of the sun, and — if you bought fast-drying water-based stain — take smaller runs, because your wet-edge window is shorter.
"It's tacky and it won't dry." Over-application: you left more stain on the surface than the wood could absorb, and the excess skinned into a sticky film. On a fresh job, wipe the surplus back within a minute. On a deck that's already gone tacky, there's no shortcut — the surface film has to be scrubbed or stripped off (a rag with the matching solvent, or a deck stripper) and the board re-done thinner. Dense and old boards are the usual victims; give them a thinner coat.
"It's peeling / it never soaked in." Almost always stain over a surface it couldn't penetrate: a deck stained while still damp in the pores, over a mill glaze on new lumber, or over an old finish that should have been stripped. Strip back to sound, open, dry wood and restain. This is also the built-in failure of a solid stain's film on a foot-trafficked floor — if that's what's peeling, the honest answer may be to go semi-transparent underfoot next time.
"The color came out blotchy and uneven." Two common causes. One: an unstirred can — the pigment settled, so early boards went weak and late boards dark; stir at the start and at every refill. Two: uneven wood absorption — end grain and weathered patches drink more and go darker; don't double-load the thirsty spots, and back-work them from what's already on the face.
"The roller left a fuzzy, shiny film and shed fibers." Wrong cover, or no back-brush. Microfiber tears and floods on rough decking; use the Lamb Pro polyester (47365 rough / 47361 smooth), and always back-brush — rolled stain that isn't worked in sits shiny on top and sheds.
