How to Spray Soffits and Eaves with the Fan Square to the Board

The exact product graph is Hyde 28260 and Hyde 28270 only. Those are product leads for moving and orienting an airless tip; they do not supply the sprayer, tip, coating system, masking system, access plan, or permission to assemble an undocumented combination.

Product-fact boundary: Hyde establishes the 28260 as the 3-foot AnglePRO® variant and the 28270 as the 5-foot variant, with an adjustable spray-angle head and a family pressure rating. The evidence does not establish the gun thread, approved guns, tip/fan selection, working distance, setup procedure, or QuickReach compatibility.

Production status: authored local artifact only.

Job: prepare and spray a qualified exterior soffit/eave assembly from stable ground, keeping the airless fan square to each downward-facing or vertical board as the run moves through soffit field, fascia, returns, vents, gutter shadows, and corners.

Outcome: an even, continuous coating on the intended planes; open vents and drainage paths; no bridged joints, loaded perforations, electrical exposure, injection event, uncontrolled overspray, or coating deposited on roof, gutter, siding, glazing, landscape, people, vehicles, or neighboring property.

Time: the coating system and site own the clock. Preparation, recoat, cure, and weather windows come from the substrate and coating documents under actual conditions. This guide supplies no generic schedule.

Difficulty: advanced airless work: read a narrow overhead plane from below, change orientation without arcing, maintain the wet edge around vents and corners, and stop before a small defect becomes a long stripe.

The two Hyde product roles:

Its extra lever makes wind, fatigue, rear-sweep, and head-control screening more demanding.

The head function is shared. No different coating ability, tip family, pressure behavior, connector, or finish quality is claimed between them. Select the shortest verified assembly that places the head square while the operator remains balanced and can see the complete working area.

Stop gates before setup

Diagnose the substrate and the old coating

Do not treat “soffit” as a material. The face may be painted wood, plywood, fiber cement, engineered wood, aluminum, vinyl, or a vented manufactured panel. Fascia, crown, frieze, rake trim, and gutter backing may be different materials in the same run. Record each surface and obtain its current preparation and coating instructions.

Probe before washing. Rotten wood, swollen edges, loose fasteners, failed flashing, active leaks, open end grain, moving joints, corrosion, delamination, and insect damage require repair. Paint cannot restore strength, close a water path, or reattach a panel.

Read the old film. Peeling to bare substrate suggests moisture or bottom-bond failure; intercoat peeling suggests contamination, chalk, gloss, or incompatible layers. Trace blisters beneath roof or gutter edges to their cause. Mildew, chalk, salt, grease, and nesting debris are bond breakers.

For pre-1978 buildings or unknown coating histories, disturbing paint can spread lead chips and dust overhead and across the ground. Paid work may fall under EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting requirements. Establish lead-safe containment, work, cleaning, waste, and verification before disturbance; start with the current EPA RRP contractor requirements.

Qualify the coating system

Preserve assembly functions:

Soffit perforations, grilles, and vent strips are air paths. Do not fill, bridge, or reduce them.

Lap joints, panel gaps, weep paths, flashing exits, and gutter drainage are not cracks to seal by instinct.

A gutter must drain and move as designed. Fascia work does not authorize spraying into the trough, over hangers or seams, behind flashing, or into a downspout.

Roof shingles, drip edge, sealants, membranes, and factory-finished gutters need their own compatibility decision. “Same color” is not permission to coat them.

If the system maker excludes spray application, the job routes to its approved brush/roller method. If the coating requires a tip, pressure, ventilation, or PPE condition the site cannot support, change the system or method.

Close the weather, wind, access, and electrical gates

The complete setup, spray, cleanup, and film-protection window must fit the coating instructions and forecast. No universal weather threshold is stated here.

Wind is judged by control, not a number. Walk the route with the system stopped. During an authorized test, stop if air bends the fan, carries mist beyond containment, turns or oscillates the head, affects footing, defeats shielding, or dries the wet edge. If 28270 fails while 28260 reaches, use the shorter tool; if neither stays controlled, postpone or change access.

Map firm, level, visible footing clear of hoses, masking, plants, holes, slopes, and runoff. The operator must move with the pass and lower the assembly without stretching, stepping backward blind, or using an improvised platform, roof edge, or occupied ladder. An extension does not create safe access.

Survey lines, service equipment, fixtures, receptacles, fans, and damaged wiring. AnglePRO has no established insulation rating; treat the wet system and metal components as conductive and keep them outside the controlling electrical exclusion during raising, work, and lowering. A main breaker does not de-energize upstream utility conductors. Unisolated equipment in the spray zone blocks that section.

Protect the building and establish the exclusion zone

Work one elevation at a time. Remove portable property from the drift zone. Exclude people, pets, traffic, openings, air intakes, and neighboring property from mist, rebound, and fallout.

Mask and shield by consequence:

Cover every wall, opening, roof, gutter, fixture, hardscape, planting, and finish outside the coating operation.

Protect the gutter opening and roof edge without trapping water, damaging the roof, or creating a loose flap the fan can lift.

Mask vents to preserve their openings. Remove grilles or fixtures only under their building/electrical procedure; never spray through them.

Use a rigid hand shield only where the operator can hold it from a stable, excluded position without placing any body part near the fan. A shield is a moving edge, not a substitute for masking broad fallout.

Extend containment beyond the apparent edge. Airless mist and wind do not stop at the fascia line.

Build a service zone where the extension can be lowered without crossing people, conductors, glazing, or wet coating. Tip work, inspection, cleaning, and head contact happen there under the pressure-relief procedure.

Authorized stopped fit and setup

Therefore physical setup begins with documents, not trial pressure.

Record the exact pump, hose, gun, guard, tip, extension, and coating; obtain current instructions and ratings.

Require agreement on connections, seals, guard/tip arrangement, ratings, assembly, pressure relief, startup, shutdown, and flushing. “Standard fit” or a similar thread is insufficient.

With the system shut down, locked, and relieved by its manual, inspect the extension, joint, head, guard, hose, and gun. Damage, contamination, missing parts, makeshift seals, or uncertain identity blocks use.

Assemble only by the exact current instructions. This guide supplies no thread direction, adaptor, sealant, torque, lock, or loading recipe. Never force, tape, shim, cross-thread, or combine extensions to manufacture reach.

Do not mount an AnglePRO on a QuickReach-mounted gun from this guide.

Choose the shortest candidate that covers the measured run from valid footing. Before pressure, rehearse raising, facing, passing, turning, repositioning, and lowering. Keep head and target visible and hose clear.

None is supplied here.

If the adjustment procedure for the AnglePRO head is absent or unclear, the setup remains stopped. The family claim that the angle changes during work does not authorize an invented hand motion, actuation method, or contact with a live head.

Read the test pattern on an approved witness before aiming at the building. Require a stable, even fan and controllable trigger. Observation cannot approve undocumented fit.

The qualitative square-fan method

“Square” means the fan’s centerline meets the board face straight on and both pattern edges travel the same path to the surface. It does not mean the gun handle, operator’s forearm, or extension shaft must look square from the ground. The adjustable head separates the tip’s facing from the operator’s comfortable stance.

Read each plane separately:

Soffit field: the target plane faces downward. Orient the head so the fan faces the board rather than raking from fascia toward wall or wall toward fascia.

Fascia and vertical returns: reorient the head so the fan faces the vertical member. Do not keep the soffit setting and rotate the wrist through a corner.

Deep house-side edge and gutter shadow: move the stance until the target remains visible, then face the head to that local plane. If the edge is hidden, hand it to a controlled brush/detail method. Blind spray is not coverage.

Rake/eave transition: break the geometry into short visible planes. A changing roofline is not one long wrist sweep.

Hold gun and extension as one quiet frame. Use the head to face the surface and the feet to translate the fan. A wrist arc changes distance and facing, printing heavy-center/dry-end evidence. Keep the wrist quiet and step with the pass. The 28270 magnifies small movements, so extra length must be earned.

Maintain one controlled working distance selected under the sprayer/coating instructions. Read constancy qualitatively: the fan footprint should not visibly grow and fade, the wet sheen should not pulse from heavy to dry, and the head should remain in the same relationship to the board through the pass. If the stance cannot preserve that relationship, stop and reposition.

Spray sequence — edges, field, returns, and wet edge

Divide the elevation into natural runs

Plan stops at corners, material joints, downspouts, full-board ends, or other architectural breaks. Do not plan a break in open soffit field. Mark vent groups, lights, cameras, brackets, gutter interruptions, and transitions where the head must be re-faced or the detail handed off.

Different soffit and fascia colors require separate masked operations, with timing controlled by the coating system. For one color, sequence the house-side edge, soffit field, outside edge, then fascia and returns so the final fascia pass resolves fallout.

Start the pass moving and finish it moving

Start travel before triggering into the work; release while movement continues at the far end. A parked start stamps a heavy bar and a late release loads corners and returns.

Keep the trigger locked whenever spraying is interrupted for walking around an obstacle, changing elevation, moving masking, handing off, inspecting closely, or lowering the tool. The trigger stays under the operator’s control; the live tip at the far end remains the muzzle.

Lay the soffit field with a living overlap

Run with the board direction where it keeps the edge readable. Join each pass while the prior edge remains open, placing the softer new pattern onto it for continuous film.

Keep a steady walking rhythm. If the edge will set, finish at a natural break rather than racing or flooding. Correct a dead edge only at the coating system’s permitted stage.

Treat vents as geometry, not holes to fill

Read vent openings after every pass; ribs and perforations load before flat field. Stop at bridging, beads, or spray entering the cavity. Never blow a vent open with more spray or poke it live.

Turn corners by ending one plane and starting the next

At a soffit-to-fascia corner, finish and release on one plane, re-face by the authorized procedure, establish the vertical plane, then start moving. Never roll the wrist around a corner while triggered; it loads the inside and throws mist outside.

At an end return, shorten the operation to a visible controlled section. Use masking or a shield at the boundary. If the fan cannot stay fully on the member, finish the return by hand rather than spraying into open air.

Keep gutters and drip edges out of the blind zone

Physical entry behind a gutter is not permission. Work only where tip, impact, wet film, gutter, roof edge, and service path remain visible. Never hunt behind flashing or roofing. Mask the lip and edge; hand hidden detail to a safer close method.

Frequent readback — stop defects while they are short

Inspect after the test, first board, each vent group, geometry change, reposition, and natural run. Use raking light from multiple ground positions.

Read these witnesses:

Square fan: wet film is balanced across the pass rather than heavy on one edge and dusty on the other.

Distance/control: pattern width and wet sheen stay stable through the stroke; starts and stops do not print bars.

Overlap/wet edge: adjacent lanes merge without a dry stripe, doubled ridge, or sheen seam.

Vents: holes remain open and free of bridging or internal loading.

Corners/returns: no rope of coating in the inside corner and no fan escape beyond the outside edge.

Gutter/roof: masking remains seated, with no mist inside the trough, on shingles, or behind flashing.

Site: no drift beyond the exclusion zone, no contamination of glass, siding, plants, vehicles, or neighboring property.

Diagnose the evidence

One wet edge and one dry edge: the head is not square or the pattern is uneven. Stop, depressurize if head contact is required, re-establish authorized facing, and retest. Persistent asymmetry requires manual-directed service, not wrist compensation.

Heavy center with dry or widening ends: the extension is arcing. Quiet the wrist, shorten the run, move the feet, or use the shorter extension if it reaches. Do not chase the ends.

Sag, curtain, bead, or drip: film is accumulating from slow travel, stopped trigger, repeated overlap, changed distance, or a loaded edge. Release, protect below, and use the coating maker’s correction. Never blast a sag flat.

Holiday, dull gap, or shadowed rib: distinguish a viewing artifact from a true miss. Join a workable wet edge with the same square, moving pass; otherwise mark it for the next permitted stage. Never lean or blind-spray.

Dusty overspray on target: suspect fan rake, changed distance, wind, a drying edge, or pattern failure. Stop and diagnose.

Overspray beyond target: exclusion, masking, shielding, wind, timing, or sequence failed.

Repositioning, depressurization, injection response, and cleanup

For an ordinary step along a clear run: release the trigger, engage its lock, confirm the tip points into the controlled zone, move the feet and hose, re-establish the stance and full head view, then resume. Do not walk backward while looking only at the soffit.

Lower and fully relieve pressure by the exact sprayer procedure before touching the head, guard, tip, connection, leak, clog, or fluid path; before uncertain angle adjustment; and before disassembly. Never catch, wipe, or block a leak with a hand. Never clear a tip while it is live.

Airless fluid can pass through skin through a pinhole and destroy deep tissue. It is a surgical emergency. After skin contact, stop and go immediately to an emergency department; say “high-pressure injection injury” and identify the fluid. Do not wait for symptoms. At completion, shut down, relieve, flush, clean, inspect, and store the system by its manuals and coating chemistry. This guide supplies no cleaning recipe. Collect waste under label and local requirements; never discharge through a gutter or storm drain.

Remove masking when the coating and masking system permit, without tearing the new edge. Reopen and visually verify every soffit vent, grille, weep path, gutter route, and moving joint. Inspect the elevation from close valid access where available and again from the ground in raking light. Confirm adjacent property and landscape are clean.

Restore electrical fixtures only under their exact procedure, after the coating, boxes, connections, and surrounding area meet the required dry and service conditions. Restore the exclusion zone only after tools, hose, masking, debris, and wet-coating hazards are removed.

Boundary with porch ceilings and dormers

This guide is the linear eave-edge job: narrow soffit fields, fascia, vents, gutter shadows, end returns, and repeated horizontal-to-vertical transitions along a building perimeter.

That sibling job owns broad overhead board or beadboard fields, open porch perimeters, structure below the ceiling, and long ceiling-plane wet-edge planning. A porch ceiling may use the same two products, but its dominant problem is a broad overhead field—not the eave’s gutter/vent/edge sequence.

That sibling job adds sloped or elevated access, dormer cheeks, rake geometry, gable fields, and the unverified question of combining different reach systems. The 28270 appears there as an angle tool, but this guide does not authorize roof stance, ladder work, or AnglePRO-on-QuickReach compatibility.

Shared hardware does not collapse different geometries into one method.

History footnote — why the tip can turn while the gun stays in the hand

Airless spraying moved atomization into a shaped tip. Graco identifies its 1958 Hydra-Spray as the first airless paint sprayer (Graco history). A remote adjustable tip can face a plane the gun hand cannot comfortably face; it does not make that plane safe or reachable.
