How to Spray a High Ceiling from the Floor

Job: two even airless coats on a high ceiling — the 12-to-16-foot band, or a stairwell or open-foyer ceiling above it — sprayed from the floor with a telescoping pole and, where the angle needs it, an angling tip extension. No scaffolding, no rented tower, no ladder move every six feet.

Time: the spraying itself is the fast part — Hyde's own math turns the roughly 12 square feet you can paint from one standing position into about 212, and a ceiling that would be an afternoon of climb-paint-climb sprays out in minutes. Everything around it is the real clock: masking the *entire* room (atomized paint settles as a fine fog on every surface, not just the floor under the tip), setting and priming the rig, and flushing it clean when you finish. Budget a half-day for one tall room including full masking and cleanup, a full day for a stairwell or great-room ceiling. The mask and the flush are the job; the trigger-time is minutes.

Difficulty: real airless skill — not a first project. A pole rewards a painter who already has gun discipline and mercilessly exposes one who doesn't: every small wobble at your hands becomes a foot of standoff error out at a 12-foot tip. Add the discipline of masking a whole room and the non-negotiable pressure-safety routine below, and this is work for someone already comfortable on an airless gun. If you have never run one, learn it at arm's length on a wall before you ever put it on a pole.

Read this first: airless injection injury

An airless sprayer makes its mist by forcing paint through the tip at pressures in the thousands of PSI — the AnglePRO extensions are rated to 4000. At that pressure the stream will pass straight through skin. It is not a cut; it is an injection, driving paint into the tissue of a hand or finger, and it is a medical emergency. The trap is that it does not look like one: the entry point is a pinhole that may barely bleed and barely hurt in the first hours, so "it's just a scratch" is the sentence that costs people fingers. Anyone who takes a stream — however minor the mark looks — needs immediate professional treatment, and should tell the clinician plainly that it was a high-pressure paint injection. Graco's own safety guidance says it in one line: fluid injected into the skin "might look like just a cut, but it is a serious injury" (Graco — Airless Sprayer Safety).

Four rules make the reach version survivable, and this guide assumes them at every step:

Keep the tip guard fitted, always. It is what stops a hand from ever reaching the orifice.

Engage the trigger lock between every pass — before you walk the pole, reposition on stairs, change the length or the head angle, or hand the gun to anyone. A pole holds a live tip as much as twelve feet from your hand; you own where it points the way you own a muzzle, and you never aim it at yourself or anyone else.

Fully relieve system pressure before you clear a clogged tip or open the fluid path. A clog cleared with the system live is the classic injection — follow your pump's pressure-relief procedure first, every time.

Never wipe or block a leak with your hand — a pinhole in a hose injects exactly like a tip does.

That is the boundary. The rest of this guide is the craft.

Before you start: measure the height and be honest about the method

Measure the ceiling, then size the reach. The number on a pole is not the height you paint. The gun rides at the top of the pole, your hands work the grip somewhere around chest-to-eye level, and the tip sits its standoff *below* the ceiling — so paintable height is roughly pole length plus your gun-hand height minus that standoff. Hyde states that arithmetic once, for the 28680: it extends 5.5' to 8.5' *to paint heights up to 16'*. That makes the 28680 the workhorse for the 12-to-16-foot band — great rooms, tall first floors, low commercial. Buy the 3' for that lower reach and tighter control, the 5' for more height and more distance from the fallout. And whichever pole you run, the AnglePRO on a handheld gun is what finishes the ceiling-to-wall cut line and the corners the wide pole pass has no business crowding.

Spray or roll — decide honestly before you mask a thing. Spraying wins when the room can be emptied and sealed, when the ceiling is big or very high or textured, and when speed matters — new construction, a great room, a stairwell soffit, a popcorn ceiling that must not be dragged at by a roller. Rolling wins when the room is lived-in and you can't fog it: a roller throws a little spatter, an airless gun coats *everything* the masking doesn't. Spray is for when you have committed to masking the world.

The tip must match the coating and the fan width you want — sized off your sprayer's chart, not guessed — and it is a wear part, so a rounded, over-used tip is the first thing to rule out when a fan won't lay flat. The pump must hold pressure at the tip you have chosen; a unit too small for the tip sags under load and atomization collapses into tails and spatter no technique can rescue.

Prep: seal the room, then set the tool

Mask the whole room — this is where spray earns its reputation. A roller rains a little; an airless gun makes a drifting fog that finds the tops of door casings, the far wall, and the inside of the return-air grille. Empty the room if you can. What stays gets sheeted: the entire floor, every wall you are *not* painting, windows, fixtures, and any built-in, taped tight at the edges because overspray creeps under loose plastic. The spray shields — the rigid hand-held shields in the sibling line — are the tool for the live cut line, held against the ceiling-to-wall corner so the fan can run right to the edge without fogging the wall; cross-referenced in the footer. The masking materials themselves are elsewhere in the store; this line is the reach hardware, not the plastic.

De-energize and drop the ceiling fixtures. You are about to swing a conductive aluminum pole through the exact airspace a light fixture or fan blade occupies. Kill power to the ceiling boxes at the breaker, drop each fixture on its wire or take it down, bag it in plastic, and turn or pull a fan's blades out of the arc. Paint the ring behind it clean; reassemble only after the paint is dry and never with the circuit live.

Assemble the tool and set it up dry. Lock the airless gun into the pole's mount (or thread the AnglePRO onto the gun where the tip guard normally sits) with the system depressurized and the trigger locked. Set the pole to the *shortest* length that reaches — a pole run at the top of its range with your arms at the top of theirs leaves nothing in reserve to hold the pass straight, and control is worth more than the last foot of reach. Then set the mount's adjustable spray angle so the fan will strike the ceiling square — a fan held even slightly off perpendicular lands its near edge wet and its far edge dry and coarse, and at reach you cannot see that happening. Prime the pump, unlock, and shoot a test fan onto scrap cardboard or a masked wall: you want a full, even, tapered pattern with no heavy fingers at the ends. Bring the pressure *up* until those fingers just disappear and no further — over-pressure only wears the tip and makes more fog. Re-lock the trigger before you carry it to the ceiling.

The spraying: hold distance, walk the pass, keep the edge alive

Hold the standoff — about 10 to 12 inches off the ceiling. That is the working airless distance, and at reach it is the single hardest thing to keep constant. Too far and the fan spreads thin and dry; too close and it piles a narrow heavy stripe. Set the pole length so that comfortable standoff falls where your arms naturally carry the pole — not at a stretch — and then defend that distance with your feet, not your wrists (next step).

Walk the pass; don't sweep it. A swung arm pivots, and a pivot at the end of an eight- or twelve-foot pole turns into a foot of standoff swing across one stroke — soaked in the middle, dust-dry at the ends. The oldest rule in spraying, scaled up, is the fix: move your feet, not your arms. Hold the pole in a fixed carry and walk each pass at a steady pace, letting your legs be the straight bearing that keeps the tip parallel to the ceiling. Lay the passes in lanes across the *short* dimension of the room so each one is brief, and overlap every pass about halfway onto the one before it — aim the tip at the wet edge of the last pass so the new fan's thin outer half doubles over the old fan's thin outer half and the two build to one even film. Constant speed sets the coat thickness; where you can, throw the first pass in raking light from the work lamp and check the build before you commit to a rhythm you then trust, because sheen-reading a ceiling from fourteen feet is squinting into glare.

Lead the fan on and off the work. With a gun in hand you feather the trigger just before and just after each pass so paint never piles where the stroke starts and stops. The fan leads the stroke; it never begins or ends parked on dry ceiling, which is what stamps a heavy bar across an overhead coat you cannot cleanly touch up.

Keep the head square as the geometry changes. A ceiling is not one angle from where you stand — the near end sits more overhead, the far end rakes away — so re-set the pole's spray-angle mount as you move down the room to keep the fan perpendicular to the surface it is actually hitting. On a stairwell wall or a sloped ceiling the same rule holds: the fan follows the plane, and the mount angle (or, down in the lower band, the AnglePRO's 145° head) is how you make it. Squareness is the whole spray-quality rule; reach is just what makes it hard.

Keep the wet edge alive — a sprayed ceiling is one performance. Paint bonds to wet paint invisibly; spray into an edge that has begun to tack and it drags in as a permanent lap ridge that afternoon light will rake across forever. A ceiling is a single plane, open to the air on every side, so its wet edge dies faster than a wall's — and you cannot see it dying from the floor. So once you start, you finish: work continuously wall-to-wall, keep the lanes short so you return to the live edge fast, and reload or reposition *between* lanes, not mid-field. On a ceiling too big to cross before the far edge sets, break it only at a planned natural line — a beam, a light line, a seam — never in open field. Reposition on stairs or across the room only with the trigger locked, then pick the wet edge back up exactly where you left it.

Manage the overspray while you work. Everything you spray upward that misses the ceiling comes back down — on your hat, your glasses, and you if you look up into it, which is why the respirator and wraparound eye protection are not optional and the brimmed hat is doing real work. Keep the spray shield at the cut line so the fan can finish into the corner without fogging the wall behind it, and move it pass by pass along the edge. Watch where your fog drifts — toward doorways, toward return-air grilles; if it is leaving the room, the masking has a gap.

Clear a clog the safe way — every time, no exceptions. A tip that suddenly spits, tails, or throws a split fan is usually a partial clog. Do not reach up and wipe it, and do not crack it loose under pressure. Lower the pole, engage the trigger lock, relieve system pressure by your pump's procedure, and only then clear or reverse the tip. This is the exact moment the injection injury happens — a hand near a live orifice when the clog lets go — and it is the one place on this job where the shortcut is the one that maims. A disciplined filter routine on the rig prevents most clogs in the first place; the safe-clearing drill is for the ones that get through.

Give it the second coat. One airless coat rarely hides a ceiling evenly, especially over spot-primed stains or patches, and wet paint reads thin and blotchy right up until it doesn't — so don't chase thin spots mid-coat. Wait the coating's stated recoat window (longer in a cold or humid room), then spray the second coat the same way: same lanes, same standoff, same square fan, same living wet edge.

Flush the rig before you do anything else, then put the room back. Airless equipment is unforgiving of paint left to dry in it — a gun, hose, filter, or tip that sleeps full wakes up clogged or glued. Relieve pressure, then flush the whole fluid path clean with the washout your coating calls for, work the mount and any filter clean before dried paint needs force, and store the tip and guard clean. Only once the ceiling is dry and the rig is down do you rehang the fixtures and restore power.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

"The pattern ends in thin fingers or tails, and the ends land dry." Fingering is the fan starving at its edges — most often you are holding too much standoff (the fan has spread too wide and thin by the time it lands), and sometimes the pressure is a touch low or the tip is worn.

"Sags and runs, especially at the wall line." The opposite error: too little standoff (the tip too close, piling a heavy narrow stripe), too slow a walk, or a pass double-hit because you couldn't see the first one land. Back the tip off to the working distance, keep the feet moving at a constant pace so the film builds evenly, and resist re-hitting a lane you think looks thin — let the full second coat carry it. Catch a run while it is still wet with a light leading pass; once it is dry, it is a sand-and-recoat.

"I came back to a lane and the edge had already set." The wet edge died while you reloaded, repositioned, or chased something — and from the floor you never saw it tack. Keep the lanes short so the round trip to the live edge is quick, work the ceiling as one continuous session, and overlap generously so a slightly stiff edge still gets buried. If a whole ceiling is too big to cross in time, that is a plan-the-break problem (Step 11) or a two-person job — one keeps the edge alive while the other reloads — not something a heavier pass fixes.

"The clog cleared while my hand was near the tip." This is the injury the whole safety section exists to prevent, and the fix is not a technique — it is a rule you do not break: lower the pole, lock the trigger, relieve pressure, *then* touch the tip (Step 13). If you find yourself reaching up toward a live tip on a pole, stop; nothing on a ceiling is worth a hand.

"Lap ridges show up when the afternoon sun rakes the ceiling." The fan wasn't square, or a wet edge tacked before it was overlapped. Square the mount angle to the surface as you cross it (Step 10) and keep the edge alive (Step 11). On an existing ceiling, only a full second coat sprayed square and continuous will blend it — spot passes won't.

The honest limits (what this catalog does and doesn't cover for this job)

The sprayer is not in this line — only the reach is. The poles and tip extensions move the tip; the pump, hose, gun, and spray tips are the airless rig you already own or rent. This guide can tell you how to hold the tip square and walk it across a ceiling; it cannot sell you the tip, and tip size and series are matched to your coating on your sprayer's chart, not here.

The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)

Spraying a ceiling while standing on the floor is a consequence of a single 1958 invention. Compressed-air spray guns had painted furniture and cars beautifully since the 1890s, but the gun had to face its work, because the paint was atomized *inside* the gun. Then the Gray Company of Minneapolis — later Graco — shipped the Hydra-Spray, the first *airless* sprayer: no atomizing air at all, just fluid driven through a shaped tip at up to 3,000 PSI, breaking into mist by pressure drop at the orifice alone (Graco — company history). That moved the only part that matters — the tip — to the far end of a high-pressure line and reduced the gun to a valve. And a valve can be anywhere: on the end of your arm, on a head that angles 145°, or twelve feet up a telescoping pole with its trigger wired back to your hand. Every pole and extension in this line is a footnote to that inversion — and so, exactly, is its safety chapter, because the same pressure that atomizes paint at the tip is what makes an injection a surgical emergency.
