Slabbing is the recovery trade: one straight cut, a controlled peel, and the roll goes back to work. Job: strip the damaged outer layers from a wound roll — transit crush, water, contamination — down to sound material, and hand back a roll the machine or the customer can actually run.

Time: the knife work is minutes. Shallow clamp damage is a two-cut, ten-minute recovery; a roll that sat in water can run an hour end-to-end, most of it peeling and hauling. Assessment and roll handling set the pace — the cutting never does.

Difficulty: judgment, not strength. The cut is one straight line; knowing where damage ends and good material begins — and stopping there — is the trade.

Everything else: roll chocks, cut-resistant gloves, soapstone or lumber crayon, tape measure, a broad stiff blade or dull bar to start the peel (the knife is not a lever), a broke cart or skid for what comes off, roll wrap and tape for re-dressing, a moisture meter if water is the story, and camera and scale access for the damage claim. None of that is knife catalog — the roll-handling gear especially is its own world, and this page assumes your floor already has it.

Before you cut: chock it, then read it

Chock the roll where it lies, both sides, before anything else touches it. A paper roll is heavy equipment that happens to be round — machine rolls run from a few hundred pounds to several tons — and a roll that starts moving with a person beside it does not care what the person had planned. OSHA's pulp-and-paper standard writes chocking into law: rubber chocks with wooden cores for rolls stored on smooth floors, and the bottom rolls of any stack chocked on each side against shifting (29 CFR 1910.261); being struck or crushed by massive rolling stock sits at the top of the agency's hazard list for these mills (OSHA — Pulp, Paper, and Paperboard Mills: Hazards and Solutions). And one absolute: never slab a suspended roll. Not in clamp-truck jaws, not under a crane, not "just this once." On the floor, chocked, or not at all.

Name the damage before you fight it. Rolls arrive at this bench four ways. *Transit damage:* clamp bite and crush flats, drop gouges, edge strikes — the layers are torn, creased, or fractured, and creased paper breaks the web at speed downstream. *Water:* floor wicking at the bottom arc, sprinkler or rain events, condensation sweating under an intact wrapper — swollen, cockled layers that will not run and will not dry flat. *Out-of-round:* a storage flat spot where the outer layers took a set. *Contamination:* oil, solvent, dirt, glass. Each has a depth story, and depth is the whole game.

Find the damage floor. A gouge announces its own depth — measure it. Water lies: moisture in a wound roll travels ahead of the stain, so plan to peel past the last wet wrap until the paper comes up bone-dry, and trust a meter over your palm if one is available. A flat spot is honest on the surface and worst underneath at the crease lines. And know what slabbing cannot do: it removes damaged *layers*. It cannot round up a roll that has gone oval to depth, and it cannot rescue a crushed core — those are rewinder work or a reject, and a guide that told you otherwise would be selling you a knife instead of an answer.

Do the arithmetic before you cut deep. On a 40-inch-diameter roll, the outermost inch of radius holds close to a tenth of all the paper on it — annulus arithmetic is unforgiving. Every needless half-inch of depth is real tonnage off the claim sheet, which is why the discipline of this job is depth restraint, not cutting power.

Strike the line. One straight soapstone line across the face, parallel to the roll axis, core to core. If the kraft wrapper and headers are still on, stripping them is the opening move of the *Clear Wraps and Lap-Ups* guide; this walkthrough starts at bare paper.

The cut — paper rolls, square point

Set your body before the blade. Gloves on — the off hand at minimum, because it will be near the line doing the peeling. Stand so the stroke's follow-through runs past the roll face, not into your thigh, and keep your feet out of the path the roll would take if the chocks failed. The 60780 wants both hands for deep damage: one on the handle, one flat on the spine near the tip — which is exactly the grip the 60870's long handle formalizes, and the force profile the 60810's finger guard exists for.

Cut the line in progressive passes — never one. Blade low, long edge doing the work, square end leading. Dense wound paper answers the edge in layers: each wrap gives, and the next takes the blade's weight. Ride that feel down through the damaged depth and let the blunt end *land* on the first sound wrap — landing is the entire point of this pattern. A pointed blade at that same moment is already through and into the paper you came to save; the square point refuses the puncture, which is why a shoe-bench pattern owns a paper-mill job.

Start the peel at the cut. Work the corner of a broad stiff blade or a dull bar under the slab at the cut line and lift — the wraps release along the cut and come back as a mat the width of the face. Peel low and steady, and where the slab resists, cut; where it comes, pull. The knife opens, the hands harvest.

Rotate and repeat until the roll is telling the truth. Pull the near chock, quarter-turn the roll under control — two people or a turning bar, hands on the face, nobody ahead of it — re-chock, and continue the cut-and-peel. Stop when the surface comes up dry, clean, and unbroken all the way around: sound paper peels with a live, even resistance, no damp drag, no crease lines. For water, take a few more wraps past the first dry one; for contamination, slab to visibly clean plus a margin — and anything involving glass or a food-contact grade escalates past the knife to QA, whose call it is.

The soft-roll variant — fabric and nonwoven rolls

Different roll, different protection logic. Cloth and nonwovens do not release as a coherent slab the way dense wound paper does — the wraps are soft, stretchy, and snag-prone, and an 8" two-hand blade is the wrong instrument entirely. The tool is a mill blade at short exposure: clamp the 62420 in the 63085 or 63080 handle and set the slotted screws so the blade shows barely more edge than one working depth. On the soft roll, exposure control replaces the square tip as the protection mechanism — the blade physically cannot reach past what the set screw allows. Reach across a wide face with the 9" 62180 at the same short exposure. If the roll is polyester or nylon nonwoven, the line's own steel rule applies: abrasive synthetics eat high-carbon edges, and the 088 pattern has an HSS twin (62450) for exactly that stock. Plants standardized on BG20 or BG71A blades hold identical listed dimensions to the 088 — match your incumbent pattern; the catalog records no working difference and neither will this page.

Light passes, peel by hand, and respect what a nick costs here. Draw along the marked axis line in light strokes, peel the damaged wraps back, and cut only where they resist. Depth discipline matters *more* on soft goods, not less: one over-deep pass through the layer below puts a hole in the web that repeats every circumference — a single careless stroke becomes a flaw every few feet down a hundred-yard roll. Short exposure is what makes that mistake hard to commit.

Deal with the slab. In a mill, slabbed paper is broke — it goes back to the repulper and becomes paper again; at a converter or warehouse it goes to the recycling bale. Wet paper is deceptively heavy and slick, so take it in small slabs with the cart at the roll, not in one heroic armload. Fabric and nonwoven waste goes to the rag stream.

Close the record. Photograph the damage before the first cut and the recovered surface after the last, and get the weight loss — measured or calculated from the diameter change. Transit damage is a carrier claim, and the claim is only as good as the record; a pattern of slabbed rolls from one lane or one carrier is an upstream conversation your write-off log wins for you.

Re-dress the roll. Re-wrap it, mark the new diameter and the slab on the roll record, and send it back to storage or the machine. If what remains is out-of-round beyond what the next operation tolerates, that verdict belongs to the rewinder crew or the machine room — the knife's work ended at sound paper.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

You cut past sound. Depth greed, or the angle steepened as you leaned in. Shallower passes, blade lower, and let the square end land — the tool is trying to stop at the right layer; allow it.

You're chasing a spiral. You peeled and cut at the same time, the release point walked around the roll, and now you are unwinding a bandage forever. Strike a fresh straight line parallel to the axis, cut the whole line first, then peel. The cut and the peel are separate strokes — that separation *is* the technique.

The blade buries and grabs. Wound paper is dense and closes on a blade that goes in too steep or too deep. Back out, keep the edge keen, return to progressive passes — and never lever sideways to free it; long thin high-carbon steel pries about as well as it bends.

The wet slab tears ragged instead of peeling. Soaked fiber has no tensile strength. Narrower slabs, smaller bites, and let the cart do the carrying.

The water keeps coming back. You fixed the roll and not the cause — wet floor, breached wrapper, sweating stack. Slabbing the same roll twice is a storage finding, not a knife job.

The roll moved. That is not a cutting problem; it is a failed step 1. Re-chock and start the layout again — nothing below step 1 compensates for skipping it.

On cloth: snagging, fraying, pulled threads. Exposure too long or edge past its hone. Shorten the blade, touch up the edge, lighten the stroke.

The history footnote (why this job exists at all)

Before 1798 this job could not exist — paper was formed one sheet at a time, and a sheet cannot be slabbed. Louis-Nicolas Robert's machine of 1798 formed paper as a continuous web for the first time ([Robert C. The continuous web made the wound roll, the wound roll made roll damage, and slabbing has been papermaking's recovery trade ever since — mills even keep a word for what comes off ("broke," because it goes back to the pulper and returns as paper).
