Evidence boundary: Hyde's accepted exact-model claims establish the two names and blade dimensions below. This guide therefore gives no invented number for any of them.

The job

Skiving removes controlled shavings from a leather edge so a fold, stitched stack, or lap can lie without an unwanted ridge. Ordinary edge skiving is a thinning operation, not a through-cut. The grain surface normally remains intact while material is removed from the flesh side.

The finished edge is judged by its next operation:

Fold or turned edge: it bends and lies where the pattern requires without a hard lump, a sudden hinge, exposed grain damage, or an edge too weak to survive the turn.

Stitched allowance: the intended stack lies evenly while enough sound leather remains for the specified stitch placement and service load.

Lap or overlap: the dry-fitted pieces meet without a visible or palpable step and without starving either piece of strength.

Local relief: a corner or intersection closes without one full-thickness layer piling on another.

There is no universal depth for those outcomes. Leather type, original thickness, temper, finish, construction, stitch position, adhesive system, and service load all change the stopping point.

Exact tool selection

55170 — the running skiver

Hyde's official exact-model name is Thin Skiver Round Point Knife. The accepted catalog blade dimensions are 5-1/8" × 5/8" × .042". Use it for the running passes along an accessible edge. The thin blade is the line's flexible edge-skiving choice; its length supports a continuous, overlapping pass rather than a series of isolated nicks.

50100 — the short correction knife

Hyde's official exact-model name is Square Point Knife #2. Its accepted dimensions are 3" × 11/16" × .058". Use it where the 55170 cannot lie and travel cleanly: a tight corner, a short taper, a transition between two skived fields, or a small high spot left after the running passes.

The 50100 is not a second full-length skiver and is not permission to pry. Its short, stiffer blade is for controlled local work. If it cannot sit flat without the hand entering the travel path, change the support or fixture; do not force the corner.

Selection stop

Do not proceed merely because one of the two knives can be made to cut. Stop and reassess when:

the stock is too dense for either knife to take a controlled shaving without force;

the part is too small to support while keeping every body part out of the blade path;

the leather is so soft or elastic that it bunches ahead of a keen edge despite proper support;

the required tolerance is a production specification better held by a guarded or machine-controlled process;

the leather maker, finish supplier, adhesive supplier, or project specification prohibits moisture or hand skiving;

the grain must be removed, the leather must be split throughout its width, or the piece must be cut through—each is a different operation.

Read the leather before choosing the setup

Identify the faces

Grain side: the tighter outside face, whether natural, corrected, coated, printed, or otherwise finished.

Flesh side: the underside or split face, usually more fibrous.

For this job, lay out and skive from the flesh side unless the construction specification explicitly requires something else. Do not use the appearance of one scrap as proof that every piece is oriented the same way; heavily corrected, coated, split, suede, laminated, and bonded materials can obscure the faces.

Sort by tannage, temper, thickness, and finish

Make a matching scrap for every materially different lot or area. A trial is not representative when it differs in tannage, temper, finish, thickness, direction, or moisture condition.

Firm vegetable-tanned leather: usually supports itself well enough for long, controlled shavings. Dry or poorly conditioned stock can resist and tear; that is a signal to verify conditioning guidance, not to push harder.

Soft or elastic chrome-tanned leather: can stretch, wrinkle, or gather ahead of the blade. It needs continuous support, a keen edge, a restrained bite, and shorter controlled passes. If it still distorts, hand skiving is not controlled on that setup.

Oil-rich, waxed, pull-up, coated, printed, patent, metallic, laminated, bonded, split, or suede material: may mark, separate, stain, or change adhesion when flexed, clamped, taped, or dampened. Follow the leather and finish suppliers' instructions.

Loose or variable belly/flesh areas: can change thickness and stretch within one pass. Shorten the working field, support immediately behind it, and re-read the taper after every pass.

Dense or unusually heavy stock: if a keen 55170 or 50100 will not take a controlled shaving without force, this row's exact tool union has reached its limit. Do not turn added force into a substitute for the correct process.

Grain direction and stretch direction

Leather is not mechanically uniform. Flex matching scrap in both directions and note which orientation stretches or bunches more. Arrange the pass so the work stays supported and the edge does not gather ahead of the blade. When a direction produces lifting, tearing, or excessive stretch, reverse the scrap or change the pass direction before touching the workpiece.

Moisture is a controlled variable, not a default

Do not wet leather simply because it is difficult to skive.

Check the tannery, leather supplier, finish supplier, and adhesive instructions. A treatment acceptable for one vegetable-tanned hide can stain, distort, transfer dye, soften, delaminate, or change adhesion on another material.

If light casing is explicitly permitted, prove it on matching scrap first. Apply moisture evenly from the flesh side, wait for free surface moisture to disappear, and compare cut quality, color, dimensions, finish, and dry-back with an untreated control.

Never skive saturated leather. Stop when the fibers become mushy, the piece changes dimensions, the surface shows tide marks, or the knife begins taking an uncontrolled bite.

Let the trial return to its specified assembly condition before judging it. A lap or fold that lies correctly only while damp is not proof of the dry assembly.

Dry and protect the knives immediately after any permitted damp work. The line document identifies the heritage knives as hardened high-carbon steel; moisture left on the blade creates a corrosion risk.

Hyde supplies no casing formula for this job.

Bench, support, light, and layout

Support surface

Use a stable, clean, smooth, non-yielding work surface large enough to support the whole skive field. The surface must not rock, contain a seam under the pass, or let the leather sink. A yielding pad changes blade presentation during the stroke and can turn a shaving pass into a dive.

Protect the blade and bench by arranging the raw edge at or just beyond a controlled support edge so the knife can finish clear of the leather without striking stone, glass, metal, a clamp, or another hard object. If the selected slab could chip, shatter, or expose a sharp edge, do not use it.

Work holding

Support the leather immediately behind or beside the active field.

Keep the support hand, clamps, weights, cords, and bench hardware outside the complete projected blade path and beyond the exit.

Use a fixture, hold-down, or expendable handling tab when the piece is too small to control at a safe distance. The fixture must not mar the grain or conceal the blade path.

Do not hold the work in the air, against the body, or in the palm.

Do not pull the knife toward the torso or support hand.

Reposition the work instead of reaching across it or twisting the wrist to finish a corner.

Light and marks

Use strong raking light across the flesh side. It makes ridges, hollows, and transitions visible before assembly. Mark the limit of the skive on the flesh side with a method approved for that leather; test marking tools for show-through, staining, or finish damage.

The skive boundary comes from the pattern, fold line, stitch layout, or lap design. This guide does not invent a width. Mark the full-thickness keep-out areas as clearly as the material allows, especially around stitch lines, holes, edges that remain exposed, and high-load transitions.

PPE and knife-control gate

PPE follows the employer's hazard assessment, local rules, and the material and chemical safety information. At minimum, assess:

cut-resistant protection for the non-knife hand and body areas that could enter the travel path;

eye protection for sharpening, honing, or any operation that can release particles;

a cut-resistant apron or guarded fixture when a dropped or deflected blade could reach the body;

ventilation and chemical-specific gloves when cleaners, dyes, finishes, conditioners, or adhesives are present.

A glove is not cut-proof and never substitutes for path control. Select fit and protection so the glove does not reduce grip or bunch near the edge. Never test sharpness on skin.

Before every setup:

Inspect both knives for a loose handle, damaged edge, corrosion, contamination, or a bent blade. Quarantine a defective knife.

Confirm the work support cannot move.

Trace the entire stroke and exit with the knife still off the leather.

Move hands and hardware outside that envelope.

Establish where the knife will stop if it slips or exits early.

Remove loose items and distractions from the bench.

Keep only the active knife exposed; store the other so its edge cannot be contacted.

Prove the setup on matching scrap

The scrap trial is the control specimen for the job.

Cut or select scrap from the same leather, area, orientation, finish, and condition as the workpiece.

Mark the same boundary and preserve the same no-cut features.

Begin with the 55170 laid low enough to skim rather than wedge.

Use light forward force and let a keen edge cut. If force rises, stop. Do not answer resistance by steepening the blade or adding body weight.

Make one short pass that exits clear of the raw edge.

Inspect the shaving and the leather. A controlled pass leaves a continuous or consistently small shaving, a supported surface, and no grain distortion.

Repeat only after the prior pass is read. Adjust presentation, direction, support, or edge condition one variable at a time.

Fold, stack, stitch-test, or dry-fit the scrap in the same way the actual part will be assembled.

Record or retain the successful scrap as the visual and tactile reference.

If the scrap cannot meet the functional check without a cut-through, grain damage, stretching, or uncertain remaining strength, the process is not proven. Stop; do not “practice” on the project piece.

Controlled-pass workflow

Establish the field

Place the flesh side up, the raw edge toward a safe exit, and the marked limit visible in raking light. Keep the full-thickness side of the boundary protected. Confirm the leather is flat and continuously supported.

Start at the raw edge

Begin where a small error is least likely to invade the keep-out area. Present the 55170 low to the flesh side and use a slicing motion rather than a square push. The pass travels toward and clears the raw edge; it does not terminate against the grain or stop under load within the leather.

Remove a shaving, then read it

Make one restrained pass. Stop and check:

Did the leather stay flat?

Did the grain remain unmarked and undistorted?

Is the shaving controlled rather than a chunk?

Is the new surface continuous rather than torn or washboarded?

Did the blade remain outside the marked keep-out area?

Any “no” pauses the work for correction.

Build the taper with overlap

Use ordered, overlapping passes so each new cut blends into the last. Do not attack isolated low spots repeatedly without rereading the whole field; that produces hollows. Work progressively from the raw edge toward the marked limit while reducing the bite as the transition approaches.

No fixed pass count is valid. Pass count is whatever the proven scrap and functional assembly require, with inspection between passes.

Use the 50100 only where its shorter geometry is needed

For a corner or short transition, reposition the part so the 50100 can lie safely and leave the leather without crossing a hand or clamp. Use the same restrained, overlapping logic. Do not rotate the knife in a planted cut, pry out a shaving, or use the square end as a punch.

Recheck the complete field

After each round:

sight across the flesh side in raking light;

feel from the full-thickness field toward the edge with the knife set down and secured;

compare against the approved scrap;

check paired or mirrored pieces together;

perform the applicable dry fold, stack, or lap test.

Correct high areas with another light, blended pass. Do not chase appearance after the functional test is met.

Stop at function, not at a generic thickness

Stop when the edge matches the proven scrap and the assembly check passes while the grain and specified strength-bearing areas remain intact. There is no authorized universal remaining-thickness instruction.

Task-specific finish checks

Folded or turned edge

The fold follows the intended line.

The turn lies without a hard step or unintended hinge.

The grain shows no cut, craze, stretch wave, or color change.

Corners close without a hidden stack of full-thickness material.

The edge retains enough substance for the specified construction and service.

Stitched allowance

The stacked allowance lies evenly.

The stitch line and holes remain outside damaged or over-thinned material.

Thread tension does not pucker or tear the test assembly.

Mirrored allowances feel and behave alike.

Lap or overlap

The dry-fitted joint has no abrupt step.

Both pieces retain a smooth transition into full thickness.

The skived faces are clean and compatible with the specified adhesive preparation.

Moisture, oil, honing compound, marker, or handling contamination has not entered the bond field.

Adhesive selection, surface preparation, open time, pressure, cure, and bond verification belong to the adhesive system and lap-joint procedure, not to this knife guide.

Scrap, rework, and stop-work rule

Skiving is subtractive. A cut-through, severed grain, critical thin spot, or weakened stitch field cannot be restored by burnishing, adhesive, or another pass. Preserve the failure as diagnostic scrap, correct the setup, and remake the part when the project standard requires it.

Edge care, cleanup, and storage

Secure the work and place the knife down before touching the skived field.

Remove loose fibers without dragging a finger along the edge.

Keep honing compound, oil, corrosion residue, and cleaning chemistry out of any future bond field.

Clean and dry both knives according to the approved high-carbon-steel maintenance procedure.

Protect each cutting edge in storage. Do not leave either knife loose on the bench or in a drawer.

Record damage, sharpening needs, and any material-specific setup that must be repeated.

This guide deliberately supplies no stroke count for stropping and no sharpening angle.

Honest process boundaries

Hand skiving is appropriate when the operator can control every pass and verify the part. It is not automatically the right method for production quantity, very soft leather, dense heavy stock, full-width splitting, precision thickness specifications, or parts too small to hold outside the cut path.

cutting the panel to pattern is a separate through-cut operation;

removing grain for a bond is a separate surface-preparation decision;

choosing and applying cement is a separate controlled process;

sole-grade skiving is a separate job row;

machine setup is outside this hand-knife guide.

History — the anonymous shoe-bench pattern

Skiving and square-point shoe knives are inherited trade patterns, not named inventions. It cites the pattern in a 1927 Sheffield Barnsley catalog, in Smithsonian shoemaker-tool holdings, and as a “shoe knife, square point” in a First World War U.S. Army saddler's chest inventory. Those references establish a mature shared pattern; they do not establish one inventor.

Hyde's own history places Isaac P. Hyde's Southbridge, Massachusetts knife work in the early-to-mid 1870s. It is that the company grew inside New England's shoe-and-leather factory economy and still catalogs the thin skiver and square-point patterns that economy used.

Exact-model claims: 50100 is “Square Point Knife #2,” 3" × 11/16" × .058"; 55170 is “Thin Skiver Round Point Knife,” 5-1/8" × 5/8" × .042". Those names and dimensions are the only model-specific claims taken directly from the accepted-claims packets.

No official operating specification: the accepted claims provide no verified application text, material list, work-surface instruction, blade angle, bevel angle, skive width, target depth, pass count, moisture formula, PPE prescription, or sharpening schedule. Technique is clearly labeled authored bench practice.

50100 role: corner and correction work is the authored application role implied by the row assignment and short geometry; the accepted model packet itself names no factory operation.

History: no inventor claim; Hyde founding remains “early-to-mid 1870s” because Hyde sources conflict on 1870 versus 1875. Barnsley, Smithsonian, and Army references are inherited through the operator fuel and line document rather than represented as newly reverified here.
