How to Skim Coat a Wall

Job: bury a damaged, textured, or rough wall under a thin new skin of joint compound and make it dead flat.
Time: one to two days per room — two or three thin coats, and each has to dry before the next. Labor per coat is an hour or two; the compound sets the calendar.
Difficulty: feel, not force. The knife rhythm is learned in the first hour, and the job forgives you — every flaw in this coat is fixable in the next one. That forgiveness is the whole psychology of skim coating.
Everything else: joint compound (Step 2 settles which kind), clean water and a mixing bucket, drill with a mixing paddle, stain-sealing primer for damaged surfaces, drywall primer for the finished wall, 150–220 grit sanding screens or sponges, a bright work lamp on a cord (your raking light — as important as any knife here), drop cloths, and a second bucket of rinse water for tools.
Before the first coat
Confirm skim coating is actually the answer. It is, when: you want a level-5 finish (the smoothest drywall standard — a thin skim over the entire surface, the spec for glossy paint and hard side-light); you're erasing texture (orange peel or knockdown that's gone out of style); or you're recovering a wall wallpaper wrecked — torn face paper, gouges, a hundred paste scars that would take longer to patch one at a time than to bury all at once. Skim coating is NOT the answer for walls that are out of plane (that's a plaster or reframing problem — skim follows the wall it's given, hollows and all), and not for surfaces that are actively failing: loose paint, bubbling paper, or crumbling plaster must come off first, because compound is only as attached as whatever it's sitting on.
Choose your compound honestly — setting-type vs ready-mixed.
Setting-type ("hot mud") comes as powder and hardens by chemical reaction in a fixed window — the number on the bag is minutes to set, and the clock does not care how much is left in your pan. It shrinks very little, builds deep fills in one pass, and lets you recoat the same day. The costs: you mix every batch, the window rules you, and the hard-setting varieties sand like concrete — if you use hot mud, use an "easy-sand" formulation for anything you'll ever touch with paper.
Ready-mixed (all-purpose or lightweight topping) comes in the bucket, dries by evaporation, stays workable all day, and sands easily. It shrinks as it dries and it will not tolerate thick fills — but skim coats are thin by definition, which is why ready-mixed is the right default for this job. The pro pattern worth copying: setting compound for any deep pre-fill repairs, ready-mixed for the skim coats themselves.
Prime the damage BEFORE you skim — this is the step everyone skips and regrets. Torn drywall face paper and old wallpaper-paste residue are the two saboteurs. Wet compound soaks into exposed brown paper and it bubbles and blisters — after you've skimmed, when it's expensive. Water-based compound over invisible paste re-activates the paste and crawls. The fix for both is the same: seal the whole damaged surface with a stain-blocking or paper-sealing primer and let it dry fully. It turns a porous, unpredictable surface into a uniform one that takes compound evenly. While it dries, pre-fill any real gouges and divots with the flexible putty knife (02100) — the skim coat is a skin, not a filler, and it will faithfully reproduce any crater you leave under it.
Mix to the right consistency: thick yogurt, off the drill. Ready-mixed compound is stiffer in the bucket than you want on the knife. Transfer some to a clean bucket, add water a splash at a time, and run the mixing paddle until it's smooth and just barely slumps off the knife — the texture of thick yogurt or mayonnaise. Too thick and it drags, tears, and leaves ridges; too thin and it slides down the wall and shrinks into pinholes as the excess water leaves. Sneak up on it: you can always add water, but adding powderless compound to over-thinned soup never quite recovers. Mix only what you'll use in a session, and keep the bucket walls scraped down — dried crumbs falling into clean mud become the grit that scars every pass.
Set your raking light now, not later. Put the work lamp low against the wall, beam skimming across the surface. This is the light that shows every ridge, hollow, and pinhole while you can still fix them — the same hard side-light that will expose the wall through a window every afternoon for the next twenty years. Skim under the light you'll be judged by.
The skim
Load and lay it on — generous, low angle, in sections. Work in sections about three feet wide, top of the wall to bottom. Butter the front half of the 10–12" knife using the 6" knife from the pan, then sweep the compound onto the wall with the blade at a low angle (15–20°), letting a thin, even layer transfer. This pass is the LAY-ON: its only job is delivery. Don't chase perfection here — you're loading the wall, not finishing it. Aim for a film about an eighth of an inch or less; a skim coat is called a skim coat because of this number.
Then wipe it down — the two-pass rhythm that IS skim coating. Immediately, before the section loses its wet shine, come back over the same section with the knife at a high angle (45° and steeper) and real pressure, pulling top to bottom in long overlapping strokes. This pass is the WIPE-DOWN: it shears off the excess and leaves only the tight film that fills the surface's own lows. Lay on, wipe down, move over one section, repeat — that two-stroke waltz is the entire technique. Keep the blade clean between pulls (scrape it over the pan edge every stroke or two); a crumb on the edge scores a tram-line through everything it touches. Flex the knife's pressure so the corners ride slightly off the surface — the corners are what dig.
Handle edges and corners with the small knife, and don't fight the big blade where it can't win. Inside corners, around outlets (power off, plates off), above trim: switch to the 6" knife and pull away from the corner rather than into it. A 12" blade in a corner gouges one wall while skimming the other. The big knife owns the field; the small knife owns everything within six inches of an obstruction.
Let it dry, scrape the nibs, and run the next coat the OTHER way. Ready-mixed skim coats dry in a few hours to overnight depending on thickness and humidity — dry means uniformly light-colored with no cool damp feel. Before recoating, hold the knife nearly flat and scrape the whole wall down: ridges and nibs slice off dry compound with a satisfying click, in seconds, without sanding. Then run the second coat perpendicular to the first — if coat one ran vertically, coat two runs horizontally. Each direction fills the ridges and hollows the other direction leaves; two crossing thin coats beat one thick coat everywhere, in flatness, in drying, in shrinkage.
Inspect under the raking light and let the light write the punch list. After the second coat dries, rake the lamp across the wall and mark every flaw with a pencil (never a pen or marker — ink bleeds through paint for years). Hollows and scratches get a tight third pass just where needed; many walls want a full third coat, some are done in two. The standard is simple: when the raking light finds nothing you can feel with your palm, you're done coating.
Sand lightly — if you skimmed tight, this is minutes, not hours. 150–220 grit on a pole sander for the field, a fine sponge for corners, light pressure, and the raking light moving with you. The wipe-down passes were the real smoothing; sanding here is deburring, not shaping. If you find yourself leaning on the pole, stop sanding — that spot needs another skim, not more grit.
Prime before anything else touches it. Fresh compound is thirsty and porous; paint straight over it gets drunk unevenly and flashes — every pass of your knife visible as sheen differences in the finish coat. One coat of drywall primer (PVA-class) unifies the surface and is not optional. This is doubly true if this skim was chasing a level-5 finish: the primer is part of the spec, not a courtesy.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
Ridges and tram-lines in every pass. A nicked or dirty blade, or the knife's corners digging.
Pinholes — a rash of tiny craters as the coat dries. Air in over-whipped mud, compound too thick to flow into the surface's pores, or an unsealed porous surface drinking the water out of the film. Mix slower (paddle fully submerged), thin the batch slightly, prime porous surfaces first (Step 3), and kill pinholes with a tight second wipe-down pass — pressure, high angle, forcing mud into the holes rather than bridging them.
Overworking — the surface was good three strokes ago and is getting worse. Compound has a window; when it starts to tack, further strokes tear and roll it instead of smoothing it. The knife tells you — drag turns to stutter. Walk away. Whatever's wrong now costs one minute in the next coat and ten if you keep polishing. Skim coating rewards the worker who quits each section one stroke early.
Chasing wet compound — trying to fix a divot in half-set mud. The single most common beginner loop: touch a flaw in a setting film, leave a bigger flaw, touch that. Wet flaws are only fixable while the whole section is wet; after that, every correction needs the surface around it to still move, and it doesn't. Same discipline as above: mark it, dry it, fix it dry.
Hot mud went off in the pan. It happens to everyone once. Do not add water and try to revive it — setting compound is a chemical reaction, not a drying process, and re-tempered mud has no strength. Dump it, wash the pan and knife immediately (cured compound bonds to steel), mix less next time, and remember the bag number is a set time, not an invitation.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
Skim coating is drywall reaching back for the standard plaster set. For two centuries the finish of a good wall was three-coat wet plaster — scratch coat, brown coat, and then the finish coat, a few millimeters of lime putty troweled glass-smooth, which the trade called the skim. Drywall replaced wet plaster after the Second World War because it needed a fraction of the labor and none of the drying weeks, but it gave up that final troweled skin — a taped drywall wall is smooth at the joints and merely paper everywhere else. The modern skim coat, formalized as the industry's "Level 5" finish, is the admission that the old standard was right all along: to make gypsum board look like plaster, you put the skim back.
