This guide does not invent a numeric edge angle, a proprietary chemistry, a replacement blade, disassembly, or a one-product-fits-all notch treatment. Choose cleaning and corrosion-control materials for compatibility with the residue, the whole tool, and the material it will cut next.

Begin with identity, not “roofing knife”

Read the model or reconcile the physical knife to a controlled inventory record. Record 22310, 22320, or 67830; the incoming condition; where it was used; what contacted it; and why it left service. If identity cannot be proved, tag and segregate it. Do not identify it solely by handle color, a remembered silhouette, or the fact that it came from a roofer’s pouch.

Classify only what Hyde documents.

The 22310 is pointed by name: Short-Point Roofing Knife. Its exact record also proves high-carbon cutlery steel and a hardwood handle.

The 22320 is a roofing knife with a stiff high-carbon-steel blade. Do not make point-restoration decisions from the picture.

The 67830 is straight and notched by name and description. It is sold as a handled knife on a family page titled “Hook Knives,” but its exact selected variant is Straight Single Ply. Do not sharpen it as a hook and do not convert its hand-filed notch into a shop-filed feature.

Record lifecycle status honestly. None of the exact sources says “replaceable blade,” identifies a refill, gives an opening method, or supplies a fit statement. Treat 22310 and 22320 as fixed, maintainable knives—not blade-change hosts—and never disassemble them to perform routine care. Record 67830 as hardwood-handled, straight, and hand-notched; alteration of its filed feature remains unsupported.

Remove the knife from service before diagnosis

The incoming knife is not ready stock while its edge, residue, attachment, or identity is unresolved.

Move it to a controlled bench. Do not maintain or trial it at roof height, and never carry an exposed edge loose in a pocket, bag, vehicle compartment, or mixed bin.

Preserve abnormal-damage evidence before cleanup. Photograph the complete tool after impact, chemical, heat, moisture, or suspected reshaping. Routine dullness needs no investigation, but cleanup can erase the distinction between residue, corrosion, wear, and damage.

Contamination decides whether inspection may continue

Roofing work can put asphalt, mineral grit, adhesives, primers, seam chemistry, dust, moisture, and unknown demolition residue on a knife. They do not share a universal removal method.

Name the contamination and clean compatibly. Determine the actual shingle, membrane, adhesive, primer, cement, coating, or demolition material. Use the least aggressive method compatible with that substance, the blade, hardwood where present, the joint, and the next material. Wipe loose dirt first. Unknown exposure means quarantine; do not smell, heat, abrade, soak, or dissolve residue to identify it.

Keep liquid out of the joint and dry completely. Do not soak a fixed handled knife. Wipe away cleaner residue and dry the complete tool promptly; a contaminant cleanup medium must also be compatible with blade, handle, joint, and any hand-filed feature.

Reject universal chemistry. Mineral spirits is not a synonym for “roofing-knife cleaner,” and oil is not compatible with every future cut or membrane system. Select cleanup and post-care materials for the actual residue and next-use compatibility. Do not leave a transferable solvent, oil, or inhibitor film on an edge that will touch a material the film can stain, weaken, interfere with, or contaminate.

Do not sharpen through residue. It can spread contamination, load the abrasive, and hide defects.

Follow the site’s hazardous-material determination. This guide neither diagnoses it nor invents handling or disposal instructions.

Inspect the complete tool without touching or changing the edge

Inspection decides whether any supported next action remains.

Start with handle and attachment. Reject movement, an opening at the joint, cracks, splits, missing material, swelling, softening, burns, projections, or an uncontrollable grip. Do not tighten, pin, rivet, glue, wrap, or disassemble. A bench restraint may secure a sound tool; it is not a repair.

Inspect the blade body. Look for bend, twist, crack, deep pit, missing steel, heat discoloration, heavy corrosion, or prior grinding. Do not flex-test or straighten it; a keen blade can still be structurally unfit.

Inspect the model-specific geometry.

22310: check the short point for breakage, bending, gross rounding, or reshaping. Read the existing bevel in good light and note any section already thinned past a practical sharpening life.

22320: inspect the edge and blade shape without naming a point, hollow, or contour the text never supplies. Read and follow the bevel actually present; documented stiffness does not authorize flex-testing.

67830: inspect the straight blade and visible hand-filed notches for deformation, cracking, corrosion, burrs, or prior filing. Add no file or abrasive to a notch.

Inspect optically, not on skin. Under light, record reflected flats, rolls, chips, corrosion, or an altered bevel. Do not test on a thumb, fingernail, hair, clothing, or an unsupported paper slice.

Choose a disposition.

Maintain: identity and contamination resolved; 22310 or 22320 is structurally sound; the existing bevel is legible; ordinary dullness or a small roll can be corrected without changing the point/profile.

Refer: a possible repair exceeds this guide, the original bevel cannot be distinguished, substantial stock removal would be required, or the 67830 notch needs evaluation.

Replace the whole tool: serviceable equipment is needed and no component replacement or field repair is documented.

Quarantine: any required fact or test remains unresolved.

Maintain the sound 22310 or 22320 without inventing geometry

Secure the complete tool. Work on a stable bench with the blade and handle restrained against slipping while keeping the working edge accessible. Orient the edge away from the body and holding hand. Do not use the restraint to bend, straighten, crush, or disassemble the knife.

Follow the existing bevel—do not choose a number. Mark or sight the sound bevel and hold an appropriate fine stone or fine file so it rides that face. If the tool rocks across the shoulder, misses the apex, or the bevel has been ground away beyond recognition, stop. No numeric degree figure in a generic knife chart outranks the geometry already on this knife.

Use short, controlled strokes. For a fine stone, use controlled edge-leading strokes where the stone and workspace allow; if the abrasive maker specifies another safe motion, follow that method. A fine file cuts on its maker-specified working stroke—lift or unload it on the return. Keep contact on the established plain cutting edge, remove the least steel needed, and work evenly enough to avoid a hollow, heel step, faceted bevel, or heat.

Preserve the point and profile. On 22310, finish each stroke before it rolls around or clips the named short point; do not turn the point into a needle or round it away. On 22320, follow the edge shape present without inventing a point name or new contour. Never chase a deep chip by grinding the rest of the edge back to it.

Raise and remove the burr deliberately. Work only until a small, continuous burr shows that the apex has been reached; a large wire edge means needless steel loss. Switch sides only as the existing bevel calls for, reduce pressure, and use alternating light strokes or a compatible deburring method to remove the burr without rounding the apex. Inspect under light: no loose wire, rolled foil, reflected flat, new chip, or edge hook may remain.

Keep 67830 in its own lane. Hyde’s exact current page establishes the hardwood handle and identifies the notches as hand-filed. Clean and dry the complete knife compatibly, inspect the blade, handle, joint, straight profile, and notches, then return it only if the existing workplace method authorizes its unchanged condition.

Protect clean high-carbon steel appropriately. After 22310 or 22320 is fully dry, apply only a minimal corrosion protection compatible with the complete tool, storage system, and material the edge will contact next. Wipe away excess and leave no transferable film. If no compatible protection is known, keep the knife dry and isolated while that choice is resolved rather than coating it by habit.

Confirm the exact SKU and current product record. Do not salvage a blade or handle from another knife, and do not transplant the 67830 among variants on the family page.

Controlled post-maintenance verification

Verification proves the specific cleaned and maintained knife, not a factory-new edge or a universal sharpening angle.

Verify the maintenance chain first. Record model, incoming condition, contamination, cleaning method, abrasive type, existing-bevel judgment, burr removal, corrosion protection if used, structural inspection, trial material, result, and disposition. Retain any manufacturer-service receipt.

Repeat the complete-tool inspection. Confirm the knife is clean, fully dry, securely assembled, and free of unresolved corrosion, cracks, bends, handle defects, and contamination. Confirm that 22310’s short point and profile, 22320’s original profile, or 67830’s straight hand-notched feature was not inadvertently altered.

Make a safe low-consequence trial.

22310: with hands out of the path and the test piece supported, make a controlled slice in clean paper or a safe scrap of the roofing/drywall material intended for the next task. The knife should enter and track without snagging, tearing, steering, or abnormal force. A paper pass checks edge continuity; representative material checks the intended cut.

22320: use the same safe paper or representative-material check for its scoring/cutting edge. Do not turn Hyde’s asphalt-shingle prying statement into a destructive proof load.

67830: do not improvise a notch test. Where an established K422 inspection or maker-authorized service procedure exists, follow it; otherwise inspection/clean/dry and unchanged geometry are the limit of this guide.

Read failure conservatively. Drag, tearing, wandering, abnormal force, handle movement, new damage, residue transfer, a remaining burr, or uncertainty fails the test. Reinspect once.

Release to one status. Service-ready requires identity, compatible cleaning, drying, sound construction, a controlled edge and safe trial for 22310/22320, and protected storage. A 67830 release preserves its hardwood-handled, hand-filed-notch identity and follows the established workplace or manufacturer method.

Storage, transport, and next-use control

Store only after disposition. A dirty-return or quarantined knife must not share the service-ready location. Keep state and model readable without exposing the edge to a blind reach.

An approved control must isolate the point/edge/notch without changing it, retain the knife, and remain dry and uncontaminated.

If no proved carrier exists, do not improvise transport. Keep the knife isolated at the controlled station and obtain the missing storage/transport decision. Cardboard, tape, a rag, a pouch pocket, a dashboard tray, or a mixed toolbox is not declared safe by this guide.

Keep corrosion and residue boundaries visible. The 22310 and 22320 are documented high-carbon steel, so dry them promptly and protect them from storage moisture. Any oil, wax, inhibitor, or coating must be compatible with the handle, storage system, and next material, and excess must be wiped away. The 67830’s steel is unstated, so keep it clean and dry without assuming it needs—or tolerates—the same protectant.

Inspect again at issue. Storage can introduce moisture, impact, edge contact, contamination, or loss of identity. Recheck the visible complete tool and its recorded status before it returns to a pouch or bench. A prior pass does not override changed condition.

What goes wrong—and the correct branch

“Push harder so the file cuts faster.” Excess pressure produces deep scratches, facets, heat, and needless loss. Secure the tool, use an appropriate fine abrasive on its cutting stroke, and stop when a small burr proves the apex has been reached.

“The burr will disappear in use.” A wire edge is weak and can fold or break away. Reduce pressure and deburr deliberately, then inspect and trial the edge.

“67830 is on the Hook Knives page, so sharpen the inside of a hook.” The selected variant is Straight Single Ply.

“The asphalt came off, so the knife is clean.” Appearance does not establish residue absence, corrosion condition, or readiness. Follow the approved path and inspect.

“The blade is sharp; only the handle moves slightly.” Sharpness does not restore attachment. Remove the complete tool from service; no field joint repair is documented.

“A distributor blade looks like it fits.” No replacement fit is documented. Do not disassemble, force, shim, drill, or transplant parts.

“The 22320 warranty guarantees a replacement.” Hyde’s current terms and evaluation control the outcome. Preserve the tool and evidence; do not promise it.

“The K422 passes a scrap cut.” An improvised cut cannot validate or restore its notch.

“Rust is only cosmetic.” Corrosion at or near a working edge, notch, or blade joint requires evaluation. A deep pit, crack-like indication, or profile loss is not a sharpening project.

“Keep grinding until the chip disappears.” A deep chip can require enough stock removal to change the point or profile.

Can I sharpen the Hyde 22310 or 22320? Yes, when the fixed knife is sound and its existing bevel remains legible. Clean and dry it, secure the complete tool, use an appropriate fine stone or fine file to follow that bevel, make short controlled edge-leading or abrasive-maker-appropriate strokes, remove the burr, preserve the point/profile, wipe it clean, and make a safe paper or representative-material trial. Do not invent a numeric angle.

Should I file the 67830’s notch? No. Hyde identifies a hardwood handle and says the notches are hand-filed; their function, tolerance, and restoration geometry remain unresolved. Inspect, clean, and dry the knife without altering those features.

Are the blades fixed or replaceable? The sources show handled knives and identify no replacement blade, compatible refill, opening method, or blade-change procedure. Replacement status and attachment construction remain undocumented; do not disassemble.

Is the 67830 a hook? Its family page is titled “Hook Knives,” but its selected exact variant is Straight Single Ply. Do not convert a page-family label into blade geometry.

Should I oil a high-carbon roofing knife? Corrosion protection can be appropriate for clean, dry 22310 and 22320 blades, but choose it for compatibility with the complete tool and the material the knife will touch next. Apply the minimum and wipe away excess; never leave a transferable film that can interfere with roofing or drywall material.
