Job: cut a drywall sheet to size with a knife and a straightedge — score the face, snap the core, slice the back paper. No saw, no dust cloud, and a cut end square enough to butt tight.
Time: under two minutes a cut once your hands know the rhythm; give your first sheet ten.
Difficulty: the first skill of the hanging trade — feel, not force. Three sheets teach it.
Everything else: tape measure, carpenter's pencil, a chalk line for rips, and the stacked board itself — the trade cuts standing at the stack, so no sawhorses, and no lifting a fifty-pound sheet flat just to cut it.
Before you start: read the sheet
Know your two kinds of edges. The long edges are factory edges — paper-wrapped and slightly tapered, so the finisher's tape and mud land in a recess. The ends are square-cut straight through the core. Every measurement and every square reference starts from a factory edge; every cut you make lands where it can hide — at the floor line, in a corner, or against framing.
Face out. The face (the lighter finish-side paper) is the side you mark and the side you score: the scored side keeps a crisp paper line, and the ragged half of the break lands on the back, where nobody will ever see it.
Trust the floating hook. The loose rivet on your tape's hook is not slop — the hook slides exactly its own thickness so a hooked pull and a pushed butt-measure read the same. Hook the factory edge and pull; don't "burn an inch" unless the hook is actually bent.
Cut shy. Board should slip into place, never be forced — measure the space, then cut an eighth to a quarter inch under it. A forced sheet crushes its own edge and the corner it was forced past; a small gap disappears under tape and mud.
The cut
Mark it — or don't. Hook the T-square's head over the factory edge at your measurement and the 48" blade spans the sheet in one placement: tick the dimension straight off the graduations, or strike the full line. The production version skips the pencil entirely — hold the blade at your mark and let the knife ride its edge; the square IS the line. When a box or penetration lands mid-sheet, lay out its sides now: the blade is 2" wide, the width of a standard outlet box, so both sides of a box strike off the blade's own edges in one placement. Cutting the opening, though, is its own job with its own tool — the jab saw — in the cut-outlet-and-switch-box-openings guide; round holes for cans and vents belong to the circle cutter's guide. Set the fence. Stand the sheet on edge, face toward you, leaning against the stack. Head hooked over the top factory edge, blade flat on the face, boot braced sideways against the blade's lower end — beside the cut line, not under the runout — and your off hand pinning the head flat. Fingers stay on top of the head, never curled past the edge the knife is about to ride.
Score the face — one confident pass. Blade at moderate extension, lock engaged (the 42047's two-piece positive lock is there to be used; the industrial line's 42050 answers the same worry with a screw collar). Start at the top and draw down the blade's edge in one smooth, committed stroke — knife low, tip biting just through the face paper and into the surface of the core, no deeper. The knife only ever cuts paper; the gypsum does its own breaking. A timid scratch tears paper at the snap; a buried blade wastes edge and gains nothing. Depth is a feeling, and it arrives on your second sheet.
The knife truth: gypsum is rock in a paper envelope, and rock eats steel. The moment the score drags or fuzzes the paper instead of parting it, snap a segment — 8 fresh edges per 18mm blade, 400 on the gang-box wall in a 42359 dispenser — and the edge is factory-new mid-job. The trapezoid knives (42020, 42083) make the identical cut and answer dullness with a flip and a swap instead; crews that also lever a knife into framing carry them and accept the trade. What board does not want is a 9mm blade — that width is for wallpaper and film, and it flexes under fence pressure; this cut is about stiffness, not steering.
Snap — the clean hinge. Steady the keep side with one hand, grip the offcut, and fold it briskly away from the scored face — or pop a knee or palm behind the line if you're positioned at the sheet's back. Done right it is one crack, full length, in one beat, and the halves fold backward on an intact strip of back paper. That paper is the hinge, and it is the whole reason the method works — don't tear the halves apart; the hinge is holding your cut edge straight for the next move.
Slice the back paper. Fold the offcut around the hinge to a right angle or past it, reach behind, and run the knife down the crease of the fold — the paper is under tension there and parts with almost no pressure, and the stroke is guarded inside the open V. Swing the offcut through and it drops free. (Thin offcuts can be snapped through — fold sharply back against the hinge and the paper tears — fine where the edge won't show; the sliced hinge is the crisp one.)
True the edge and dry-fit. A snapped edge carries crumbs and a slight rag — a few strokes of the 09985 pocket rasp shave it flush and square. If the edge needs more than truing — a back-bevel so a field-fit butt closes tight, a shaved long point, paper burrs pared clean at a corner — that is drawn-knife work, and the drawn-cut trade knives own it: see the trim-and-detail-cut-drywall guide rather than muscling it with the rasp. Offer the sheet up; if it binds, take it down and rasp again — never force it home.
Stand-and-snap variants
Crosscuts are the cut above: sheet standing at the stack, square hooked over the top factory edge. Every crosscut referenced off a factory edge is automatically square — which is why factory-edge discipline is really joint discipline: layout error compounds sheet to sheet, and the factory edge resets it to zero every time.
Rips (lengthwise): the T-square's blade runs out at 4 feet, so a rip line is the chalk line's job — square marks at both ends, snap once, score freehand to the line. The production alternative is the pinch-and-slide: pinch the tape at the rip width with those fingertips riding the sheet's long edge as a moving fence, hold the knife's blade at the tape's hook, and walk the length of the sheet — the knife scores as the fence hand gauges. One practice sheet, then no line at all.
Angles: the 09034 is a fixed square — no protractor head — so angled cuts get marked point-to-point, connected with the chalk line or a straightedge, and scored to the line.
Narrow strips: under a couple of inches there's too little core to break clean off one score. Score both faces on the same line — laid out off the same edge so the scores land opposite each other — then snap; or score once and rasp to the line. The narrowest slivers come off in pieces no matter what; plan the layout so they land where that doesn't matter.
Place the edges deliberately. Tapered factory edges pair with tapered edges at flat seams — two recesses make the finisher's valley. Cut edges go where they vanish: floor line, inside corners, door and window framing. A cut edge meeting a tapered edge mid-wall builds a hump the finisher must feather a foot wide to hide — a hanging decision the taper inherits forever.
Spent segments are sharps. Snapped-off tips go in a container, not the floor sweepings — the dispose-of-used-blades-safely guide covers the honest options, including dispensers built with used-blade chambers.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
The score wanders. The knife left the fence — side pressure too light, or the stroke hesitated. Re-seat the square, hold the blade firmly against the fence edge, and commit to one smooth pull. If the tip skates instead of biting, the edge is gone: snap a segment.
Torn, fuzzy face paper. A dull edge drags paper instead of parting it, and a too-shallow scratch tears at the snap. Fresh segment, slightly firmer bite, one pass.
A ledge in the score. Two passes that didn't share a groove. One confident pass beats two careful ones; if you must deepen, ride the fence again so the second stroke lands inside the first.
The corner breaks off. Either the score stopped short of the sheet's edges — run every score fully off both edges — or the offcut hung unsupported at the snap and levered the corner out. Steady the offcut and snap with one crisp motion, not a slow bend.
The snap crumbles instead of cracking. Score too shallow, bend too slow, or the board is damp. Deepen the score in the same groove and pop it sharply. Site-wet board never snaps clean — cut from a dry sheet and send the wet one to scrap duty.
The cut end is out of square. The head wasn't seated tight, or you referenced a cut edge. Re-hook on factory, re-strike. When a run of joints starts drifting, stop inheriting the error: re-square the next sheet from its factory edge and take the correction in one intentional cut.
The back paper won't part. You're slicing the outside of the fold instead of the crease, or fighting with a dull tip. Fold past 90°, cut into the V from behind, fresh edge.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
Score-and-snap is older than drywall — it is the glazier's method, moved from glass onto a board that was built to break the same way. Gypsum board's constitution — brittle mineral core, tough paper skins — makes a scored line a stress concentrator and a snap a straight cut, which is why the hanging trade has never needed a saw for a straight cut in the century-plus since Sackett's patented board (the wallboard story itself, Sackett board to Sheetrock®, is told with primary sources in this store's drywall-finishing pages).
