Replace the Pads on a Pad Edger
Job: Decide whether a guided paint edger pad presents a replacement case, preserve the exact tool/refill identity, perform only authorized cleanup and inspection, and hand the assembly off for model-specific pad service.

A gated identification, inspection, cleanup, and service-handoff procedure
Difficulty: Moderate. The physical work may be small; the hard part is refusing a plausible-looking refill when the exact fit and attachment method are not established.
This guide does not choose a cleaner or personal protective equipment for an unknown coating.
Start with the identity gate, not the old pad
Record all three identities before opening a refill or disturbing the installed pad:
the model marked on the tool, head, package, or retained instructions;
the complete model and fit wording on the replacement package; and
the model of the application tool actually in hand, not the model remembered from an order or copied from a product title.
The current evidence does not close that join automatically.
There is one positive service route:
Exact packaging may supply part of the identity join, but fit wording alone does not invent the service actuation.
Direct observation is a rejection gate only. A visible mismatch, obstruction, damage, or conflict can reject a proposed pad or system. Apparent geometric agreement, an intact as-found assembly, or a dry non-damaging comparison cannot positively establish fit, release motion, attachment orientation, installation actuation, or service authorization.
“It looks about right,” a family resemblance, the shared word *edger*, the incomplete phrase “for 9500,” or a successful dry comparison does not pass.
Decide whether the pad is worn or merely loaded
Do not replace on a calendar. No current exact source establishes a service-life interval for these pads.
First ask whether the pad has completed a coating job and is still wet or contaminated. Do not use an unapproved liquid to discover whether the pad will recover. Do not infer that a pad is washable from another edger, another paint, or general shop practice.
A replacement case is observable when one or more of these remains true:
the working face is torn, shedding, permanently folded, or visibly missing material;
the edge that establishes the paint boundary is damaged or no longer holds its original continuous shape;
the pad has shifted, bunched, or detached from its carrier;
cured contamination remains after the permitted cleanup process and makes the working face visibly uneven;
the pad no longer remains stationary during the dry verification that its current instructions permit; or
the exact manufacturer instruction says to replace it for the observed condition.
A cleaning or reinspection case, not yet a replacement case, is a pad that is paint-loaded but remains securely located and returns to a uniform, usable condition after the exact coating/tool-prescribed cleanup. “Uniform” here is an observation against the pad's own undamaged areas or a verified unused exact replacement, not a claim about undocumented fiber softness, thickness, or chemistry.
If the head, guide components, carrier, or mount is cracked, bent, seized, or unable to retain its existing pad, changing only the consumable does not repair the tool. Quarantine the head for exact-model service guidance.
Prepare a controlled, dry maintenance station
Finish the coating operation and move the tool away from open paint. Follow the coating maker's instructions for stabilizing or cleaning the loaded pad before handling it. Let the assembly reach the maintenance state required by the tool and coating instructions.
At the bench:
Protect the surface so a dropped head or released part is not damaged.
Illuminate the pad perimeter, backing, guide side, and every visible retaining feature.
Photograph the complete head from the working face, back, guide edge, and each side.
Photograph all model marks and the refill package wording.
Photograph how the old pad sits as found. This record preserves an observation; it does not prove that the observed orientation is correct or authorize reproducing it.
Keep the replacement sealed until the identity gate has been reviewed. If opening is necessary for comparison, preserve every label and insert.
Do not begin while the head is overhead, attached to an unstable pole, or held in one hand. If the exact instructions require detaching or retaining a pole, follow them; this guide does not invent a pole-release motion.
Inspect the attachment without attempting removal
Look, do not probe.
Trace the visible boundary between pad, backing, carrier, and head without moving any part. Record any feature that the current exact instructions name as a release or retainer. Geometry alone does not name a feature, establish its function, or authorize operating it, even when one travel path appears visually obvious.
the pad-to-head boundary cannot be seen;
a surface might be bonded, but no exact instruction identifies it as bonded or explains release;

Do not add or remove adhesive, loosen a possible fastener, bend a possible catch, or choose a working-edge orientation by analogy. None of those constructions is established for this union.
There is no generic removal script in this guide.
Use only its stated release points, movement, orientation, installation method, retention check, and return-to-service rule. If the physical head differs from the illustration or wording, stop; the instruction may belong to another revision.
Route B — observation-only rejection and handoff
record the exact tool, head, refill, packaging, and instruction identifiers;
photograph the assembly from all accessible sides without operating any feature;
reject a proposed refill for any visible identifier, outline, backing, opening, notch, channel, tab, recess, stop, keyed-feature, clearance, or damage conflict;
complete only cleanup explicitly permitted by the coating and exact tool instructions; and
Do not operate a visible retainer, move the pad, or use a dry test to discover the mechanism. A clean visual match is not a pass; it only means this rejection inspection found no visible conflict.
Use comparison only to reject incompatibility
Compare only surfaces and identifiers already visible without disturbing the installed pad. In either case, the proposed 95001 pad may be rejected for a mismatch; a complete apparent match cannot create a positive fit or installation authorization.
Check, side by side:
every printed or molded identifier;
overall outline and the position of the working edge;
the backing's shape and thickness where those affect seating;
every opening, notch, channel, tab, recess, stop, or keyed feature actually present;
the location and form of every surface that engages the head;
clearance around the actual guide components; and
whether the replacement can occupy the same as-found position without covering, loading, or obstructing another component.
Any mismatch is a fail, including a feature present on one pad but absent on the other. Do not trim, punch, sand, stretch, compress, shim, re-drill, re-bond, or transfer a backing to make the refill fit. Observable comparison cannot establish it.
Inspect accessible head surfaces at the same time. Use only the permitted cleanup method. Do not scrape or dissolve unknown retention surfaces. If an actual guide component is visibly displaced, obstructed, or damaged, or if the carrier is damaged, stop; a new pad must not be used to conceal a head fault.
Installation remains model-specific
Under Route A, the authorized service provider follows the current instruction for the exact model, revision, and refill, including any named orientation, engagement sequence, confirmation mark, replacement-only component, and retention verification. Do not supplement it with generic edger advice.
Under Route B, do not install. As-found photographs, keyed-looking features, a non-damaging dry comparison, and the way an already-separated pad appears to align cannot establish:
that 95001 fits 95000 or 95008;
which face or edge is the attachment datum;
the correct working orientation;
which feature is a release or retainer;
the permitted engagement sequence or actuation; or
when the assembly may return to service.
Dry observation is a rejection check, not proof of fit
A dry observation may reveal a reason to reject an assembly; it cannot validate an otherwise unauthorized removal or installation.
Static inspection
Without actuating the tool, compare an assembly serviced under Route A to the exact instructions. Any gap, buckle, loose edge, displaced guide component, unexplained part, identifier conflict, or departure from the instruction is a fail.
Movement and functional checks
Perform a retention movement, unloaded practice stroke, pole-mounted check, or other actuation only when the current exact model-specific manufacturer instruction calls for that check and states how to perform it. Follow only that method. Stop on any unexpected resistance, lift, creep, rattle, bow, position change, interference, rocking, noise, or incomplete engagement. Do not increase force to quantify or overcome the failure.
Reject: any conflict or failure observed during an authorized check.
Never use paint to “bed in” an uncertain refill.

Can I copy the removal motion from another pad edger?
A historical patent or neighboring product can explain the tool class but cannot establish this head's attachment, release, or orientation.
What if the old pad is glued on or held by a fastener?
