How to Repair Plaster Cracks in Old Walls
Job: make a crack in an old flat-plaster wall disappear only after the plaster, lath or masonry base, building, and moisture conditions have been shown fit for a surface repair.

The register's exact Hyde union is 01840 + 09213.
Finish standard: the repaired area is attached, dry, compatible with the original plaster, continuous under a flat hand, quiet under a gentle press, unreadable under raking light after primer, and free of a hard texture or sheen boundary. A repair that looks smooth but still moves is not finished.
Time: diagnosis plus however many stabilization, fill, reinforcement, finish, dry-or-cure, and decoration visits the selected system requires. Lime, gypsum plaster, setting compound, air-drying compound, bonding agents, primers, temperature, humidity, suction, and layer thickness all run different clocks. No universal working time, recoat interval, or “done by tomorrow” promise is made here.
Difficulty: diagnosis is the hard part. A stable hairline in bonded plaster may be a small fill. A recurring crack can be the visible edge of loose keys, lath movement, moisture, or building movement. The knife stroke cannot settle that question.
The exact Hyde tool graph — two products, two different moments
Its in-line, full-tang joint-knife silhouette gives direct pressure feedback for pressing compatible repair material into a prepared crack, embedding the repair system's tape where specified, shaving the first coat tight, and working close to trim or irregular plaster. Stainless tolerates repeated wet cleanup. It is flexible, not a crack-opening chisel, pry bar, delamination probe, or plaster washer.
Its backed, top-handled blade carries a broad finish pass across the repaired line and lets sound wall on both sides act as the screed. It is not the tool for opening the crack, packing a deep void, re-keying plaster, or embedding tape into a narrow bed. The aluminum back resists rust; the blue-steel blade still must be cleaned and dried as its instructions require.
The working sequence is 01840 for controlled fill/embed → 09213 for the wider, thinner blend. The products are complementary, not substitutes, and neither one supplies structural stabilization.
Required non-union tools and materials: raking light; pencil; straightedge; clean mixing vessel and potable water if the selected material requires them; a small stiff crack-opening or scraping tool specified for the preparation; soft brush and a dust-extraction method suitable for the assessed material; drop protection and containment; the complete compatible plaster-repair system chosen in this guide; its bonding agent, base/patch material, reinforcement, finish material, primer, and abrasive or damp-finish method as applicable; equipment for correcting the moisture or attachment defect; and PPE selected from the product SDS, hazard assessment, and applicable rules.
No generic tape, filler, “plaster patch,” joint compound, bonder, primer, or texture product is silently linked. Those components must be selected as one approved system for the actual plaster and finish.
Diagnose first — seven conditions that look like “a crack”
Stable hairline in bonded plaster
The line is fine, both sides remain in one plane, the plaster does not click or pump under gentle pressure, the surrounding surface sounds and feels consistent, there is no active stain, and the crack has no known history of returning.
This is the smallest repair class. The selected compatible patch/finish system may call for cleaning and direct filling without reinforcement. “Hairline” describes appearance, not proof of stability; the press, sound, moisture, and history checks still control.
Stable opened crack with sound shoulders
The crack has a visible gap or failed old filler, but both sides are firm and co-planar. Loose crumbs stop at sound plaster. The crack may be suitable for an opened, filled, and reinforced repair, provided the chosen system approves the substrate, opening method, fill, and reinforcement.

Moving or recurring crack
The line changes when pressed, opens and closes with season or occupancy, returned through previous filler or tape, continues from a door or window corner, follows a ceiling/wall junction, or has a dated history of repeated repair.
Stop the cosmetic method. Determine whether the cause is lath/framing movement, a stress concentration, settlement, vibration, thermal or moisture cycling, or a transition between unlike materials. NPS states that the building must be stabilized before cracks are repaired. Reinforcement can bridge limited residual movement only when the named repair system permits it; it cannot turn active movement into a static wall.
Delaminated plaster — keys or bond have failed
One side sounds hollow compared with nearby wall, moves independently, clicks against the base, bulges, sags, or sheds material beyond the crack. On wood lath, the plaster keys may have broken. On masonry or gypsum lath, the bond may have failed.
Reattach, re-key, consolidate, or replace the loose field under a plaster specialist's or current repair-system specification before filling the line. The National Park Service describes loose-plaster conservation and re-keying as skilled work; a surface tape and feather over a moving sheet merely hides the hinge until it prints again.
Moisture-driven damage
The wall is damp, stained, salty, soft, friable, blistered, mold-affected, or cool/wet at the crack; a roof, plumbing, flashing, condensation, or masonry moisture path is unresolved.
Find and correct the water source, assess the cavity and substrate, and allow the assembly to reach the moisture condition required by the chosen repair system. Do not seal damp plaster behind low-permeance filler or primer. A stain blocker can isolate a dry residual stain only after the source and substrate are resolved; it is not a leak repair.
Structural or life-safety warning
Escalate for appropriate professional evaluation when the crack is accompanied by displacement across the line, a growing or branching pattern, diagonal cracking from openings, a bowed wall, sagging ceiling, displaced trim, binding openings, masonry cracking behind the plaster, sudden appearance after impact or construction, or repeated failure across multiple surfaces.
Also stop where the wall or ceiling is part of a listed fire-, smoke-, acoustic-, shaft-, or protected historic assembly whose required repair has not been identified. A decorative skim cannot restore an unknown assembly rating.
Coating crack, not plaster crack
Sometimes only paint, wallpaper, calcimine, old filler, or a brittle finish coat has cracked while the plaster below is sound. Use a magnifier and a controlled edge inspection under the applicable hazard method. If the discontinuity ends at the coating, route the job to coating preparation and compatibility rather than excavating sound plaster.
Do not turn crazed paint into a plaster trench. Repair the layer that failed.
Stop gates — do not open or sand the wall when any answer is unresolved
Movement: either side pumps, clicks, changes plane, or the crack is demonstrably recurring.
Attachment: the surrounding plaster is hollow, bulged, sagging, friable, or detached from its base.
Moisture: an active source, damp substrate, mold condition, salt movement, or unexplained stain remains.
Structure: displacement, growth, correlated opening/masonry movement, ceiling instability, or other structural evidence is present.
Hazardous old layers: lead-based paint or asbestos-containing patching, joint, texture, or plaster material may be disturbed and has not been assessed under the applicable process.
Significant finish: decorative painting, historic wallpaper, ornamental plaster, stenciling, or another character-defining finish crosses the work.
System compatibility: the plaster type, base, old coating, bonder, fill, reinforcement, finish, and primer have not been bound to a current approved repair system.
Assembly: the wall/ceiling has a required listed performance and its repair detail is unknown.
Passing one gate does not waive another. The first safe action can be investigation, stabilization, conservation, or referral rather than filling.
Hazard boundary — old coatings and compounds change the method
Old plaster work often begins by cutting, scraping, drilling, or sanding painted and previously patched layers. Those are disturbance operations.
EPA says common renovation activities that disturb paint in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities can create hazardous lead dust. Paid work may fall under the Renovation, Repair and Painting rule and its certification/work-practice requirements. This guide does not teach lead testing, removal, encapsulation, cleanup clearance, or abatement. Stop and use the applicable lead-safe/certified path before disturbing the layer.
CPSC identifies older patching and joint compounds and textured paints as possible asbestos-containing materials and warns that sanding, scraping, or drilling can release fibers. The federal consumer-product ban concerns intentionally added respirable free-form asbestos in consumer patching compounds; it does not certify an existing wall by age or appearance. This guide does not teach asbestos sampling, removal, encapsulation, disposal, or abatement. Stop and use a qualified assessment and the applicable regulated-material path.
A negative result for one layer does not clear every layer in a repair stack. Old walls commonly carry repeated paint, wallpaper, skim, patch, and texture campaigns.
After the material assessment supplies an authorized disturbance method, return to the mechanical diagnosis.
Bind one compatible plaster-repair system
Start by identifying the plaster and its base
Record what is actually present:
lime-rich traditional plaster on wood lath, reed, masonry, or another historic base;
gypsum plaster or a gypsum-rich later coat;
a multi-coat wall with unlike base and finish coats;
gypsum board or gypsum lath under a plaster finish;
cementitious, clay, or other composition;
an old repair crossing the original work;
painted, wallpapered, calcimined, sealed, or otherwise coated plaster.
Do not identify plaster by color alone. Building date, exposed cross-section, known repair history, hardness, aggregate, lath/base, and qualified material analysis may all matter.
Compatibility is a system property, not a bucket label
A defensible repair set answers all of these together:
Is the existing plaster and base sound enough to retain?
What preparation and suction control does the manufacturer or conservation specification require?
Is a bonding agent required, prohibited, or conditional?
What fills the prepared crack or loss?
Is reinforcement required, and what exact paper, mesh, scrim, or other material is approved?
What finish material may cover the fill and reinforcement?
How does the repaired area dry or cure, and what conditions are required?
What primer is compatible with the finish plaster, old coating, and decoration?
Does the system remain vapor-compatible with the historic wall?
Do not assemble answers from unrelated packages. A bonder from one manufacturer, base from a second, mesh from a proprietary third system, ready-mix joint compound from a fourth, and high-build primer from a fifth is not a tested recipe merely because each item says “repair.”
Traditional/historic-material path. For lime-rich or otherwise significant historic plaster, use a conservation specification or compatible traditional plaster system that matches the original work's relevant strength, suction, vapor behavior, aggregate, and finish. NPS Preservation Brief 21 specifically provides basecoat/finish compatibility guidance and favors preserving historic plaster with traditional wet-plaster techniques. Modern hard gypsum or cement-rich material is not a universal substitute for softer, vapor-open lime work.
Named manufacturer gypsum-repair path. For sound gypsum plaster where the substrate and project fit, USG's *Plastering Technical Guide — Repair and Resurfacing Systems* is one complete example: it calls for paper joint tape embedded in a named setting-type joint compound for cracks; wide/deep cracks are raked, dampened, filled with the named setting-type compound, allowed to set, then taped and separately coated/feathered. It also gives separate bonder/basecoat/veneer-plaster methods for holes, sagging work, dissimilar materials, and resurfacing.
That example is valuable because it keeps the components together. It is not permission to transfer USG's preparation, compounds, mesh, coat schedule, or resurfacing thickness to a lime wall, a different brand, an unknown old patch, or a wall outside the guide's substrate conditions.
Make a one-page system bind before mixing
Place the current technical data and SDS for the selected preparation, bonder, fill/base, reinforcement, finish, primer, and decoration in one work packet.
substrate and coating limitations;
required soundness and moisture condition;
opening and cleaning method;
permitted fill depth per lift and required number of lifts;
water, mixing, slake, working, set, dry, and cure directions;
temperature, humidity, ventilation, and suction requirements;
permitted sanding or damp finishing;
primer/decoration readiness;
cleanup and PPE.
Where documents conflict, stop and obtain the responsible manufacturer or conservation specifier's direction. Do not average two instructions.
The repair method — only after all stop gates pass
Map the crack and preserve the evidence
Photograph the line in ordinary and raking light. Mark its ends lightly in pencil outside the repair field and note changes in direction, branching, stains, old tape, fasteners, hollow zones, and material transitions. Record whether it is known to recur.
The map prevents a later feather coat from erasing the evidence before the cause has been understood. It also makes post-repair readback possible.
Press, tap, and plane-read the surrounding plaster
With gentle hand pressure, compare each side of the crack to nearby known-sound wall. Use a light, non-damaging tap method appropriate to the finish and listen for a sharp change in response. Bridge the area with a straightedge or the clean edge of 09213 without flexing it into the wall.
Firm, quiet, co-planar wall: continue.
Relative movement or clicking: return to movement/attachment diagnosis.
Hollow field: map the boundary and route to stabilization.
Ridge or step across the line: determine whether it is old filler, displaced plaster, or structural movement before removing anything.
Do not use 01840 or 09213 as sounding hammers.
Protect the room under the assessed dust method
Remove or cover contents, isolate the work as required, protect floors and openings, and keep occupants outside the work zone. Shut down or protect air pathways when the hazard plan requires it. Select eye protection, gloves, clothing, and respiratory protection from the material SDS, exposure assessment, and applicable regulations.
For ordinary assessed gypsum/plaster dust, prefer source capture and the lowest-dust finish allowed by the system. NIOSH has documented high dust exposure during drywall-compound sanding; the lesson transfers directly to patch finishing: make the knife do the flattening and reserve abrasion for the smallest correction.
This paragraph is ordinary dust control, not a substitute for lead or asbestos requirements.
Remove only material that cannot carry the repair
Using the specified stiff opening tool—not either flexible Hyde finish knife—remove failed old filler, loose paint or plaster edges, friable crumbs, and contamination until the shoulders are sound. Keep the tool under control and work away from attached historic fabric.
Do not widen a stable hairline by habit. Open it only when the selected system requires an opening for fill or reinforcement. Do not import a V-groove width, angle, or depth from a different material system. The correct endpoint is sound geometry that the chosen fill can contact, not the largest trench the wall will tolerate.
If the crack keeps widening because the shoulders crumble, stop. The job has changed from crack finishing to plaster loss/substrate repair.
Clean without polishing or flooding
Remove dust and loose residue with the system-approved brush, vacuum/source-capture, or other assessed method. Remove incompatible oil, paste, calcimine, gloss, or sealer only by the approved preparation.
Control suction exactly as the chosen plaster system directs. Some traditional dry backgrounds need managed dampening; some bonding systems require a particular clean/dry or tack condition; some coated surfaces require a bonder. Flooding an old wall, misting every crack, or applying universal PVA by reflex are not neutral acts.
Readback: the crack shoulders are firm, free of loose dust, prepared to the chosen system, and still pass the movement/moisture checks.
Stabilize before fill
If diagnosis uncovered loose plaster, complete the specified reattachment, re-keying, washer/fastener, injection, lath, or replacement operation and verify it before returning here. Protect decorative surfaces and use a qualified plaster conservator where the retained finish demands it.
Readback after stabilization:
the field no longer pumps or clicks;
fasteners or conservation repairs are seated and covered by their specified system;
the plane is restored without crushing the plaster face;
the repair boundary is sound;
no active water or structural condition remains.
Do not let a surface coat become the proof of attachment.
Apply bonder or suction treatment only where specified
Use the exact bonder, dilution, coverage, condition, and open-time instructions in the selected system. Keep it off sound historic finishes when the system does not call for whole-surface treatment.
Too little bond can release; an incompatible or over-applied film can block suction, trap moisture, or create a slick interlayer.
Fill the opened crack or loss
Mix only the selected fill/base material, with its stated water and mixing method. Use 01840 where its flexible six-inch edge can press material into the prepared line and strike the surface without bridging over a void. For depth or geometry beyond the knife/system's permitted single application, use the system's required lifts or basecoat method.
Load a clean portion of the blade.
Cross the crack so pressure drives material into contact with both sound shoulders.
Change direction and inspect; a surface skin over a hollow line is not filled.
Strike back only to the plane required for reinforcement or finish.
Stop when the material reaches its working limit; do not add water to revive a setting mix unless its instructions explicitly permit it.
The 01840 is a placement and control tool. It does not compact loose lath, replace missing basecoat, or certify bond by feel.
Let the fill reach the system's required state
“Hard,” “set,” “dry,” and “ready to recoat” are not synonyms. A chemically setting material may be hard while still retaining moisture; a lime plaster may require protected curing; an air-drying patch can skin over while soft below.
Follow the system's actual next-operation condition. Check the crack, surrounding old plaster, room conditions, and layer—not the clock from another product.
Readback before reinforcement:
no shrinkage void has reopened;
no edge has debonded;
the field remains attached;
moisture and stain have not returned;
the fill is at the specified plane and condition.
Reinforce only with the named system component
Not every stable hairline needs tape. When the selected system calls for reinforcement:
use the exact paper tape, fiberglass mesh, scrim, or fabric it specifies;
place it in the exact base, bedding compound, or plaster layer it specifies;
keep it centered and flat without wrinkles, dry skips, floating edges, or a hollow tunnel beneath;
follow the system at crossings and material transitions.
For the USG crack-repair example, the named route is paper joint tape embedded in the named setting-type joint compound, followed after set by a separate coat that covers the tape and feathers the repair. A self-adhesive mesh method, a lime-plaster scrim method, and a veneer-basecoat mesh method are different systems. Do not merge their tape placement or compound chemistry.
Use 01840 for an in-line bedding/wipe when the reinforcement system permits a joint knife. Press out excess while preserving a continuous bond layer. If tape bubbles, mesh floats, or an edge lifts while wet, correct it now rather than burying it.
Cover the reinforcement and build the repair plane
After the required set/dry/cure state, remove only isolated nibs by the allowed low-dust method. Apply the system's cover/base or finish coat with 01840, keeping material over the reinforcement while tapering the shoulders onto sound plaster.
The objective is not to make the crack line low by scraping harder. It is to establish a continuous shallow plane that the wide knife can blend. If the reinforcement remains visible, add the specified material; do not sand through it.
Readback: no reinforcement edge, bubble, hollow, ridge, or reopened line is visible under cross-light.
Feather with 09213 — width without a universal width promise
When the repair system allows a broad knife finish, move to 09213. Load the center/inside of the blue-steel blade and keep the outboard edge light. Let sound plaster on both sides guide the backed blade while the middle carries the repair coat.
Make each necessary finish pass:
thinner than the build below;
far enough onto sound wall that the transition no longer reads;
with pressure biased toward the feather edge;
released while the blade is still moving so it does not stamp a stop ridge.
The correct feather width comes from the crack crown, wall waviness, reinforcement, texture, raking light, and selected system—not a generic dimension. Old plaster is rarely perfectly planar. A wide knife should average its character, not grind it into drywall-flatness.
Clean 09213 on the pan or board between passes; one cured crumb under a ten-inch edge scores the whole feather. Wash and dry the blue-steel blade promptly under its product guidance.
Dry/cure, then perform the full readback
Wait for the selected system's inspection condition. Then test from both directions:
Press: no movement, clicking, or edge release.
Raking light: no hard ridge, trough, tape edge, or knife stop.
Straightedge/knife bridge: no abrupt step; a gentle inherited plaster wave is not automatically a defect.
Flat hand: no sharp transition or grit.
Visual crack map: the original line and branches remain closed.
Moisture/stain: no return.
Bond: no blister, hollow edge, or powdering.
If any mechanical symptom returns, stop decorating and reopen diagnosis. Primer is not allowed to hide a failed readback.
Finish with the system-approved low-dust method
Prefer tight knife work and, where the material permits, damp finishing or other low-dust correction. If sanding is permitted, use the manufacturer's abrasive and readiness guidance, source capture, light pressure, and the applicable PPE/containment.
Sand only tool marks and feather edges. Do not expose reinforcement, polish one hard island into the softer old finish, or erase the surrounding plaster's intentional texture. Stop if the abrasive loads with soft material; the layer is not ready.
Remove residue by the approved method. Never dry sweep suspect old-layer debris, and never treat a household vacuum as hazardous-dust control.
Match texture before primer
Read the original wall beyond the repair:
smooth trowel or polished plaster;
restrained hand-trowel movement;
sand or aggregate texture;
roller or brush stipple from later coating;
knockdown or other applied texture;
a historic finish that should be conserved rather than imitated casually.
Make a sample using the compatible finish material and the actual application tool. Extend the texture transition irregularly beyond the geometric repair edge so it does not read as a patch-shaped island. Do not add sand, aggregate, paint, or another modifier to a proprietary repair product unless its maker permits it.
Texture is judged after the sample reaches its specified dry/cure state and under the room's real side light. A smooth repair in a textured wall is still visible even when perfectly flat.
Prime as a system handoff
Use the primer approved for the cured repair material, retained old coating, and finish paint. Prime the complete worked and abraded zone—not only the crack line—so old plaster, new repair, and sanded coating do not absorb paint as separate stripes.
Some traditional lime finishes and historic coatings use different decoration systems from conventional acrylic primer/paint. Preserve vapor behavior and follow the conservation finish specification rather than sealing them reflexively.
After primer reaches its inspection condition, repeat the raking-light and flat-hand readback. Uniform color often reveals geometry the mottled repair concealed. Correct that geometry with the compatible system before finish paint.
Buyer tests — choose from the exact union
“Stable hairline, bonded wall; the compatible system calls for a controlled fill only.” → 01840 leads. Its six-inch, in-line flexible stainless blade supplies placement and pressure feedback. 09213 may not be needed if the approved fill finishes invisibly without a broad blend.
“Stable opened crack; the selected system calls for tape embedded in a bedding material.” → 01840 embeds and wipes the controlled first coat; 09213 feathers only after the system's required set/dry state.
“The repair is reinforced and sound, but the shoulder reads in side light.” → 09213. The wide backed blade blends the transition; it does not add attachment.
“The wall is damp, hollow, or moving.” → neither knife yet. Correct moisture, attachment, or structure first.
“I need to chisel a V and scrape old paint.” → neither knife is the opening tool. 01840 is flexible stainless finishing steel; 09213 is wide blue-steel leveling steel. Use the assessed preparation tool specified by the repair system.
“I want one tool to pack a deep plaster loss and finish it.” → neither product makes that a one-tool job. Use the compatible base/repair system and its placement tools, then bring these knives in only at their finish roles.
“I leave wet tools in the wash bucket.” → 01840 tolerates wet cleanup by virtue of stainless. 09213's aluminum back resists rust, but its blue-steel blade must be dried; choose and maintain accordingly.
Exact false-neighbor calls

The exact union contains no stiff scraper, plaster washer, injection adhesive, lath tool, paper tape, mesh, plaster, joint compound, bonder, abrasive, primer, texture tool, moisture instrument, or hazardous-material equipment. Name those honestly as required non-union components; do not turn two linked knives into a universal kit.
What goes wrong — symptom, cause, recovery
The crack returns through the center. Active movement, missed delamination, inadequate stabilization, or an incompatible/unreinforced system. Stop coating. Re-run movement, attachment, moisture, structure, and system checks.
A parallel crack forms beside the tape or feather. The reinforced strip is stronger than the adjacent weak plaster, or the repair edge ended inside a moving/hollow field. Map and stabilize the full affected area; wider finish alone moves the symptom.
The repair sounds hollow or clicks. Bond or plaster attachment failed. Remove only under the assessed hazard method and return to stabilization/substrate preparation.
The fill falls out of the opened line. Dust, uncontrolled suction, incompatible material, no required bonder, insufficient contact, or a movement defect. Do not solve bond failure with a wider topcoat.
Paper bubbles or an edge lifts. Incomplete bedding, skinned compound, dust, or an over-tight wipe starved the bond layer.
Mesh or scrim prints through. Reinforcement was placed in the wrong layer, not fully embedded, or exposed by sanding. Follow the named system's cover coat; do not polish reinforcement fibers.
The fill shrinks into a groove. The material exceeded its permitted application, was over-watered, or recoated before the required state. Use the specified lifts and mix; do not refill by guessing a thicker batch.
The coat tears, drags, or pills under the knife. Material is outside its working window, the substrate suction is wrong, or cured debris is on the blade. Stop and follow the product direction; water is not a universal reset.
Hard ridges follow 09213's corners. Both corners are loaded, pressure is flat and excessive, or the edge carries a cured crumb. Clean the blade, keep the outboard corner light, and release pressure while moving.
The repair is flat but visible after paint. Texture, porosity, primer, sheen, or touch-up boundary differs. Match texture, use the compatible primer over the complete worked zone, and repaint to a natural break if the coating system requires it.
The old paint blisters around the wet repair. The retained coating is weak or moisture-sensitive, preparation was incomplete, or the repair trapped moisture. Stop, assess the layer and hazard boundary, then use a system approved for that substrate.
A stain or salt line returns. Moisture remains active. Stop and correct the source; stain primer and plaster compound are not water management.
The surface powders while finishing. Unsound old plaster, incompatible repair, incomplete cure, or over-abrasion. Do not prime over powder; identify the failed layer and return to compatibility/attachment.
Blue-steel rust marks appear. 09213 was left wet or dried with compound on the edge. Clean, dry, and maintain the blade under its product guidance; do not drag corrosion into a finish pass.
The repair looks too flat and new. The old wall's hand texture was erased over a rectangular zone. Reproduce the compatible texture from a sample and soften the transition; finish quality means continuity, not maximum smoothness.
Why old plaster cracks — and why preservation comes before the patch
Traditional flat plaster is a layered wall, not a skin. Base coats key mechanically through wood lath or bond to masonry, reed, metal, gypsum lath, or another base; a finer finish coat supplies the visible surface. The wall can remain serviceable for generations because the layers distribute load and moisture together. A crack is therefore a report from that assembly: sometimes ordinary shrinkage or a stable stress release, sometimes broken keys, damp material, moving framing, or settlement.

Gypsum wallboard later moved the same finishing logic into a panel system: reinforcement over a discontinuity, then widening coats that make the raised strip disappear. Hyde's 01840 and 09213 belong to that drywall-finishing lineage, but their geometry transfers honestly to a compatible plaster repair—the narrow in-line knife controls the reinforced first work, while the wider backed knife feathers the finished plane. The tools transfer. The substrate chemistry and repair specification do not.
No single inventor or date for plaster crack repair is claimed. Opening, filling, scrim reinforcement, lime finishing, and later paper-tape/setting-compound systems are successive trade methods, not one universal recipe.
