How to Remove Old Glazing Putty from a Sash

This guide ends where its sister begins: reglaze-a-single-pane-window starts from a rabbet cleared to bare, sound wood — this page is how the rabbet got that way. Old putty out is the mandatory first act of every reglaze, and it is its own trade motion with its own tools: a demolition job at jewelry scale.

Time: fifteen minutes to an hour per pane, and the putty sets the clock, not you. Loose runs pull free in minutes; fossilized linseed putty under heat and hammer is slow, deliberate work. A six-light sash is a half-day the first time you do one.

Difficulty: placement, not strength. The hammer supplies the force; your entire skill is where the edge points. Everything hard about this job happens within an inch of glass.

Before you start: read the window before you hit it

Assume lead, and set up for it — the load-bearing boundary of this whole page. Nearly every hand-puttied sash in America predates 1978, sash paint is exactly where lead paint concentrates, and a window is a friction surface that has been grinding its painted edges into dust for a century. Removal — scraping, chipping, hammering putty off wood — is precisely the disturbance the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule regulates: paid work on pre-1978 homes requires a certified firm and lead-safe practices, and window work is singled out — window replacement and demolition are covered regardless of square footage; the minor-repair exemption that forgives small jobs elsewhere does not apply here (EPA — Lead RRP Program, EPA — RRP information for contractors). The working translation, homeowner or pro: sheet below the work, mist as you go so chips fall instead of flying, HEPA-vacuum the zone after — and never soften putty with open flame, and keep any heat gun below 1100°F, the thresholds above which EPA's lead-safe guidance prohibits heat outright because lead volatilizes into fume (EPA — Steps to Lead Safe Renovation, Repair and Painting).

Label each light of a multi-light sash on the tape as you go; old openings are not interchangeable.

Diagnose the putty — what it is and how it failed, because the failure picks the method. Press the 02950's chisel corner into the fillet at a few points. Rattling loose, lifting in runs, or already missing — the bond is dead; most of the job is clearing, not demolition (step 4). Crazed and cracked but still gripping — classic oxidized linseed putty; this is the heat-and-hacking-knife core of the guide (steps 5–6). Smooth, rubbery, knife-resistant — a modern acrylic compound or, worse, someone's caulk bodge; hammers are useless here, slitting and peeling wins (see the fail list). One scope honesty while you're looking: if the glass is held by nailed wooden beads instead of a putty fillet, that's trim work, not glazing — pry gently per remove-trim-and-molding-for-reuse. And if the sash is steel casement, stop: metal-sash putty over spring clips is a different system this store's glazing kit doesn't cover.

Slit the paint lap. A maintained putty line was painted with the film lapping onto the glass. Score that lap at the putty-to-glass line with a razor corner before anything else, so the fillet breaks free along a cut edge instead of tearing paint unpredictably across the pane.

The removal

Take everything that's already free. Work the 02950's chisel end along the fillet, popping every section that moves and flicking the crumbles out of the channel — the 1-1/4" end exists because it fits *inside* a standard glazing rabbet where wider blades bridge. Follow with a narrow stiff putty knife (02050 or 02150) under the runs that lift. On a badly failed window this pass alone can clear half the sash without a single hammer tap — free wins first, always. (The pocket 5-in-1 says "putty remover" on its box and earns it exactly here: its 2-1/2" blade bridges the rabbet and can't reach the channel floor, so it pops loose runs and crumbles, then hands the job to the 1-1/4" tools.)

Heat, when the putty argues. What's left is bonded. Old linseed putty softens under gentle heat, and soft putty shears in bigger, quieter bites — so heat is the lever you reach for *before* more force. Low setting, nozzle moving, and a scrap-metal or foil shield between heat and glass every second: old panes tolerate thermal shock badly, and a cracked pane converts your careful glass-in job into a glass-out job instantly. Heat a hand-span of fillet until a testing corner sinks in, then work that span while the next one warms.

The struck method — the hacking knife's job, and nobody else's. For putty that heat alone won't surrender — decades-oxidized linseed putty is closer to soft stone than to dough — the trade built a dedicated tool: the 40210, a thick-spined blade on a stacked-leather, triple-riveted handle, the one knife in this store designed to be struck. Bench the sash flat if you can, glass supported. Set the edge into the putty parallel to the glass, cutting into the side of the rabbet — never angled toward the pane — and tap the spine with a steel hammer: short, controlled taps, not swings, walking the blade along the rabbet so the fillet shears off the wood in chunks. The glass plane is your guide; the putty-wood bond is your target. You will feel the blade cut straight through the buried glazing sprigs — the small steel fasteners under the putty — which is exactly the duty that wrecks a chisel's fine bevel and is why this coarse, sacrificial, file-it-back-Sunday edge exists. One store, one struck knife.

Pull the points. With the fillet gone, the glazier's points are exposed — triangular sprigs in the oldest sash, diamond or push points in later work, whatever survived the hacking knife's pass. Pry each one up and out with the 02950's chisel corner, working flat along the glass, and count them as they come — the reglaze guide sets the same number back. Stubs that snapped flush get gripped and rolled out with end nippers; a stub that refuses gets set below the channel floor with a nail set so it can never proud into the new bed.

Glass out — the bench variant. If the pane is leaving: after the fillet and points are clear, the pane is held only by its back-bedding — the thin putty seal behind the glass. Slide a narrow stiff blade between glass and bed at mid-edge (never at a corner, where panes crack first), ease it along each side until the seal breaks, and lift the pane out wearing gloves. From here the job becomes purely pleasant: no glass to protect means the hacking knife, the chisel-edge knives, and honest force can clean the whole rabbet — including the bed face the pane sat on — at triple speed. This is why full restorations pull every pane.

Scrape the rabbet to bare, sound wood. The wall will lie to you and so will the rabbet: cleared is not clean. Bonded putty skin, bedding residue, and paint islands survive the demolition, and new putty over old residue is the crack line of the future. Shave the channel floor and side with the chisel-edge knives riding flat on their bevels — 01240 or 01140 for wet misted work, the .075" 02200 where a compacted ledge needs real force behind a narrow edge, the 07210 where fossil putty hides in corners, and the bent 02070 keeping knuckles clear on long exterior-sill runs. The 12040 assists at rabbet width from the scraper line — brass is soft and dulls faster than steel, which is also what makes it forgiving this close to glass, and mandatory where spark rules apply. Then brush and HEPA-vacuum the channel, and probe the wood with an awl: firm everywhere is a pass; spongy or punky anywhere is rot, and rot is sash carpentry, not glazing — same honest boundary the sister guide draws, because putty over rot is a one-year fix. Putty smears and haze on the pane itself are a razor job on glass, not a knife job in wood: scrape-paint-and-overspray-off-glass.

Hand off. You are now holding exactly what the sister guide calls its starting line: rabbet cleared to bare, sound wood, old points pulled, glass out or intact and ready to re-bed. Do not prime, do not putty — the priming step that decides how long the new fillet lives belongs to reglaze-a-single-pane-window, step 5, and it starts now, before the bare wood sits long enough to weather.

The standing rule the whole page obeys: nothing ever levers against the glass. Not the hacking knife, not a putty knife popping a run, not the chisel corner under a point, not the blade breaking the back-bedding. Every prying edge in this job levers against sash wood, rides parallel to the pane, or slides flat along it — the glass backs tools, it never opposes them. The one motion that touches glass on purpose — the point-driving slide in the sister guide, the razor pass in the glass guide — works *along* the plane, never into it.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

"It's chipping off in penny-sized flakes and taking forever." That *is* the job on well-bonded putty — but escalate softening, not force. More heat dwell, smaller hacking-knife bites, and accept that one stubborn light can cost twenty minutes. Steepening the blade angle to hurry is how panes die.

"The blade keeps skating toward the glass." A dulled edge glances instead of biting, and tired hands let the angle creep. Re-set parallel to the pane, dress the 40210's edge with a mill file — tough-sharp, not razor-sharp — and stop for the day before your control does.

"I cracked a pane anyway." Careful setup shortens the odds; nothing eliminates them on century-old glass — even the pros lose panes. Tape the crack, switch that light to the glass-out variant, and price a replacement per cut-a-replacement-pane-to-size. Budgeting one spare pane per old sash is realism, not pessimism.

"The putty's coming off with wood fibers attached." The putty-wood bond is beating the wood itself — usually on weathered sash. More heat, smaller bites, and keep the edge cutting along the rabbet side rather than diving into it. Minor tear-out disappears under the sister guide's priming and bedding; gouges you can lay a matchstick in are sash-repair territory.

"It's not hard putty — it's rubbery." Modern acrylic compound, or a previous owner's caulk. The hammer is useless and heat just makes gum: slit both faces of the bead — along the glass and along the wood — with a razor or knife corner and peel it out in runs, then scrape the residue cold.

"The sprig stubs won't come out." Grip and roll with end nippers, using the jaw as the fulcrum against wood. A stub that snaps flush gets driven below the channel floor with a nail set — buried steel is harmless; proud steel scratches the new bed and telegraphs through the new fillet.

"How clean is clean enough?" Bare wood, no glossy islands of bonded putty skin, no powder in the corners, and a chisel edge dragged along the channel slides silent instead of ticking. If the blade ticks, something's still bonded.

The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)

The reason this job needs a demolition tool is chemistry: linseed-oil putty never dries, it *oxidizes* — polymerizing slowly harder for decades, until the soft dough a glazier thumbed in during one century has to be chiseled out in another (The Craftsman Blog — glazing putty).
