Job: clear a floor of its adhesive layer, after the covering is up, to the standard the next covering actually demands — a standard this guide makes you pin down before the first stroke, because it changes the job by a factor of three.
Time: the widest spread of any flooring job in this catalog. Knocking latex-mastic ridges down ahead of a floating floor is an afternoon. Wet-scraping a tested-clean cutback field for a glue-down floor is a weekend, plus a skim coat. A floor headed for thinset ends at a rented grinder no matter how well you scrape. Step 3 tells you which of these jobs you have; none of them starts until Step 2 clears it.
Difficulty: labor and patience, with exactly one high-stakes judgment in it — and that judgment belongs to a lab, not to you.
This guide follows the scrapers doc, per the precedent the tear-out guide set; every technique below is planing technique, and there is no struck-tool copy here.
Everything else: an accredited asbestos inspection and lab test where Step 2 requires it — a licensed service, not a store product · garden sprayer or pump bottle, hot water, dish soap · citrus or soy adhesive remover, only where the next floor's manufacturer allows a chemically stripped substrate · heat gun (tested-clean floors, spot duty only) · scrub brush, rags, TSP-substitute · knee pads, gloves, safety glasses, N95 · poly sheeting and painter's tape · contractor bags · a shop vac, HEPA-rated if you can get one · a straightedge for the finish check · and, when the standard turns out to be bare concrete, a walk-behind grinder or shot blaster with HEPA dust extraction — rental-yard equipment this store does not sell, named honestly in Step 10.
Before you start: name it, clear it, and decide where "done" is
Name the layer with your eyes, not a blade. Four adhesives cover nearly every floor that reaches this page, and they identify on sight. Black or brown-black, thin, smooth to lightly ridged, faintly tarry on a warm day — that is cutback, the asphalt-based adhesive of the mid-century slab, and it owns the next step of this guide. Yellow, tan, or amber, standing in combed ridges — latex or acrylic mastic, the carpet-and-resilient adhesive of the more recent past, and the most cooperative material on this page. Honey-colored, thin, and brittle enough to flake — the water-based paste of the linoleum era, which softens with nothing but hot water and patience. Gray, hard, and cementitious, in ridges that ring under a tap — that is not adhesive at all; it is thinset mortar, it does not shear off a slab at any angle, and it is not this guide: chip-and-grind demolition lives in *Demolish ceramic tile and thinset*, and its last bonded millimeter is grinder territory (Step 10). One more modern arrival: the sticky, clear pressure-sensitive gum under recent LVT peels and balls rather than chips, and treats like mastic here. Identify by looking. Do not scrape a test patch to find out — the next step is the reason.
The asbestos boundary — the paragraph this page exists to put first. The adhesive itself — not just old tile above it — is a suspect material. Minnesota's health department, representative of state guidance on exactly this floor, says it plainly: "flooring, including sheet vinyl, floor tiles and any associated paper-like backing, adhesive or glue, can contain asbestos" (Minnesota Dept. of Health — Residential Floor Tile Removal). Black cutback is the classic carrier, and the flooring industry used it — with asbestos fiber in it — deep into the 1980s. You cannot identify asbestos by eye; a lab can, from a sample "a trained and accredited asbestos professional" takes — EPA's words, along with the other half of the rule: undamaged, undisturbed material is left alone, and remodeling is precisely the disturbance that changes its status (EPA — Protect Your Family from Exposures to Asbestos). Scraping an adhesive field is about as thorough a disturbance as a floor can receive, which is why the flooring industry's own removal standard prohibits the shortcuts outright: do not sand, dry sweep, dry scrape, drill, saw, bead-blast, or mechanically chip or pulverize resilient flooring, backing, felt, or asphaltic "cutback" adhesive — materials that may contain asbestos fibers and/or crystalline silica (RFCI — Recommended Work Practices for Removal of Resilient Floor Coverings). Nothing in this catalog is an asbestos control, and no wet-scraping tip below makes suspect material safe to disturb. There is also an honest alternative the test may hand you: sound, well-bonded cutback can often be left where it is and buried under a cementitious skim or self-leveler, with the new floor above — no disturbance, no fibers, and the new floor's manufacturer rules on the assembly. This guide resumes on exactly three floors: tested clean, documented post-boundary new, or professionally abated. And the standing rule for mid-job: if a black or older layer surfaces beneath the adhesive you tested, stop there — the test covered what you sampled, not what was hiding under it.
Decide where "done" is before the first stroke. "Remove the adhesive" is not a standard; the next covering sets the standard, and knowing it now is the difference between an afternoon and a rented machine. Floating floor (click vinyl plank, laminate): the standard is *flat, not bare* — nothing bonds to the slab, so ridges get knocked down to field level, lows get skimmed, and the ruling document is the flatness spec in the new floor's instructions. The fastest version of this job by a mile. Glue-down (LVT, sheet goods, engineered wood, carpet): the ruling document is the new *adhesive's* substrate requirements, and most refuse old adhesive outright. The working trade standard over tested-clean cutback: wet-scrape to a thin, tight, well-bonded film with no ridges, then a cementitious skim or patch coat as a barrier — because water-based adhesives grip cement, not asphalt, and because uncovered cutback bleeds through resilient goods as a yellow-brown stain that never stops coming. New glue straight over old residue is the classic double-failure: the bond fails below while the stain rises above. Tile in thinset: the severest standard on the page. Thinset bonds to clean, sound, profiled concrete — not to any adhesive ever made — so this version ends at bare slab (the grinder, Step 10) or at an uncoupling/crack-isolation membrane whose manufacturer explicitly rates it for use over well-bonded residue. Hand scraping alone will not finish this floor; better to know that standing here. Bare, painted, or epoxy-coated concrete: everything off and out of the pores — grinder from the start.
Set the room up as if dust matters, because it still does. A tested-clean floor still makes real nuisance dust once the field starts drying mid-scrape. Clear the room; poly and tape over doorways and floor registers; fans off — moving air is a dust distributor. Sanding old adhesive is never the answer on either substrate — it gums the paper in seconds and makes exactly the airborne dust the RFCI list exists to prevent. Knees, gloves, glasses, N95: on before the first stroke.
The removal
Wet the field, one section at a time. Hot water with a squirt of dish soap, from the sprayer, over a working section about the size you can scrape in twenty minutes. Let it sit, and re-wet as it dries — time is the solvent: latex mastic and carpet glue swell and cheese up; the linoleum-era pastes practically surrender; cutback does not dissolve in water at all, but stays wet-scraped anyway, because wet work is the dust control the removal standard is built on. Mist repeatedly rather than flooding — puddles find every crack in a slab and every seam in a subfloor, and on wood they are a renovation of their own.
Kneeling, run the 19425 with both hands on its 12" handle, shoulders over the head, and drive with the forearms. Standing, the 19423's 48" handle takes your body weight through a low push. Either way the blade stays low — 15° to 30° off the floor — so the edge planes along the glue line and lifts the layer as a rolling curl; steeper than that and the edge stops shearing and starts riding over the field, or digs its corners into wood. Work in lanes, from cleared floor into bonded material, half a blade-width of overlap: short driving strokes into heavy build, long smooth strokes once a section has softened. Wipe the blade every few passes — adhesive balling on the steel turns a shear into a smear. Where the 5" head can't land — toe-kicks, corners, the last inches at walls and casings — the 12060's 3" bent chisel finishes the room at the same low angle. And across a big field that has already softened, the stand-up 19200/19205 earn their 55" handles: their 20° fixed blade arrives at the bond line from standing height and clears open floor fast, saving the offset heads for the bonded fights.
A dull edge doubles the labor and triples the gouges, and adhesive is an edge-eater by trade.
Heat and chemistry, honestly. Hot water is the only free solvent on this page, and it only works on the water-based half of the problem. For the rest: citrus and soy adhesive removers genuinely soften mastic and cutback, with three bills attached that the can's front label doesn't mention — the dwell time is the label's, not yours, and it is hours, not minutes; the softened smear still has to be scraped *and then washed off completely*, because remover residue is a bond-breaker for whatever glue comes next; and some flooring manufacturers refuse chemically stripped slabs entirely — read the new floor's instructions before opening the can. A heat gun is a spot tool here: it will soften a stubborn patch of mastic at a doorway, but on cutback heat mostly manufactures smear — asphalt shears cleaner cool than warm, which surprises everyone once. Keep heat off anything untested, and ventilate — old adhesives were built from solvents nobody misses. Petroleum solvent-washing cutback is never the move: it thins the asphalt into the slab's pores, spreads the stain footprint, and paints on the very bond-breaker you came to remove. And none of it — ever — goes dry-abrasive: no sanding, no bead-blasting, no grinding without extraction on anything suspect; that is the RFCI prohibition again, and it binds the tested-clean floor's dust habits too.
Wash, dry, verdict. Final pass wet, then scrub with TSP-substitute, rinse, and let it dry completely — verdicts read wrong on damp floors. Run a palm across the field: slick or tacky spots get another round. What remains when the scraping is honestly over is a stain-level shadow, and whether that shadow is "done" is not a feeling — it is the Step 3 standard: floating → straightedge the field, skim the lows, and hand the flatness pass to *Scrape a subfloor flat for new flooring*; glue-down → thin, tight, well-bonded film at most, then the cementitious skim barrier where the adhesive maker allows it; thinset or coating → Step 10 was always coming.
The grinder boundary — where hand tools honestly stop. When the standard is bare concrete — thinset, epoxy, a cutback shadow soaked into the pores, or a commercial field where a scraper-day is a grinder-hour — the tool is a walk-behind concrete grinder or shot blaster with HEPA dust extraction, from the rental yard. This store does not sell that machine, and this page will not pretend an offset scraper substitutes for it. Two boundaries ride with the rental: dry-grinding concrete makes respirable crystalline silica, and the controls — water or vacuum extraction, always — are the substance of OSHA's construction silica standard, 29 CFR 1926.1153; and on any floor that never cleared Step 2, grinding is exactly the "mechanically pulverize" the RFCI list prohibits — which is why the abatement question comes first even for the person planning to rent their way out.
Vacuum the field rather than sweeping it, let the slab dry, and run whatever moisture test the new floor's instructions demand before anything goes down. The flatness pass — ridges, lows, the straightedge discipline — belongs to *Scrape a subfloor flat for new flooring*, and the border runs exactly here: this guide owns the glue; that one owns the geometry.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
"It's smearing, not lifting." Too warm, too wet with remover, or the blade is loaded. Let the section cool and haze off, wipe the steel, shorten the stroke, and stop chasing smear with more heat — cutback shears best cool.
"The blade skates instead of biting." Edge gone or angle too high. Reverse it, swap it, drop the handle until the edge attacks the glue line instead of touring it.
"I'm gouging the plywood." Angle too steep, corners loaded, wood too wet. Flatten the blade, narrow the bite, ease the water — and admit early when underlayment replacement beats archaeology.
"A yellow-brown stain came through the new vinyl." Cutback bleed — the reason the skim-barrier standard exists. After the fact there is no fix that isn't the floor coming back up; before the fact it is one bag of patch compound.
"Nothing sticks where I used the remover." The residue never fully washed off. Scrub with TSP-substitute until rinse water sheets instead of beading, dry, and bond-test a corner before committing glue.
"It's gray and it laughs at the scraper." That's thinset, not adhesive. Wrong guide — *Demolish ceramic tile and thinset*, and a grinder for the last of it.
"Black showed up under the layer I tested." Stop where you stand. The lab cleared what you sampled, not what was under it — Step 2's standing rule, mid-job edition.
"The field dried out and started dusting." Re-wet and keep it wet. A drying adhesive field is a dusting adhesive field, and wet work is the whole method.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
The name is the recipe: "cutback" is asphalt cement literally *cut back* — thinned to trowel grade — with petroleum solvent (Pavement Interactive — Cutback Asphalt), a paving and roofing trick that walked indoors in the 1930s and became the flooring adhesive of the mid-century American slab: spread black, let the solvent flash, set the wood block or asphalt tile or VCT into what stayed (Hardwood Floors Magazine — Encountering Cutback Adhesives). For decades the industry reinforced the whole resilient stack — tiles, backing felts, and the adhesive itself — with asbestos fiber (R&R Magazine — A Brief History of Asbestos in Resilient Flooring), which is why the color black functions as a warning label on this page and the first tool in the walkthrough is a laboratory. The offset scraper doing the honest work has no inventor to name — a bent blade ahead of two hands is a trade pattern, hammered out at benches over generations like the pull scraper and the shave hook beside it in the line — and Hyde has been grinding such edges in Southbridge, Massachusetts since 1875 (Hyde Tools — Our Story).
