How to Reglaze a Single-Pane Window

Written for the person doing the job. This guide starts where its sister guide ends: old putty out is its own job (remove-old-glazing-putty), and it happens first, every time.

Job: re-bed and re-putty one pane in a wood sash — from cleaned, bare rabbet to painted putty line.

Time: two to three hours of tool time for a single pane; a morning for a divided-light sash. Then a cure wait — days to weeks, set by your compound, not by you — before paint.

Difficulty: a light touch and patience, not strength. The one genuinely skilled move in the job — the beveled putty line — is the move the V-blade tool performs for you.

Before you start

Get the old putty out — that is its own job, done first. Removal is a different trade motion with different tools — the 02950's chisel end, heat where old linseed putty won't yield, and traditionally the hacking knife, a thick-spined struck blade that no putty knife should ever imitate. If the wood you uncovered is spongy or rotten, stop — that's sash repair, a carpentry job this guide honestly doesn't cover; putty over rot is a one-year fix.

Assume lead until proven otherwise. Nearly every single-pane puttied sash in America predates 1978, and old sash paint is exactly where lead lives — windows are friction surfaces that grind painted edges to dust every time they move. Any scraping, sanding, or prep on a pre-1978 sash calls for wet methods, containment, and careful cleanup, and paid work on pre-1978 homes falls under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule — window work is a named concern of the rule, not a footnote (EPA — RRP Program). This boundary is load-bearing for the whole job, and it is the main reason the removal guide exists as its own page.

Sort out the glass. Reusing the existing pane: clean both faces now — it will never be easier than out of the sash or before the putty goes on. Replacing it: the pane is cut 1/8" smaller than the opening in each direction — glass must never touch wood, because a sash moves and a tight pane cracks. Measure the cleaned opening at both ends of both axes (old sashes are not square), and either cut your own with the 45700 — the full technique is its own guide, cut-a-replacement-pane-to-size — or have the hardware store cut to your numbers. Dry-fit before any putty touches wood.

Knead the putty and stage the sash. Work a fist of compound in your hands until it's smooth, uniform, and rolls into a clean rope without cracking or sticking. Too oily and slumping — knead it on clean cardboard for a few minutes to draw excess oil. Too stiff — work it warm; cold putty fights every tool in this guide. A single pane reglazes fine with the sash in place; a full divided-light sash is faster and kinder to your back flat on a bench. Rag rule, now and at every oil step below: rags wet with linseed oil or oil primer self-heat as they cure and genuinely start fires — lay them flat outside to dry stiff or drown them in a water-filled metal can, never a pile, never a trash bag (NPS — Spontaneous Combustion).

The glazing

Prime the rabbet. The step every first-timer skips and every glazier swears by. Raw wood is a sponge for linseed oil: seat fresh putty against it and the wood drinks the binder out, leaving starved putty that cracks in a year instead of sealing for decades. Brush the bare channel with oil-based primer or boiled linseed oil — your putty maker's instruction wins; modern compounds name their preferred primer on the label — and let it dry before any compound goes in. Two minutes of brushwork is the single biggest determinant of how long this repair lasts.

Back-bed the pane. Roll a thin rope of putty and press a continuous bead into the primed rabbet — this is the back-bedding, the cushion the glass sits into. Set the pane and press it home at the edges, over the rabbet, never in the center, until putty squeezes out evenly on the inside all the way around. Sight it from the room side: the bed should read as an unbroken contact line, no bright voids. That squeeze-out is the proof the pane is fully seated — glass set on bare wood is a drum head that rattles in wind and wicks condensation under itself; the bed is the anti-rattle, anti-creep seal. Your flexible putty knife does the rope-pressing here — the 1-1/2" width suits open rabbets, the 02005 anywhere narrow.

Drive the points. The fact most people have backwards: putty does not hold the glass in — the points do. Putty beds and seals; steel holds. Lay a push-style point (45760) flat on the glass, tight to the wood, hook the 02950's chisel end behind its tab, and slide it home flat along the plane of the glass into the sash wood, firm and level, until it's seated about halfway deep. The driving motion is a push-slide *parallel* to the pane — the glass itself backs the tool, which is why this is safe and why anything aimed *toward* the glass is not. Never strike points with a hammer toward the pane. Spacing: one point about 2" in from each corner, then every 8–10" along each edge. Set them low enough that the putty bevel will bury them completely.

Fill the rabbet. Roll a generous rope and press it into the channel over the points with fingers and thumb, packing as you go so there are no voids or folds. Overfill slightly — the bevel stroke carries away the excess. This is hand work on purpose: no tool can fix a gap that was never filled, and the tooling pass only shapes what your thumbs have already made solid.

Strike the bevel — the signature move. With the 02950's slotted V-blade: set the V over the putty line at one end of a run, angle it so the slot bridges from sash face to glass, and pull the full length of the rabbet in one smooth, continuous stroke. The slot extrudes a clean, uniform 45° bevel and shears the excess away in a ribbon — geometry doing what a glazier's freehand stroke does after years of practice. Peel the sheared excess off and re-run any run that stuttered; putty forgives re-strikes while it's fresh. First, the sight line: from inside the room, the putty must sit just below the edge of the wood it follows — putty visible over the muntin or sash profile from indoors is the amateur signature. Second, smoothness is weatherproofing: every ridge and stutter in the bevel is a shelf where water sits. The freehand alternative, for the record and for the day the V-blade is elsewhere: a clean flexible putty knife — lightly oiled for linseed putty — drawn along the run at 45° in one continuous pass, corners mitered where strokes meet. That is the skill the V-blade replaces, and the reason a first-timer's V-struck line looks like a glazier's.

Clean up while it's fresh. Trim the inside squeeze-out flush with the flexible knife's corner, lift stray smears off the glass, and dress the bevel's corner miters with the knife tip. If your compound's maker calls for a whiting dust to cut surface tack, now is its moment.

The divided-light variant — muntin windows

A divided-light sash is the same job multiplied by small — and small is its own discipline. The muntin rabbet is a channel a 1-1/2" blade bridges without ever reaching; this is the 02005's territory (the 3/4" flex; the 1-1/4" 02000 or 07010 where the profile allows), for bedding ropes, packing, and squeeze-out trimming inside tight lights. Work light by light and finish each phase across the whole sash before starting the next — all beds, then all panes, then all points, then all fills — so no light sits half-done while putty skins. The point-spacing rule collapses gracefully: on a small light, 2" off each corner may be the whole prescription, one or two points per side. The V-blade still rules the bevel, in shorter pulls: run each side of the light full-length, lift, turn, run the next, and dress the four miters with the knife corner. Check the sight line per light from inside — divided lights multiply the places a too-tall bevel can peek over a muntin, and nothing marks a rushed job faster than one fat line in a grid of correct ones.

After — the cure and the paint

Let it skin — on the compound's schedule, not yours. Fresh putty must firm and skin before paint will stay on it; paint over green putty wrinkles, traps solvent, and peels in a season. While it cures, keep weather off it if the sash is exterior-exposed and resist the urge to touch-test the bevel face.

Paint the line — and lap onto the glass. Prime the cured putty (oil-based unless your compound says otherwise), then top-coat, carrying the paint 1/16" past the putty onto the glass itself. That lap is not sloppiness — it is the water seal of the entire system, the film that closes the putty-to-pane joint against rain wicking behind the bevel. Once the paint dries hard, shave any over-lap off the glass with a razor scraper — after it dries, never before — per scrape-paint-and-overspray-off-glass.

Know what you just bought. A primed rabbet, a full bed, buried points, a smooth struck bevel, and a painted lap is the same material system these windows were built with — and maintained by nothing more than keeping paint on the line, a traditional putty job runs 50+ years (The Craftsman Blog — glazing putty). The pane you just set may outlast the person who set it.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

"The putty cracked and shrank within a year." Starved putty — the rabbet was bare, dry wood and it drank the binder out. There is no patch for this; remove and redo with the primer step honored. This failure is why step 5 exists.

"The V-blade tears and drags instead of shearing." The fill has voids the blade is falling into, or the compound is too cold and stiff. Pack the run again with your thumbs, warm the putty, and re-strike — fresh putty forgives.

"The bevel keeps slumping." Compound too warm or too oily. Knead it on clean cardboard to pull oil, cool it, re-strike. If the maker's compound is simply soft-bodied, strike a slightly lower bevel — a shallow sound line beats a tall sagging one.

"I can see putty from inside the room." Bevel struck above the sight line. Shave the fresh line down with the flexible knife at a steeper angle and re-strike — fixable for as long as the putty is workable, permanent the day it isn't.

"The pane cracked while I was setting points." Force aimed into the glass — a point driven at an angle, or the driver levering against the pane instead of sliding along it. The motion is flat, parallel, glass-backed; replacement is the cross-linked cutting guide, and the bed you press the new pane into is what you already know.

"The pane rattles." No back-bedding, or the pane never seated to squeeze-out. Points alone hold glass but nothing seals it; there is no fix short of re-bedding.

"Can I just use painter's caulk?" No — sealant from a gun is not glazing compound: it won't hold a struck bevel, most formulations can't be shaped or painted on this schedule, and removal later is misery.

The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)

The putty knife — the whole tool family one shelf over — is *named* for this job: glaziers' linseed-and-whiting putty, hand-set into wood sash for three centuries. What belongs to *this* page is the quiet invention that makes the job work: the glazier's point, the small steel fastener pushed home with the flat of a knife, which is what has actually held every puttied pane you have ever looked through (American Precision Museum — Glazier's Points) — the British trade calls them sprigs (Heritage Lane). Putty seals; steel holds; and the V-blade that strikes your bevel is the twentieth century's one real addition to a kit that otherwise reached its final form generations ago.
