Plan fence work board by board
Map posts, rails, pickets, caps, gates, hinges, latches, and ground contact. Choose a sequence that keeps a wet edge without trapping the operator behind wet surfaces.
Use the specialty roller where its shape reaches narrow edges, intersections, and rough profiles. Work material into the surface rather than skimming high points. Follow with the specified brush or field roller when back-brushing or face leveling is required.
Finish one manageable assembly at a time:
protected top and end grain as specified;
intersections and inside edges;
narrow faces and profiles;
final inspection for runs and misses.
Do not allow coating to bridge a gate clearance, fill hardware, or glue moving parts.
Work T111 grooves before broad faces
Inspect every vertical groove, panel joint, lower edge, penetration, and flashing detail. Determine which grooves are decorative and which joints or drainage paths require different treatment.

Control film on rough surfaces
Rough wood absorbs and hides material, but visual disappearance is not proof of correct film. Follow specified coverage and coat requirements. Do not press harder to “stretch” a load.
Reload before the cover begins dry-skipping. Conversely, use the grid when material pools at corners or runs down grooves. A specialty cover can carry substantial material as trade behavior, but no numeric capacity is claimed.
Inspect from several angles. Backlighting reveals holidays on picket edges and groove shoulders.
Build and keep a finish-control panel
Before production, coat representative scrap or a low-consequence section through the complete sequence: preparation, primer if required, groove/edge pass, field application, back-brushing if specified, and cure. Keep the panel available through the shift.
Compare production work to it for:
coverage in recesses;
roller and brush texture;
color and absorption variation;
runs below caps, rails, and grooves.
Do not use the panel to invent a spread rate or universal number of loads. It proves only the chosen substrate, coating, weather, and crew method.
Make a new witness when the substrate changes from new to weathered wood, the coating batch or color changes, a fresh cover is mounted, direct sun reaches the work, or the crew moves from fence components to siding panels. Rough surfaces that look similar can absorb very differently.
Move the bucket safely
Stop coating and park the roller in its approved position before moving. Do not carry an open bucket while holding a loaded roller or climbing.
Keep the bucket below the work and within the access plan. Never place it on a ladder step, roof edge, or unstable platform unless that equipment explicitly provides a rated method.
Wipe drips from the outside before carrying. Maintain a clear path and use team handling if the actual load requires it.
Manage cover changes
Change a cover when it sheds, mats, hardens, loses rotation, carries incompatible color/material, or cannot be cleaned to a trustworthy state. Stop before deterioration affects the finish.
Make the coating system safe. Remove and install covers only through verified instructions. Inspect hub and retention. Re-run a witness after a cover change because fresh wool can load and release differently.
Do not call 45850 an exact replacement until fitment is closed.
Control overspray, splatter, and drift from companion tools
If the field is sprayed while the Corner Ease handles grooves and edges, the entire operation inherits spray containment and airless safety. The corner roller does not protect neighboring property or place a worker safely beside a live fan.
Coordinate which applicator owns each wet zone. Keep the roller worker out of the spray path. Secure and pressure-relieve airless equipment before anyone reaches across the gun, tip, hose, or suspected leak. Decide cleanup from the coating and cover condition, not habit. Remove excess material through the approved method. Clean hub, tray/grid, bucket, and cover without sending solids or solvent into drains by assumption.
Do not soak components in an unverified chemical. Dry the equipment where it cannot contaminate a finish or create combustion risk.
Inspect after cleaning.
Record the exterior handoff
Identify construction defects not corrected by painting: soft boards, open joints, water entry, failed fasteners, or delamination. Do not let an attractive coat close a maintenance ticket for underlying damage.
At shift end, secure buckets and tools, maintain curing protection, and verify the oily-material route. A cover left on a hub in a closed vehicle is not an acceptable disposal or drying plan.
Inspect and release
Inspect under normal and raking light after the coating reaches its specified state. Check grooves, end grain, edges, panel faces, joints, hardware, ground line, protection, and neighboring property.
Classify misses, runs, lap marks, shedding, contamination, and construction defects. Repair only within the coating system.
Remove protection without spreading wet material. Restore gates, hardware, electrical service, and access through responsible personnel. Reopen only after cure and occupancy requirements are satisfied.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
Groove shoulders are coated but bottoms remain dry. The cover is bridging. Reduce section size, change angle, and use the specified brush where required.
Material curtains down vertical grooves. The cover or groove is overloaded. Grid off excess and correct the film while the coating permits.
Wool sheds into the finish. Stop, remove contamination under the coating method, and replace or qualify the cover.
The tray shifts in the bucket. Stop loading. Correct the exact seat or use the approved configuration; do not modify it.
45850 appears close but will not retain. Fitment is not verified. Do not force it; obtain authoritative confirmation.
The fence face dries before edges are integrated. Sections are too large for weather and crew speed. Reduce the work unit.
Coating fog or drips reach a neighbor’s property. Environmental protection failed. Stop, contain, and follow the incident plan.
