How to Mix a Bucket of Joint Compound

Job: knock down a factory pail of ready-mixed joint compound into one even, lump-free, workable body before the first knife touches a wall.
Time: one to two minutes of actual mixing per pail — plus the thirty seconds of reading the pail beforehand and the two minutes of washing the head after, both of which people skip and both of which cost them a coat later.
Difficulty: easy to do, easy to do wrong. There is exactly one skill here — *going slow* — and every instinct you have fights it. Master that and the rest is patience.
Everything else: the pail of compound itself, and — read this twice — the drill. This catalog sells you the mixing head; you bring the motor that turns it. That matters most for the 46565 and 09105, which will not chuck in an ordinary drill at all (below). Also: clean water added a splash at a time, a second bucket of rinse water, safety glasses (a head that breaks the surface throws mud), and the mud pan and knives for the coats that follow — those are their own guides.
Before you plug in the drill
Read the pail first. Ready-mix ships stiff on purpose — thick enough to survive the pallet — and it will not be the consistency you spread with. What's on top tells you what you're mixing:
A layer of clear water standing on the surface is normal and it is *not* to be poured off. That is the pail's own moisture, weeping up over storage; pour it down the drain and you'll spend the rest of the day wondering why the mud drags and cracks. It goes back in, folded through by the mixing.
A dried, leathery skin — the sign of a pail that was opened and left to breathe — is the opposite: it will not re-wet, and if you mix it in it becomes a batch full of rubbery lumps that drag lines under your knife for three coats. Lift the skin off in one sheet and throw it away before the head goes in. Water folds in; skin comes out. Confusing the two is the first mistake.
A pail that's factory-fresh and soft barely needs conditioning at all — just enough to bring it to one even body.
Match the head to the pail and the material. The whole logic of picking a mixer is one sentence: *small head and a little more speed for thin, loose material; big head and low speed for thick, full-bodied material.* A head has to physically visit the compound to move it, and stiff mud barely flows toward a small blade — so the stiffer and fuller the pail, the more blade you need and the slower you turn it.
Everyday, soft-to-medium ready-mix — the normal pail — is the 46555's (2-1/4" head) and 46560's (3-1/4" head) territory, both on an ordinary 3/8" drill.
Genuinely stiff mud — a cold pail, heavy box mud, a five filled to the brim — is where a smaller head stops rolling the pail and just carves a channel through the middle while the perimeter stays factory-hard. That pail wants the 46560's full 3-1/4" of blade, or — for daily heavy work — the 46565's 4" head or the 09105's twin 5" impellers.
Mixing in a plastic pail you intend to keep favors the 09114: its non-stick polypropylene blades won't shave curls off the bucket wall into your mud the way a steel rotor can.
The StirWhip (43440) has a hard ceiling here. Its flexible nylon fingers *flail* rather than shear, which is gentle and forgiving — but it only knocks down mud that's already soft. The moment the fingers start bending *around* the compound instead of moving it, the pail is past the whip; that's a job for one of the welded-steel heads, whose blades don't bend. Use the StirWhip for light knockdown and for folding in thinning water, not for breaking a stiff pail.
(Two heads you'll see on the shelf are *not* for this job: the narrow 1-3/4" 46540 exists to reach through a sealed pail's pour spout — it channels in full mud — and the 28" 09059 is the drum machine. Different jobs, different guides.)
Match the drill to the head — and know which heads you can't run. The hex shank on the shaft is the honest label for how much drill the tool expects:
3/8" hex shank → any 3/8"-chuck drill you own drives it: the 46555, the 46560, the 09114, and the StirWhip.
1/2" hex shank → a 1/2" low-rpm drill, the kind the trades call a mud mixer or spade-handle drill: the 46565 and the 09105. A 1/2" hex does not seat in a 3/8" chuck — this is a non-fit, not a tight fit, and no adapter is worth the torque these heads make. If there's no 1/2" low-speed drill on the truck, the 46560 mixes the same pail a minute slower on the drill you already have. That's the honest read on the big heads: each is *half* of a two-tool purchase.
Whatever the head, the drill needs a variable-speed trigger with a genuinely slow bottom end (low gear if it's a two-speed), because everything below depends on running slow. Knocking it down
Head to the pail floor before you touch the trigger. The settled, factory-stiff material lives at the bottom and around the wall-floor ring. Sink the blades all the way down first, *then* pull the trigger — never spin up a head hanging in the middle of the pail, and never lower a spinning head in. On the long-shafted 46565 and 09105 the 23-1/2"–24" shaft is there precisely so the head can sit on the floor while the drill stays up above a brimming rim, dry and out of the splash.
Start slow — and stay slow. This is the whole job. Every failure a mixer produces is a speed artifact, and the temptation to open the trigger and "get it done" is exactly the trap. Low rpm matters three ways, and the first one is the reason this guide exists:
Air is the enemy of the finish coat. A fast head near the surface whips air into the compound the way a whisk whips cream. Those bubbles don't pop — they survive in the pail, ride the knife onto the wall, and surface as pinholes and pits under the finish coat, often two coats later. It is a delayed fuse: a finisher who whips mud like cake batter buys themselves an extra skim coat days afterward and never connects it back to the mixer. Slow blades don't beat air in.
Speed slings and vortexes. A fast head opens a spinning crater that sucks air down the shaft, and a fast head breaking the surface throws mud in a ring across the room. The Mudslinger® name is the trade's own joke about exactly this — it's a warning label, not a boast.
Speed overloads the drill and your wrist (see step 7).
So: ease the trigger in from zero with the head already on the floor, and find the lowest speed that actually turns the material. You are conditioning mud, not blending a smoothie.
Roll the whole pail — sides and bottom, not just the middle. A mixer does two things at once: it shears material where the blades are, and it pumps a current that carries the bottom up and the top down. Your job is to serve that circulation loop so it reaches every corner:
Orbit the perimeter. Walk the head slowly around the wall-floor ring — that's where the factory-stiff material and any settlement hide, and a head parked in the center leaves the whole outer ring exactly as it was packed. With a full-size head (the 3-1/4" 46560, the 4" 46565) this is what "rolls the pail": enough blade that the whole mass turns over. With the smaller 2-1/4" 46555, the orbit matters *more*, not less — it's the only way the outer ring gets mixed at all.
Then work up and down. Once the floor is turning, run the head slowly up through the column and back down, several passes, so top and bottom trade places. Sides, bottom, up, down — until there is no difference anywhere in the pail.
Read the drill and know when it's done. The motor tells you where you are. A surging, fluctuating load means the head is still breaking through stiff or settled material — keep going. A steady, level load with the head lifting smooth, cream-colored, lump-free mud that carries no streaks means the pail is uniform and you're finished. A lugging drill that's trying to twist out of your hands is a stall warning — *brace and slow down, never power through it* (step, below). Done is an even body the consistency of thick peanut butter, a floor that sweeps clean under the blades, and no dry or dense spot anywhere. One to two minutes of patient low-rpm work gets most pails there.
Thin only if the coat calls for it — and only forward. Straight from the pail, knocked-down all-purpose compound is close to right for bedding tape. If a coat wants it looser, thin it mud-first and in small steps: add a little water *to* the mixed compound, blend it fully at low speed, read the consistency off the blade, then repeat if needed. Never flood water in chasing a number. The law that saves you: you can always add water, you can never take it back out. An over-thinned taping batch shrinks and cracks right in the joint, and no amount of remixing brings its body back. How loose each coat wants to be — near-full body for tape, looser for the fill, loosest for the skim — is its own job: see "Thin joint compound by coat."
Finishing the batch
Give it a rest, then a few slow turns. After the last of the water is in, run the head slowly for a few final revolutions and then let the pail sit a minute. Both do the same quiet work: they let whatever air did get folded in rise out before the mud ever meets a knife. If a batch got away from you and whipped, let it stand before you skim from it — resting is the cheapest fix for pinholes there is, and it costs you nothing but a coffee.
Wash the head now — not at lunch, not tonight. A crusted blade root is not a cosmetic problem: dried compound seeds hard lumps into every future pail the head touches, and those lumps become drag-lines under your knife. Rinse the head under water or in your rinse bucket while the mud is still wet, spin it briefly at low speed to sling the water off (down, into the bucket), pick any compound out of the blade roots, and dry the steel shaft — the powder-coat and plating are corrosion armor and they work best dry. The "non-stick, easy-wash" claim on these heads describes a tool washed *on time*; nothing survives being ignored until morning. What goes wrong (and the fix)
"My finish coat pitted with pinholes two days after I mixed." The signature failure, and it's almost always air whipped in at the mixer — run too fast, or with the head breaking the surface. Mud remembers. Next batch: slower, head submerged, and a rest before skimming. This batch, already on the wall: there's no fix but another skim once it's dry.
"There are lumps dragging lines under my knife." Three causes. A dried skin mixed in instead of lifted off (step 1) — it won't dissolve, so any lump you can't crush is skin, and the batch is compromised. A crusted mixer head seeding crumbs (step 10). Or an under-mixed perimeter — the outer ring never got rolled (step 6). For skin and crust, strain or start over; for the perimeter, mix again and work the wall-floor ring.
"The mud sags off the knife and cracks in the joint." Over-thinned. You can't un-water it.
"The drill kicked hard enough to twist my wrist." Torque reaction — the head lugged in stiff mud and the drill body rotated instead of the blades. This is a real hazard, not a nuisance, on the big heads: a 4" impeller stalling in cold box mud can wrench a wrist or knock you off a ladder. It's exactly why the 46565 and 09105 specify low-rpm 1/2" drills, which carry side handles and the right gearing. Fit the side handle, plant your stance, ease the trigger in with the head submerged, and never try to muscle through a stall — brace and slow, or the material wants a bigger machine.
"The StirWhip just spins and the mud sits there." You've hit the whip's ceiling: its nylon fingers are flexing *around* stiff compound instead of moving it. No speed setting fixes a flexible finger. That pail belongs to a welded-steel head — the 46555 or, if it's genuinely heavy, the 46560.

Joint compound made this tool. That single design decision put a drill-driven mixing head in every taping crew's kit, which is why the middle of this catalog's mixer line wears a drywall nickname, Mudslinger®, and why the name doubles as the warning every apprentice earns once: run the head at the surface and it does exactly what it says.
