Job: Survey and repair the ordinary Class 1 and Class 2 wall damage in a vacant rental unit, while routing water, movement, hazard, and board-replacement work to the right scope

Make-ready work is not a faster version of one repair. It is a routing problem repeated across a unit. Picture holes want a pocket tube. A flat doorknob hole wants a rigid bridge. A long, curved, uneven, or overhead Class 2 wound wants conformable fabric. Soft board, water, loose plaster, movement, and broad holes want a different trade scope.

The fastest crew is the one that makes those decisions during the first walk and does not carry the wrong material through three rooms.

Establish the release standard

Before touching a wall, define what “ready” means for this unit. Record rooms included, surfaces excluded, repaint boundaries, texture and sheen expectations, damage that belongs to another scope, and who accepts hidden or larger defects.

Do not infer lease policy, chargeback, wear-and-tear rules, or owner standards from this guide. The wall-repair acceptance standard should be physical and observable: sound substrate, closed damage, continuous plane, matched texture, sealed porosity, uniform finish, and clean room.

Photograph the starting condition where authorized. Use a room-by-room identifier so later repair notes can be reconciled without relying on memory.

Make a safety and services walk first

Check for active leaks, damp or soft wallboard, visible microbial growth, electrical damage, broken glass, loose overhead material, pest contamination, and unsafe access. Isolate or route those conditions before cosmetic work.

In pre-1978 buildings, paint and installed patching/texture materials may trigger lead and asbestos controls when disturbed. EPA’s RRP program expressly includes property managers and rental housing, and EPA’s asbestos actions register records the CPSC’s 1977 wall-patching-compound ban; old installed material can predate it. Establish testing, containment, worker/occupant protection, cleaning, and disposal before scraping or sanding.

Confirm utilities, ventilation, temperature, humidity, and access are appropriate for the selected compounds and coatings. A vacant unit is not automatically a controlled work environment.

Divide the unit into a fixed walk path

Start at the entry and move consistently—clockwise by room, top to bottom on each wall, then ceilings, closets, and utility spaces. Include views behind doors and at hardware locations.

Use a non-damaging approved marking or digital log. Give every item:

room and wall;

substrate and shape;

likely repair route;

cause or uncertainty;

Consistency prevents double counting and missed rooms. It also lets different operations—fill, patch, skim, sand, prime—follow the same sequence.

Classify the wound before selecting a product

Use three practical classes.

Class 1: fill only. Nail holes, pinholes, small screw holes, shallow dings, and similar wounds with material behind them. These belong to 09914.

Class 2: bridge and finish. A localized hole or missing face with sound wall around it but no dependable base for filler. Flat wall wounds may suit 09008; curved, uneven, overhead, long, or repeated damage may suit 09911.

None of the three registered products replaces board, framing, lath, water management, or building assessment.

Cracks need separate diagnosis. Do not smear 09914 over a moving line or hide one under a square patch.

Assign 09914 to the Class 1 route

Model 09914 is a 3-ounce tube of joint compound with a built-in applicator/spreader. Hyde states that it fills over 300 nail holes, has a patented resealable tube with a three-year shelf life even after opening, and reduces flashing compared with traditional spackle.

That combination makes it a pocket tool for the first repair pass. It is not a broad skim product and not a bridge.

Flag nail pops for refastening before cosmetic fill. Remove anchors only through an approved method and reclassify any extraction that tears out a void.

Assign 09008 to flat Class 2 holes

Model 09008 is an 8 × 8-inch self-adhesive patch supplied as a 25-pack. Its fiberglass mesh and perforated aluminum plate cover without additional backing and are claimed for drywall, plaster, wood, and other materials.

Use it where a localized hole has sound, dry, reasonably flat wall around the entire opening. The rigid plate supplies the bridge and the mesh supplies a compound key.

Do not assign it to a ceiling merely by habit; the product is named as a wall patch. Do not assign it to a curved or rolling surface where the plate will bridge the surface profile. No maximum hole size or plate thickness is claimed. Maintain generous sound adhesive margin and route doubtful holes upward in class.

The 25-pack is an operational format, not a claim that every unit needs the whole package. Keep unused patches clean, flat, dry, identified, and separate from job debris.

Assign 09911 to conformable or continuous Class 2 work

Model 09911 is a 5-inch × 9-foot contractor roll, also correctly described as five inches by three yards. Hyde supports cutting the fabric with scissors, dipping it in water, and spreading it over damage. It hardens permanently within minutes, is ready for a finish coat within 20–30 minutes, and serves flat, curved, or uneven surfaces. Exact-model evidence also supports wall and ceiling repair and usually one coat of compound to cover.

Use the roll where a continuous strip, curve, irregular profile, overhead location, or sequence of related repairs makes conformable fabric the honest choice. Cut only the planned piece while dry.

The chemistry, water temperature, soak time, exterior exposure, and wet-area rating are not claimed. Follow the complete instructions and keep the job inside the verified substrate/environment.

Build the cart by route, not by room

Stage three clearly separated work kits:

Class 1 pocket route: 09914, cleaning cloth, approved small scraper/abrasive, light, and repair log;

flat Class 2 route: 09008, cleaning/prep supplies, finishing compound, knives, and patch waste;

conformable Class 2 route: dry 09911 roll, scissors, clean activation water, approved bedding tools, and a splash-protected cutting area.

Keep clean stock away from sanding dust and wet compound. Do not let the water-activated roll share a damp bin. Keep product identity with partial stock.

Board-replacement and hazardous-material work belong on separate controlled carts or work orders so the ordinary repair route does not drift into unauthorized demolition.

Complete the Class 1 pass

Walk the fixed route with 09914. Flatten raised paint craters, press compound into each wound, and wipe with the built-in spreader. Leave the fill flush-to-slightly-proud rather than a mound.

Deep small holes may shrink and need a second thin fill after full dry. No product dry time is claimed, so use actual condition and the material instructions rather than a universal schedule.

Reseal the tube between rooms, keep the nozzle clean, and update every logged item. A skipped status mark is how one white nail hole survives a full repaint.

Prepare every Class 2 wound before placing bridges

Remove only loose, proud material and stabilize torn face paper under the selected finish system. Confirm the perimeter is sound, clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, or chalk.

For 09008, the adhesive must land on sound wall on all sides. Dry-position mentally or with an approved layout method before exposing adhesive.

For 09911, measure the job cut as a local record, provide sound margin beyond ends and sides, and cut dry with scissors.

Stop when prep reveals water, broad loose material, services, corrosion, or a larger void. Reclassify rather than stack patches.

Place the flat-wall 09008 patches

Peel the liner and center the patch so sound adhesive margin surrounds the opening. Press from the center outward across the full field. Do not bridge dust, torn proud paper, or a wall crown that prevents contact.

Check that the plate does not pump and no corner lifts. The surface-mounted assembly will sit proud by an unclaimed thickness; plan a broad feather rather than trying to sand the patch flush.

Log one installed patch per wound. If several 8-inch squares would need to overlap, the job likely belongs to a larger repair method.

Cut, activate, and place 09911

Keep the roll dry while laying out all cuts. Label pieces by room if necessary. Prepare clean water at the work point, then activate one piece at a time according to instructions.

Dip and spread the fabric over the prepared damage. Bed from the center outward, removing air and maintaining full contact without starving, stretching, or tearing it. On curves or ceilings, support the piece through the method while preserving its profile.

Leave it undisturbed as it hardens. The verified 20–30-minute finish-coat window supports production sequencing: by the time later rooms are placed, earlier rooms may approach the next gate. Confirm actual readiness rather than racing the clock.

Batch the first finish coats

Use compatible finishing compound and clean knives. For 09008, force compound into the mesh and cover the plate while beginning a broad shallow transition. Do not catch an adhesive edge with the knife.

For 09911, cover the set fabric and extend beyond its perimeter. The exact product evidence says one coat usually covers; preserve “usually” and let actual plane, texture, and light decide.

Keep the center only as heavy as needed. A turnover schedule is not improved by thick compound that dries slowly and cracks. Mark each item’s coat and time/status.

Scrape, recoat, and feather by room sequence

After the material reaches its required state, scrape ridges with a clean knife. Apply wider corrective coats wherever the bridge still reads.

The 09008 surface-mount geometry normally demands the broadest transition. The 09911 fabric may follow uneven surfaces but its edges and ends can still print. Class 1 fills should need minimal refinement if wiped correctly.

Use raking light across two directions. Do not wait until finish paint to discover a square, strip, or field of dimples.

Sand under a controlled route

Close or protect adjacent rooms as required. Sand only fully ready compound using extraction and PPE appropriate to the material. Use the compound safety data and OSHA’s drywall/joint-compound silica interpretation to set the exposure-control route rather than assuming all sanding has the same risk. Work the same fixed unit path and update status as each room clears.

Do not abrade into mesh, aluminum, or fabric. Do not dry sweep. Clean horizontal surfaces, trim, receptacle covers, floors, and air pathways before primer.

If old material is unexpectedly exposed, stop and return to the hazard plan.

Match texture

Record each room’s texture before repair. Reproduce tool, pattern, direction, scale, and knockdown timing through the specified material and a witness.

Blend beyond a neat patch outline. On old walls, a modest controlled irregularity may match better than a perfectly smooth island.

Texture products and techniques are job materials outside the three registered tool claims. Follow their instructions and cure/dry gates.

Prime every porous repair

Prime the complete feathered fields and 09914 fills under the coating system. Joint compound differs in porosity from painted wall, and unprimed repairs can flash in sheen.

Inspect after primer. It can reveal pinholes, scratches, mesh pattern, and feather edges that raw compound concealed. Correct, re-prime the correction, and only then release for paint.

Paint to the selected boundary

Use confirmed coating identity and application method. Touch-up only where the project standard and real match support it. Aged coating, light angle, and sheen can make stored paint differ visibly.

Where needed, paint corner-to-corner or to another natural architectural break. Maintain consistent roller or brush texture. Record rooms requiring full-field repaint instead of hiding that scope inside “patch touch-up.”

Run the punch walk in judging light

Return to the same fixed path after finish dry. Use normal room lighting plus raking light. View behind doors, at corridor approaches, and from seated height where applicable.

all logged wounds are closed;

no square, strip, edge, dimple, or sanding scratch prints;

texture and sheen are continuous;

no active crack, moisture stain, loose material, or fastener movement remains;

devices, trim, floors, and hardware are clean;

routed Class 3 or specialist work is visibly open, not falsely marked complete.

Photograph or sign off each room under the authorized process.

Reconcile stock and waste

Reseal and clean 09914 according to its instructions. Keep unused 09008 patches flat and identified. Keep the remaining 09911 roll dry, protected, and labeled.

Dispose of compound, coating, abrasive dust, liners, and water through the applicable site and product rules. Do not discharge solids to drains or mix regulated old-wall debris with ordinary waste.

Reconcile installed items to the repair log. Product counts are operational records, not a substitute for inspection.

Close exceptions without disguising them

List every item not accepted and its route: leak correction, board replacement, loose plaster stabilization, crack diagnosis, electrical repair, broad coating, or owner decision. Give an observable reason.

A make-ready run is complete when the accepted wall scope passes and every excluded condition has a named owner or status. Painting over an open exception does not make the queue smaller; it removes the evidence needed to finish it.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

Every wound gets 09914 because it is fastest. Reclassify. Filler cannot span an open Class 2 void.

Every Class 2 wound gets 09008. Check shape and location; curved, uneven, overhead, or strip work may belong to 09911.

Several 09008 patches overlap across crushed board. Stop and route the Class 3 repair.

09911 stock hardens in the cart. Water reached uncut roll stock. Protect it dry and activate one cut piece at a time.

A patch square shows after paint. The feather is too narrow or primer/texture failed.

Nail-hole fills dimple. Deep fills shrank. Apply a second thin 09914 pass after full dry.

The unit is dusty after sanding. Extraction and cleaning failed. Reclean under the exposure plan before coating or occupancy.

A water stain reappears. The cause was not closed. Stop cosmetic release and repair the moisture source.

A room is marked ready while routed defects remain. Reconcile the exception log and assign explicit status.

The history footnote

Make-ready is a maintenance production pattern rather than a named invention: inspect, classify, batch like work, and release the finished space. Modern pocket compound, metal-backed patches, and water-activated roll fabric shorten different rungs of that workflow.
