How to Run Long Production Trim Cuts
This guide is a process-control workflow for sheet stock that the user has already identified and qualified. It does not claim that an untested material is compatible, set a cut tolerance, certify a production rate, or approve a finished part.

Job: produce repeated long straight trims from a controlled reference line, keeping the work supported and stationary, the operator outside the cut path, and every accepted piece traceable to the applicable order, material lot, setup, and inspection record.
Time: determined by the qualified local process.
Difficulty: simple hand motion, demanding production discipline. The quality risk lives in an unqualified material, a moving guide, a bad reference edge, a hidden layer beneath the work, repeated restarts, an edge that is no longer serviceable, or a line that keeps running after its process has changed.
Accepted evidence identifies an 8" × 1" × .072" knife with a hardened high-carbon steel blade, a smooth hardwood handle, and a blade riveted and locked by a nickel-plated ferrule.
Everything else: the current work order, drawing, approved sample, or other controlled cut specification · positively identified sheet stock and lot record · stable production bench · sacrificial support selected for the material and process · rigid guide or straightedge · a qualified method of keeping the guide and stock stationary · measuring and marking equipment controlled by the site's quality system · first-piece and sampling records · designated containers for accepted pieces, rework, rejects, and offcuts · material-specific safety information and cleanup supplies · secure fixed-blade storage. None of these inputs is implied to be a Hyde product.
A production line needs three kinds of evidence:
Hyde product evidence identifies the 60115; it does not approve stock.
Process qualification evidence covers the named material, condition, support, guide, method, and inspection. A trial applies only to that envelope and is not a Hyde claim.
Production control evidence shows the job stayed inside the envelope: correct order and lot, released setup, first-piece approval, sampling, changes, and stop response.
Before release: qualify the exact job
Freeze what “good” means
Start from the controlled order, drawing, or approved master. Identify the cut line, datum, retained side, waste side, orientation, inspection method, and nonconformance disposition.
Resolve ambiguity before stock reaches the station. “Trim straight” or “clean edge” needs a repeatable inspection decision.
Identify the material and every condition that may change the cut
Record the material's controlled identity, lot, and every condition the process owner considers relevant. This is an exact qualification envelope, not a compatibility catalog.
Do not infer compatibility from appearance, a prior job, or the fact that the blade enters the material. Stop for unidentified stock, an unassessed dust or vapor, an unresolved chemical hazard, a concealed inclusion, or behavior unlike the qualified sample. Obtain current supplier information and technical classification before continuing.
Each material, layer count, and support arrangement therefore requires its own documented qualification or a controlled equivalence decision made by the process owner.
Run a witnessed qualification coupon
Use stock from the exact identified condition. Record the knife, stock and lot, support, guide, hold-down, marking, stroke sequence, operator, inspection, and result. If more than one stroke is used, record restart indexing and junction evaluation.
Inspect line location, required profile, edge condition, junctions, retained surfaces, protected lower layers, and contamination against the controlled criteria, using the approved measurement method.
If it fails, control the investigation or select a different process; do not substitute force for qualification.
Write the stop rules before the run
The traveler or station instruction should name the conditions that stop production. Include, as applicable:
loss of order, material, lot, or revision identity;
stock or support different from the released setup;
guide or work movement;
first-piece or sample failure;
increased cutting force, blade drag, chatter, visible damage, looseness, or corrosion affecting the operation;
a new tear, chip, pull, junction step, underside mark, contamination, or other specified defect;
a missed inspection, mixed containers, uncertain count, or traceability break;
an interruption or change that the control plan defines as requiring a new first piece;
any unassessed hazard, spill, machine movement, or person entering the cut zone.
Define who may restart and what evidence is required. A stop button or red tag is not a complete response unless the held material is identified and the last known-good point is preserved.
Build the station around a controlled line
Separate the hand-cut station from machine hazards
This guide covers sheet stock stopped on a bench. It does not authorize trimming from a moving web, powered roll, conveyor, winding machine, nip, or any material still carrying stored tension. If the stock is part of powered equipment, use the machine-specific guarding and energy-control procedure. OSHA's control-of-hazardous-energy standard applies to covered servicing and maintenance where unexpected energization, startup, or released energy could injure a worker; its scope and any applicable machine-guarding rule must be resolved by the employer. A hand knife is not an alternative guard or energy-isolation device.
Provide a clearly bounded cutting zone. Keep aisles, access, and the floor free of offcuts, spills, and sharp objects in line with OSHA 1910.22. Arrange incoming stock, accepted pieces, rejects, and waste so they cannot cross through the operator's blade path or be mistaken for one another.
Support the entire cut and protect what is beneath it
Place the work on the qualified sacrificial surface. Support both the retained piece and the offcut through the end of the stroke so neither can sag, rotate, or peel away. Confirm that the intended path contains no fastener, fixture, embedded object, previous offcut, hand, cable, or good layer that the blade could reach.
The square point is blunt rather than piercing, but it does not guarantee that underlying stock will remain unmarked. Protecting the bench and lower layers is a setup and qualification responsibility.
Align the straightedge to the controlled marks or datum. Use the locally qualified hold-down method to prevent movement without distorting the stock. The holding hand must remain behind the guide and outside both the intended path and the credible slip path.
Qualify their security, material effect, cleanliness, and inspection access. Never put fingers across the line.
Inspect the 60115 at release
Confirm identity and inspect the entire tool. Remove it for a loose connection, damaged handle or blade, consequential corrosion or contamination, or any condition outside the site's serviceability rule.
A sharp edge generally requires less force than a dull one, and CCOHS advises keeping cutting tools sharp and taking damaged tools out of use. Do not reshape the edge by guess. Route a questionable knife through the site's authorized maintenance or Hyde service channel.
PPE follows the employer's documented hazard assessment, not a generic knife costume. OSHA 1910.132 requires workplace hazard assessment, suitable PPE selection, communication, fit, and training; OSHA 1910.138 requires hand protection to be selected for the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards where hands face cut or other listed hazards. Material dust, chemicals, temperature, and machinery may add controls. PPE does not authorize a hand to enter the cut path.
Run the repeatable cutting sequence
Release the order and clear the line
At the start of a run or changeover:
remove the previous order's stock, labels, marks, samples, records, and waste;
verify the current order, revision, material, lot, quantity, and container labels;
verify that the released qualification or controlled instruction covers this exact setup;
inspect the knife, guide, support, measuring equipment, lighting, and waste path;
confirm that required safety controls and inspection resources are present; and
record who released the setup and when.
If any identity is uncertain, hold the work. Production urgency does not resolve genealogy.
Orient, reference, and mark one piece
Place the stock in the qualified orientation. Establish the named datum against the fixture or measure from it using the approved method. Mark the retained and waste sides unmistakably. If the material has two visually similar faces or a direction important to the order, carry that identity on the traveler and piece; do not rely on memory after the offcut separates.
Set the guide to the line and verify it at more than one point when the controlled method requires that check. Confirm the cut will exit into clear sacrificial support. Before touching the blade to stock, point out the guide hand, knife hand, cut direction, and finish zone. Any person assisting with long stock must have a defined safe position and must not move or tension the stock during a stroke.
Make the qualified draw
Start from an exposed stock edge. Register the blade to the guide using the qualified setup and make a smooth draw in the approved direction, away from the body and all hands. Use only the force established during qualification. Do not stab the square point into the middle, chop downward, twist the blade, pry with it, or reach across the active path.
Production planning seeks fewer starts and fewer junction opportunities. Verify that process hypothesis; it is not a promised cycle time or finish. Use only the working edge the qualified stroke safely controls, then lift clear after exit.
If another stroke is required, stop and inspect the current kerf. Reposition hands and support, align the next start by the qualified restart method, and continue in the approved direction. Do not reverse into rapid sawing or freehand a correction beside the guide.
At the end, place the knife in its designated secure rest before moving either piece. Do not hide it under stock, leave its edge toward an aisle, hand it blade-first, or try to catch it if dropped. CCOHS's sharp-blade guidance recommends storing sharp tools visibly and securely and placing a knife down for another worker to pick up rather than passing or throwing it.
Inspect the first piece before repetition
Keep the first piece and its offcut together until identification and inspection are complete. Inspect every characteristic named by the control plan. Typical decision categories include:
correct order, revision, material, lot, orientation, and retained side;
cut location and finished dimension by the specified method;
edge follows the required line or approved master;
no unacceptable step, notch, hook, waviness, tear, pull, delamination, or finish damage;
no unintended score or cut on protected underlying material;
no residue, debris, or cross-contamination;
labels and traceability remain with the correct piece.
These are not tolerances. Run only after recorded first-piece acceptance.
Repeat without allowing drift to become normal
Follow the same orient–reference–mark–hold–draw–inspect–segregate sequence for every part. Keep accepted work, pending inspection, rework, rejects, and waste physically distinct. Reconcile counts at the interval the local system requires.
Use the documented sampling plan. Sampling frequency and sample size must reflect the job's consequence, observed capability, customer requirement, and quality system.
In addition to scheduled samples, trigger an inspection after any event the control plan names: guide movement, edge service or tool replacement, material-lot change, support replacement, interruption, operator change, unusual force, defect, dropped tool, or uncertain setup. If a sample fails, stop, identify all material back to the last accepted check, segregate it, and follow the site's nonconformance procedure. Never measure one new good piece and silently release the held interval.
Changeover and end-of-run control
Close the run before opening the next
Reconcile input, accepted output, rejects, rework, samples, and offcuts. Record the final accepted point. Clear every prior label, mark, template, sample, and piece, then clean the station by the approved method.
A change in order, revision, stock identity or lot, layer count, support, hold-down, guide, knife, operator qualification, or inspection method may require a new first piece or requalification. The control plan decides which.
Clean and store the knife without creating a new hazard
Follow the stock supplier's safety information for residue and dust. Isolate the knife before cleaning; keep the edge visible and pointed away from the body. Do not soak the handle, scrape the knife against hard fixtures, or use an unknown solvent merely because it removes residue.
Remove contamination, dry the tool thoroughly, inspect again, and record any maintenance or quarantine required by the site. High-carbon steel is a verified product fact; a clean, dry storage condition is prudent process care, not an edge-life promise.
Store the 60115 in a dedicated rack, slot, or rigid container that prevents unintended edge contact and preserves identity. A cardboard wrap or loose drawer is not a controlled production storage system.
What goes wrong — diagnose, contain, then correct
The line wanders. Stop. Check guide registration and movement, stock support, reference marks, blade condition, and whether the operator is steering instead of following the released method. Hold pieces since the last accepted check.
A step appears where strokes meet. The restart was not indexed to the same path or the guide/stock moved. Do not shave the step freehand unless an approved rework instruction permits it. Correct the restart control and requalify if necessary.
The stock bunches, stretches, or tears. The material or condition may be outside the qualified envelope; the support or hold-down may be wrong; the edge may be unserviceable; or force has replaced slicing travel. Stop rather than pressing harder.
The cut is incomplete. Keep the piece supported and the knife clear while deciding whether the approved method permits another aligned pass. Do not tear the offcut away or lever the blade sideways.
The blade marks the layer beneath. The sacrificial support, stack definition, or depth control failed. Hold the affected work and verify every protected layer. The square point is not a no-score guarantee.
Force rises during the run. Treat increased force as a process-change signal. Inspect the edge, contamination, material lot, support, and technique. Do not normalize it or wait for a laceration or bad sample.
The guide shifts. Stop immediately. Any piece cut after the last verified guide position is suspect. Correct the hold-down and repeat first-piece approval as the control plan requires.
The blade, handle, or ferrule is damaged or loose. Remove the knife from service and identify the held interval. Do not field-straighten, hammer, pry, or glue it back into production.
A sample fails. Contain back to the last accepted sample, notify the designated quality owner, investigate the assignable cause, and use the formal disposition.
Two lots or orders are mixed. Stop and quarantine the entire uncertain set. Appearance does not restore traceability.
An operator is interrupted mid-stroke. Stop the cut safely, place the knife in its rest, then handle the interruption. Do not continue while looking away or talking across the station.
The job moves onto powered equipment. This guide ends. Apply the machine-specific guarding, energy-control, and authorized operating procedure.
Product fit and honest limits
The production method uses that relationship without turning it into a performance warranty.
It does not assert material compatibility, thickness, ply count, distance, quantity, tolerance, comfort, edge life, or an approval beyond recorded Hyde facts. Those remain qualification, quality, safety, maintenance, and supervisory decisions.

Can the operator cut against a roll, stack, or finished surface underneath?
Only if that exact arrangement has been qualified and protects every layer that must remain intact.
How should the edge be sharpened?
Follow Hyde service guidance when obtained or the site's authorized maintenance process without inventing bevels, angles, or removal limits.
Use the site's documented serviceability rule and authorized decision.
Is there a Hyde sheath for 60115?
None is verified in the source set.
History footnote — the production advance was control, not speed alone
Long straight trimming became a production operation when shops stopped treating every cut as an isolated act and began controlling references, guides, first pieces, repeatability, and disposition. The long square-point knife belongs to that bench tradition: a maintained edge guided through stationary stock, with the blunt end avoiding the behavior of a piercing point. This guide claims neither. The useful inheritance is the discipline: qualify the material, control the line, inspect the result, and stop when the process changes.
