This guide preserves both graph edges while assigning the documented correction work only to the 45360.
Job: reduce a localized, sound, cured high left by filler, patching material, joint compound, or another coating-compatible repair material; preserve the intended plane or profile; remove the opening abrasive’s scratch under the admitted system; and leave a clean, accepted surface for finer finishing, primer, sealer, or coating.
Difficulty: the hand work is simple; the decision is not. A proud repair can be subtracted. A hollow needs material. A loose repair needs removal and diagnosis. An unknown old layer may need testing or regulated control before anyone is allowed to abrade it.
Time: the selected filler, compound, abrasive, substrate, and coating system own cure, sanding readiness, recoat, handling, and return-to-service time. This guide supplies no clock.
45360 — Foam Sanding Block, four sanding sides, medium/coarse: the documented lead. Hyde supports four medium/coarse sanding sides, heavy-duty aluminum-oxide abrasive, flat or contour work, wet or dry use, and rinsing to clean. Identify the working surface on the physical block under the approved test method; never infer a number or face map.
45320 — Foam Sanding Block, store-listed identity: graph member under an evidence hold. The local store identity is exact, but no official catalog row, current Hyde product page, accepted retailer evidence, or accepted product claim establishes its working properties. Do not transfer 45360 claims to it.
Identify the material, substrate, and finish obligation
Do not begin with “a lump that needs sanding.” Record what the high is made of, what it is bonded to, what lies beside and beneath it, and what finish must receive the corrected surface.
Gypsum board, plaster, and wall-repair compounds
Distinguish joint compound, setting compound, lightweight or general-purpose compound, spackle, plaster patch, exposed gypsum-board face paper, and an unknown prior repair. These names do not share one cure signal, hardness, permitted abrasive, water response, or coating schedule. The exact product record decides when abrasion is allowed and whether dry or wet work is permitted.
Read the assembly too. Face paper, gypsum core, tape, corner bead, plaster keys, and prior coating are different receiving surfaces; leveling cured compound can become delamination when the block reaches a weak layer.
Wood, veneer, and engineered wood
Separate solid wood from veneer, plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, finger-jointed stock, factory skins, and unknown composite. Identify the repair as a water-based wood filler, pore filler, catalyzed repair, epoxy-family repair, or another exact material only when its record proves that identity. Veneer and thin factory surfaces have limited sacrificial thickness; no coarse-block permission in this guide overrides that boundary.
Paint-grade, stain-grade, clear-finished, factory-coated, and historic surfaces accept different preparation. “Sandable” does not establish stain match, finish compatibility, or permission to abrade surrounding wood.
Metal, fiberglass, plastic, masonry, and mixed substrates
Two-part fillers and compounds appear on metal, fiberglass, plastic, masonry, concrete, and mixed assemblies. Generic chemistry words establish neither abrasive compatibility nor coating stack. Bind the exact repair product to the actual substrate and finish.
Cementitious fillers, masonry patches, concrete repairs, and some joint compounds may create respirable crystalline-silica exposure when abraded. A hand block is not an exemption, and this guide does not select a control or PPE configuration.
Existing paint, coating, contamination, and unknown layers
Record every layer the block could cross and what may remain. If contamination, moisture, corrosion, biological growth, or an unknown film is suspected, stop until the responsible system supplies the diagnosis and preparation.
The target is the repair high, not automatically the surrounding coating. Crossing onto adjacent material changes both the exposure and the finish problem.
Separate proud material from material that is not sound enough to sand
Use ordinary and raking views, the approved non-destructive reference, and the project’s acceptance language to classify the condition.
Sound and proud: the repair is bonded, stable, at its named sanding-readiness state, and locally above the intended plane or profile. This is the only condition admitted to the leveling loop.
Sound and already in plane: the defect is gone and only an authorized finishing scratch remains. Do not open with the coarse presentation merely because the block has one.
Low, hollow, pinholed, or shrunken: abrasion cannot add material. Return to the repair system for an authorized fill.
Loose, cracked, drummy, edge-lifted, powdering, or separating: the repair is unsound.
Soft, smearing, rolling, or edge-pulling: stop. The material may not have reached its named sanding gate, may have cured incorrectly, or may require another correction method.
Unknown: hold. Appearance alone cannot identify an old filler, compound, coating, or hazardous constituent.
Cure and hardness are separate gates
“Dry-looking,” elapsed time, surface color, fingertip feel, and another product’s schedule do not prove cure or sanding readiness. Use the exact material maker’s named state and project conditions.
A repair substantially softer than its substrate can dish before the surrounding plane changes. A very hard repair on a softer face can leave the repair standing while the substrate is cut away. A hard, brittle edge can chip instead of level. None of those conditions authorizes more force, a new motion, or an improvised coarser abrasive. They trigger a system review and, where allowed, a protected test.
Clear the hazard and access gates before abrasion
Abrasion converts a solid into airborne and settled material.
Sanding can disturb lead-based paint at the repair perimeter. Until an authorized determination says otherwise, keep the block out of the suspect painted layer and hold the job under the required lead process.
This guide does not assign testing, containment, cleaning verification, dust control, PPE, waste handling, or an exemption.
EPA says not to sand suspect asbestos-containing material and recommends trained, accredited evaluation before planned disturbance (EPA asbestos exposure guidance · EPA remodeling guidance).
Unknown legacy compound, plaster surfacing, resilient-floor repair, backing, texture, or adjacent suspect material is therefore an access hold. Do not sample, abrade, sweep, vacuum, or dispose of it under this guide.
Silica and other dust
The current SDS, hazard assessment, OSHA or applicable state requirements, and project exposure-control plan decide access, engineering controls, housekeeping, respiratory protection, and clearance.
Do not infer safety from hand scale, dampness, a small repair, or the block’s wet-use claim. “Wet or dry” is a product capability for 45360, not a hazard-control decision for the material being abraded.
Establish the work boundary and prove a witness
Before contact, identify the substrate and exposed layers, exact repair material, its maker-defined sanding-ready state, the finish that must receive the repair, the applicable hazard controls, and the plane or profile to preserve. The workpiece must be supported so it cannot flex, chatter, rock, or peel away under the block. On a wall that means a sound, stable assembly; on a removable part it means stable support that does not distort the face. A moving seam, loose panel, unsupported edge, soft skin, or springing veneer is a repair problem, not a sanding technique.
Mark the proud mass under grazing light: place the light low enough that the high throws a readable shadow, then add pencil witness marks across the crown and just inside its transition. The marks are a removal map, not permission to sand the whole surrounding field. Use an accepted straight reference only when the surface is meant to be planar; on a contour, read the intended profile from more than one viewing direction.
Prove the method on a witness
Prove the method first on representative scrap, an approved witness, or a protected part of the work. It must reproduce the material, substrate, cure, geometry, edge, abrasive presentation, cleaning, and finish schedule. Hold a 45360 with contamination, detached abrasive, a distorted body, or an unidentified working surface. The 45320 remains identity-only and is not substituted into the test.
The witness passes only if the high reduces cleanly, the block does not smear or pull the repair, the substrate and bond remain sound, the intended geometry survives, medium removes the opening scratch, cleaning restores a readable surface, and the receiving finish accepts the result. If the test gouges, chips, delaminates, exposes a weak layer, or leaves an unerasable scratch, change the repair or abrasive-system disposition. More force is not the remedy.
Hand-sand the proud mass
This is a qualitative hand method for a localized, fully cured, sound repair. It does not invent numeric pressure, pass count, sanding time, or grit equivalence.
Set the block and your body
Start with the 45360 presentation identified as the coarser side of its documented pair. Cup the block with the palm centered over its broad face and the fingers steering rather than pinching. Keep the wrist in line with the forearm and place the shoulders and stance so the body can drive a short stroke without tipping the hand at either end. Reposition your feet or the supported work instead of reaching across the repair. A long reach rolls the block onto an edge and concentrates the cut.
Set the full abrasive face flat on the crown before moving. Begin with light contact—only enough to let the abrasive engage—and increase no further than the witness proved necessary for a clean cut. Let the coarse presentation do the work. Finger pressure, a cocked wrist, or bearing down on one corner compresses the foam locally and digs a hollow.
Cut with controlled overlapping strokes
On a flat repair, use short, controlled, overlapping strokes across the proud crown while keeping the block face flat and the stroke centered on the high. Change stroke direction between checking intervals so one track does not become a groove. Do not sweep across a feathered edge, drywall face paper, veneer, factory skin, crisp arris, or sound surrounding coating with the coarse presentation.
On a broad ridge, work along its length and then cross its crown only within the mapped high. On a sound contour, follow the profile lengthwise with the block supported across the shape; do not rock it around the curve or dwell at the tangent. Foam can follow a hump as readily as it follows the intended contour, so grazing-light readback—not smooth feel alone—decides whether the crown is actually falling.
Corners and edges need a smaller boundary, not more pressure. Near an inside corner, sand one plane at a time with strokes running along the angle; keep the block from rubbing the finished partner plane. Near an outside corner or crisp edge, stop the broad-face stroke before the arris. If the proud material reaches the edge, support it, use only the tested presentation that can be controlled on that geometry, and work from the field toward—but not over—the arris. Once an edge rounds, chips, lifts, or loses its line, stop: sanding cannot restore removed geometry.
Lift, clear, and read
Lift the block completely and check frequently. Do not inspect through a dust film. Clear the work and block only by the admitted exposure and material-control method; never blow dust into the air, slap the block against the work, or dry-sweep hazardous or unknown residue. For ordinary compatible residue, rotate to a clean identified surface or use the 45360’s claimed rinse-to-clean route only when the repair material, hazard, wastewater, and drying plan also permit it.
Under grazing light, read the pencil marks, crown shadow, transition, adjacent substrate, and block condition. Re-mark only the remaining high. Continue with the same flat, overlapping stroke discipline while all gates remain sound.
Leave the coarse stage when the proud mass is nearly level, not after it has become a hollow. A faint high and intact witness at the transition give the medium presentation material to finish; chasing perfect smoothness with coarse merely deepens the scratch and risks the substrate. Clean the area by the approved interim method, let any permitted damp cleaning reach the required inspection state, then read it again under grazing light and by the accepted plane or profile reference.
Erase, refine, and stop
Move to the 45360 presentation identified as medium and cover every area the coarse presentation touched, again with light-start contact, a flat face, and controlled overlapping strokes. Medium’s job is to remove the coarse scratch and bring the last slight high into the accepted geometry; it is not permission to enlarge the worked field.
This sequence is relational. The separate 09083 claim anchors “150 Medium” only for that product and the line’s medium class; it does not prove that a particular 45360 face is an exact numeric grit. The 45320’s store-named medium/coarse identity supplies no operational mapping at all.
Clean and read the entire corrected area in grazing light. If the receiving finish requires a shallower scratch, transition from medium to the exact finer abrasive and backing selected for that material and coating system. Do not chase a finish-ready surface with coarse, and do not assume medium is the endpoint merely because the crown is gone.
Failure branches
The block clogs or glazes. Stop. The material may be unready, incompatible with the abrasive, contaminated, heat-affected, or simply loading the working surface. Do not invent a cleaner, dressing method, or sharpening method.
The repair smears, rolls, or pulls from the edge. Leave the abrasion stage. Recheck cure, mix, build, bond, substrate condition, and the maker’s permitted correction.
A gouge or hollow appears. Stop subtracting. Preserve the evidence and return to an authorized fill-and-cure loop. More abrasion cannot repair a low.
The feathered edge disappears or face paper fuzzes. Stop before the damage expands. Obtain the exact torn-paper, exposed-core, or recoat treatment; this guide authorizes none.
Veneer thins, a factory skin changes, or fibers lift. Stop immediately.
The repair chips or delaminates. Treat it as bond, brittleness, support, movement, or build evidence. Do not blend the loose boundary outward.
A crisp edge rounds or a profile flattens. The conforming block or contact boundary is wrong for the geometry. Stop and re-establish the repair under an authorized shaping system; abrasion cannot put removed geometry back.
Dust escapes the admitted work area or controls do not perform. Stop work, maintain the access restriction, and follow the exposure-control plan’s failure response. This guide supplies no improvised backup.
The surrounding coating changes color or sheen. The abrasive crossed the admitted repair boundary or the coating was incompatible. Stop and route to the coating system.
Coarse scratch survives the next stage. Return only under the approved abrasive sequence. Primer and coating are not substitutes for scratch removal unless their exact instructions expressly accept that condition.
Finish, cleaning, storage, and waste handoff
After geometry and scratch acceptance, keep the stages separate:
Final abrasive handoff: use only the finer abrasive, backing, and readiness state named by the proved repair-and-coating system.
Cleaning: remove residue only by the receiving system’s method. Hyde says the 45360 can be rinsed to clean; that claim does not authorize a cleaner, immersion practice, drain discharge, or use on hazardous residue.
Block disposition: inspect under the responsible abrasive criterion.
Storage: store each product only under its identified maker or project requirements. No temperature, container, segregation, or shelf-life rule is invented here.
Waste: keep dust, slurry, removed repair material, used protection, wipes, cleaning output, and spent abrasive identified by the material that generated them. The SDS, hazard determination, project plan, and local requirements decide disposition. This guide authorizes no drain, sink, soil, ordinary-trash, recycling, or hazardous-waste route.
Coating: apply primer, sealer, stain, or coating only when its own surface, cleanliness, and readiness gates pass. Inspect again at the coating system’s named observation state; wet coating is not final readback.
Record the exact material, substrate, 45360 identity, test disposition, hazard/access decision, cure gate, observed correction states, finer-system handoff, cleaning and waste route, coating identity, and final acceptance.
The 45360 is the documented correction block. The 45320 remains an exact graph member but has zero accepted product claims, so this guide does not assign it contact with the repair.
What numeric grits are “medium” and “coarse”?
The terms remain relational. Do not translate them through another brand, product family, or nearby guide.
Which face of the 45360 is coarse?
Identify the working presentation on the physical block only under the approved test method.
How do I know the filler is ready to sand?
Use the exact filler or compound maker’s named sanding-readiness state under actual project conditions. Appearance, touch, elapsed time, or another material’s schedule is not proof.
Should heavy filler always be left proud and sanded down?
Placement state, permitted build, and later leveling belong to the exact repair system. This guide begins only after a sound, cured, genuinely proud condition already exists.
Can I use the 45360 wet to control dust?
Hyde supports wet use for the block. Product capability is not system permission.
When should I stop sanding and refill?
Stop when the readback shows a low, hollow, pinhole, shrinkage, gouge, lost edge, or another absence. Abrasion is subtraction; the repair system owns addition.
Is the 45360 the final-sanding tool before paint?
Not automatically. Its documented pair is medium/coarse. If the proved coating system requires a finer surface, transition to the exact authorized finishing abrasive.
What if the repair covers a wall, ceiling, floor field, or large panel?
Hold this hand-scale workflow. Broad plane correction needs the responsible system tool, abrasive, exposure control, and acceptance method. A foam block can detail a local high; it cannot prove a field plane.
History footnote
Fillers long predate sanding sponges. Conformity remains the block’s advantage on profiles and its limitation on dead-flat work.
