Diagnose cutting decline before removing the blade
“Dull” is only one cause. Reproduce the symptom on a low-consequence patch with one controlled straight pull—no added force, twisting, or prying—then stop.
Contamination or material loading
Suspect contamination when decline begins abruptly in gummy or softened material, residue is visible at the cutting line, or performance varies with material pickup. Remove loose material only by an approved compatible dry method.
Ordinary cutting-edge wear
Suspect wear when the working line remains continuous but force rises gradually and the blade burnishes instead of lifting material across the pass. Inspect blade, seat, and retention as one system
Under good light inspect both working lines, corners, faces, and body for residue, wear, chip, crack-like indication, missing material, bend, twist, corrosion, impact, or prior abrasion. Do not flex-test, touch-test, or grind. Continue only with established identity, a sound body, a continuous selected edge, and no unresolved damage or contamination. Crack, distortion, unaccounted fragment, or uncertain grinding condemns the whole blade.
Host seat
Inspect supporting and locating surfaces for loose debris, residue, damage, deformation, cracking, corrosion, packed material, impact, or modification. Do not scrape, file, sand, stone, bend, peen, or chemically strip the seat.

Retention system

Use the supported lifecycle: second edge, then replacement
The maintenance decision has no sharpening branch.
If contamination was the only cause and the same edge is clean, continuous, securely seated, and passes the witness test, return it without rotating merely for ceremony.
If the working edge shows ordinary decline and the other edge is unused, clean, continuous, and undamaged, place the sound second edge into service under the exact 10610 instruction.
If the working edge is chipped but the blade body and unused edge are accepted, use the unused edge only when the exact procedure safely contains the damaged edge and the complete assembly passes inspection and test.

Restore every required component by the approved method, with no copied torque or extra force.
Recheck seating, completeness, and position; perform only the specified static retention check.
Any movement, click, changed position, uneven presentation, damaged part, or uncertainty fails reassembly. Contain the scraper and return to inspection or qualified service.
Run a qualified witness test
A witness test proves only the maintained assembly in the intended condition. Use representative scrap or a concealed low-consequence area and a person qualified under the applicable procedure; record identities, edge status, material, time, and result.
Complete the static inspection and retention check before the blade touches work.
Make one short, light, straight pull using the normal 10610 scraping method. Do not add force to make the test pass.
Observe whether the edge lifts material cleanly and tracks straight without chatter, a repeated scratch line, steering, blade movement, or abnormal force.
Stop and inspect the blade position and retention state again. The post-action condition must match the pre-test state.
Pass: clean controlled cut, no tracking defect, movement, new damage, or prohibited residue transfer. Fail: drag, chatter, steering, scratch tracking, movement, changed seating, new chip, abnormal force, contamination, or uncertainty. Reinspect once; never increase force or cycle unsupported maintenance.
Store a service-ready scraper dry, identified, protected from edge contact and impact, and readable without a blind reach. Hyde names no guard, sheath, carrier, coating, or storage accessory for 11170.
Keep an unused 11170 in its identified original package or an approved rigid edge-protecting system, never loose or mixed. Segregate removed blades from new and service-ready stock.
What goes wrong—and the correct branch
“It stopped cutting, so it must be dull.” Clean and diagnose first. Loading, mismatch, a loose blade, poor seating, or a chip can all mimic dullness.
“The edge has one tiny notch but still works.” A notch can produce a repeated scratch track and may indicate fracture.
“Tighten whatever holds it until the chatter stops.” Chatter can be substrate, contamination, damage, or failed retention.
“It is two inches, so it fits.” No. The proved pair is 11170 and 10610. Same width is not host compatibility.
“Clean it with the solvent already on the truck.” No universal solvent is authorized. Identify the residue and use a method compatible with the blade, host, substrate, next coating, people, and waste route.
“A diamond hone will save the card.” Physical possibility is not a Hyde procedure. Do not improvise carbide reconditioning.
“A successful cut proves the blade is secure.” The static check, controlled witness cut, and post-test retention readback are separate gates.
The supported lifecycle is approved cleaning, use of the sound second edge, then replacement. Do not improvise filing, honing, grinding, or edge geometry.
How can I tell contamination from a worn edge? Loading usually follows gummy material and appears as residue or variable cutting; ordinary wear develops gradually along a continuous working line. Clean only by an approved compatible route, then retest once.
How do I flip the blade? Follow the current exact 10610 blade-service instruction.
