How to Install Linoleum
On the floor it was never two jobs. This is linoleum's own guide, sibling to *Install sheet vinyl flooring*; where the two trades share a move it says so, and where linoleum is its own stiffer, older, more particular animal it says that louder.

Job: take a room from ready subfloor to a finished linoleum floor — fitted, bonded to a full spread, rolled, and (where there's a seam) sealed or welded.
Time: one open room in one piece over a sound subfloor is a long day, and — as with vinyl — the knife work is minutes of it; prep, the adhesive's open time, and rolling own the clock. Linoleum adds two clock items vinyl doesn't: a longer acclimation for a stiff sheet, and a moisture verdict on the subfloor you do not skip. Repairs or leveling over an old floor add a day before this one starts.
Difficulty: unforgiving, and brittle besides. Every move can be learned in an afternoon, but the material is one piece and it is stiffer and more fragile than the vinyl that replaced it: a wrong cut is bought again, and a corner forced cold cracks where a vinyl sheet would only have complained. Nerve at the knife, discipline at the trowel, patience with the sheet.

20200 2-1/2" long-point Flooring Knife — the fitting lead. Hyde's duty line is "for multi-material cutting," which is the modern catalog's closest thing to the old *linoleum knife* designation; linoleum, felt, and backing are its home materials, and the long point keeps your knuckles off the floor down a whole perimeter.
20610 3-1/2" Flooring/Drywall Knife (long point) — reach and leverage for thick, heavy commercial linoleum, where a 2-1/2" handle fouls the work before the blade is through. Size is its whole documented difference from the 20350, and this page claims nothing more.
20250 2-1/2" short-point Flooring Knife — the durable stub for the forceful cuts: score-and-snap on linoleum tile, rough strip-cutting, and any stroke where the tip takes a prying side-load. Hyde's axis, applied: long points protect knuckles, short points survive abuse.
The honest notch caveat, first and loudest: the notch is the adhesive label's call, never this page's and never the truck's. These are the line's *linoleum-duty* meters — the tools Hyde built for the trade — but a modern linoleum adhesive names its own trowel, and that number outranks everything here. Match the meter to the pail.
Everything else (the store doesn't sell these — stated plainly, because that's the moat): the linoleum manufacturer's specified adhesive — and its primer where the label calls for one; the label outranks this page on both, and linoleum's adhesives are not vinyl's · a 75-to-100-lb three-section floor roller, rented — a full-spread floor is not done until it's rolled, and this catalog doesn't carry one · a hand seam roller, and either a heat-weld kit (groover, welding gun, matching welding rod) for commercial seams or the maker's cold seam sealer for residential ones — all specialist, none of them store items (the seam is treated honestly below) · steel straightedge · tape measure, chalk line, pencil · kraft or rosin paper and tape for a template · a subfloor moisture and pH test (a taped-down poly square overnight at minimum; calcium-chloride or RH probe and a pH pencil where the label demands) — linoleum earns this more than vinyl does · portland-based floor patch, and embossing leveler where an old embossed floor stays down · a sacrificial surface for the rough cuts (driveway, garage slab, a sheet of OSB) · clean rags and the exact cleaner the adhesive label names · knee pads.
Before you start: linoleum is not vinyl, and the floor under it decides everything
The short version stands on this page too: old vinyl-asbestos and asphalt tile, the felt backing under old sheet goods, and the black "cutback" adhesive beneath them can contain asbestos, and federal guidance is blunt — don't sand or disturb suspect material, and test before a remodel touches it (EPA — Protect Your Family from Exposures to Asbestos). Note the irony worth stating out loud: genuine old *linoleum* — linseed oil and jute — is not itself an asbestos product, but the felt and cutback it was so often laid over are exactly the suspect layers, so the boundary lands on this floor regardless. Going over a sound, well-adhered old floor is the path EPA itself prefers where flooring needs replacing; what it demands is Step 3's flatness and Step 2's moisture verdict.
The moisture verdict — the line linoleum draws harder than any other resilient floor. Vinyl is plastic and shrugs off a slightly damp slab; linoleum is linseed oil on a woven jute back, and both hate moisture and alkali. Vapor rising through a slab carries alkalinity that saponifies the linseed binder and rots the jute — the floor blanches, curls at the edges, and lets go months after a picture-perfect install. So test to the adhesive label's number, not your thumb: tape a square of poly down overnight and read the condensation in the morning at minimum; do the calcium-chloride or in-situ-RH and pH test where the label requires it. A slab that would carry vinyl can still be too wet or too alkaline for linoleum. This is the single most linoleum-specific gate on the page, and it is not optional.
Flat, dry, clean — then acclimate warm. Fill lows and joints with portland-based floor patch feathered flat — the notch meters a bond, not a topography, so never level with a heavier adhesive spread. Over an old embossed floor staying down, kill the texture with embossing leveler, skimmed across the face — never by sanding (that's the asbestos boundary again, and on any old resilient floor it is absolute). Then vacuum like the last pass is a clean-room pass, because it is. Now acclimate the roll in the room it's going into, at the room's normal temperature, for the window the label names — and give linoleum *more* respect here than vinyl: a cold linoleum sheet is a stiff, brittle one that cracks at the first bend and fights every crease. Warm sheet, warm room.
Know what you actually bought — the true-linoleum-versus-vinyl fork. Most flooring sold as "linoleum" for the last seventy years is not linoleum at all; it is vinyl (PVC), which merely took linoleum's place and kept its name. The fork matters because the two behave nothing alike at the knife and at the slab: if your goods are genuine linoleum (Marmoleum and its kin), they are stiffer, more brittle, and moisture-sensitive — follow this guide. If they are vinyl wearing the word, go to *Install sheet vinyl flooring* instead; its meters and its knife (the vinyl-duty 20450) are built for that material. And one more sub-fork: this guide is glue-down sheet linoleum. Click-plank and floating linoleum tile are a different job — floated, not troweled — and are out of scope here.
Choose your fit method and confirm the bond. Small, cut-up rooms — baths, laundries, anything with a toilet flange and four doorways — reward a kraft-paper template: paper taped into the room and trimmed to the walls, fixtures cut, then carried to the sheet and traced. Big open rooms go faster direct-fit: rough-cut oversize, lay in, trim in place — the sequence below. Sheet linoleum is generally a full spread into wet adhesive; confirm the bond and the adhesive against the maker's label, because linoleum's adhesives and their working windows are their own thing, not vinyl's.
The fit — the knife side
Rough-cut the sheet three inches oversize, somewhere sacrificial, with the sheet warm. Lay out the room's dimensions plus about 3" per side — and measure off the pattern, not just the tape: chalk a control line down a repeat in the print, because the walls will not be straight and the pattern must be. Then make the long cuts with the pull the hawkbill exists for — pierce with the point, let it ride to the sacrificial surface, lay the blade into the draw, and pull toward you so the curved edge feeds the stiff sheet into the cut instead of letting it climb off the tip. The 20200 leads; on thick, heavy commercial linoleum where the handle fouls before the blade is through, the 20610's 3-1/2" reach earns its keep, taking the long shear in one pass a shorter blade must saw at. Keep the sheet warm the whole time — cold linoleum chips past the cut line.
Lay in and relieve the corners — and warm before you bend. Carry the sheet in and let it lap up every wall. It cannot fall into place until the corners release it: at each inside corner, pierce the point in and pull a short diagonal downward; at outside corners, run the relief cut upward from the floor so the material wraps. Here is linoleum's cardinal rule, the one the vinyl generation forgot: the sheet is stiff and brittle and will crack if you force it cold. Warm the crease and corner lines — a warm room, or gentle heat played along the bend — and the same fold that would have split goes over clean. Every relief cut is a pierce-start in the middle of the material, the open point's defining move; commit to it, because a timid scratch under a stiff, tensioned sheet invites a crack to run past your line faster than vinyl ever would.
Crease and trim the perimeter. Press the sheet hard into the wall-floor junction to crease it — a block of wood or the knife's spine does the pressing — then trim along the crease with the blade drawn toward you, the spine leaned into the wall as your running guide, one or two smooth pulls per wall run rather than a sawing dozen. This is the long point's headline job: a room's perimeter is the longest stretch of knuckles-an-inch-off-the-floor work in the trade, and Hyde's axis sentence — long points protect from scraped knuckles — was written by exactly this pass. They cost you the pierce — a hook must start over an edge — which is the whole reason the open point and the captured hook both exist. Fit with the point; make the substrate-critical pulls with the hook.
Dry-fit check before any adhesive. Walk the whole perimeter: creases tight, no gap past what the base will cover, pattern square to the room's long sightline, doorway and fixture cuts seated, corners relieved without a crack. Full-spread adhesive is a one-way door — this is the last cheap minute of the job.
The bond — the adhesive side
Fold back half the room and pick the meter off the pail. Fold the fitted sheet back on itself to mid-room without creasing it, and read the adhesive label for its trowel. This line carries the linoleum-duty meters that label will name: the 19030's room-scale 1/4" V for a whole floor of a bodied linoleum paste; the 19060's 3/32" U linoleum edge when one economy trowel has to cover this floor and a vinyl job too; the 19090 spreader's rounded 3/32" U for thresholds, doorway returns, and repair-scale spreads, where its ridges vent lower void than the V; the 19040's finer double-U where the label calls for a leaner bed. Then spread like the trade's law says: hold a consistent ~45°, comb straight ridges in one direction, never swirled. Parallel ridges slump sideways under the sheet and push their air out the open ends of the channels; swirls seal air into closed loops, and a closed loop is a bubble with a schedule. Two more laws from the line: the notch meters a *bond, not a topography* — flatten the subfloor, don't spread your way over a low spot; and never switch meters mid-floor — two different beds under one sheet is a bond defect by definition.
Respect the open time — and know it's the label's, not vinyl's. Every resilient adhesive has a window between spreading and laying the goods, and linoleum's adhesives run their own way — many are worked wetter and to a shorter tack than a vinyl contact bond. The number is the label's, moving with temperature, humidity, and how porous the subfloor is; the honest instrument is your fingertip, reading the tack the label describes. Down too early and the sheet floats on wet adhesive — bubbles, oozing seams, soft spots for weeks; too late, after the bed skins, and the bond is starved — it holds today and releases by spring. Spread only what you can lay and roll inside the window.
Lay in and roll — the step that makes it a floor. Roll the folded half down into the adhesive from the fold line outward, letting the sheet lie into the bed rather than dropping trapped air in under it. Then roll the floor with the rented 75-to-100-lb three-section roller, from the center outward in both directions, overlapping passes, collapsing the combed ridges into a continuous wetted film and driving air ahead of it. Repeat for the second half; hand-roll the perimeter and anywhere the big roller can't reach. A warm, acclimated sheet rolls flat and stays flat; a cold one fights the bed and hides a size change for later. Rolling is not optional finish work — an unrolled full-spread floor is a field of intact ridges and air channels wearing a linoleum blanket.
Seams — and the honest boundary linoleum draws here. Where the room is wider than the goods, cut the seam before its adhesive goes down: overlap the two sheets a couple of inches with the pattern matched, then double-cut — one pass through both layers against a steel straightedge — so the edges mate however the cut wanders. Much of the trade sets the flooring knife down for this one cut and reaches for a straightedge and a fresh disposable edge (the utility line's territory, granted honestly). But closing a linoleum seam is where this floor leaves the catalog behind: commercial linoleum seams are typically heat-welded — the joint grooved and fused with a matching welding rod run from a hot-air gun, then pared flush — a specialist step this store tools none of; residential goods may instead take the maker's cold seam sealer. Either way it is skilled work and the failure-prone heart of the job. The honest first-timer's scope is a one-piece room: choose goods wide enough to skip the seam, or hire the seam. (Flash-coving the sheet up the wall as its own base is another step past that line still.)
Trim out. Thresholds and transition metals over the sheet's cut edge at doorways; cove base or shoe molding over the perimeter cut. The fit tolerance at the walls is whatever the base covers — which is why Step 8 asked for tight, not perfect.
Let it cure on the label's clock. Cure is the manufacturer's number, not this page's: keep foot traffic light, keep furniture and point and rolling loads off, and — linoleum especially — hold off wet-washing and stressing any seam until cure is complete, because early water is exactly the moisture insult Step 2 warned about. Felt pads under everything that returns.
Don't panic when the new floor looks yellowish — that's ambering, not a defect. Fresh linoleum often carries a temporary yellow cast, called ambering: it is the linseed oil oxidizing, the very reaction that gives the floor its durability, and it clears with light — a few hours in bright sun, longer under artificial light. It reads strongest on blue and grey shades, an area kept dark (under a rug, inside a closet) will hold the hue until light reaches it, and putting a finish over it changes nothing. It is a property of the material, not a fault in your work (Forbo — What Is Ambering?). Vinyl never does this; linoleum does because it is alive with linseed oil, which is the whole reason it exists.
Wash the tools before the adhesive decides for you. The trowel's notches are its entire value — adhesive cured into the meter, or a nick pried into it later, under-delivers on every floor after this one, so wash the blade before the pail's residue kicks, on its label. Wipe the knives' carbon blades clean and dry — resilient adhesives and damp subfloors bloom rust on neglected carbon steel — and touch up the inside curve with a slip stone following the sweep; the full routine is its own guide (*Sharpen and maintain a flooring knife*).
What goes wrong (and the fix)
A corner or crease cracked or blanched white as you bent it. Linoleum forced cold — the single most common linoleum-specific failure. Warm the sheet and the bend line and the same fold goes over clean; a white stress line means you're bending a cold, stiff sheet a vinyl-trained hand would have gotten away with.
The floor blanches, curls at the edges, or lets go months later. Moisture and alkalinity coming up through the slab into the linseed binder and the jute back — the failure Step 2 exists to prevent. There is no fix after the fact worth the name; it is prevented with a moisture and pH test *before* the adhesive, never diagnosed after.
Bubbles the day after. Swirled combing, skipped or late rolling, or adhesive that skinned before lay-in. Inside the working window a bubble chases out to the edge under the roller; after cure, the honest fixes are the trade's small slit-or-syringe repairs, and a good argument for having rolled properly.
Trowel ridges reading through in raking light. The classic over-notch telegraph — a meter bigger than the label's, or the trowel held too steep. Linoleum is stiff but not immune; there is no post-hoc fix, only Step 10 done right or the floor bought again.
Adhesive oozing at seams and edges. Over-notched meter or no flash time — clean it now, with the cleaner the label names; cured squeeze-out on the wear layer is permanent in practice.
A seam opening. Under-rolled seam zone, starved adhesive at the edge, or a weld/sealer skipped "because it looked closed." All three are cheaper on day one than any day after — and if the goods needed a welded seam, that was never a job for an unwelded butt.
The knife climbs out of the cut or chatters. Dull edge or the blade laid too flat — more muscle is never the fix. Hone the inside curve, steepen the entry, keep the point that starts every cut, and let the tip ride the sacrificial surface.
The new floor looks yellow. Ambering — see the After step. Give it light and time; it is the material working exactly as designed.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
Linoleum is a named man's invention, which the trade rarely gets to say. The Scot Frederick Walton patented it in 1863, after watching the skin that forms on a can of drying linseed oil and realizing that oxidized linseed — *linoxyn* — could be compounded with pine rosin, cork and wood flour, and mineral fillers, and pressed onto a jute back into a tough, resilient sheet (StudyGuides — Linoleum overview). The name is the recipe: Latin *linum* (flax, the source of linseed) plus *oleum* (oil). Vinyl displaced it after the Second World War and kept its name in the public's mouth — so that today most "linoleum" is nothing of the sort.
