How to Hang Drywall on a Wall

Job: close a framed wall with drywall — sheets hung tight, cut clean, and fastened to exact depth — so the taping trade inherits a wall it can finish in three easy coats instead of fighting for a week.
Time: two people, the walls of an average bedroom in a first-timer's working day; a practiced pair hangs it before lunch. Cutting and fitting eat the clock — driving screws is the fast part.
Difficulty: sequence and strength more than skill. No single operation is hard; the discipline is order (ceiling first, top course first, edges last) and depth (a screw window a fraction of a millimeter tall). Every shortcut is inherited, visibly, by whoever tapes the wall — even when that's you next weekend.
Everything else: the board itself, drywall screws, a variable-speed drill, tape measure, chalk line for long rips, pencil, a flat scrap block for persuasion taps, sawhorses or a cutting bench, and a broom. This walkthrough is the screw-attached method; glue-and-screw schedules (panel adhesive on the studs, fewer fasteners) are a real system with their own manufacturer rules, not covered here.
Before you start: the wall the taper inherits
Ceiling first — always. If the ceiling is getting board, it goes up before any wall sheet. The law is structural, not ceremonial: wall sheets get pressed tight up under the ceiling board, so the wall's top edge carries and closes the ceiling's perimeter — edges the ceiling's own fasteners are weakest at. Walk the framing while you can still see it. Sight down every stud; a crowned stud telegraphs a bow through the finished wall forever, and now — plane it, shim it, or swap it — is the last cheap moment. Check for missing nailers in corners, back out or drive home any proud fastener in the framing, and photograph where every cable and pipe runs before board covers them; the picture costs nothing and settles every future "can I screw here." Then transfer the layout: pencil each stud's centerline onto the floor and onto the ceiling board above, because in ten minutes the studs are invisible and every fastener still has to find one.
Choose the orientation honestly. Residential walls default to horizontal — sheets run perpendicular to the studs — for three real reasons: every sheet crosses every stud, so the board bridges small framing irregularities instead of following one bad stud; total seam length on a typical wall is lower (one long mid-height seam beats two or three floor-to-ceiling ones); and that one seam lands around four feet — the taper works it standing, not off a bench. Vertical wins in the honest exceptions: a segment narrow enough for one stood sheet to close seam-free (closet returns, the wall beside a door), and commercial or fire-rated assemblies whose listings require edges on framing — follow the listing, not this page.
Plan the seams before the first cut. Three rules draw the whole layout. Factory edges meet factory edges: a sheet's long edges are factory-tapered — recessed so tape and compound sit below the wall's plane — and two tapers meeting mid-wall make the valley the taper fills flat. Cut edges have no taper; send them to the floor line and into corners, where base trim and corner tape hide them. Butt ends land on stud centers, far apart: the short ends are square, so a butt joint always finishes proud (the taping guide calls it the honest problem of that trade); land every butt centered on a stud — half the stud face for this sheet, half for the next — and offset the butts course-to-course by several stud bays so no two line up. No seams at opening corners: door and window corners concentrate the building's movement, and a joint landing at one cracks on a schedule. Cut openings *out* of full sheets — L-shaped cuts, the opening falling mid-sheet — rather than assembling joints around the frame. Sketch the wall on the back of the board if it helps; thirty seconds of arithmetic here saves a course of regret.
The hang
Top course first, tight to the lid. Measure from the corner to the center of the farthest stud a full sheet reaches — that stud center is where the butt end lands. Two hangers lift the sheet, long edge up, and press it hard against the ceiling board; a half-inch-class sheet runs around fifty pounds, so set up the hold before the lift, not during. Working alone or tired: drive a pair of temporary screws partway into studs at the line where the sheet's bottom edge will sit, rest the sheet on them, slide it tight to the corner, and you've built yourself a second pair of hands for the price of two screws. Tack the sheet — a few fasteners along the top — before anyone lets go.
Cut on the horses, true the edge, and don't force the fit. What matters here is the fit doctrine: cut a strong eighth to a quarter inch short of the space. A sheet levered and crushed into a too-tight slot arrives with broken corners and crumbled edges; a sheet a hair short arrives perfect, and compound owns the difference. A snapped edge that fits rough gets two passes of the drywall rasp (09985, wall-repair line) — shave to the line, never past it.
Fasten to the schedule, edges last. Press the board against the stud beside each screw as you drive — the screw's job is holding, not pulling a floating sheet the last quarter inch. Start fastening where the sheet bears on framing and work outward across it, never corners-first (corners-first traps a bow in the middle that no screw can flatten later). Edges last: the sheet's perimeter goes on after the field is set, so edge screws land on a board that's already flat and don't crush out toward the open side.
Drive every screw to the window: dimpled, never broken. The whole fastening trade lives in a depth window a fraction of a millimeter tall — head set *below* the wall's plane so a knife can bury it, face paper *unbroken* because the paper is the board's tensile strength and a screw through it is holding crushed gypsum, which is to say nothing. The screw adapter bit (09039) makes the window mechanical instead of reflexive: its depth finder lands on the board's face as the screw reaches depth and counter-sets the head, drawing the paper in evenly — run the drill fast and feather the trigger at the end, which is why its compatibility claim says *variable-speed*. Tore the paper anyway? That screw is dead: drive a companion two inches away and leave both for the spotting coat. Felt a screw spin free — no stud under it? Back it out, find the centerline you marked in Step 2, move it; the empty hole is a spotting-coat problem, not a today problem. Know the audit coming for you: the taping guide's very first step walks every fastener with a knife and listens for the click of a proud head.
The hammer rides along for everything that isn't a screw. On a modern wall the screws do the fastening, and the drywall hammer (09068) does the rest of the hanging trade's manual work: persuasion — a flat scrap block against the sheet's edge and a firm tap walks a sheet sideways into a tight fit without crushing the edge; pry — the hatchet end levers a sheet that final half inch when gravity wins; tacking and nail service — where crews still tack sheets with nails before screwing off, and on every repair that meets old nailed board, the hammer's crowned face sets the nail below plane inside a smooth dimple with the paper intact — same law as the screws, delivered by hand.
The bottom course: knees down, lever up. Rip the course so its cut edge lands at the floor with about half an inch of gap — base trim covers it, and the gap keeps board paper up out of any floor moisture — and its factory edge meets the top course's factory edge, tapers together, at the mid-wall seam. That seam must close *tight*: set the sheet on the rolling drywall lifting tool (09081), foot on the lever, and ease the sheet up until it snugs against the upper course — the foot holds it there under load while both hands steady the board and run the fasteners. Step, snug, screw, release. Openings and penetrations — cut them right or inherit them forever. Outlet and switch boxes: the professional move for a mid-wall box is to hang the sheet *over* it and cut in place — plunge the jab saw (09016) inside the box's footprint, saw out to its sides, then ride the box itself as the template; the fit is guaranteed by the thing being fit. Round penetrations — recessed cans, vent ducts — are the circle cutter's job (09110), scored on the horses before the sheet goes up and the plug tapped out clean: *Cut Round Holes for Recessed Lights and Vents*. Doors and windows: hang the full sheet across the opening, then cut back to the frame — jab saw down the sides, score against the header and snap the flap forward — which is exactly how the no-seams-at-corners rule from Step 4 gets obeyed without thinking about it.
Walk the wall like the taper will. Run a flat blade lightly over every fastener row: a metallic click is a proud screw — drive it now with the 09039, ten seconds, versus a gouged knife-stroke later. Press each sheet edge and corner: anything that moves gets another screw. Find every broken-paper fastener and give it its companion. Any gap between sheets wider than about a quarter inch gets flagged in pencil — the taping guide pre-fills those with setting compound before tape ever touches them. Rasp down any butt edge standing proud. Then sweep, because the next trade works off stilts and ladders and your offcuts are underfoot.
Hand it over. The wall's next owner is *Tape and Finish Drywall Joints* — the guide this one has been setting up the whole way. A wall hung to this page gives the taper tapered valleys to fill, tight seams to tape, buried fasteners to spot in rows, and zero repairs before the first coat: three easy coats, exactly as promised at the top.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
Broken face paper at a screw. Overdriven — too much speed at the end of the stroke, or no depth control at all. The screw holds nothing; drive a companion two inches away, leave both heads for the spotting coat, and let the depth finder do the stopping from here on.
Proud screws everywhere at taping time. Under-driven — usually a cautious first-timer easing off too early, or driving without pressing the board home. The fix costs ten seconds each *now* (Step 12's blade-walk) and a ruined stroke each *later*; walk the wall before the mud walks it for you.
A crack growing out of a window or door corner. A seam was built at the opening's corner — the one place Step 4 forbids. Prevention is the real fix (L-cuts, openings mid-sheet); after the fact, expect the crack to return on any repair that doesn't move the joint, and re-hang that bay if the wall matters.
Stairstep butts. Courses offset by the same lazy half-sheet every time stack the butt joints into a marching diagonal band — each joint fine alone, the pattern unmistakable down the wall in afternoon light, because every butt is a slight crown and the eye connects them. Randomize the offsets by whole stud bays; the stagger should have no rhythm for raking light to find.
The course seam that gapped. The bottom sheet was fastened where gravity left it instead of levered tight — now it's a soft, wide joint at the wall's most visible height. If it's screwed off, back the course's fasteners out, lift it properly against the upper course (Step 10), and re-fasten; mudding a gap flat is the taper fighting your wall, and it cracks anyway.
A field of screws into nothing. Free-spinning screws mean a stud line was guessed, not marked. Back them out, strike the real centerline from the floor and ceiling marks (Step 2), refasten on it — and fill the misses at spotting time. Ten pencil marks before hanging beat forty ghost holes after.
