Job: Lay out, hand-cut, set, and finish glazed ceramic tile around a toilet flange, drain, supply pipe, valve stub-out, or similar plumbing penetration without loading the pipe, defeating the cover, or damaging the assembly
Time: Thirty minutes to several hours per penetration after layout; longer when plumbing, flange, substrate, or waterproofing must be corrected first
Difficulty: Advanced — the cut is usually hidden, but its center, clearance, installation motion, and relationship to the plumbing assembly must all be right

The cut edge is rarely the visible finish. A toilet base, flange, escutcheon, valve trim, or drain body covers it. That forgiveness is useful, but it is not permission to cut blindly.
The opening must be:
large enough for installation, clearance, movement, and service;
small enough to remain under the actual cover;
centered on the finished penetration;
shaped without a crack into the keep-side;
compatible with waterproofing and plumbing details.
Identify the penetration and its final state
Name the exact condition:
toilet closet flange;
tub/shower valve body or trim;
supply pipe/stub-out;
radiator or hydronic pipe;
waste/vent penetration;
floor-mounted fixture anchors;
decorative sleeve or escutcheon.
Determine whether the plumbing is already final, temporarily stubbed, or scheduled after tile.
Do not template from a temporary cap when the final valve, flange, sleeve, or trim has a different footprint. Obtain the actual component or its controlled drawing.
Assign trade boundaries before cutting
The tile setter controls the tile opening and finish. The plumber or qualified designer controls:
flange elevation and anchorage;
pipe support and alignment;
pressure/leak testing;
fixture seal and fastening;
Waterproofing design controls the penetration seal, reinforcement, drain/flange integration, cure, and test.
Do not use tile to hold a loose pipe in position. Do not bury a flange defect beneath a toilet. Do not enlarge a waterproofing opening because the tile cut is inconvenient.
Verify shutdown, cleanliness, and hazard controls
Where work could load or damage a live water line, shut off and drain through the plumbing procedure. Protect open pipes/drains from chips, slurry, mortar, and tools.
Wear eye protection for drilling, nipping, sawing, and snapping, and select hand protection for the cut and puncture exposure without sacrificing control.
Drilling or dry abrading silica-bearing tile can generate respirable crystalline silica. Occupational work must follow the applicable route under OSHA’s construction silica standard. Use wet/capture methods only when every selected tool and tile manual authorizes the complete setup and the plumbing/waterproofing assembly permits it.
Seal the drain opening before creating fragments. Remove the seal only through the plumbing sequence.
Confirm the hand-tool material boundary
Use this guide on glazed ceramic that proves on a spare.

Porcelain, stone, glass, thick quarry tile, large format, and finish-critical holes often need a diamond wet saw, hole saw, grinder system, rail cutter, or fabricator. This store sells no wet saw or rail cutter. Use the correct equipment rather than converting broken tile into a testing program.
Lay out the tile field around the penetration
Dry-lay the approved grid with joint width and movement accommodation.
Compare three arrangements:
penetration fully inside one tile;
penetration crossing one tile edge;
penetration centered on a grout intersection.
A split opening can be cut as two open half-moons and may be easier to install. A centered interior opening can eliminate a grout joint under a toilet or trim. Choose through field balance, cut strength, waterproofing, fixture cover, and service—not cutting convenience alone.
Avoid narrow bridges between the opening and tile edge. Shift the grid when it improves the complete room without creating slivers elsewhere.
Determine the cover envelope
Place the actual toilet base, escutcheon, trim ring, or flange component over a template surface.
outside cover footprint;
required fastener/service zones;
maximum tile opening that remains concealed;
minimum plumbing/waterproofing clearance;
The safe tile cut lies between the functional minimum and the cover maximum.
Do not assume a toilet base covers a circle centered perfectly on the flange. Fixture footprints vary and can leave surprising corners visible.
For an escutcheon, confirm it can slide over fittings and seat flat after tile thickness and sealant.
Make a full-size field template
Reference the penetration center from established tile control lines, not from a wandering wall.
Template the exact tile position:
movement/sealant zone;
Cut the template and place it over the plumbing. Then place the actual cover over the template. Verify clearance and concealment simultaneously.
For a toilet, verify the fixture’s installation motion and fastener positions. Do not let tile cover slots, bolts, anchors, or service access required by the flange/fixture system.
Choose the half-moon branch
Use an open-edge half-moon when the penetration intersects a tile edge and the final broken edge is covered.
Transfer the template. Mark waste.
With the 19400:
support the tile glaze-up;
begin at the open edge, well inside waste;
take small partial-jaw bites;
alternate around the arc;
preserve a margin to the finish line;
reduce bite size near the line;
ease sharp/proud points through the tile-approved method.
For a large toilet-flange arc spanning two or more tiles, label each piece and cut it in final orientation. Dry-assemble the complete ring around a flange mockup or the protected actual condition.
The nipped edge belongs under the toilet or trim. If it remains visible, change tools or add intentional finish.
Choose the enclosed-opening branch
Use an enclosed opening only when the tile can be drilled/threaded and installed over the plumbing without forcing.
Verify the physical 19420 with its accepted frame and instructions.
Use the tile/bit system to create a starter hole in waste:
support the tile completely;
control bit skating;
use approved speed/cooling;
avoid impact unless expressly permitted;
protect the finish;
inspect for radial cracks.
Then, through the frame procedure:
isolate/disassemble the saw;
thread the blade through the starter opening;
reassemble and tension correctly;
establish the abrasive kerf in waste;
turn gradually toward the line;
support tile and waste;
leave a controlled final bridge;
support and release the waste.
Do not invent an end-fitting removal method. If the physical blade cannot be threaded through the opening under its verified system, use another cutting method.
Fit around an installed toilet flange
Protect the flange and opening from chips/mortar.
Dry-place the ring of cut tiles around it.
tile clears the flange body and required anchorage;
cover/base will conceal the opening;
joints align with the room;
tile does not prevent bolts or fasteners from working;
mortar can support tile edges;
waterproofing detail remains intact;
finish plane suits the fixture/plumbing plan.
Do not notch tile so tightly that it becomes a shim or anchor for the flange. Do not pack mortar into service slots.
If the flange is loose, damaged, corroded, incorrectly located, or at the wrong planned elevation, stop for plumbing correction before tile closes access.
Fit where the flange will be installed after tile
Use the controlled plumbing detail for rough opening, anchorage substrate, finish elevation, fastener path, and waterproofing.
Protect the future attachment zone. Do not leave unsupported tile cantilevered into the opening where flange tightening can crack it.
Document hidden framing/anchors before setting if the project requires it.
The tile opening must support the final sequence; this guide supplies no universal flange height or hole diameter.
Fit around a supply pipe or valve stub-out
Confirm the pipe’s final center and projection after wall/floor build-up.
The cut must:
clear the pipe without using it as a template punch;
allow the escutcheon to seat;
preserve specified sealant/movement space;
allow valve/connection service;
avoid sharp tile contact;
maintain waterproofing penetration detail.
For a pipe on a tile edge, a concealed half-moon is efficient. For a pipe inside one tile, use the verified enclosed-opening route or an appropriate hole-saw/fabrication method.
Do not spring an escutcheon over an oversized fitting without verifying the actual installation sequence.
Handle a floor drain as an assembly, not just a circle
Drain work adds slope, grate/frame elevation, waterproofing connection, sealant, and cut symmetry.
Use the drain manufacturer and selected tile method for:
mortar bed/slope;
membrane clamping/bonding;
A nipped or rod-sawn cut can form a concealed curve in ceramic; it does not establish the drain detail.
Dry-assemble the surrounding tiles and grate. Confirm water-shedding plane and movement/sealant requirements before setting.
Prove the opening on a spare
Use representative tile to test:
bite size for the body/glaze;
saw/frame behavior;
Do not test a rod system for the first time on the one piece whose grout joints already align with the entire bathroom.
Record the successful support and direction. Keep it local; it is not a Hyde specification.
Test the installation motion
A correct circle can still be impossible to install over a valve, pipe bend, flange bolt, or fixed trim.
Move the tile through the exact approach:
over and around;
tilted then lowered;
paired with the neighboring half;
before/after a removable component.
Do not force a narrow ceramic bridge. Redesign the split or coordinate component removal through the plumber.
For toilet tiles, dry-assemble the full group; one piece’s easy motion may trap the last.
Inspect and finish the cut
Reject cracks entering keep-side. Inspect starter holes and narrow bridges with raking light.
Remove sharp/proud points only by the tile-approved method. Vacuum/collect residue; do not dry sweep silica-bearing dust.
Place the cover/fixture template again. Confirm the opening hides at the least-forgiving orientation.
Do not rely on grout to fill a cut that escapes the cover.
Set while preserving the penetration
Follow the mortar system for substrate, trowel, coverage, working time, and cure.
out of the pipe/drain;
off flange service surfaces;
clear of fastener/bolt paths;
out of movement/sealant gaps;
continuous beneath fragile tile edges where specified.
Place without striking the plumbing. Seat the tile body evenly; do not press on the narrow bridge around a hole.
Maintain joint centerlines and plane with the surrounding field.
Complete the waterproofing, sealant, and plumbing handoff
Tile and grout are not the waterproofing layer. Complete penetration collars, drain connections, sealant joints, cure, and tests through the assembly.
Do not reinstall a toilet, valve trim, escutcheon, or drain grate until setting materials and the plumbing/waterproofing plan permit it.
When the cover is installed, inspect:
no rocking on a tile edge;
no loaded pipe;
preserved flexible joint;
correct fixture support.
Do not use cover fasteners to pull a crooked fitting against tile.
Record what remains concealed
Photograph the opening, waterproofing condition, flange/drain relationship, fastener zones, and set field before cover-up.
Do not convert local hole size, bite geometry, frame fit, or cover overlap into product facts.
Leave the next trade a clean handoff note: which component remains removable, which joint must stay flexible, when the setting/sealant systems permit service, and where the concealed opening or anchorage was photographed. A covered cut should become easier to maintain, not impossible to reconstruct without breaking tile.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
The toilet base reveals the cut. Recut the visible piece or change the approved finish; do not patch the escape with grout.
The tile ring blocks flange bolts or anchors. Stop and correct before setting/fixture installation.
A pipe touches a sharp tile edge. Enlarge/finish through the approved clearance and sealant detail.
The nipped half-moon fractures into the field. Reduce bites, improve support, or move to abrasion/machine cutting.
The interior circle is correct but will not pass over the valve. Redesign the tile split or coordinate component sequence.
A starter hole develops a radial crack. Reject the tile and correct drilling/support.
Mortar falls into the drain. Stop, protect/clean through the plumbing method, and restore containment.
The flange condition is wrong but the tile is ready. Delay tile; plumbing correction is cheaper before cover-up.
Porcelain keeps chipping under hand tools. Rent/source the specified wet/diamond route.
An escutcheon rocks on the cut edge. Rework the edge within cover or recut; do not tighten it flat against the pipe.
