How to Fill Nail and Screw Holes in Drywall
Job: take a drywall wall from peppered with nail holes, screw holes, and anchor pulls to filled, flush, and invisible after touch-up or repaint.

These were never three jobs. A wall collects holes; you fill them so the paint can forget them.
Time: under a minute of tool time per hole; a room's whole constellation is an hour of labor. The calendar belongs to the filler's dry time — and to the second visit every deep hole demands.
Difficulty: the entry job of wall repair. The craft is restraint — fill barely proud, let it dry completely, prime the spots. Anyone's first fill works; the skill is making the two-hundredth one disappear.
Before you start: triage — the slow lap that decides everything
Sort holes from pops, first and always. Rake the work light across the wall. An empty hole — dark center, something was removed — is this guide. A raised dot, crescent crack, or dimple with a fastener still under it is a nail pop: the screw or nail is backing out of the framing, and filler smeared over it comes back by spring. Ten seconds of sorting saves refilling the same dimple twice a year.
Sort by depth, because depth decides the pass count. Pin holes, brad holes, and finish-nail holes are one-pass wounds. Screw holes and anchor extractions hold real volume — plan two thin passes from the start and neither will disappoint you. Anchors also carry the job's graduation clause: back a plastic anchor out with pliers (or thread a screw two turns in and pull it as a handle); if what's left is a clean hole, stay here — but if the face paper tore and there is a void with nothing behind it, no filler will bridge air. That is the wall-repair line's Class 2 boundary, that hole belongs to the patch guide (patch-a-doorknob-size-hole), and going there now beats discovering it after three shrunken fills.
Flatten every crater rim. A pulled nail leaves a tiny volcano — crushed face paper and lifted paint standing proud around the hole. Fill over a proud rim and the repair dries as a bump with a dimple in it. Knock each rim flush first: one flat pass with a stiff blade (the 02150/02300-class one peg over — the stiff/flex pair working as the system it is), the 09914's own rigid cap spreader pressed flat over the hole, the butt of a screwdriver, or three strokes of fine paper. The sprung steel flexes and the polypropylene spreaders are the wrong half of the toolset for this — a soft or springing edge rides over what a hard edge shears off.
Lightweight spackle — the fast one: minimal shrink, quick dry, sands like chalk. The pinhole-and-nail-hole champion, often genuinely one-pass. The trade-off: a soft film that dents under a fingernail and drinks paint dull wherever primer gets skipped.
Vinyl (standard) spackle — denser, dries harder, shrinks some. The all-rounder from nail-hole up through screw-hole scale.
Joint compound — the wall's own finishing material: it shrinks the most (it carries the most water), feathers the widest, and matches the wall's surface best under paint. That match is the logic Hyde packages as the 09914 — by its own claims, the same joint compound used for taping and finishing walls, in a 3 oz tube with a built-in applicator/spreader, a resealable design Hyde rates at a 3-year shelf life even after opening, and a stated coverage of over 300 nail holes per tube.
What this job never uses: caulk (it flexes, domes, and refuses sandpaper — walls are rigid, caulk is for joints that move) · wood filler (trim is a different substrate; the trim version is its own guide, fill-nail-holes-in-painted-trim) · and the renter's folklore of toothpaste and bar soap, which dries to powder and has never once fooled a landlord with a flashlight.
Pick the blade by width, then by how often you'll do this again. The width rule first: 1-1/2" is *the* fill width — the hole sits mid-edge and the blade corners ride just clear of the flaw, which is why every tier of this catalog builds one. Go 2" only where the damage has footprint: anchor blowouts, the four-screw constellation a TV bracket leaves, a doorstop crater. (Past that, damage with *area* — dents, dings, gouges — is its own guide, patch-small-drywall-dents-and-gouges.) Then the tier rule, which is one question — how often? A blade that will fill holes for years: the steel flexes — 02100/01040, full-tang on solvent-proof nylon, for the knife that lives in a work bucket; 06101/06108 with the cushioned overmold for the house drawer that sees monthly duty; 04101 for the yearly hole-filler, built and priced for exactly that (Hyde's own light-duty scope, worn honestly). The no-kit-at-all case: the 09914 tube *is* its own spreader — filler and blade in a coat pocket. One material boundary, stated once: nothing polypropylene preps, scrapes, or flattens rims. Soft edges apply; hard edges remove.
One boundary sentence for old walls. Filling holes disturbs almost none of the existing surface, which is why this is the rare wall job with no real dust story. But if the work starts growing — scraping failed paint back, sanding old painted surfaces flat — in a building that predates 1978, you have crossed into the lead rules' territory: the interior scraping guide carries the full statement and the federal thresholds (EPA — Lead RRP Program). At nail-hole scale: fill and move on.
The fill
Load less than feels right. A dab the size of the hole, riding on the front face of the blade's tip — the working inch of a 1-1/2" knife, not a buttered stripe across it. From the 09914, a squeeze that just crowns the hole. Overloading is the beginner's tell: everything the hole doesn't take has to come back off the wall later, one sanding pass at a time.
Press in from two directions. Cross the hole once, firmly, blade fairly steep — then cross it again at roughly a right angle. The second pass packs what the first pass bridged; a hole filled from one direction is a skin over a pocket of air, and it dries into a pit. On screw holes, press until the blade stops giving — the cavity is full when the wall pushes back.
Wipe flush in one confident stroke. Drop the blade low, spring it against the wall, and shear across the fill — one pass, maybe a second crossing it. This is where the flexible blade earns its existence: sprung low, the edge conforms and leaves the fill flush-to-a-hair-proud while the corners float just off the surface instead of digging in. Then stop. Fussing pulls material back out of small holes — the third wipe is always the one that undoes the first two. And leave that hair of proud on purpose: drying compounds shrink as their water leaves — every brand, every scale, a trade fact rather than a defect — and the hair is your shrink allowance.
Run the room as a circuit, not as events. The professional form of this job is the walkthrough: pencil-tick every wound on one slow lap (raking light finds the ones eye-level misses), then fill the room in a single pass, hole to hole, no re-decisions. The pocket version is what the 09914 was built for — squeeze, wipe with the cap's spreader, reseal, next room, no bucket on site; Hyde's over-300-holes coverage claim makes one tube a multi-unit tool. At property scale — every room, every turnover — this circuit is one station of a bigger trade (make-ready-a-rental-unit runs the whole cart), and the one-lap version before painting is spot-spackle-before-repaint. Housekeeping as you go: wipe wall smears while they're wet, and rinse a compound-loaded steel blade before the material skins — the carbon knives (02100, 02250, 06101, 06222) also want a towel-dry before the truck, which is why wet-compound crews drift stainless (01040, 01150, 06108, 06228).
Second-coat truth: the dimple is not a defect. Come back after full dry — dry means uniformly pale and hard, not just cool to the touch — and rake the light across your work. The deep fills will have dished into shallow dimples. That is shrink doing what water loss does, and the fix costs thirty seconds: a second thin pass, pressed and wiped exactly like the first, lands flush and stays. Two thin passes beat one proud glob every time — the glob hardens slowly, sands like a hill, and still finds a way to sink. If a hole is *still* sinking after the second honest pass, stop filling and re-run triage: either something is moving underneath (a pop — reset-popped-drywall-nails) or something is hollow behind (a void — patch-a-doorknob-size-hole). Filler is not a structural opinion.
Sand almost nothing. A properly wiped fill needs one light pass of a fine-grit sponge — or no abrasive at all: a barely damp sponge, two soft circles over the dry fill, melts a hair-proud edge flush and raises zero dust. If you find yourself sanding hard, the wipe was proud; fix the technique, not the wall. Grits, blocks, and the dust story live in their own guide (sand-a-patch-flush); at nail-hole scale you should barely need it.
Prime the spots, or watch them come back. Every fill that skips primer returns as a flash — a dull or shiny ghost exactly the shape of the repair, printed at raking angles under evening light, because filler and painted wall drink paint differently. Matching the wall's own material class (the 09914's joint-compound argument) is a head start; a dab of primer on each dry fill is the finish — thirty seconds a room with a cheap brush. Then touch up with the original paint if any survives, knowing touch-up's honest limit: aged paint has shifted in color and sheen, and a wall of fresh dabs in old paint can read worse than the holes did. Past a handful of repairs, the real answer is a full coat (paint-a-wall-with-a-roller), which erases every fill at once.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
"There's a little bump where every hole was." Proud fills — overloaded, or wiped steep instead of low and sprung. Sand or damp-sponge them flush now; next room, smaller loads and a lower wipe.
"Every hole turned back into a little crater." Shrink dish — one heavy pass on deep holes, or paint applied before full dry. Refill thin, wait it out, then paint. Deep holes are two-pass holes; that's material physics, not product failure.
"I've filled this same hole three times." Something is moving or something is hollow. Fastener under it = pop → reset-popped-drywall-nails. Torn paper over a void = Class 2 → patch-a-doorknob-size-hole. Steps 1–2 exist because filler can't win either argument.
"The knife leaves ridges each side of the wipe." Tram-lines — the fill/scrape split from the 02300 exemplar showing up in your hand. A stiff blade cannot conform to the wall: its corners plough parallel ridges and its edge pulls compound back out of the depression instead of feathering over it. Filling belongs to the flexible half of the family — swap to the flex. (If the flex is doing it, check its edge: one nicked corner prints its signature into every wipe.)
"The wall is smooth but every repair shows in the evening." Flashing (step 13) — porosity ghosts, not geometry. Spot-prime and touch up; if the dabs still read, the wall has earned its repaint coat.
"The filler crumbled out of the hole." A dusty, never-cleared crater gave it nothing to grip (step 3), a void behind it ate the anchor-age (step 2), or a folklore material did what folklore materials do (step 4). Clear it, re-triage it, fill it with a wall material.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
The nail hole is the signature wound of the drywall age. Through the plaster centuries before it, driving a nail into a wall was minor vandalism — lime plaster cracks and sheds around a nail — which is why older rooms ran picture rails near the ceiling and hung their art on hooks and wire: the wall itself was not to be pierced. Gypsum board — patented by Augustine Sackett in 1894 (Invent.org — Augustine Sackett) and made the American wall surface by the postwar boom — rewrote the contract: suddenly any wall took a nail anywhere, and a nation that hangs its pictures by hammer acquired the most numerous repair in the building trades.
