Fettle Mold Seams on Slip-Cast Ware

Distinguish removable witness from defect
Ordinary removable witness may include:
thin raised parting seam;
controlled pour-hole/sprue excess;
small authorized casting burr;
local flashing at a mold join.
Hold for process/quality review when there is:
stepped mold mismatch;
open seam/crack;
doubled/offset profile;
large fin indicating mold gap;
void/pinhole cluster;
drag/tear from demolding;
repeated excess increasing across pieces.
Fettling should remove making evidence, not conceal a bad mold or casting process.
Define the finished surface
Use the drawing, mold/approved sample, gauge/profile, or quality instruction to establish:
acceptable seam witness;
edge/rim profile;
dimensional/functional surfaces;
decorated/visible side;
Do not use “smooth to touch” as the only criterion.
A hollow curve can feel smooth after the knife has planed a flat into it.

The trade calls this a fettling knife, but Hyde’s exact facts do not specify flex. Inspect the physical knife and qualify its use on the actual contour.
Identify the casting system
body/slip and batch;
mold ID and number of parts;
pour/gate location;
intended firing/glaze/function;
Multipart molds create different seam directions and accessibility.
Do not assume every raised line is excess; modeled detail, registration feature, or intentional edge may coincide with a mold boundary.
Choose the fettling window
fingerprints/fixture marks appear;
knife drags/stretches.
Use the body/process method to reach an even leather-hard state.
Test an approved witness/low-risk excess:
seam should shave in controlled crumbs/curl;
surface should support the tool;
no powder cloud;
no wall flex;
no chunk breakout.
If different areas vary, cover/rest/equalize rather than forcing one technique around the piece.
Control silica-bearing dust
Clay bodies commonly contain crystalline silica.
Fettling at leather-hard is selected partly to avoid dry abrasion and powder generation.

Use wet or HEPA cleanup specified by the studio.
Do not dry sweep, sand, rasp, grind, or compressed-air clean under this knife workflow.
If the seam powders, stop and route the piece to the controlled dry-work process.
Inspect the ware under raking light
Before removing anything, rotate the supported piece and map:
seam height/width;
cracks from seam;
thin/translucent zones;
Mark defects separately from removable seam.
Photograph/retain first-piece evidence where production traceability matters.
Do not let initial fettling erase the evidence needed to diagnose a mold clamp/alignment issue.
Inspect and prepare the 40310
Clean and inspect:
edge and point;
straightness/physical flex;
hardwood cracks/swelling;
dried body/slip;
prior sharpening/damage.
No exact sharpening geometry is accepted. Use only a qualified physical-edge route.
High-carbon steel and wet clay require prompt compatible cleaning/drying.
Quarantine a loose, bent, chipped, heavily corroded, or uncertain knife.
Support the hollow form
Use a clean cradle, foam, sandbag, shaped support, ware board, or approved internal support that distributes load without embossing.

form cannot roll;
support hand away from edge path;
no hidden palm behind thin wall;
knife release into open space;
piece can rotate after guarding tool.
Never squeeze a delicate casting to oppose knife pressure.
If the surface flexes, improve support or postpone/change method.
Qualify the first piece
On an approved first piece/witness:
map seam segments;
choose cut direction per local contour;
make a short light tangent pass;
inspect surface/edge response;
adjust support/presentation;
finish one segment;
obtain required approval before batch work.
Record segment directions and stops.
Do not turn one body/mold/moisture result into a universal 40310 capacity.
Start at the easiest accessible segment
Choose a broad supported area away from delicate features.
Present a usable section of edge nearly tangent to the intended surface and take a shallow pass along the seam.
The goal is to shave proud clay, not dig beneath it.
Stop at the first sign of gouging, lifting, or brittle breakout.
Follow convex surfaces in segments
On a convex form, rotate the ware/support so each pass stays locally tangent.
Do not roll the wrist through a long curve while holding the piece fixed; that changes blade presentation and can plane a flat.
Use overlapping short segments with clear landmarks.
Guard/park before every rotation.
Compare reflected/raking light to the approved profile.
No radius or flex-following claim is accepted for the 40310.
Handle concave and tight transitions
The blade may bridge a concavity or the handle/tip may contact before the intended edge.
a physically proven blade section;
stronger local support;
approach from both ends;
another ceramics tool when geometry demands.
Do not bend the 40310 to match the curve or pry seam from a recess.
If no section can reach without touching parent surface, stop; the store’s single pottery knife is not the whole fettling-tool system.
Treat seam intersections carefully
Where several mold parts meet, the witness may form a node, step, or thick fin.
Approach from each established seam toward the intersection with smaller cuts.
Do not drive across the node in one pass.
After reducing the raised material, inspect whether the remaining step is mold mismatch rather than excess.
Hold repeated intersection defects for mold/process correction.
Confirm which protrusion is waste and the final contour/thickness.
Support around it.
Reduce in stages:
gross excess by the specified studio tool/method;
controlled knife-scale shaving with 40310 if proven;
minimal approved finishing.
Do not lever a thick sprue sideways; it can tear a crater from the wall.
No sprue-size capacity is a Hyde fact.
Keep the waste visible
Place removed curls/crumbs where they cannot contaminate the piece but remain briefly available for diagnosis.
Waste that includes broad parent-surface material indicates overcut.
Powder suggests clay too dry or a dull/abrading edge.
Large chips can signal brittle state, defect, or excessive bite.
Use waste as process evidence, then collect through wet/HEPA housekeeping.
Sponge after knife, not instead of it
Once the seam is at the authorized surface, a barely damp sponge/rib may blend the final witness through the body/process method.
Too much water can:
swell/soften the line;
close pinholes superficially;
create uneven drying;
round a crisp profile.
Do not sponge an uncut seam into a smooth hump.
Inspect after moisture sheen subsides.
Protect detail, joins, and functional faces
Near embossed detail, rims, foot rings, spouts, handles, galleries, sealing/mating faces, or attachment joins:
mark no-cut boundaries;
approach from waste;
use the specified alternate tool;
Do not redefine a profile just to make the seam disappear completely.
Detect process drift
In repeated ware, track:
seam height/location;
knife force/condition;
recurring intersection defect.
An increasing seam can indicate mold wear, debris, closure/clamping, slip/casting, demolding, or timing problems.
Stop and route the process signal upstream. Do not train operators to shave deeper.
Inspect and release
wall flex/thinning;
sponge/water effects.
Mark/hold failures before repair.
Do not use future glaze/firing as an assumed cover for an overcut or crack.
Clean tool and station
Clean 40310 before clay dries, keeping hands out of edge path.
Dry high-carbon steel and hardwood promptly; apply only verified treatment; guard/store dry.
Wet/HEPA-clean station/support through the studio plan.
Record body/batch, mold ID, piece, state, seam map, tool condition, support, first-piece approval, defects/rework, operator/date.
Requalify after body, mold, tool/edge, support, moisture, or acceptance change.
Establish a production station around first-piece evidence
For repeated cast ware, keep at the station:
approved seam map;
first-piece/profile witness;
mold/body/lot identity;
segment order/direction;
tool asset/condition;
defect hold examples;
wet/HEPA cleanup tools;
inspection/record route.
Do not use yesterday’s first piece after mold, body, timing, support, or tool change without reapproval.
At defined intervals, compare a piece under the same raking light and orientation. A seam can gradually require more removal while still looking normal to an operator who sees every piece.
Protect cast surface decoration and relief
Some molds carry texture, lettering, relief, registration marks, or functional detail directly across a parting line.
identify which ridge belongs to the design;
mark seam entry/exit;
support fine projections;
use the smallest proven pass;
change tool/method where the 40310 bridges;
inspect the opposite/inside wall.
Do not create symmetry by trimming intentional relief on one half to match accidental loss on the other.
Keep repair separate from seam removal
Adding slip, patching a void, compressing a crack, rebuilding a corner, or replacing lost detail is repair—not fettling.
When a defect appears:
mark/hold piece;
identify mold/process cause where possible;
use only the body/production-authorized repair;
re-inspect after equalization/drying as required.
Do not smear knife waste and water into a void as an improvised patch.
The 40310 record supplies no ceramic repair method or fired-strength claim.
Audit tool wear against surface change
A gradually dulling/damaged edge may leave:
compressed/glossy streak;
increased hand force;
Record edge-service/asset state beside finish defects.
Do not keep pressing until the shift ends.
Because 40310 temper and sharpening geometry remain open, local service must not redesign the blade or claim manufacturer values.
Hand off between operators without losing the surface standard
When a shift, learner, or second operator takes over:
park/guard the knife;
identify body/mold/lot;
show the accepted first piece under the same light;
review segment map/directions;
point out known mold defects and holds;
verify support and moisture state;
inspect the tool jointly;
approve a fresh first piece.
Do not communicate the standard only as “take the line off.”
The incoming operator needs to know the true surface, allowable witness, forbidden functional features, and stop criteria.
Make lighting repeatable
Raking light reveals a ridge, flat, hollow, smear, or knife mark that diffuse overhead light can hide.
Set and record the lamp direction/distance through the quality method. Rotate each piece consistently.
Do not inspect glossy wet sponge sheen as if it were the dry/equalized surface.
Where color/texture obscures contour, use a compatible profile/gauge or approved tactile method that does not abrade/damage the piece.
Lighting does not replace dimensional/function criteria; it makes surface evidence observable.
If daylight or lamp position changes materially during a run, pause and re-establish the approved view before accepting more pieces. Label holds by the last verified inspection point.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
A mold mismatch is shaved into symmetry. Hold and correct the process.
Wet ware smears. Equalize/firm before continuing.
Dry ware powders. Enter silica-controlled dry-work route.
40310 flex is assumed. Physically trial; Hyde states no temper.
A convex curve is handled with a rolling wrist. Reindex into tangent segments.
A concavity is bridged. Use another proven tool/method.
A thick sprue is levered off. Stage removal with authorized equipment.
Sponge replaces cutting. Knife excess first, minimal finish second.
Repeated seams grow but operators press harder. Stop for mold/process drift.
Clay stays on high-carbon steel. Clean/dry promptly.
